A representative came out and was very professional. The estimator talked with me for at least 45 minutes and gave me very detailed information. He examined the attic and made several helpful observations. I appreciated his honesty and professionalism, as he disclosed that I could realistically go another year before making roofing repairs. Overall, he was very thorough and quite knowledgeable. I am somewhat wary of larger companies, and I have a reliable service provider for jobs like these, but I will keep Brad Smith in mind for future projects.
Description of Work: He came to give an estimate on a roofing job and, while at my house, he also inspected my chimney, climbing up to inspect the attic and the chimney himself.

They came very early in the season because the roof was leaking very badly. Roof and decking was replaced in one day. Only problem was that a lot of cedar siding was removed from upper floor and now has to be replaced. Satisfied with work, I just wish the workers had been more careful with the siding so that so much would not have to be replaced.
Description of Work: Replacement of roof over family room and garage. replacement of roof on upper part of a-frame. Replaced approx. 25 sheets of decking and a large amount of rafters due to rot.

THEY DID THE FRONT PART OF MY HOUSE THE YEAR BEFORE AND I WANT THEM TO COME BACK ALSO TO DO MY GARAGE AND OTHER SMALL AREAS ON MY HOUSE. THEY ARE CLEAN AND NEAT. THEY DO THE WORK IN A TIMELY MATTER. THEIR PRICES ARE GOOD. THE QUOTE IS USUALLY GOOD AND THEY USE QUALITY PRODUCTS.
Description of Work: THEY RIPPED OF THE BACK PART OF THE ROOF TO THE HOUSE AND REPLACED SOME OF THE WOOD AND PUT SOME ICE GUARD ON IT AND THEN PUT TAR ON IT AND THEN SHINGLED IT.

Overall I thought it went pretty good - I would have liked them to follow up with me after the roofing was complete. Initially I met with them and got an estimate and I was pleased with the price and some of their work where I visited the houses they had done. Once I had a good estimate I contracted the work. There was some delay due to the weather and it being the busy season. Once they arrived they completed the work quickly within two days keeping their mess to a minimum. After they were completed no one followed up with me on what had been done and explaining what to expect after they were done.

I'm glad I didn't choose them. I was disappointed though. No other roofers I've talked to have requested a deposit like that. The cost listed is total, with the Angie's List discount included. ($5,300)
Description of Work: They gave me an estimate in September for a tear off and new roof. They wanted 1/3 deposit, which was $1,800.00, which I gave them. They said the work would be done in October, but by December, they hadn't called me and the work was not done, so I asked for my money back. They gave me my money back a couple days later.

While the work was done to our well and the teams were very professional, we had significant difficulty in getting the work scheduled. After not hearing from the company over an extended period of time, a representative from Brad Smith would call a few days in advance to schedule the work and then a team would not show up. When we called to follow up on status and scheduling, we were told that someone would call us to schedule the work. This has been our third experience with Brad Smith; all have been similar. We currently have a contract which was signed in August 2007 and the work has not yet been completed (February 2008). I have attempted to talk with the owner (Brad Smith) but have not received a call back. I have been told by his representative that our job was delayed due to emergency jobs and larger projects. In the meantime, the plaster ceiling damage is worsening!

The company is great. They always call you and keep you abreast of when they are coming out. They do good work clean up and put back whatever is in your yard. The only thing I wasn't happy with is the long wait for our job to be started. They have a lot customers so I was originally told approx one month wait and it wound up being two months. To be fair part of the delay was due to weather as we were going from fall to winter.

Estimator showed up early, was very informative about what the problems were with our roof. The only reason we chose another contractor was because the other contractor's salesperson had a very good rapport with my wife and I (to be honest, my wife did not meet the estimator from Brad Smith). Quote was received in the mail a week later, which, while it was low-pressure, was also less personal.

