Charged me to come and fix the gutter guards that they have installed. Gutter guards have COMPLETELY fallen off. I have called there 5 times, and I get the same response that someone in the office will get back to me, however no one has bothered to call me. I have given them an ample opportunity to come out and fix this issue. All they have to do is call me one time and we can rectify this problem. I would tell them to not ignore your customers. Showed up at my house without contacting me, luckily I was able to come home to oversee the work. If they come out and fix this issue, all will be well.

Response from Mr. Handyman of Cleveland's Northwest Suburbs
We are sorry Mr. Sackett is upset and dissatisfied. We repaired approx. 10 broken gutter straps on his house in Nov of 2012. While we were on site, he asked us to install gutter guards that he had purchased. Unfortunately the gutter guards he purchased were for traditional K-style gutters. Mr. Sacket has an older home with gutters that hang from the eves with straps secured to his roof. The guards are not designed to fit securely in that style of gutter. His complaint originated from heavy winds that dislodged several of his gutter guards. We informed him when the guards were installed that there was not way to guarantee the fit. He was charged accordingly for a standard service call.

Worker arrived in timely fashion and finished what he could. He could not do the tuckpointing because it was raining, so he came back the next day and finished that part. This is the third time I've used this company and have yet to be disappointed!
Description of Work: Attached loose porch railing, board on upstairs porch. Reattached loose vinyl siding. Did tuckpointing of foundation closest to driveway which was exposed by removal and replacement of old driveway. Patched a hole in the ceiling of 2nd floor hallway caused by a leak. Patched holes in walls on the third floor. Installed new bathroom tile in 3rd floor bathroom.

The handyman worked for a few hours on various projects for us, then proceeded to make a slew of "freshman mistakes" during the course of the day. He incorrectly hung up our towel rack (did not use a leveler so it was lopsided and did not ask me where we wanted it to be placed) then started to put together my baby's dresser. There was a damaged part of the dresser and he continued to put this together without asking me what the next steps were (e.g. continue to put it together or disassemble it since we needed to return it.) When I confronted the technician about this, he would NOT discount my rate. He left angry, left a semi-assembled dresser and would not take responsibility for his actions. Not only that, but he also had a laundry list of projects left for him that were unfinished. I contacted Michael Fay who only agreed to discount my rate and come out days later to both disassemble the damaged dresser and reassemble the new one as I had a limited amount of time to disassemble the dresser and return it to in order to get a new dresser. This never happened. He was only able to come out days later as they were "busy" and offered the same technician who did the work before (I did not want the original technician to come who did the shoddy work). He called a day before coming out and said that they would no longer be coming out and they would just not charge me. Days later I received a bill (with a discount) after he had previously told me that we would not be getting a bill. When I informed him that he originally said that I would not be charged, he sent a threatening email and said that he had "changed his mind." Not good business practices. I would NEVER work with Michael Fay or any of his technicians ever again. Here's why - if you have a client issue, you resolve it and fast. You never go back on your word if you saw its on us and then charge people. You don't leave a project unresolved. Lastly, you do not threaten your customers. I hope that this is a "teachable moment" for Michael about what "not" to do.

Response from Mr. Handyman of Cleveland's Northwest Suburbs
In order to respond to the this customer’s review, there are some inaccuracies or distortions that need to be cleared up first. • This wasn’t a first time customer who was unhappy. We have been to her house on over 20 different occasions over 4 years. Nobody calls the same company for services over 20 times without being satisfied. That doesn’t give us a free pass if we make a mistake. But clearly until this last visit, she had been a satisfied customer. • A “few hours” suggest 2 or 3. The technician had already worked 6.5 hours at her house that day when he left at 4pm. He left because she had already already indicated that she wanted the technician to return to complete other items on her list. • Unfinished work - The customer had already indicated that she wanted the technician to return to complete other items on her list. • “Freshman mistakes” is demeaning. But the tech did not use a level to hang the towel bar the first time. The towel bar actually replace a previously-hung towel bar. The tech “eyeballed” it near where the previous towel bar had been hung in the hopes of minimizing drywall repairs. Unfortunately the original wasn’t hung level either. So that mistake is actually on us, my tech corrected once the error had been pointed out to him. And the customer wasn’t charged for the time. • “did not ask me where we wanted (towel bar) hung.” The tech did receive general instructions to hang it in the vicinity of the original (towel bar). So the ultimate location was based on his judgement, which was granted to him from the customer. • “continued assembling dresser after discovering damaged part”. True, but the customer was not available because she was at a Doctor’s appointment. The tech continued to assemble on the theory, that we could find a suitable replacement panel at any Home Improvement retailer, or that the manufacturer could send a replacement part. • Confronted tech about discounting her rate. This conversation did not occur with the customer. However, she did receive an extensive discount against the 6.5 hours of time logged • “he Left angry…” The customer can sometime communicate with a very acerbic and demeaning tone. • The Tech perceived • We apologized for our tech and attempted to make other arrangements for another technician to return to complete the work. When that proved impossible we thanked her for past business sent her a final invoice for less than half of the 6.5 hours time worked. We're sorry for the way things happened that caused this customer to be upset and want to thank them for their past patronage.

