We hired USA Insulation to insulate the exterior walls of our home (built in 1925) in May of 2009. We haven't noticed an overall increase in comfort level since the insulation was installed, especially during these last few cold months. with noticeable cold spots in several locations (when placing your hand on the wall). In addition, We recently began renovation of one of the room in our home which happens to have an exterior wall. After removing the interior drywall to expose the wall cavities, it became evident how poor of a job USA Insulation did in blowing foam insulation into the wall cavities as several areas were missing or having no foam at all. Furthermore, we haven't noticed the expected reduction in heating (natural gas) bills. Here is a short breakdown of our relevant utility usage from 2008, 2009, and 2010 for the few months that had similar average monthly temperatures: October Year | Billing Days | Ave. Temp. | CCF | CCF/Day | CCF/Day/Temp. 2008 29 56.3 48 1.66 0.03 2009 29 53.3 66 2.28 0.04 January Year | Billing Days | Ave. Temp. | CCF | CCF/Day | CCF/Day/Temp. 2008 30 30.3 235 7.83 0.26 2010 30 28.1 222 7.40 0.26 It is clearly evident our usage has not changed with the foam insulation installed by USA Insulation. What a waste of money!

Their product is unique which is why we went with them initially. The insulation is not inexpensive, but it is worth it, and they do a great job. We did not even bother to check with other companies the second time because we were so pleased with their quality and their service. Their service is also very good, and we couldn’t be happier with them.

I attempted to resolve these problems with the company but had no resolution. I contacted the BBB but nothing came from that attempt. I contacted the attorney general and even provided pictures. They'd indicated they could help but did not. I wasn't sure what else to do so I've turned to Angie's List.
Description of Work: They did original insulation in 2005. I had to have them back about 6 months later. Again in 2007 I had to have them again. At that time they did plugging insulation from the exterior and plugged with styrophome plugs (which should have been wood plugs). I complained about the styophome plugs and they handed me a bag of wooded ones so I could plug them myself. The insulation was never done properly, my home in the kitchen and bedroom has been very cold from inappropriate insulation. The house is so cold that I tried to add fiberglass rolls (R38) myself this past winter to improve my problem. During that process I removed a kitchen cabinet and found that the insulation was very sparse allowing pipes to freeze and breeze to blow through the walls. It was clear that there were vast areas, one above the window and another measuring 5' x 2' where there was NO insulation at all. There were 2" gaps where there was insulation. The job was very inappropriate.

When reading this review, please take into consideration that this customer’s idea of resolution is demanding 100% of her money back even though we completed the work to the specifications of the contract. In addition, according to the Better Business Bureau’s final account of the case, “company has addressed all issues and made efforts at resolution.” We have gone through the BBB process and have made every attempt at satisfying this customer. We have offered to return to her house, at our expense, to investigate and address any of her concerns. We feel that this rating is unfair and not typical of our business.

I had the work done a couple of years ago. Initially, I was very happy(they were prompt, clean, and courteous). However, I never saw the expected reduction in my gas bills, even after adjusting for unit price increases. Finally, I sought out three separate independent reviews of my energy consumption and the insulation in my house. In all three cases I was told that the work done by USA was poor(they failed to insulate the attic floor and the blew-in insulation in places where it wasn't needed). I've had subsequent insulation work done on my house and part of that work included removing and discarding some of the insulation material installed by USA. Also, with the passing of time, I am seeing large bubbles of insulation on my garage ceiling where the material installed by USA is starting to leak out. I would definitely not do business with them again.

It was ok. The salesperson was a few minutes late, which was alright. He measured the house and did his presentation. I did not feel he really listened to me and was so intent on pushing the foam insulation that he made me feel like I had no other options. He also did not suggest that we get roof vents, which I know we need because we do not have any. This is my test, I know that I need them and I do not mention it to the contractor, I wait for them to say it. I have had other insulators out and they all suggested the vents.

During the work, where things fell is where they stayed. My biggest problem with them is that they left nails and staples in my driveway, dirt was left on the inside back steps going down to the basement from them going up & down them and them not putting things back the way they were before. I called them yesterday to come back out to clean up and also a corner of the siding was coming off. They came back out, swept up and carted away the debris in the immediate area of the driveway but their was still mud left in my driveway. They were here when they said they would be and a even little bit before it but, I would not use them again unless I wrote the contract myself.
Description of Work: They insulated my house. Comments: The $3,197 price includes the $400 Angie's List discount. The salesman who came out was very professional. He even brought a DVD to show me exactly how the work was to be done. The workers appeared to be professional when they came out to do the job but they left a horrible mess. In my workshop they left everything scattered around. They left mud near the door. I asked them to clean up everything before they left and they did not. It was a very unprofessional job.