POORLY IS NOT A STRONG ENOUGH WORD!!!! Two siding companies were called and sited that the leak was not from the siding. Old step flashing found when hose was pointed at the problem corner area, water came into the house. This was with the siding company present. Brad Smith came out and did repair the corner and installed new step flashing. However, they still tried to say it was the siding causing the leak. Since the repair to the corner the leak has ceased. We had the interior damage fixed by another company, and this week we did have the siding completed even know that was not the problem. My interest in this is to protect my house from damage. My interest is not out to ruin this company?s reputation. If I was only interested in blaming them for siding problems, why would I have contacted 2 other siding companies. I felt the need to inform others of our negative experience with Brad Smith Roofing, not to sully their reputation and to protect other consumers.
Description of Work: This is turning out to be a continuing saga. After installing a new roof in November, we STILL have the same leak we had before the roof was installed. A Brad Smith installer came out and told us the siding was the problem. We had 2 companies come to give us an estimate for siding. The first company discovered thatBrad Smith did not replace old, rusted step flashing and told us that we did not need new siding. When notified, Brad Smith did come out a week later to replace the step flashing that should have been replaced 7 months ago. We have now had a second company come for a siding estimate. They too said they did not need to sell us new siding. They tested with a hose and found that water is STILL coming in through the roof...due to shingles being laid incorrectly next to the new step flashing. So, now, we get to contact Brad Smith AGAIN to have them come out to correct the problem...In the meantime, every time it rains, we are getting drywall damage, ceiling beam damage and wallpaper damage......

Response from Brad Smith Roofing Co Inc
We at Brad Smith Roofing would like you to read the following letter written by the Building Inspector of the City of Elyria after he visited with them multiple times that they are conveniently choosing to leave out what the Inspector had to say about the quote "continuing saga." City of Elyria Building Inspector" As a follow up to my site inspection of your home water problem, I do NOT see where the new roof is causing the problems you are having with moisture. There appears to be other entry points for water. The siding on the upper level was not finished properly. There was no J channel installed. The gable end vent is broken and gaping holes could be seen. From your input about what the siding contractor did and where the wet materials were seen, the leak has to be at a higher level than where the shingle tins (step flashing) are located. On the upper level where the J channel should have been installed, the siding should have been cut above the roofing materials and at the eaves a kick out type flashing or diverter should have been put in place. This kick out flashing would direct any water out and over the siding below. It is recommended that 1/2" space should be open between the roofing and J channel. Should you have any other concerns feel free to contact me Monday through Friday 8am-4:40pm. Sincerely, Building Inspector City of Elyria. " Dated July 30th,2008 PP#06-23-025-106-008. This happened to be the written opinion of a government employee in the hometown of the members. This is not another contractor that did not remove any of the materials in the said area to thoroughly investigate the cause of the leak. This is an unbiased agent whose job is to know what is right and what is wrong about any situation dealing with construction. This letter is available for any prospective clients to read for themselves if they are curious to know if these outlandish remarks given in their report have any merit whatsoever. The letter proves that they, unfortunately, are not interested in listening to Brad Smith Roofing or their own City Department and refuse to accept the circumstances that they're faced with in replacing their siding. We immediately responded to their call that they had a leak, which just so happened to come 8 months after the installation. Before this call, they went through the worst of wintertime conditions and the normal spring rains we get here in Cleveland and they had no leaks whatsoever. Now they have clearly had wind driven rain get behind their over 30 year old plastic siding that is broken, shattered and open in many areas and never installed properly from the start. They have tried to convince us, and the City, that it is our fault the leak is occurring now even though they admit in their report that the leak was present before we did the roof. It is also clear that the Inspector saw nothing wrong with our installation, but multiple items wrong with their siding. In our last visit with them, we cut open some of the siding above where the leak was in to investigate the problem. What we found was wet, saturated insulation behind the siding and well above the roof and caulking that felt like concrete behind the corner of the wall above the leak that hardened for years after obvious, many attempts to stop the leak. We have the physical evidence, pictures and video and, now, written documentation that the problem they have is not the problem of Brad Smith Roofing. We have expended time and labor to help the client solve their issue, but they are only interested in blaming us for their siding problems. It is clear to us that they would rather try to defame the reputation of Brad Smith Roofing than solve their problem, or they just want Brad Smith Roofing to solve their problem for free. As you will read on the other 190 reports of our on Angie's List, the overwhelming majority of them are A's. We hope that any member of Angie's List will look past this lonely grade of F, see the many A's , and allow us the opportunity to show you how professional our operation really is. This has been an unpleasant and unfortunate experience for us as well, however, now we are left having to defend ourselves after attempting to help a client, in which case no one wins. Thank you.

