We decided to install bamboo throughout our first floor and floor tile for two bathrooms. Mike was the one who came out to do the estimate. This was our first major project for our new house and it took us about 2 months to decide on exactly what we wanted to do. I did have some trouble reaching someone at the office, but I think they are going through a rough patch. When I called one time the lady who answered the phone said that someone was on vacation, one employee left early for maternity leave and someone had to leave town with a family issue. I was a little frustrated, but realized sometimes things like that happen. (my husband's company went through the same type of thing last year.) They delivered the bamboo to the house and then came back in 2 wks later for the installation. The crew arrived around 10:30am, which I thought seemed late for a construction crew. (I later found out that the guys take their kids to school in the morning and that is why they have a later than normal arrival - I thought that was cute) The installers worked non stop all day. It was a hispanic crew that came out, and there was a bit of a language barrier mentioned in the previous post, BUT they were so polite and professional! They were like a well oiled machine, they knew exactly what they were doing so I decided to stay out of the way. They came in, looked over the area, gave me paperwork and then the demo began. In less than 4 hours my existing floor was gone. When they started the tile in the bathroom I had already left the house for the day. But they texted me a picture of a couple different layouts and I was able to confirm via text. (that was awesome! I didn't have to turn around and go back to the house) The last day of the installation I saw there were a couple areas of base trim that needed touched up, but I pointed this out to them and they were able to correct it. I love my new floors and am so happy I found this company. My husband and I will be starting our bathroom remodel within the next month with them. I got an Angie's list membership to find contractors for our house projects and it looks like 1GRBuilders will be able to handle everything we need down inside the house.

Thank you for the positive review that you gave us for this project. We look forward to remodeling your bathroom in November. It's nice to see clients actually take the time to give a good review instead only commenting when the client has some sort of issue or problem. Hopefully you will be giving us a second awesome review once you bathroom is completed. Thanks again and we appreciate your business. - Mike

We really were not comfortable with this project; it was expensive (for us) and we didn't know what to do. I rated the price as good because I don't flooring project costs but it seemed incredibly reasonable for the quality of work they did. I suspect if I got an excellent price I may not get an excellent product. I think we got an excellent product at a good/great price and that is the best deal possible. From the start, 1GR employees helped with every question and explained our options. Also, we stalled on the project a couple times, due to our schedule. We were able to arrange to get the installation dates we wanted without issue; we did request the dates 3 weeks in advance. The crew was great; polite and respectful to us (and our dog) and respectful of our home (no smoking, eating, no foul language at all, no conversations about their life or after work gatherings, trash left behind, etc.). I haven't seen anyone work that hard for that long in ages! The crew was intent on every detail. They cleaned as they went and at the end of each day, I didn't have any additional clean up. It's been a month since install and I can't find any problems at all. The hardwood floor is gorgeous! In the upstairs hallway we had a laundry shoot that was vertical and took up space in our hallway. During this project I wanted to remove it and have a door on the floor for the laundry shoot. Sounds simple, right? Well, finding the right door was challenging; I thought a hinged door would work but the more the crew worked on it the worst the solution looked...there were gaps. You have have to see the set-up to know it was not a place that a hinge would work well. The crew never got frustrated, just kept coming up with solutions. In the end, they made an extra trip back our home and came up with a solution that I really like; the door is hardly noticeable; it blends with the floor and is still functional. The entire process, start to finish was pleasant and we love the end result! I would not hesitate to have 1GR come back into my home and would highly recommend them to any friend, family or neighbor. They will be the first call we make when replacing the next floor and we'll feel more relaxed about our next flooring project.
Description of Work: 1. Helped us through all the measuring, pricing and installation details. We did not have any experience or confidence in how to do this project. 1GR consultants helped us, patiently, every step of the way. 2. Removed current flooring (entire 1st floor and upstairs hallway) 3. Leveled floors 4. Installed new, stranded bamboo (hardwood) flooring 5. Completed every task requested to the quality we wanted.