WE’RE VERY DISCOURAGED BY THIS REVIEW OF OUR COMPANY AND FEEL IT’S QUITE UNFAIR, SO WE’D LIKE TO COMMENT ON SOME POINTS. WE WERE HIRED TO INSULATE A HOME, WHICH WE DID TO OUR BEST ABILITY. THE CUSTOMER CHOSE TO DISREGARD OUR STELLAR SERVICE AND QUALITY INSTALLATION AND TO NIT-PICK OUR WORK. HE CLAIMS WE LEFT A “HORRIBLE MESS”. HE FAILED TO MENTION IT SNOWED THE ENTIRE DAY OF THE JOB, 12/17/07. SNOW ACCUMULATION MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO FIND AND REMOVE ALL DEBRIS LEFT BY THIS PROCESS. WORKING OUTSIDE IN WET WEATHER GUARANTEES MUD WILL BE TRACKED INSIDE. AS MENTIONED, WE RETURNED THE VERY NEXT DAY TO CLEAN UP ONCE THE SNOW ENDED. (NOTE: THE PIECE OF SIDING WE FIXED WASN’T EVEN ONE WE WORKED ON. IT WAS DAMAGED PREVIOUSLY. WE FIXED IT ANYWAY. NOW THAT IS SERVICE!) WE’D ALSO LIKE TO ADDRESS COMMENTS THAT WE “LEFT EVERYTHING SCATTERED AROUND” HIS WORKSHOP. WE PROVIDE CUSTOMERS WITH LITERATURE OUTLINING THE INSTALLATION PROCESS AND WHAT WE ASK OF THEM TO PREPARE. HE SIGNED THIS, ACKNOWLEDGING HE READ AND UNDERSTOOD IT. IT READS: “IF INSTALLATION IS TO BE COMPLETED FROM THE INSIDE…PLEASE MAKE THE WALLS ACCESSIBLE.” THE CUSTOMER DISREGARDED THIS, FORCING US TO MOVE HIS ITEMS TO GAIN WALL ACCESS. FINALLY, WE GAVE A $100 DISCOUNT IN ADDITION TO THE $400 ANGIE’S LIST COUPON. THIS TOTALS NEARLY 15% OFF. WE DID EVERYTHING TO SATISFY HIM AND DON’T FEEL THE F RATING IS REFLECTIVE OF OUR COMPANY OR WORK AND ASK THAT YOU CONSIDER THIS BEFORE INSULATING. – USA INSULATION

We are satisfied with the honesty of this representative.
Description of Work: We wanted to add insulation to our attic. The representative was honest enough to tell us that they do not do blown insulation jobs less than $700. However the actual cost for us would have been only $325. He could have just told us $700 and not told us why. Then he was kind enough to recommend some alternate choices.

USA Insulation came out in October 2007 for an estimate on Insulation on my sidewalls. I sent the request via USA Insulation's website and they were very prompt in calling me for an appointment. The USA Insulation representative was prompt to our appointment, provided the estimate, and was glad to answer any questions that we had regarding their process. The quote was $3,600 for insulating the sidewalls of a ranch that is 1,380 square feet. We are still evaluating if we want to go with the Foam or Cellulose (which is $2,000 less). If we were going to stay in our house for 20 more years, we would definitely go with the Foam, but our time horizon here in more like 5 to 10 more. It looks like Cellulose will win for our time horizon.

I HAD THIS DONE LAST NOVEMBER, AND I NOTICED THAT LAST WINTER IT DID NOT HOLD THE HEAT IN VERY WELL. I AM STILL TRYING TO GET THE FEEL FOR HOW THE INSULATION WORKS, AND THE BENEFIT OF THE FOAM. I WILL SAY THAT THE SOUND PROOFING IS GOOD. I LIVE ACROSS FROM A HIGH SCHOOL AND ON FRIDAY NIGHT I DO NOT HEAR THE NOISE FROM THE FOOT BALL GAMES. MY GAS BILL BEFORE WAS AROUND $300.00 AND NOW IT IS AT LEAST CUT IN HALF IF NOT MORE.

The Salesmen Mike Carey showed up five minutes early for my appointment with a smile on his face. He explained to me what needed to be done and the installation process. My house was built in the early 1950's, and has many unique additions and angles. Mike was able to diagnose exactly what needed to be done and explained all the different types of insulation available. He was honest in telling me what needed to be done and not pushy like many other salesmen. The installation went great, the crew was very neat and clean. I was very impressed with the entire process from the salesmen to the installers, I would recommend this company to anyone.

