During the planning stage where we retained Walt to draft blueprints, he was fantastic to work with. (Separate job for a few thousand). Several years later we contacted him to do the job, and the planning stage of that and the first month of construction were fantastic except for jobsite cleanup. However, he showed up one day with a gash on his forehead, and said he had knocked over a bulldozer while doing pond work, but was fine. After that, we began arguing, and after about 4 fights, it finally dawned on me that he had serious memory problems. As stated in our contract (Spec A), we purchased an antique fireplace mantel. Walt said the fireplace vent needed to have a 90 degree elbow, but the framers built the frame to the ceiling (modern style), and the vent went strait up that frame. Walt wanted a change order because the wall "needed to be flat". After arguing for 15 minutes that the fireplace would need to be moved, I finally agreed. Guess what? The firebox had to be moved. If he had followed up with his original plans, he would have been fine. We wanted tile on the fireplace, and Walt suggested we put a metal strip around the edge of the arch to hide the cuts in the tile (great idea) He later asked the guy how thick to make it, and he said 3/4". I mentioned that our tile was extra thick, so Walt measured it and said that since it was 1/8" inch thicker than the allowance the tile give had given in his calculation, he would order 7/8". The next day he reverted back to 3/4. I tried to correct him three different days, and he just couldn't understand why I was pestering him about the tile being thick and didn't trust him. He ordered the 3/4" and was happy with it when it arrived, but then when the tile guy went to install and said it wasn't deep enough, He then said he couldn't understand why the fabricator didn't make it 7/8". Bathroom tile - we wouldn't figure out why he didn't jump on getting it done while we were waiting for the wood flooring to arrive. Turns out they didn't order the baseboard ahd chair rail tile (as stated in the original spec A), and Walt couldn't figure out why the sub showed up and left 5 times. He also had a hard time with our granite selections. He wanted us to use his preferred vendor, but I wanted different granite. He said ok, and that he would set up the account, but a month later he wanted to use his vendor. So I handed him the stack of samples and list from our supplier, and he went in and determined that yes indeed, we could go with the company we wanted. He then wanted me to pick out the slabs, and I asked if he could make the templates first. He said ok, and nothing happened for a month until I asked about progress. The old Walt would have asked if I could go with him and do it together the next day. Jobside cleanup: Seriously lacking on several levels. Walt had someone lay cardboard over the stairs to protect them, and when it wouldn't stay, he wanted my son to do it. My husband ended up doing it for free. I had to be involved in the work and getting a quote from my regular cleaning lady, he didn't articulate what was needed and I was supposed to know. So I gave her estimate, but explained I wasn't sure what to ask for and that it wasn't a firm quote. He didn't seem to have a regular cleaning crew. Walt had cleaners pick up the protective cardboard that was on the wood floor and do final cleaning before the tile was done, only to announce later that he hadn't intended it to be final cleansing. Walt was good about redoing work, and most of the work was good in the end. He expected to take 3-4 months, but it took 9 months. He had an easier time in the basement because the items were from his favorite suppliers instead of our custom products. The issues in the basement were minor things like a few of the lights had to be moved around becasuse they guessed where to install them instead of following Spec B. When Walt would ask me a question and I would want to discuss it with my husband, he would tell me not to call him. This happened numerous times. When I tried to remind him of things he was planning on doing, he would get upset that I did not trust him. Walt is an honest man and tried his best to please me even though he often had no idea what I expected because he couldn't remember our conversations.
Description of Work: Finish off attic (spec A) and part of basement (spec B), including framing, hvac, custom woodwork, installing antique fireplace and many other high detail items that were special order. Work in basement was not generally custom products.

Walt and Lew were easy to get a hold and helped us during all aspects of the project from planning to building. We have been extremely pleased with the results and quality of the work. Our home is older and a great deal of effort and time was put in to matching the original design and staying true to the originality of the home while modernizing it.

My experience with WMB Builders Inc went beautifully. It was very well done and very well thought out and they participated, brought it up to a finish. I sketched it out and then I corrected a problem and they went ahead and made a blue print of it. They were professional in the way they presented the sketches and corrected anything that was misunderstood and was quite helpful in getting my ideas down. ‘A' in all sects and materials and specifics arranged and that's in consideration.

