About us

Boak & Sons was established in 1974 as a small insulation company by Sam Boak while he was only a senior in high school. Now, we serve both residential and commercial customers to provide quality customer service from Cleveland, Ohio to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and everywhere in between. Our services have also expanded to include sheet metal, siding and gutters along with roofing and insulation. Our company lives by two simple rules: 1. Safety is always first and 2. They were a little high on the price. I don't think they were professional, I just didn't care for the attitude of the person that came out and gave me the estimate. They've also mailed me the estimate and it took maybe 4 or 5 days to get the estimate.

They showed up, they did their estimates, they checked out everything. They were a couple of thousand higher. They basically said the same thing as the other company, with the exception that they were using a different under laying, a titanium type of under laying. So to me it was a better product. The staff were fine, he wasn't there main sales person that came out, I think he was sick or something but he was one of the crew manager, he was very knowledgeable.

Ronnie was very courteous, likeable, and professional. Seemed to be very familiar with product and procedures. Their prices weren't the most expensive, or the cheapest. We went with a different vendor, but I would have been very comfortable with using Boak Construction.

Jason was very friendly and professional. He looked at the gutter and told me there was nothing wrong with it except for a small hole that he sealed for me. I appreciated his honesty and his willingness to help. I would definitely use them if I ever need a gutter repair, a roofer or a siding contractor.

First time I called, the person answering the phone was a bit rude, not very professional. She took down my information & said would have someone call me concerning the estimate. Finally a couple days later I received a call. We could not make arrangements for me to be home when he came to do the estimate, so he was able to do it without me here and left it at my front door -which I really appreciated since it's hard for me to be home when they are available. I actually didn't know the estimate was there until couple days later since we don't use the front door all that much, but called the next day to ask a couple questions about it. I had to leave him a message which was over a week ago & still have not heard back. I will not hire someone that does not return my phone calls. I do appreciate that I at least got the estimate (still had some questions about it though), so I had it to compare with for the guy that is going to do the insulating. This was pretty disappointing. I would have liked to hire with a company & their employees that deals a lot with where I am employed, but I am not going to deal with as mentioned above, rudeness and unreliability. I rated the "professionalism" as fair only because of the guy getting me the estimates. He was very nice & professional on the phone. One of the women answering the phones was a bit attitudinal on two on my phone calls in trying to get a hold of him. Based on her, it would be "lousy". But then not returning people's phone calls is not very professional either. There are siding & roofing estimates I need also, but will call elsewhere.

The estimator came out and gave us a range of options to choose from. He was very knowledgeable about the advantages and drawbacks of the materials they dealt with and he was able to clearly explain the techniques used with each. We were able to easily reach a decision on what was right for our situation without feeling pressured in any respect. In regard to installation, the workers were polite and displayed a high level of competence. The crew was a bit short-handed so the work took a day longer than originally specified, but this did not affect our costs and were were notified ahead of time that it was a possibility. The work was completed with a high level of craftsmanship and the workers did a very thorough job of cleaning up. They used tarps to throw the old material in and hauled it away and they also did a sweep with a magnet to ensure that any errant nails or screws were removed before they left. The team went above and beyond when, after noticing that our chimney had some issues, did some minor temporary repairs to prevent further damage at no additional charge despite the fact that they do not officially do masonry work. The only complaint that I have is that it took a while after accepting the quote for the work before we were actually able to get the work done. This, however, is understandable given the nature of the work and the weather conditions that fall presents in Ohio. I couldn't be happier with the way the project turned out and we've already had them come back to give us a quote on some badly-needed gutter repair.
Description of Work: We have a 100 year old house that had a slate roof. After owning the house for several years and having to repair leaks cause by cracked slates on multiple occasions we decided that it was time to have the roof re-built with modern materials.