1 GR was prompt and timely with their arrivals. We had everything staged and ready for them. They installed plywood underlayment and then started to install the flooring over Lumber Liquidators sound proof underlayment. This is a floating floor. As stated in other posts on this company the communication barrier was a big deal. Only one of the three workers could speak some English. Once they got going with the job they called me into the room to tell me that they subfloor was not level. In hindsight I would have thought that would have been the first thing they should have checked before getting started. The floor was uneven in the middle of the room. The lead installer was trying to make it level by sliding pieces of the cardboard box material that the flooring came in under the floor. This was not working so I called the main office and they sent the supervisor over. He did come up with a suggestion that seemed to work. Cut out a section of the plywood underlayment and fill the low areas with floor leveler. Looked like a decent plan to me so I told them to proceed. Once the floor was finished and they had left we then noticed other areas of the floor that were and quot;bouncingand quot; . For some reason once again I would have assumed that having found one area of the floor not level they would have checked the remaining area. This was apparently not the case. The supervisor came out and agreed to re-lay the floor. The same installers came out without the supervisor and reinstalled floor. This time they used an extensive amount of floor leveler. I will say that the job is better than the first time, but far from perfect. They did do a good job with the installation of the trim boards. After contacting other contractors, whom I should have contacted in the first place, it seems as though the floor leveler as installed may eventually crumble with use. The way the floor was leveled was more of a band aid compared to how the pros told me it should be done. Leveling a floor appears to be more than a spot fix process. If you try to level the floor in one place you'll likely need to go over the entire floor to keep the floor level all the way across. We did call them again and got a return call about a week later. We haven't returned their call at this point as we are exhausted by the process and have other time commitments. We will live with it for now, but in the future we'll go to the professional installers. I'm pretty disappointed by the whole process. One would think Lumber Liquidators would be more choosey with who they have install their products. Even though they are technically not affiliated with 1 GR it still reflects badly on them and doesn't promote referral business for those who see their product installed improperly.
Description of Work: We purchased 400 SF wood engineered flooring from Lumber Liquidators. They recommended 1GRBuilders for the install. For some reason we thought that since Lumber Liquidators has such a presence in the market that they would only use top flight installers.

We knew we wanted hardwood floors in our home. We found the right material at Paneltown in Columbus. While we were there we ran into Kelly from 1GR and she asked if we had an installer yet. We did not so we asked for an estimate. We also got two others from other Angie's List providers. 1GR was not the least expensive but seemed to be the best fit for us. Kelly was able to answer my detailed questions. The installation started on a Monday and went through Wednesday. They arrived on time and got right to work. They installed just over 900 square feet of hickory flooring in our first floor. We had moved out most of the small items and only left couches and a couple of recliners which they worked around. The work they did around the inset floor registers is excellent. They kept a very clean environment. We are very happy with our choice of installers and would recommend them to anyone.