From the initial design process to jumping through all of the hoops with our bank to finishing the project WMB did a great job and I would recommend them. Pros: Quality of work Majority of subcontractors are experienced and do quality work For the subs who didn't know their a** from a hole in the ground (HVAC and Rite Rug) WMB stepped in an quickly resolved issues. These are the type of guys where their word is their bond. Cons Near the end of the project, they were distracted by other jobs and the progress moved at a glacial pace. They were too hands off with the flooring sub (Rite Rug) We had hard wood floors installed by Rite Rug. They messed it up and had to sand and stain the floor a second time. There was also a miss-commiseration with Rite Rug on which areas of the house were to get hard wood installed. All Rite Rug did was point fingers and make excuses. The WMB guys got it resolved and our floors look beautiful. I would not trust Rite Rug to sweep my sidewalk. If WMB steers you to Rite Rug for flooring work ask them to use someone else.
Description of Work: We had a 16x16 room addition put on the back of our house.

Walt Morrow was quick to set up an appointment to discuss the remodeling project and understand what we wanted. Of the contractors who provided estimates, Walt had some of the best suggestions for the overall design of the project. Once we had agreed upon the design, Walt provided a conceptual design for the project and a detailed breakdown of the costs and work that would be done. I found Walt knowledgeable and easy to talk to. WMB Builders was one of two contractors who we felt would do a good job. In the end we picked the other contractor. However, if that contractor had not been available, we would have been comfortable with WBM Builders.

They did a very good job. They said it would be 8-10 weeks. It turned out to be six months. Not sure if this was because it was vacant or what. Once we told them we needed to get the house on the market, they got it done. If our decision was based on the sales person, we would not have gone with them. He told us don't worry about the basement, however, this is where we had some major structural issues, which they did fix when we became aware of them. The house looked great afterward and sold in a month.
Description of Work: Renovated in-laws house. House was empty and needed to update for sale. Updated kitchens and baths, painted, carpeted, hardwood flooring. Re-did ceilings. Fixed basement walls from leaks.

WMB Builders is sorry for your inconvenience. It did take a day to verify with our production supervisor that we would have scheduling problems adding a project in Grove City with our current work load. I am sorry if I did not make it clear that there would be a time lapse in the return call and why. WMB Builders does not like to turn away an opportunity for business, but more importantly we do not want to not be able to provide top quality service.

The whole project took a little longer than we thought it would, but it went really well. Everyone involved was extremely professional and considerate. I am not sure whether the price was higher or lower than others because none of the others saw the big picture the way Walt did. The subs he uses are also first class. His expertise is worth any extra we may have paid, and without it, we would still be having problems.
Description of Work: The problem was a gutter on the roof over our front porch that constantly overflowed during even moderate rain fall. The water would saturate the ground around the concrete slab of the porch. Over time the slab started cracking both left to right and front to back with the center sinking. Then the water would accumulate in the middle of the slab and run through those cracks. So the concrete slab had to be replaced. We had a magnolia tree right up against the house next to the porch and the leaves and flowers would accumulate in the gutter which was clogging it up. So we also wanted to remove the tree. Walt Morrow got the job because, of all of the contractors that came to bid on it, he was the only one that recognized that there simply was not enough down spouting to accommodate the size of the roof. He maintained that even without the tree clogging it up, the downspout would not handle the volume of water flowing into that gutter. We actually had noticed that it did still overflow, even right after we cleaned it out. The project included the removal of the tree (subcontracted to a landscaping firm that I knew from experience was excellent), the replacement of the concrete slab (also subcontracted), the replacement of the gutter with a bigger gutter, and the addition of a second, larger downspout with a pipe buried down to the curb.

After several weeks we contacted the company to ask if the plans were ready. We were told that they would contact us soon. After another month I emailed the company asking to receive the plans we had purchased. The owner called me back and apologized profusely. He had gone on vacation shortly after our consultation and had delegated our project to an employee who had dropped the ball. We received the plans the following day. We did eventually use some of the ideas included in those plans but we were uncomfortable hiring this company to perform the actual remodel.

I selected someone else to do the work.
Description of Work: I contact WMB for a quote to remodel 2 closets and install a new bathroom downstairs in my home in Marion Village. Circa 1905! They were nice, prompt, courtious and would perform quality work without a doubt. When I met at their office to review the estimate, they were just totally out of touch with reality on the estimate. Almost twice some of the other bidders @ $19,000. Like that is going to increase the value of my property by that much. So I thanked them for their time and chose someone else.