Overall, the experience was very pleasant. Within a day after I contacted Mr. Handyman through e-mail, I received a phone call. He made arrangements at my convenience to come to the house and give us an estimate. ( very happy with the estimate ) . He informed us that he would watch the weather situation and as soon as it was warmer, he would set up the appointment to repair the frame. This was also at our convenience, as we informed him originally that this project was not urgent and we preferred it not be done until the weather would permit us to do the follow up painting that would be needed, after the project was completed. As soon as the weather permitted, he called us to set up a time to do the job. The handyman that came was very punctual and very friendly. He explained to me exactly how this happens ( the rotted wood ) and he described the material that he would be using to replace this section. This was a very tight fit and he displayed alot of patience with the continuous measuring and recutting of the material to make it a good fit . The final cost turned out to be even less than the estimate which was a pleasant surprise for us. I have other small projects and one by one will be calling Mr. Handyman in the future. While he was here, I had asked for advice on another issue I have, and he was very informative and explained several different options that could be used to do that repair. Not asking for any kind of an estimate at the time, but I was relieved to hear there were different options to resolve that problem also.
Description of Work: The bottom 6 inches of an exterior patio door frame had rotted out completely from moisture. Mr. Handyman removed all of the rotten wood. He then measured that area to cut out a new piece to be inserted back into that area. The material that was used was not wood but a very hard solid plastic that will not rot from moisture. He then inserted this piece ( with much patience as it was a tight fit ) back into the space and secured it. After it was inserted into place, he then finished it off with a paintable caulking. When the job was completed - he then cleaned up all of the small pieces of wood and shavings from the carpet and outside of the door. While working -he took the time to explain things to me and he described the new material that he was using to replace in this area.

Called for and received estimate. Work was scheduled to be performed at our convenience. Repairman was punctual, knowledgeable and friendly, Price was very fair and work is very good.
Description of Work: The repairman was here ahead of time. (That was good). He used the materials that we had asked for. He was friendly and knowledgeable. The work looks good and is exactly what we wanted. Because the job didn't require all of the time or materials that were estimated he charged considerably less than the estimate. I would certainly recommend this company.

Overall it was a good experience. I gave a B for price only because i normally do my own work but couldn't reach the vents. I also gave a B for quality only because the individual who performed the work left some screws in the driveway where they were parked.
Description of Work: I needed the handyman to put on two oddly located vent guards to avoid birds from nesting. I also had them rescrew the hinges on my storm door since they charge by the hour and extra time was available..

It went very well from the initial estimate to the finished work. The estimate was what I was expecting to pay, and the follow through and actual work was done professionally and promptly. I am very pleased.
Description of Work: I called Mr. Handyman on short notice. I needed someone to insulate and close a gap that was evident around the base of my chimney where it meets the eaves of the house. We had mice issues for about a year now, and this gap around the chimney was a very strong contender for an entry point for these critters. They caulked and sealed the gap for me.

The owner came to my house the night before my schedule appointment to take a look at what needed to be done, exactly. When Bill (the handyman) showed up the next day he was fairly well prepared on what needed to be done. He cut out one plank (I was afraid more would need to be removed) about 16 inches long and popped in a new one. Bill was very nice and let me watch as he worked. All in all it took about an hour and it was all finished.
Description of Work: I had a hardwood floor plank that was broken and needed to be removed and replaced. There appeared to be no sub-floor under the plank so it was a little more complex than just popping one plank out and putting in a new one.

It didn't go at all.........we did not/will not hire him after poor responsiveness to request for an estimate.
Description of Work: Did not hire him. Took them a week to return my initial call asking for an estimate. When he came out (on a Saturday) he said he wasn't busy at all and was only scheduling a week out due to not having much work. Measured for the woodwork we needed done (shoe molding and some exteriror repairs on cedar siding). Said he would have an estimate to us by Monday. Had to call twice to ask for estimate. Claimed he emailed it. As of today (Friday) no sign of any estimate. Call to main number did no good. Will not hire him.

I called Mr. Handyman and requested an estimate for the repairs to my porch. Mike was that person who came out within that week and gave me a prompt estimate over the phone the same day. I was still looking for other estimates ( which I had to wait 3 weeks for). I found that the price was much lower that the others. When we scheduled the work, they were out within 1 week. The work was done within one day. I thought one board on the porch looked "funny" and he come out right away and replaced it. No muss, no fuss. He will be handling all of my repairs in the future. Way to go Mike!!!
Description of Work: My porch floor was rotted and warped along with the base line. They replaced the floor, built the stairs and replace a corner which was dry rotted. THis included taking the porch down to the joists and taking the rails off as well.

There were two stages to the job. Removed the roof and the supports of columns. He did not replaced them and replaced it with a thinner grade for the roof. After he took $45.00 for the discounts he did not take that off. The total came out to $2980.00. I realized that the job did not look supportive and the chair were puncturing the roof. He offered a full deck roofing to be put down. I could not do it because I was leaving. He said he would womanized replacement on the roof. He punctured the roofing materials and it was no longer good. By that time I was gone. I asked my brother to go and take a look at it. My son who is a roof carpenter was so upset for the work. I'm back now and I need to get the work done now.

Response from Mr. Handyman of Cleveland's Northwest Suburbs
Obviously we were very surprised by the negative comments two years after the work wa completed. Our own notes and correspondence with the homeowner after the project was completed indicate she was very satisfied with the work. When the customer first contacted Mr. Handyman in July of 2010 - she had 8 distinct projects that she wanted itemized estimates, which we provided to her. Unfortunately, the total of our estimates exceeded her budget at hat time. There were several revisions as she considered which projects she wanted to complete. Our reccomendation for her 2nd floor porch was to redeck it. While she was in favor of that, the cost ultimately was beyond her budget at the time. Ultimately, the work that was completed was done at her direction and was driven by her budgetary constraints at the time. It appears as though the customer may regret the decisions or compromises that she made two years ago. Again the work that was performed was done at her direction, and she was fully informed of the cost of various alternatives.