We ordered our flooring from Lumber Liquidators, who uses 1 GR as a contractor to install the flooring. 1 GR was recommended to us by a family member who used them for their wood floor installation. They had a great experience with this company so I was disappointed when my experience was not similar. At the end of the day the floors look great and seem to be put together well. They showed up on time and cleaned up after themselves. But my issues with this company are all about the communication barrier I experienced; the person who seemed to be in charge of this job site did not have English as a primary language and therefore was not able to communicate with me or answer my questions pertaining to the flooring. We tore out the carpet on our own and we have a fireplace that has tile around it on the wall that also extends onto the floor in the living room. When the carpet was gone I was concerned that there would be a transition issue with the tile and the new flooring. When 1 GR got to the house I asked about this, asking if it would be OK or if we needed to 'build up' the laminate flooring. He understood that question and brought a piece of laminate and the premium underlayment (padding) and a T molding to show me how it would look. The T molding was noticeably slanted, making the laminate flooring appear sunken in around the fireplace. I didn't like it, I thought it looked tacky. So I asked if there was a way to fix it, what the options were. He shrugged and just started at the floor. After about 10 minutes he cut an extra piece of the underlayment and stacked it on top. It straightened out the T molding and made the flooring look even. So I asked if we had to put a double layer of padding across the whole room. He shook his head yes. Well, that didn't seem right to me. I have never heard of anyone doing a double layer of padding so I said no, we're not going to do that. What else can we do? He drew a line around the fireplace, indicating to only double layer the padding in that area and single layer it across the rest of the room. My response was and quot;Well then my flooring is going to have a dip in it 6 inches outand quot;. He didn't say anything, just shrugged his shoulders. I asked if there was someone I could talk to, he didn't respond. So I took it upon myself to call their office, hoping to get the person who scheduled the appointment with me (Kelly). I got her on the 2nd call and explained what was going on. I expressed my frustration with the communication barrier. She said she would call him and talk to him.. long story short, Kelly said the only way to fix this issue was to put luan (thin plywood) across the whole room to raise the laminate. That was an unexpected $500 on the spot. Towards the end of the installation the guy asked me how far in I wanted the laminate to go into the open doorway of the kitchen. He had a transition piece (reducer) in his hand, which apparently is used when floors are unequal heights.. I asked if that was something that would have worked around the tile of the fireplace. His response? : a chuckle and and quot;I don't know, maybeand quot;. I was so upset. I said I hope not maybe, I just spent $500 because your company said that was all we could do! Another shrug. Another blank stare. He had no idea how to communicate, I don't even know if he understood what I was saying. I called Kelly again to ask about this. She said the issue was that I wanted the flooring even with the tile. I told her the issue was that the transition piece (T molding) he was showing me was uneven, if the reducer would have worked instead he should have shown that to me as an option. If it was a smooth transition with only a small height difference I would have been totally OK with that. She then said that she had asked him about a reducer, but because of the metal trim piece on the tile it wouldn't have fit and the luan was a last resort. I'm not a contractor, I have no idea if that is true or not but the fact is the guys who were working on the flooring never showed that to me so I feel like maybe they really didn't try every option before telling me about the luan board. Maybe the reducer was an afterthought but it was already too late. I really hope not. They have paperwork that they're supposed to go over with you at 25% completion and 100% completion. They never went over the moisture check with me. I had to ask him and then he just showed me a bunch of numbers, like I was supposed to know what they meant. He couldn't explain what it was, he just kept pointing and repeating the numbers. I asked if I need to get a humidifier/dehumidifier in the house and he said no. I'm going to research the numbers myself just to be sure. There was also a question about a moisture barrier being installed and if it was over a crawlspace. I asked if that was the padding or if something additional needed to be laid over the crawlspace for moisture issues. His response was, again, a shrug and a blank stare. By this point I was done dealing with him and I asked if he could call someone because I wasn't signing something I didn't understand. He called Kelly and couldn't even ask the question to her, he just handed the phone to me. The moisture barrier was the padding, by the way, so it was fine. The man just couldn't comprehend anything I was asking. I know this was a laminate wood flooring project and it's supposed to be a pretty easy thing to install but it's not like it was dirt cheap. We spent a good amount of money on the materials and labor and I expected professionals who cared to do the project. The fact that they sent 3 men out who couldn't communicate with me or comprehend questions I was asking in English tells me that I did not get a good service. It is absolutely ridiculous that I had to keep calling Kelly to answer my questions and explain the issues when I had 3 working men at my house. And for that reason alone I will never use this company again.

Initially communication was great and very punctual. I received my estimate and was prepared to move forward with the installation. Then the replies to emails stopped. The sales person was was working with the installers to answer my questions but I never heard back after calling several times. I just gave up and found someone else to do the install. Their loss.

They arrived around 10 am and worked till 6 PM with no break for lunch. The pattern in flooring is excellent. I was very pleased with finished job. The tile work was a little intricate on fireplace surround but it came out fantastic and I am very picky about that as I am a former interior decorator! After installing sub floor and tile in one of my bathrooms the door did not close properly. This was the last day of work but one of the guys went out to get proper saw to skim door and made a special trip back to do it for me. I was so surprised and needless to say, delighted! I would use them again and recommend them to friends.