While I waited some time to call WMB, when I did they were very, very friendly on the phone and were able to set up an appointment fairly quickly. When Walt came to the house, we was very attentive to what I wanted. He was also gave me a few options that I had not thought of before, which was nice. I made it quite clear that the main purpose of my purchasing the plans was because I needed a 'picture' before I actually started to plan the remodel. I am sure that was not what he wanted to hear; however, that is where I was at the time. I also gave him a budget that was probably pretty low. However, I explained that the neighborhood that I live in would not support a $40,000 remodel. Everything seemed to be OK, and Walt had indicated that he would get me the picture within the week. I waited 2 weeks and still no plans or contact from them. So, I called the company and Walt had indicated that he would bring the plans over within the next week. The total time to wait for the picture was about a month. Walt delivered the plans, gave us names of companies to shop for supplies and gave us estimates for various options. All in all it was not a bad experience, I was just a little frustrated at the amount of time it took.

We expected design advice and did not get any advice. We did not get sny response after the first consultation until I sent an emsil asking whast the next step was. We then received te bad sketch by email.
Description of Work: We had a design consult with drawing and plans for bathroom remodel . We were expecting someone who was experienced with design and ideas to give us that would help us best come up with a plan for our needs and to improve the look of our bathroom.. The man who came to our house just stood in our bathroom and asked what we wanted done. He offered no suggestions to us . We finally received a primitive looking sketch of our bathroom with nothing different except to change our bathroom shower a little . He gave us a retail bathroom shop phone number to go to for design ideas. What a waste of time and money.

We needed a lot of work done to our home before it could be placed on the "for sale" market. We received 3 quotes and WMB was in the middle of the other bids. Walt Morrow was a pleasure to work with and was very professional. We no longer live in Columbus, so we needed someone who we could trust and the first minute I met Walt, I new we would be in good hands. WMB offered different remodeling floor plan designs for us to choose from. Once we did decide, the start date was agreed upon and Walt and his WMB team took over. Updates, with pics, were emailed to us weekly and I could always get in touch with Walt or his foremen if I had any questions or concerns. We were very pleased with the final result and would strongly recommend WMB Builders.

They have very high quality work, great responsiveness and they are conscientious of their work. The only problem was with the money, we paid them up front for everything and we went on vacation. We found out that while we were gone the work did not get done. He let us know why the project wasn't done and the settlement for not getting the work done on time was that they were able to help with extra work. I would recommend them to others as they do have high quality work. I would use them in the future.

We very much appreciate your taking the time to submit a rating. We hope you will consider a correction to the payment schedule. You stated “we paid for everything up front”. Our records indicate that our agreement was a 50% deposit at the time the contract was signed and the remaining balance when the work was completed. The major reason for the deposit was to cover the cost of the granite counter top unique to your home. I apologize for not making it clear that 5 working days may not be enough time to complete the work. There were a number of steps involved in your project and everything had to work to perfection with no room for equipment failures, etc. for all of the work to be completed at the end of your week vacation. Unfortunately, we did miss the time line by three days. We appreciate your business and apologize for not being able to complete the work within your vacation week. We also thank you for reporting that we kept you informed while you were away. We understand that not being home to see the progress is stressful, so we do try to soften that stress by keeping our customers informed. Walt Morrow

We appreciate your taking time to express your concerns. Without feedback we are only guessing as to how to improve our service. It is all communication, but communication is a two way street. We leave an appointment thinking we have a clear understanding of what the client wants, but if we missed their vision we need to hear that so we can adjust.

Walt and Lew were excellent to work with. Walt recommended finish materials that really improved the final appearance. The quality of the workmanship was excellent. We worked through a few communication issues.....mostly just checking on the status of the progress, but Walt and Lew were responsive and addressed our questions and concerns to our satisfaction. We appreciated the straightforward Walt's experience and insights when planning the project. Very knowledgeable and makes you feel that they will do the job the best way they know how without taking shortcuts. We plan to do additional work with WMB Builders, and would recommend them to anyone seeking a high quality outcome.
Description of Work: The work involved a porch room enclosure, including extension of the concrete porch for a room 16"x22", enclosed with windows and sliding glass door, modification of the roof to tie properly into the porch room, re-siding the exterior, and finishing the interior with knotty pine planking.