IT WAS A MESS. THEY HAD TO COME OUT ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS. ONE CREW BLAMED THE OTHER FOR NOT INSTALLING INSULATION CORRECTLY. SAID THAT OUR HOUSE WAS UNUSUAL AND THAT THEY COULDN'T USE FOAM ON THE UPSTAIRS - USED BLOW IN TYPE. HAD TO FIGHT WITH THEM TO GET PRICE REDUCTION WHEN THEY USED DIFFERENT PRODUCT THAN QUOTED. THEY LEFT A MESS OF OUR INTERIOR WALLS. SALESMAN CAME OUT TO "NEGOTIATE" FINAL PRICE AND THREATENED THAT THEY WOULD JUST "HAVE TO LEAVE IT TO THEIR LAWYERS", SO WE TOOK THEIR FINAL OFFER. VERY DISSATISFIED. NOW THAT THE WEATHER IS TURNING COLDER, I SEE VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE IN WHAT WE HAD BEFORE.

Response from USA Insulation of Cleveland
Please understand that we did everything in our power to sufficiently insulate this home and at one point, every member of our company was at this house (4 trips). It was a Dutch Colonial home with a Gambrel Roof and thus, a difficult home to insulate. There were a few hidden cavities that had to be filled with loose blown or batted insulation instead of foam. A refund of $500.00 was given to the homeowner for areas where we did not install foam. The homeowner kept insisting on Foam and the there simply some areas that were impossible to insulate with foam to achieve the required R-Values. Per our signed contract, USA has the right to change work specifications where conditions indicate such change would be coincidental with the best practices of the industry. Furthermore, in the areas we were unable to foam, we installed Fiberglass insulation and in those areas received better R-Value than a foamed area would have. The work was contracted was for Walls Only. We blew all the Attic slopes in the front of the house at no additional charge in an attempt to go above and beyond. After the final payment, we received no communication from the homeowner of any performance issues. Had we known of post-installation performance issues, we would have been able to address their concern. USA is willing to refund an additional $200.00 to the member to help repair any interior walls that may have been affected during the installation. -Patrick Pitrone

Chester, USA Insulation's Energy Consultant, was very professional and courteous at explaining all about USA Insulation and their process. The work was completed in one day by very courteous and professional people. Siding was removed around the home to allow access for drilling holes in insert the foam insulation. The siding was all put back in place and you could not tell it had been removed. There is a noticeable difference in how quiet our home is now, outside noises are barely heard. The difference in our utility bills is yet to be seen as the winter months are only starting, but we are expecting much lower bills this winter.
Description of Work: In August 2006, USA Insulation insulated all exterior walls using USA premium foam insulation (1178 Total Sq. Ft. Walls) and also filled foundation seam between brick and block to ground level with same foam insulation. Our home had zero insulation on the first floor and about 3 inches on the dormer floor.

I contacted this company for a quote because of a positive experience a neighbor had with them. A rep from USA came out to my house a few days after calling. He took measurements, explained the installation process and explained why USA's foam insulation was superior to other forms of insulation. After some research on the web, I believe foam may be a better product than other insulations, but it is very expensive as compared to fiberglass (3 times the cost). Here's the problem and why I did not select USA. My neighbor paid $3500 for her insulation from USA. She had a lot more done than what I needed done, yet my quote was only $1000 less. I contacted USA to get an explanation. I was told that the salesman would call me back. He never called back! It boils down to that. If the sales guy would have called me back, maybe we could have worked on the price, or at least I could have gotten an explanation. I ended up going with blown in figerglass insulation for 1/3 the cost.

MIke Carey came to my home (last month) as scheduled. He had another person with him, said to be considering joining the company. Mike was nice and personable. He was the first estimate I had and I had a lot of questions after doing some information seeking on the Internet. He gave me a quote on two types of insulation but obviously "Foam" was their specialty and push. He also told me that cellulose was "BANNED" in my area. His written estimate was vague with only the price and area to be insulated, no other details. He said he would call me in a week to follow-up but never called. I also called the building department and found out that cellulose is not "BANNED" and the most popular product for existing homes. I was somewhat interested in the foam product but this company lost me on credibility. I had estimates from two other companies on Angie's List and they seemed to be more thorough, credible and fair.

Originally sent an email which was responded to very quickly. I made an afternoon appointment for one of USA's estimators to come to my home, but a phone call a few hours before said he couldn't make it that day. Rescheduled for the next day. Their representative arrived on time, and was in my home about 45 minutes. However, he seemed to want to spend more time trying to talk me into getting the outside walls insulated too (at 3x the price), rather than just tell me what he could for the attic, which was all I wanted. He eventually quoted me a price for the attic only, which was significantly more expensive than the one other estimate I received.