We purchased laminate flooring from Lumber Liquidators and they are the installer for them. Initial install handled well - good communication re: scheduling, crew arrived on time. Did the work, cleaned up after themselves. 98% of the work looked great. The problem spots we noticed were in the middle of the floor and asked them to fix it before they left (initial installation). Unfortunately, that required taking out all the boards up to it, and so they used up almost our whole spare box fixing their error. (Board being replaced had a scratch on it - why install it to begin with?) They were very pleasant to work with - seemed much of the crew didn't speak English very well - just kept smiling and nodding, but they were very friendly and did what we asked with no grumbing. Crew leader was very professional. We didn't have enough baseboard so they had to return at a later date, and also we noticed a couple weeks after initial install that boards around the toilet were already bloated and warped. Turned off water to toilet and called them to come back. Didn't return calls at first, but eventually did. Crew that came back out took toilet back out, fixed the problem, replaced all the boards, finished the baseboard - again very friendly and professional. I would recommend the company overall. The quality of the work was great, and that's the main thing to me, along with the professionalism and willingness to fix any concerns, and that is all there.

It was issue after issue all through the process. I had to have them come out multiple times to keep correcting the issues they created. The floor pattern was laid down in a constant layered diagonal pattern for most of the floor and then random for the final 3rd of it. I also noticed that there was underlayment sticking out along one wall a decent way down it and then also in the small restroom. There were many boards that were right up against the wall or items such as the cabinet bases. I'm not talking about the sides but the ends of the boards that need to be a 1/4and quot; off of the wall for expansion. The head installer told me that the people on TV have a TV and that doesn't mean they know what they're talking about. Communication was not timely and the estimate included floor leveling compound. When the installers arrived they said they didn't have any and that it would be a lot to put it down. They used boxes of the extra flooring leftover fix their issues when I told them they need to buy more and use that since it's not my fault. They chipped the leg on my bathroom sink cabinet. There are chipped boards on the sides in the restroom where they hammered in the last boards. I know that they'll be covered by the baseboards but it just shows lacking quality of installation. One of the installers put his coke can on my expensive table that was being stored in the garage and I'm lucky I found it before it left a circle in the wood. There were chips of flooring in the front yard from them cutting the wood that wasn't cleaned up and I found a cigarette butt too. I heard one of the workers say a very inappropriate Spanish word that I know what it means from working the food industry a long time ago. I was told that the staff was going back into training again. After the installation I moved my treadmill to its normal position in the room and saw that under the cardboard that the treadmill was on there were scuffs on the floor. I moved the treadmill more and noticed that my moving it didn't cause the marks. There were marks at the resting place on the floor where the furniture was sitting when I went to move it. 1 GR said that I did it and when the owner came he told me to use a color marker in order to cover the scuffs. I told him that the boards can't be fixed with the Mr. Clean's magic sponge and that they need to be replaced. The owner said I need to work with him since he's at cost on this job. Apparently if it means fixing the job that was a mess means that it only happens until it stops being a profit. The owner did have the boards replaced and they fixed an issue with an ice cube that melted on the floor when I was painting and the fridge was moved. A few months ago the boards that were removed and replaced are now separating. I was being charged $50 for the ice cube issue and they wiped the cost which was nice. I sent a pic of a divit on one of the boards that they replaced and I never heard back from them. They did a few hundred dollars off the price before the fixed the scuff issues and the ice cube issue. I was told to cut the trim for the bottom of the front door to block a breeze instead of them doing it. After complaining about it they did fix it but didn't look happy about doing it. I'm not sure why this all had to happen. I'm not shy about good or bad word of mouth because I feel everyone should be aware of actions. When I work a job I finish it well, especially at work. All I was expecting was the same thing. It feels like good work isn't done anymore and it's a shame. I take my time working so that the job is done right and I told them this so I'm not sure why this all had to happen. Beware that you might have an experience like mine...