Estimator came out on time, wrote up an estimate. Estimate included: 1. adding (approximately 3 inches) insulation to roof 2. venting two bathroom vents to the roof 3. adding insulation to joists in basement 4. adding 3 inches or so of insulation to attic 5. spreading insulation evenly to the edges of roof line to create proper insulating and prevent heat loss Workers were on time. Lead was personable and professional. All issues of concern were addressed and Boak came back out to finish the job and they did it right.
Description of Work: Hired to 1. insulate walls 2. add insulation to attic 3. spread existing and new insulation evenly to edges of attic to prevent heat loss 4. Vent out 2 bathroom vents to the roof. 5. add insulation to joist ends in basement

After delaying the closing on the house we were purchasing by more than three weeks (they installed the roof nearly a month later than had been promised), this resulted in us paying for two places concurrently and living out of boxes while we were waiting to be able to move. Also as a result of this delay, were unable to do some significant home improvements that we had intended to perform prior to our move in (and would have been far easier to complete prior to our move in). When the roof was finally replaced, the house was damaged in the process (and the attic filled with debris). About half of the attic debris was remove by the company, and about half left behind. After they completed the job, I climbed onto the ladder to find the gutters filled with leaves, nails, and shingle debris (how hard would it have been to just scoop out the stuff and add it to the pile of shingles in the yard?) Regarding the damage to the house during the roofing job -- accidents happen, and to their benefit, the company repaired the damage with minimal fuss. My takeaway experience is that the bulk of the people working there are great, but the scheduling process and attention to detail could use a bit of work. Admittedly, one data point does not make an objective evaluation -- perhaps we just hit them at the end of summer /early fall when their company was too swamped with work. Despite the bumps, we would use the vendor again -- as they seemed to sincerely try to make things right in the end.

Response from Boak & Sons Inc
First of all, we apologize your experience wasn’t quite what you were expecting; however, we are glad to hear you would use us again. Unfortunately in our business we are subject to weather conditions and uncontrollable factors once a roof is torn off. It is our policy not to cut corners on any roof, even if it requires more time and labor from our guys. It should be noted that these uncontrollable factors can affect everyone’s schedule as we make the best effort to finish every job we have started before beginning others. As such, we try to be as upfront as possible with our timing. We hope our customers understand and appreciate this aspect about our business. The existing roof had some unique dynamics that created challenges during our tear off phase as it was impossible to keep debris from falling into the attic. Attic debris is not totally uncommon, so we address it on the front of our proposal as such: “Boak & Sons is not liable for dust and debris that may fall into house area during roofing process”. However, we try to treat every house like it was our own, so we took the time to clean the bulk of it out. Additionally, as you stated, additional minimal damage was repaired immediately. We sincerely apologize for the time delay and debris. Thank you for the feedback. We appreciate your business and look forward to working with you again should there be a need. Sincerely, Mara Boak

I was very pleased with the price, we got another quote that was way more expensive for less work. I would have liked them to clean up a bit better. I was upset with our salesman Larry, I had a Angie's list coupon and he told me that there was not such a thing and basically made me a liar, he did some research and found out that I was not lying and awarded me with the coupon, but that is no way to treat a customer.

They came out and we talked about some of the older style vents on the house. Other contractors said they would take them out and add a vented ridge. This estimator said the vents were there for a reason and they would replace those vents. I liked their price and the guarantee on the shingles. When they were working on one section of the roof, they said some wood needed to be replaced. They did not realize we had a vaulted ceiling. There were nails in the ceiling and they cut through part of it. I now have holes in the ceiling with nails hanging down. The day this was done the foreman of the crew said they would come back and tear off that part of the roof to fix the ceiling because there is no attic space. That has not been done. They suggested putting drywall between the beams which will take away from the ceilings. I also found lots nails in the driveway and in the grass. I had to go out in the yard myself to pick up all the nails. There were cigarette butts everywhere as well. I think they did a shoddy job.

Response from Boak & Sons Inc
This issue is currently being disputed with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). In the homeowners original letter to the BBB, he stated the roof was done to his satisfaction. Our estimator provided the homeowner with a quote to replace his roof. At this time he explained to the customer that we would install a ridge vent on every ridge of the roof to vent the attic. This is done per building and manufacturer code. When the foreman got to the addition on the back of the house and tore off existing shingles, he noticed the decking needed replaced. The customer agreed to this that day. Later on, when the crew cut into the roof to install the required ridge vent, the foreman realized the pitch was not normal construction. The roof was completed to ensure the house was water tight and the ridge vents were installed per both building and manufacturer code. However, from the inside of the house there were visible cuts and nails where the ridge vent was installed to this room addition. This room addition has a vaulted ceiling with visible wood beams from the interior. There was no air space or attic above this portion of the ceiling so when the ridge vent was installed we cut directly into the house. This design does not meet standard building code. In the thousands of roofs we have done, we have never seen this. It is undetected from both the outside as well as the inside of the home. This is not how a standard vaulted ceiling is constructed. Our foreman tried to come up with a solution on site but then realized the problem was above his control. We proposed the following resolution to the homeowner as we believe neither the homeowner nor the contractor were at fault. We offered to drywall the whole ceiling, eliminating the beams, and install insulation for no charge. The homeowner said no. We then offered to frame out in between the beams and provide drywall at no charge. The homeowner would just have to find a drywaller to do the work on his own. We did not hear back from this request. We have made several attempts to contact the homeowner and he will not return our calls. In summary: • We were not made aware there was no space between the interior vaulted ceiling and the roof. • It was not something that was visible from the inside or outside of the house. • We installed our roof according to code and our contract. • We offered the homeowner two reasonable solutions. Respectfully, Sam Boak

