plumbing, water heater repair

My water heater is only 5 years old and there has never been any issues, until now...The pilot light will not stay lit. I read multiple websites describing this problem and came to the conclusion that I had a bad thermocouple. I went to home depot and spent less than $10 for a new thermocouple. After reading my water heater manual and some websites, i realized my water heater has a very different and difficult setup and I would be unable to do the job myself. I had my stepfather come over to take a look and he agreed that the job was too complicated so he recommended Jack's Plumbing, although I think he just saw their truck that day and never used them before. I promptly called Jack's plumbing and talked to a very nice and professional secretary. I set up an appt. for later in the week. I was leaving for a short trip out of state that day, but my husband would be home to let the plumbers in to do the repairs. My husband called me once they arrived and diagnosed the problem. He told me that the two men said our pilot tubing was broken at the pilot assembly and the pilot assembly as well as the thermocouple would need to be replaced. I was hesitant to pay $336 for that job when the parts are much cheaper than that!! Also, a new water heater costs around that much according to the ones I researched at Home Depot and Lowe's. My husband really wanted a hot shower, so i agreed over the phone to let them do the repairs, although I wasn't happy about it. I came home a few days later and the pilot was staying lit and everything seemed to be working perfectly. Six days after the initial repair our pilot light stopped working again (staying lit) and the same two men came over to diagnose the problem. This time I was home alone. They didn't take anything apart, all they did was relight the pilot, which still would light, just wouldn't stay lit long enough to heat the tank, they came to the conclusion that I would either need to pay an additional $300-$400 to replace the gas valve, which "may" be bad or replace the whole tank!! I was appalled, because for that price combined with what I paid 6 days prior I could have had a new water heater! They told me it would cost approximately $1,039 to replace and remove the old tank, but refused to give me a discount even though I had just paid them $336 less than a week earlier for a repair that didn't work! I decided I did not want to have them do the work if they wouldn't even offer me a discount substantial enough to make up for what I paid last week. The older man became very pushy at this point and after trying to talk me into it for over a half an hour finally wrote me a quote and left. I could tell he was very unhappy with me as he told me that if I was his daughter he would tell me to replace the tank and take the deal. I kept apologizing and told him I needed to think about it. He just kept pushing and said he would snake my tub and bathroom sink for me while we waited for the new tank to arrive, free of charge. That was nice, but at this point I just wanted them to leave. I felt like I was being bullied into paying way too much when the problem was never fixed in the first place. Since then, I have had to re-light my pilot multiple times every time I even want to take a shower, because it will not stay lit longer than a few minutes. I am still on the hunt for a reputable and affordable plumber to do the job right!
Description of Work: Pilot light of water heater would not stay lit. They cleaned burner compartment and air induction stone screen, cleaned burner assembly, installed new pilot assembly, reinstalled burner/pilot assembly, made proper connections, lit tank, tested for proper operation, bubble tested connections for leaks and then cleaned up job site.

All went well and we were pleased with the whole transaction.
Description of Work: I choose H Jack plumbing for this clogged drain pipe problem due to a good previous experience with H Jack's. A toilet clogged after a big family get-to-gather, so I called them. I was very pleased with the whole experience. The two guys from H Jack, I think were Steve and Benny. They first cleared the clogged line under the aforementioned toilet and then determined that the many years old main sewer pipe outside the house was at least very slow, if not nearly clogged. They recommended a hydro-jet clean-out of the sewer pipe from the house to the city sewer and we agreed. The old pipe was likely never cleaned since it's installation. Steve and Benny did a fine job and then we paid them an extra $100 (pricey I think) to send a camera down the whole pipe while we watched, The camera was valuable to rest our minds about the pipe condition. We now know that the sewer pipe is clear and in solid condition.

I called H. Jack's at 9:22 am. I was surprised and delighted whent I was informed that someone would be out by noon that day. At 11:00 am, John arrived with his partner. He was very polite and extremely professional. He answered all of my questions...even those not related to the central air! He informed me that my unit was filthy and needed to be cleaned. I don't have a backyard water source and so they had to get a portable one from the shop. He explained that an additional cost was involved. I did not feel at all pressured to continue, but I wanted the work done. They did an excellent job and my house is so much cooler. I plan to use them to replace our unit in the near future.

The people were very nice and I didn't have any issue with that. I called around and saw their little signs so I went with them. I am now a member of Angie's List because of my experience with them. They told me it would be so much to fix it after they looked at it. I asked if they were local and they said yes they were all over the place. They said what they had charged so far was to go into the ceiling and they were going to have to call their boss to get a price for going into the overhang for the porch. We think they corrected it but I don't know and they didn't give a guarantee for it. After they reinsulated it he said they were going to have to get a price to put the soffit back and reseal it. He called his boss again to get another price to also fix the 1-inch x 1-inch hole in the ceiling. They didn't replace anything and they basically did the equivalent of removing the soffit and they took a little plywood out. They said they had to charge a little more for a trip charge because they were coming from the east side. It was really high for something that shouldn't have been that high. Everything went back to the way it was in the first place. I would never use them again. I got hooked on the price and it should have never cost that much. If I had the time I could have done it myself.
Description of Work: I used H Jack's Plumbing & Heating because I had a frozen trap. They came to look at the frozen trap and put in a snake and said that it was frozen. They said they would have to send a couple of other guys out the next day. They cut a hole in the ceiling and then said they miscalculated where the location of the trap was. The trap was actually in the overhang over the front porch. They then removed the soffit and plywood to get to the trap. They said it was over-insulated and heat wasn't getting into the trap. They reinsulated it.