We used this company twice. We will not be using them again. This company was recommended to us for installation when we purchased hardwood floors. We used them for installation, and it went fine. We purchased the recommended 10% extra, in order to allow for any damaged pieces, but somehow ended up with barely enough material to complete the job, with not even an extra scrap. The floors looked great though, so we were happy overall. We discussed other potential projects with them, including finishing our large basement. We got a quote on our own design for the basement, and the price was pretty much what we had expected, but the language on the quote was very vague. We ended up writing in some of our own terms on the document before signing it, to try to protect ourselves. The quote indicated that we would pay a percentage of the fee up front, another portion mid-way through, and the balance upon completion. We were fine with that. During the course of the job, however, the owner of the company asked for several pay advances to cover additional expenses. We learned that he needed our money to cover other jobs that he was doing at the same time, including work on his own home. We felt that this was very unprofessional. As far as punctuality, the job was large, and completed in a reasonable amount of time overall. However, on several occasions we were told that someone would be over at 9 a.m., for example, and no one showed up to work until 2 p.m., or not until the following day, which was an inconvenience to us. We were told that the company is working on a restaurant chain at the same time, so it was apparent to us that we took a back seat to those jobs. Again, unprofessional - especially considering the amount of money that we were investing in this company for their work. We also experienced delays several times due to the fact that our original carpet and counter top choices were not in stock. We were not informed immediately, but we learned of the delay when it was almost time to install and then we were told that our choice would take an additional two weeks. We ended up choosing a different carpet, so it's not what we originally wanted, but we held out and waited for the quartz counter top. As I stated earlier, the job overall was done in a reasonable amount of time...but then again, we had to choose a different carpet to accommodate our timeline. In case you wonder why I waited two years to complete this review, we didn't learn about the final straw until just a few weeks ago. All in all, the basement was finished beautifully, so we were able to overlook the inconveniences that we encountered along the way. Then, we decided to sell the house. We went into contract, and learned that a lien was filed against our house because 1 G.R. Builders never paid for the fireplace that they installed in our house. Of course, we had paid our bill to 1 G.R. Builders, but apparently they had neglected to pay their vendor. Now their lack of professionalism was about to jeopardize the sale of our home! It seems to me that this company is lacking in the area of financial management, and I would advise you to be cautious about giving them your money. If you decide to use them, get EVERYTHING in writing!

1 GR knew what they were doing and made quick work of figuring out the square footage of everything. We chose not to do it because we couldn't afford it, it was not that the price was unfair.
Description of Work: 1 GR gave me a quote to put in bamboo flooring and base boards.

Purchased laminate flooring from local store, and they provide company (or companies) to install product if you choose. We had them come out for an estimate - to make sure we purchased enough. Also, since toilet in powder room had issues, we decided to replace, and they offer that in their estimates b/c they must remove it to install flooring. We purchased flooring and set up installation. The crew had it all installed in one day - albeit a long day. A few months later, I noticed a and quot;bubbleand quot; in flooring - and called them back. Someone came out and diagnosed problem, and b/c of extent of what needed to be done, I schedule the and quot;fixand quot; date a few weeks out. They came out, pulled up necessary flooring, fixed issues w/ underlayment and subflooring, and re-installed flooring. And, it didn't take more than a couple hours time, which was great!
Description of Work: Installation of laminate floors-entire lower level of house. Also installed new toilet in powder room off kitchen.

He was 45 minutes late to the appointment, no call, no explanation why. He was only twenty something so we weren't sure how long he had been doing it. He said we are the only certified installers for floor and decour which I knew was a lie. He did not instill much confidence in me when he said hm, I wonder why it is leaking. I had 2 guys come in before that and tell me what was wrong. He wanted to make it into a whole spa experience which I wasn't so sure I wanted. What really set me off was arriving 45 minutes late with no explanation or apology. It took forever to get the quote, I thought I was never going to get one, it was weeks later.
Description of Work: We needed to remodel the master bath because it was leaking.

