If you live in NE Ohio, DO NOT use these companies (one in same - Chimney and Masonry Co/The Hearth Shop in Westlake)!!! They are so extremely rude and very hard to work with. The woman who answers the phones is supposedly the manager and she is extremely rude and short with people, and doesn't appear to have a very good personality. The sales guy was great at first and then he became rude and short as well. They always tell you they're going to do something and then they never follow up with the customer or get the work done when they say they're going to. Then when you call them out on their BS, they just simply blame the customer and become even more rude. Just an awful company and one of the worst experiences I have ever had with working with a contracting company. If I could give a negative star, I would!

A very fair estimate was completed within 36 hours of contractor's first contact with me. Due to the chimney being fully operational and the fact that it was a very small job (2-3 hours), I was advised there could be up to a 3-4 week wait for the guys to have free time from larger/prior commitments. The Chimney & Masonry Co. artistically completed the work matching the existing mortar color/texture/tooling with only 12 day wait!!! They also secured some loose flashing at no extra charge. Advice to others: If you're particular about the way brickwork should look, call The Chimney & Masonry Co. for a quote. They're conscientious, professional and really good with brick & mortar.

To start with they responded to my phone call the same day, not the case with the other two that I called. They came out in two days and gave me a estimate. The estimate seemed fair but I waited two weeks hoping to get a written estimate from the other companies , never happened. When I called to accept the offer the Office Manager told me that it could be a three week wait to come out IF the weather holds up if it doesn't it could be next spring. She did say if their work load falls into place they would try and fit me in before then. In less then a week they said they could be there the next day about 1:00 pm . Two employees showed up and repaired the chimney that afternoon the next day they were able to get back about 11:00 am and did the tuck pointing of the foundation. They came close to matching the color of mortar for the major of foundation but previous repaired areas did not . They also ground out several areas that I had not realized were failing. They worked will together, with little noise and left the area clean. I did not receive other estimates for the work so I don't if I overpaid or not. I'am happy with the price and the work and working with the crew.

It went very well. Three workers spent the day doing the work and I am very pleased with the results. From the time I received an estimate to the moment the work was finished, the owner of the company and the workmen were courteous and professional; they did exactly what I needed them to do. The warranty is only for one year but I believe that that is standard for this type of work. However, I am hopeful that the step repair will last a good while longer than that. I don't think I could have found a better company to do the work.
Description of Work: I needed to have my brick steps repaired as some of the bricks were broken and the mortar was disintegrating. There are five steps and then a short sidewalk and three steps down to the driveway.

They were transparent about their timing of when they thought they could start work. They kept in contact with me about potential job delays, etc. They completed the job very close to their estimated time of completion and the work was of high quality. I would definitely recommend this company to other homeowners and I plan to use them going forward.
Description of Work: I have a large two-story chimney in the front of my house that was finally giving in to many decades of use. After consulting with several masons and determining that the top half would need to be rebuilt with all of them I shopped around and found Chimney & Masonry Co to have the most competitive quote.

It went well except the replacement door was installed at a slight angle rather than squarely and the installer didn't tell me about it until he was finished. I gave him a pass because I think the original door had also been installed at an angle. Everything else about this service was fine and I would use this company again.

Obviously we chose not to get an estimate.
Description of Work: We called the provider to get an estimate on a substantial masonry job on a house my daughter is buying. She was told that there would be a $50 fee for providing a estimate, to be refunded if the work was performed, even though their Angie's List listing says "free estimates".

Response from CHIMNEY & MASONRY CO
Hello, It is not always necessary to get on top of the chimney to evaluate what work needs to be done. In addition, estimates are only an aproximate evaluation of what services need to be rendered and the costs involved. It requires the set up of expensive equipment to evaluate a project more in depth. For certain projects, we do not want to incur that cost to the customer. We would have to charge for estimates.

The chimney looks great. I have received compliments on the workmanship and final appearance of the chimney. They did a good job matching the brick and mortar color, since my house is not red brick. I dealt with one employee via phone and email, which went smoothly. I saw another employee at my home pre-work start date, who was scoping out the scale of the project. He was very friendly and informative and explained to me what would be done when. I was not at home when any of the work was performed, but everything was left as it was found, minus a couple trampled flowers due to the scaffolding. I was updated that the start date would be delayed, due to weather. I felt, especially considering I was not at home when any of the work was done, that I was kept well informed of the progress and expected work to be performed. It is a huge relief to know that I can cross this chimney work off my list and that I won't have to think about getting any maintenance on it for some time. This company had been recommended to me by a chimney sweep, and I recommend this company to others.

John Anghilante made an inspection and gave us an estimate immediately. Of the three estimates we got,his was the only one to look above the ceiling for and find wet bricks below the roof. He was able to schedule the work for the next week and finished in two days. Since we were installing a new roof and flashing would be installed later, a temporary water-tight seal was installed. The chimney and service rate an A+.

Beware of bait and switch and other unethical business practices. Questioning their conclusion that the whole porch was in dire conditions, I reached out to other contractors and unbiased sources to determine if my only option was to do a rebuild. I found no shortage of other qualified masons that were willing to approach this project with the knowledge and expertise to do the job without ripping everything out and starting over. The quote that Chimney and Masonry provided (see attached photo), included in the scope of work "supporting the concrete deck as needed". And yet, when asked why this couldn't be done, he cited safety concerns and that the only solution was to tear everything out. Not only was I able to find other mason that said the original scope of work could be done, the city inspectors, and the Cleveland Restoration Society, both came out to inspect the existing conditions to determine the viability of rebuilding just the two steps, and preserving the existing concrete porch slab and foundations. Their findings... the existing conditions were perfectly viable and did not warrant a complete rebuild. Both stated that a good mason would have no problem safely shoring up the concrete deck in order to rebuild the steps. I spoke with John (the owner) on the phone on the issue and he still remained unconvinced that it could be done safely. I explained that if I were to do a rebuild, I would risk loosing the terracotta Corinthian columns. I explained to him that the porch has been standing here in great condition for the last 90 years, and that I doubt it will all of a sudden fail. He said, "it only takes 90 years and 1 day for them to fail. " How can you go through life with that attitude? The same could be said about a house or a bridge. He proposed an alternate of pumping the void below the steps full of concrete to shore everything up from below, but wanted me to get sign off by a structural engineer that this wouldn't cause damage to the house. I spoke to several contractors about this, and all thought it was a bad idea and completely unnecessary because it could be safely rebuilt through other tried-and-true methods. I have attached photos showing the before conditions and the condition at which Chimney and Masonry abandoned the job. I had no problem finding a mason who was able to pick up with they left off. They were able to perform the scope of work that Chimney and Masonry was originally under contract to perform. The work came out great. I've attached photos of the finished result that show that it could be successfully completed safely without the concrete deck collapsing. Save yourself the headache and the money and find another qualified contractor who is willing to work with you to provide solutions for what you are trying to achieve, rather than trying to drum up more work.
Description of Work: Beware of bait and switch and other unethical business practices. The scope of work was to replace the front two steps of my porch. After 45 minutes of demolition, I received a phone call and was told that if they were to go any further the whole porch would collapse and that they would have to tear out the entire porch and do a complete rebuild. I was told the the condition was critical and they couldn't proceed. Within 24 hours I had a second quote in my hand for 2-3 times the cost of the original scope of work. Despite me telling them not to cash the deposit check and that I was going to get additional opinions, they cashed the check anyway making it a hassle to get my money back. In the end they billed me for $175 for 45 minutes of labor.