Highly recommended! They were prompt, friendly and very professional. They showed me the blockage through their live camera and I could tell that it was my sewer drain below the house. The work went smoothly and they were done in a day. (Interestingly, another vendor (RR) gave me an estimate three times the price that involved jack-hammering the concrete throughout my entire basement.)
Description of Work: My sewer was backed up in the basement and I needed someone to replace the line. The work involved excavating and replacing about 40 feet of sewage drain that was located 10 feet below the ground, going from the front of the house to the street. Fortunately, they did not have to repair the line underneath my basement.

The team originally came to my house to repair/replace some plumbing shared between my neighbor and I (we live in an older condo complex with shared plumbing). Day one they arrived in the morning, drilled a huge hole in my kitchen ceiling, and replaced some of the pipes. At the end of the day, they left the hole (and dust) all over my kitchen without telling me when they were returning to finish the project. After I called the company, I was told that they would be back in a few days. When they returned a few days later, I also asked one of the guys if he would install a kitchen faucet for me (a project that my boyfriend struggled with for several days without success). He said that he would call his boss and ask, being that the kitchen plumbing project was covered under my condo association. I said that I didn't mind paying for the faucet as a separate project and that I understood if they didn't have time to do it on that day. The guys proceeded with the original plumbing project throughout the day and finally got around to my faucet at the end of the day. It took two guys approximately a half hour to install the faucet (which I had purchased previously). They used a saw to remove the old faucet, installed the new faucet, and took the old one when they were finished . For this work they charged me $225. Even though they told me upfront how much it would cost, I believe that this price is way too high. I agreed to this price because I really wanted the faucet installed after several failed attempts. At the end of the day, the guys "cleaned up" and left. I am still finding drywall dust all over my dishes, silverware, etc . To make matters worse, the guy doing the bulk of the work had a strange sense of humor and proceeded to crack jokes all day. The whole experience was frustrating to say the least.

HJacks showed up to give my Dad an estimate (He's 78). Luckily, my Dad called me to tell me what had happened and that he had a plumber on the way. When I showed up, they had given him an estimate of over $700. I am no dummy and I felt this estimate was way out of line. The employee showed me a book that had all the prices set and said "that's the price." I told him it was out of line and to have a nice day. He then said he could call his boss to see if he could give us a better price. The next price that came from his boss was $500. Again I told him "no way". His boss then came down to $350. This is over half off the original estimate. At this point, I took the written estimate and told him we'd call if we needed him. I called a local plumber, and after describing the job, he gave me an estimate of $250 over the phone. He came the same day and the total bill was $225. This happened over a year ago, so they may have changed their business practices.

Our sewer line backed up into our basement on President's Day. Being new to the area, we didn't know who to call. After a panicked, 90-second internet search, we called the closest and most-professional-looking plumbing company. The gentleman who we talked to was very professional, as was the serviceman who came out. After 10 minutes of snaking the line, the serviceman was already mentioning that we may have to replace our entire sewer line because he was having trouble getting through all the roots and debris. According to him, his regular snaking machine broke because of the mess in our lines, so he had to return to his business to retrieve another, more powerful machine (on our dime, of course). Turns out he had to bring another plumber, as well. After attempting to snake the drain 4 times (according to them) they concluded that they did the best they could, it wasn't completely cleared, and we needed to have a complete sewer line replacement, which they quoted us that night at $6,750. Being new homeowners, my boyfriend and I weren't completely sure what we should do, so we paid what we owed ($550) and made an appt for them to come over the next day with a camera. In the meantime, I spoke with the parent of a friend who is in the business and he suggested I consult with another company in the area. They came out the next day. Their first question was 'did H Jacks try to snake it from the cleanout in the yard?' We didn't even know there was a cleanout in the yard. The other company said that should have been the 1st question they asked, as it's sometimes easier to snake from there. They came out and finished the job to our liking. My biggest issue with H Jack's is that I felt like they were trying to up-sell me the entire time. Their prices were fair, however they did not satisfactorily complete the job and spent most of the time trying to convince us that we needed to replace our entire sewer line. I spoke with a manager who offered to come out again with the camera to show us why they recommended we replace the line. I expected to see a mess down there. Now, I'm not an expert, but what he showed us looked far from the catastrophe which they had described. Aside from one section that slipped a bit and created a two-inch lip, and a few minor cracks, everything looked in order. While the other company did not go in with a camera, we explained what we had seen and their advice was to have the line snaked out on a yearly basis. I was extremely disappointed with the quality and focus of the work, and the way the management handled our issues. This business relied on smoke and mirrors to distract us from the problem and attemted to take advantage of young, inexperienced homeowners. Too bad for them that we're smarter than we look!