Response from 1 GR Builders
This is the first time I have ever felt the need to respond to someones comments on Angie's List about our company. The reason I am doing so is because almost everything that this potential client stated in his review of our company is completely false. 1) The appointment time for the estimate was between 6-7pm. We always schedule the estimate time within a 1 hr. time frame to allow for things like traffic or a previous estimate that may of taken longer than expected. I arrived at 6:45 so I was on time. 2) I am sure if I were asked how old I was I would of gladly explained that I am NOT 20 years old and that I am in fact 33 years old. I would of also explained that I have been "doing this" for over 13 years. The fact is if Member asked me how old I was or how long I have been "doing this" I really do not think that I would forget those answers so I am going to assume that I was not asked those particular questions. 3) We are the only *Certified installers for Floor & Decor in Hilliard Ohio. In order to be the *Certified installer for Floor & Decor we are required to have background checks, carry 2 million dollars of insurance and warranty our installations for 1 year. If you were to call the Floor & Decor installation department at 877-477-1017 or fill out the form on the website you would be directed to 1 GR Builders. The store does have a wall with random business cards on it however they are NOT *Certified installers and they are NOT required to uphold any of the standards that we at 1 GR Builders must follow to be a *Certified Floor & Decor installer. 4) There was obvious water damage from a leak that had occurred in the master bathroom shower however I was told that they had not turned the water on or used that shower in years. The last time that they did water dripped down to the kitchen ceiling which they had already repaired a while back. There was no access panel and I was not allowed to turn on the water. Without being able to do these thing there is no way I could be 100% sure of the the problem. I did however explain that no matter what the issue may be we are more than capable of repairing the problem. 5) The fact is that I was at this estimate for well over an hour and out of that time period Member was only there for 5 minutes. The rest of the time was spent discussing options with Member. The "Spa Experience" was discussed by myself and Member who did in fact request a lot of different options to be itemized on the estimate which would lead to that "Spa Experience" mentioned. Maybe Members did not discuss it together, there for the confusion? I did in fact provide an extremely detailed, itemized estimate with every option broken down by cost. 6) We normally email the estimate 24 hours from the estimate date however I did take longer to email this quote to Member then normal. This is the only true statement that Member has mentioned when reviewing our company. It is a huge bathroom that is over 250 s.f. and I had to itemize each and every thing from granite countertops to detailed tile work and everything in between such as adding a chandelier above the bath tub and frameless glass for the shower. It does take time to break it all down however I am sure that I could of got it done a little quicker than the week and a half (not 2 weeks) that it took me so I do honestly want to apologize for that. I am sorry and I will make sure to improve my response time for larger jobs in the future.

The team that came was professional, courteous, efficient, and hardworking. They listened to my explanation of the look I wanted, to the concerns I had about the subfloor, and getting the level of the new tile to match the level in the hallway. Their work was excellent, and I was pleased they were able to schedule my job so promptly after I first received and then accepted their quote. The team even did some additional carpentry work at no additional cost to trim some wood off the bottom of six accordion closet doors so they would open and close smoothly over the slightly raised surface of the new floor. My only complaint is that communication between the company and me was a little lacking; I had no idea the team would work two 12 hour days; they were able to get the tile in place on day one, and grouted on day two. I had an evening appointment on the first evening that I had to miss; it was not the end of the world, but I would have scheduled the installation more carefully if I had known how long the team would be working each day! Still, this is a small matter, and overall I am pleased with their work.
Description of Work: The team from 1GR Builders installed 6" ceramic tile in a large bedroom and walk-in closet (total ~ 280 sq ft). I already owned the tile, but none of the other materials, concrete board, grout, etc.

They were affiliated with the people we purchased the product through. The people were friendly and helpful. The crew that did the installation was amazing. They worked really hard and did an excellent job! The job went very well. They did the best they could to keep the mess to a minimum. They installed the washer and dryer correctly. The only thing I think could be improved on was the office response time. I would usually have to contact them a couple of times before I got a response.

They did a beautiful job on installing the tile.
Description of Work: I purchased tile from Tile/Flooring Outlet. They provided me with names of installers. I chose 1GR after I checked them out with BBB and Angie's List. They were great to work with. They are coming out again to provide an estimate for me for my master bath.

The carpet was removed and the flooring placed down, without incident. We did hit a snag, however, when we found that the tile floor, in the entry and kitchen was higher than anticipated. This resulted in taking a step back and finding a different molding to minimize tripping hazzards. The foreman of the crew went to another home supply store, in the area, and found suitable moldings to complete the job in time for holiday guests. When a problem came up, they were more than able to think on their feet to overcome problems.
Description of Work: Purchased flooring from a lumber company. Was referred to 1GR Builders for the installation. Mike came to our home to measure for the necessary material. Initially, we were unable to do the work, but later we did schedule. Carpet was taken up and flooring installed.