Walt Morrow was the one who came for the appointment. He was on time, and took very thorough measurements. He mentioned some ideas as he was going around, and I shared some of what I had in mind. We are in the very, very early stages of redesigning, and had hoped he could help come up with creative ideas for the use of space, efficient layout, etc. I was looking forward to hearing from him, but when his assistant finally sent some initial lay outs, they were quite a disappointment. He clearly had not remembered much of what I'd said we were looking for, and the designs were completely unimaginative and contained exactly two changes to our existing layout. Nevertheless, when I contacted him for follow-up, thinking the more detailed design plan would show some of the ideas we'd discussed, he never responded. I'm not sure if they thought we weren't serious because we're so early in our plan, but surely we can't be the first people he's come across who spend a long time planning before actually starting work. I do think he'd be good for someone who is looking just to upgrade finishes with very mainstream ideas (granite countertops, prefab cabinets, preselected color schemes, etc.), but we were hoping for someone who could actually work with us to design what we had in mind. In any case, I'm glad that the experience showed us he was not the right contractor for us before we committed to working with him.

Response from WMB Builders Inc
Sometimes, the only thing to say is “I’m sorry.” At WMB Builders, we take pride in the service we provide to all of our customers. It is always distressing to hear that we have failed to meet a customer’s expectations. I take full responsibility for the communication breakdown that occurred and offer my deepest apologies. In part, I have to say that the overwhelming response from the Angie’s List community led to a breakdown of some of our normal processes. Our limited-time promotion for Angie’s List customers, which offered preliminary designs worth $500 for just $50, generated much larger volume than we were prepared for. We have honored every single request that we received during the promotion. However, I must admit that we did not have systems in place to handle this level of volume with our normal attention to detail. We are learning from our mistakes and promise to do better next time. I also recognize that we should have done a better job in guiding you to provide us with the information we needed in order to meet her expectations. We did provide four designs for the master bath and one kitchen design, and received an email indicating your approval. These designs were based on the best information we had at the time. We rely on our clients to help us shape the preliminary designs by communicating their budget and value expectations as well as their aesthetic ideals. The more effort our customers put into this process, the closer our preliminary designs will be to their vision and expectations. Ultimately, I realize that I needed to provide better guidance and follow-up communication to ensure that we had the information we needed. We want to thank you for rating us as highly as you did in other areas. We also value feedback that allows us to improve. If you would consider giving us another chance in the future, we would welcome the opportunity to exceed your expectations. We look forward to continuing to serve the Angie’s List community. Respectfully, Walter N. Morrow Co-Owner

We did find the meeting very honest and informative. They were quite upfront with us, and we did not feel we were just being a handled a sales pitch to get our business. Given the market at the time of meeting, they actually suggested it was wiser to buy a current home and call them for any needed remodeling, than to build one from scratch. AS we were quite noobish to the home building/buyign experience, we really appreciated their insight.

The quote was about $31000 initially. It's a reputed company. The guy worked with me quite a bit. He seemed very trustworthy. He tried to work out something for me, but it didn't work out budget wise for him to do any of the work for me. It was too much of money. I would recommend people to get a quote from him. He was very professional. He worked really hard to try to get a business, but it didn't work out. I didn't have any problems with him. He was responsive. I would definitely consider getting another quote from him in the future.

We sought out three estimates for this job. WMB were in the middle for time and cost. Walt was great to work with. He made suggestions that we had not thought of and we love the end result. Walt and Lew were very professional and considerate. Everyone that entered our home - drywallers, painters, trim, electrician, etc. - were wonderful. This work was completed over a few weeks and each night they left our house clean and safe for our son. When we found out that our daughter was arriving sooner than we had expected, they made every effort to finish the work before we came home from the hospital. The amount of communication that we received in the way of how things were advancing and what we could expect was great. We felt very informed and involved throughout the entire process. We also appreciated that Walt and Lew checked in with us often to make sure that the work was going well, that we were being treated well, and that we were happy. Our daughter's room is beautiful and turned out better than we had even envisioned! It was well worth the cost. We would definitely recommend them to anyone needing remodeling completed on their home.
Description of Work: WMB Builders converted our loft into a bedroom for our daughter.