Two men came, one did most of the work (younger one) My problem with the two men, is one smelled like a brewery.....could not tell which one, older would be my guess, but this was 9am, so he either was drinking already, or never bothered to get rid of night before smells. They took system all apart, looked at system, since it was so old, said there was no way to add any FREON.. To put valves in to be able to add freon, would cost $800-$1,000 and problem still may not be fixed, new system would cost 4-5,000. Had them put all back together, paid bill, they left. Wanted to get second opinion first. Glad I did, was told by Chris from RAM"S over the phone, that I was describing an air flow problem. He told me what to do, I did it, and my air conditioning is working again. I have cold air.
Description of Work: They checked out my air conditioning unit, told me things that needed done..said I could spend $800 to $1,000 and the problem still exists then I would spend 4-5,000.00 for a new system. They did a great job. They had good customer service. They really explained the situation to me and helped me make a decision about the equipment. The way it had been explained to me, how they were going to run the system and run the pipes got totally changed around. When they came to the job they said there was a different way that they thought they should do it. This wasn't a big deal, but came as a bit of a surprise. When some of the equipment was put in, I found out things about the equipment that I had not been told. For instance, with the water heater they have to come out every other year and flush it. I was not aware that it would require special maintenance. They ended up installing an expansion tank on my plumbing line that I did not know I needed. They explained that this is a good thing, and we weren't charged for it, but we were surprised. They told me that if I had any other company come out and service either of those products that it would void the warranty. I realize because they were bringing in pipes and things that they had to leave the storm door open, but they also left the main door wide open on occasion. The cold was coming right in, and I have a cat so this bothered me. They left a lot of lights on while they were working, I understand they needed light but it would have been nice if they had turned off the lights they weren't using. The drilled the holes in the wall where the pipes would go outside and did not cover the holes until they got there with the pipe. One of the guys in particular was sawing PVC pipe he just let it fall onto the ground along with the drill. I would have appreciated a little more care even though the floors are just cement. When they were installing the new thermostat on the wall, it would have been nice if he had washed his hands because I have flat paint on the walls and so now I have finger prints on the wall. On top of that, at one point he dropped the batteries and it fell right on top of the table that was there. It did not do any harm but it could have. I thought they would bring their own cleaning supplies for post installation clean up but instead they just asked to use mine. They told me that if I did not go ahead with them doing the work that they would have to charge me a service call for the gentleman coming out on Sunday which I agreed was fair. They advertise to have low weekend rates. They told me that the service charge if I did not go ahead with the work was going to be $300.00. Sometimes I wonder when these service people go to expensive homes if they take more care than this. On the plus side, they showed up on time. They were very reliable and good about returning my calls. The guys were very very nice. Every single one of them was polite, worked very hard, were patient, and everything appears to have been done in an aesthetically pleasing way. Everything looks very nice. They addressed all of my concerns. They did try to clean up after themselves when they left. They came out on Sunday. They were the only company that I was able to get in touch with, every other company only had an answering service. They were there and they came right out. The gentleman who finished installing the tank-less water heater gave some tips on how to save some extra money using it. He also told me that if there are any problems, like if I am not happy with the temperature that he will come out at no additional charge and fix that for me. The guy that came out on Sunday took a lot of time with us. He was very patient and we are very impressed by him. He was incredibly helpful. They said that they were giving us a good deal for the work because of the time of year and because we had both replaced at the same time.
Description of Work: I had a brand new furnace installed. It was very involved because it was a high efficiency furnace and they had to install the ventilation to the outdoors. I also had a new tank-less water heater installed.

I called on Monday morning and they came out within 45 minutes. Lucas and Jason assessed the problems, got an estimate for me and explained all the work to be done. They spent over 5 hours on the projects. Everything was cleaned up nicely.
I called them late afternoon and they came over the next morning. They found the leak, turned off the gas, and figured out the best way to fix it. They came out on Saturday morning to fix this because I didn't want them working on a gas line when students were in the building. They turned off the pilot lights and boilers for me and did all of the work carefully. Afterwards I couldn't even tell they had been there - they had patched and cleaned everything up. They were great and were very knowledgable and professional. They were fantastic to work with and I trust them completely.

HJacks is a plumbing company besides HVAC and came in my home on a holiday weekend to repair plumbing in my bathroom. What could have been a lengthy and expensive job was done quickly and inexpensive. At that time we discussed heating and ac. I got an estimate that worked for me and they came back to do the furnace and ac. The job was not an easy one because of the type of home I have but they worked hard at it until done, letting me know all the time what they were doing and why. When done they cleaned up and explained how everything worked and answered all my questions. They also do bathroom remodels and I may ask them back for that.

They did a halfway decent job and came out the next day to put the camera down. They showed me what routes were being blocked. They said we would need to dig out the front yard to really correct the problem. I got a second opinion and was told I didn't need to have that done. They were able to come out that same evening but I feel they tried to have work done that really wasn't needed. I don't think they did a good job at what they did.