Honest, inexpensive, timely, professional. 4 star across the board. My husband had just been released from the hospital after having his hip replaced. So, since he was going to be home I didn't feel it necessary to take the day off of work and left him home to handle the insulation job. The two young men that did the job were most helpful in moving furniture, and numerous other large, heavy items that were in the way of the walls that were needing holes drilled in them to insert the insulation. My husband was not able to help them at all as he was on crutches. All living space areas of the house had to have the holes drilled on the inside of the house. They moved all necessary furniture, drilled the holes, replaced the furniture and cleaned up any dust or debris from the drilling and insulation process. What I really liked was that all of the holes drilled they kept low on the wall so you really don't even notice them. Most are behind furniture. We've yet to paint over the patches because it's just not noticeable. We'll get to it the next time we paint. We have an attached garage and they moved everything out of the way, even the garage refrigerator, to drill the holes and insulate where needed. Of course, replacing everything and cleaning up any debris. This job was done over 2 years ago and we did notice a significant reduction on our home heating costs. The job will pay for itself in a few, short years. Very pleased overall and would highly recommend!

Ray from Boak & Sons Inc was eager to provide an estimate of the work I needed. Talking to him on the initial phone call, I told him that I need the work completed the week of April 9, 2012. He said that wouldn't be a problem, and so he came out to give me an estimate. While he was measuring the house, I explained to him that I fired a previous roofer because the guy gave me a bunch of excuses why he wasn't on time; explaining to Ray that I do not do business in that manner. As the week of the 9th approached, Ray called to say that he would probably be out on Wednesday, April 11, due to the weather forecast and the fact that he was completing another job. He said the installers would work on Saturday, too. I spoke with him on Tuesday, April 10, regarding the name of the shingles. Ray asked that I take a sample to Banner Supply Co. for a positive identification. I did, and called him per his request on Wednesday morning. I called him later that afternoon, as he never returned my call. He said it he wouldn't be able to start until Friday, April 13. On Thursday, April 12, I received a call from Ray. He stated that he wouldn't be able to start the job until next week, as his men weren't finished with the current job. At my questioning his promise to have the job done this week, Ray began making excuse after excuse, including saying that on Wednesday, April 11, he was in Cortland, Ohio and there was an inch of snow; this is a blatant lie. After listening to, and being lied to by Ray, I decided that this company was not a reliable company and that folks should know that they are better off using someone else...I know I am!

Response from Boak & Sons Inc
Thank you for your timely feedback regarding our company. We always appreciate hearing from our customers and we’re doing our best to respond their needs. We were happy to hear Ray was able to quickly make arrangements to assess your roofing needs on the short notice you were working with. We were glad you called Boak & Sons as your roof needed structural changes to it. Fortunately we have a certain crew highly skilled with that type of carpentry work for roofs. Unfortunately in our business we are subject to weather conditions and uncontrollable factors once a roof is torn off. According to our company policy, we will not send roofers out onto a roof that has snow or frost as it causes a safety issue. Additionally, it is our policy not to cut corners on any roof, even if it requires more time and labor from our guys. It should be noted that these uncontrollable factors can affect everyone’s schedule as we make the best effort to finish every job we have started before beginning others. We cannot guarantee the weather or what we find when a roof is torn off, but we will always guarantee that each customer will receive professional and quality work. We sincerely apologize for the time delay and will be happy to accommodate your schedule should we be given another opportunity to do so. Thank you again for your feedback. We appreciate it greatly. Sincerely, Mara Boak