Company never called back to set up a second appointment to get the sample they claimed they needed; no written estimate was ever received. I phoned to ask if they planned to follow-up; was told someone would call me. I never heard back. Their 'rough estimate' was OVER twice the cost of every other company that provided written estimates. If Brad Smith roofing didn't want the job, I would have preferred to be told on the first meeting or at least have the courtesy of having my call returned. And the cost seemed to be grossly inflated. Disappointing. I'm giving a rating of C only because they did come out for a first look. But no follow-up, waste of my time.
Description of Work: Company promptly returned first call; came out to look at job. Pleasant, punctual; when asked, gave a very rough estimate of cost. I was aware that this was just a ballpark figure and not at all binding. Representative said they would contact me to return to get a sample so they could more accurately write up an estimate.

I was able to hire someone else to repair the three areas for $750.00. No more leaks.
Description of Work: Three areas of my roof were leaking and needed repairs. One area where the roof adjoined a dormer, one area where a breezeway roof adjoined siding for the main house, and one valley where the breezeway roof adjoined the garage roof. Response from Brad Smith Roofing Co Inc
OUR GOAL AT BRAD SMITH ROOFING COMPANY IS TO GUARANTEE THE SERVICES THAT WE PROVIDE. WHETHER IT'S A LONG TERM LABOR GUARANTEE FOR A NEW ROOF OR A SHORT TERM GUARANTEE FOR A MUCH NEEDED REPAIR, WE WANT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. HAVING SAID THAT, THE MEMBER HAD WOOD LAP SIDING IN POOR CONDITION, WITH PEELING PAINT AND SPLITS AND CRACKS THROUGHOUT IN TWO OUT OF THE THREE AREAS IN WHICH HE WAS LEAKING. IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT IT HAD BEEN LEAKING FOR SOME TIME BECAUSE A MESSY LAYER OF ROOF CEMENT (TAR) HAD BEEN SMEARED IN THE AREA WHERE THE ROOF AND SIDING CAME TOGETHER. THIS TAR WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE A PERMANENT SOLUTION; IT'S MERELY A TEMPORARY FIX TO A PERMANENT PROBLEM. IN THIS SITUATION, THE SIDING AND ROOF WERE BOTH CONTRIBUTING TO THE LEAK AND IN ORDER TO GUARANTEE A SOLUTION, THE SIDING AND THE SMALL AREAS OF ROOF NEEDED TO BE REMOVED, WATERPROOFED, AND REPLACED. THIS IS THE REASON FOR THE COST THAT WAS PRESENTED TO THE MEMBER AND HE WOULDN'T ACCEPT THE FACT THAT THE SIDING WAS AN ISSUE. SURELY THE $750 REPAIR HE WAS ABLE TO FIND SOMEONE TO FIX IT FOR INCLUDED WORK THAT WAS FAR FAR LESS INTENSIVE THAN WHAT WE PROPOSED AND AFTER A HARSH WINTER OR TOUGH RAINY SEASON HE WILL BE BACK TO WHERE HE STARTED FROM, ONLY OUT $750 BECAUSE IT DIDN'T SOLVE HIS PROBLEM PERMANENTLY, ONLY TEMPORARILY. AGAIN, OUR GOAL IS TO FIX YOUR PROBLEM PERMANENTLY. AFTER 43 YEARS, BRAD SMITH HAS EXPERIENCED WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T WORK AND TRIES TO PASS THAT EDUCATION ON TO OUR SALES STAFF AND CLIENTS.
