Description of Work: We had some problems with our furnace and they replaced a thermostat but charged what seems like a very high price. ($275) | |In general, the service is good but the price is high and quality of equipment does not match the high cost. In another instance we had a tankless water heater installed and were charged over $2500 and the heater itself cost less than $700.

Description of Work: They come out each summer and winter to service my airconditioner and furnace. I pay a monthly fee o cover the cost, and there is no additional charge at the time of the two services. This time they were out to service the airconditioner.

Our blower moter was replaced, our compressor was replaced twice last year and now we are awaiting a call from the owner on how to handle the leak diagnostic and fix because we really don't want to put more money into a unit that seems to be falling apart after 5 1/2 years. So far, no response.
Description of Work: This is the last money I will spend with Schmid's unless they step up to the plate and admit we have a bad unit and will work with us to get it replaced. Our Amana furnace and heat pump was installed in December 2007, costing nearly $8000; in the last two years we have paid an additional $1300 for repairs. Since then we have had the blower motor on the furnace replaced (warranty) in 2011, 2 compressors on the heat pump replaced - $797 (2012), added the "optional" hard start kit to protect the heat pump from drawing too many amps ($260), and now there is a leak "somewhere" of refrigerant. The diagnostic will cost more money (no quote on that yet) as will the fix and $500 to replace coolant. We have been "gold club members" since 2004 which means our units are serviced twice a year to help avoid these expensive repairs. At this service call last week, the technician, who was very knowledgeable and polite, called the office and stated that I wanted to talk with Lee Painter, the owner, about the on-going problems with our unit. He suggested it might be a lemon. I called Mr. Painter yesterday as I had not heard from him and the receptionist stated he was in a meeting from which she did not know when he would return. She almost forgot to ask for my phone number and never did ask for me to repeat my name. I am giving Mr. Painter until tomorrow to respond, then will be sending certified mail regarding his inaction.

We have had a yearly contract with One Hour for yearly inspections and service calls. After the last inspection, questions arose as to whether the furnace was working properly and whether it would need fixed or replaced. At that time, we called One Hour to arrange a discussion with the owner. There has been no response. A few weeks later, we called again and asked that the service man at least call us if not the owner. There was no response. We will not be dealing with One Hour after this spring.

We looked at 3 companies before chosing one to replace our ancient steam boiler. Not too many companies will even consider working with steam these days, so our choices were fairly limited. In a 100-year-old house, forced air just wasn't an option for our budget, and hot water heat wasn't practical, so we were obligated to replace our ancient steam boiler with a new one. Estimate-wise, Schmid's was the mid-level quote we received from the three companies. We chose Schmid's over the two other companies because of its outstanding guarantees and its assurance that their representatives would continue to come out as often as needed to make sure everything was working properly, even to the extent of bringing out a manufacturer's representative if they were unable to solve all problems themselves. We have had experiences with our old steam boiler where service representatives pretended to know what they were doing and messed things up badly, so we appreciate when someone is willing to say, and quot;hey, I don't have all the answers, but I can get them for youand quot; (at no extra charge). The installation of the boiler itself went smoothly; Schmid's is training a couple of its service reps in steam heat, so they made multiple trips to our house with the and quot;expertand quot;, who normally works in the Akron area, to get the the guys less experienced in steam up to speed on how everything worked and to make sure all parts of the installation were done properly, since there is a fair amount of plumbing with large cast iron return pipes, small water pipes, and gas lines, as well as electrical work. We were charged nothing extra for any of the return trips, including a new auto-fill unit that they hadn't intended to replace initially. They have worked hard to answer all of our questions and to make sure everything is right and have so far lived up to their guarantee to come as much as needed to get it all working properly. When the water overfilled initially and made us shut down the heat, they somehow managed to fit us into their overcrowded day to come out and look at it when they heard we weren't able to run the furnace until someone looked at it for us so we wouldn't have to wait over a weekend without heat. We were a little worried when we heard that their resident expert (who is fantastic--LOVES working on steam and understands it inside out, which is a lost art these days) is retiring in 2 1/2 years, but we are hoping that he will take the time to train some others to love it as much as he does, so that when he's gone, we'll still have people at the company that can help us take care of our new relic. In the meantime, he has given us his cell phone number and encouraged us to call if we have any more questions about taking care of our new boiler. Thank you, Buford!! As a side note, I also appreciated that they didn't talk down to me as a woman; my husband travels a lot for business, leaving me to deal with a lot of maintenance of the house, so over the years of having the old boiler, I learned a lot about caring for it, and how it works, so it was nice to have the guys explain things to me without assuming that I was an idiot just because I'm female. That, too, is a lost art in home and car repair these days. Obviously, we haven't had the system long enough to comment on the quality of workmanship and longevity of the boiler itself with which they provided us, or to comment on the ongoing maintenance we will need, but overall, we are very pleased so far with this company. We expect to receive top-notch service, based on what we have seen so far from the installation, and would easily recommend this company to others.
Description of Work: We had a steam boiler replaced with the appropriate plumbing work done to make the transition from old to new, and we had a new water heater installed.
