CARE Heating & Cooling Inc

Heating and Air Conditioning, Appliance Repair, Plumbing,

About us

If you are familiar with any of our advertising you know that these words are at the end of each and every one of our ads. But these eight words are more than just a slogan at CARE Heating and Cooling. They are our motto and the basis of our business philosophy, and the way we want to be remembered by you at the end of the day. From the beginning I wanted CARE be a different kind of company. After spending many years working for other heating and cooling companies, I became alarmed by the trends I was seeing in the residential heating and cooling industry. “Increase sales”, “raise your prices” and “make every employee a sales person” became the operating statements of many companies, leading to the biggest fraud of all: paying service technicians to sell replacement furnaces and air conditioners. In the 1980s a major manufacturer began to promote to its dealers a unique sales technique – have service technicians sell replacements. The rationale was that a service technician had the inherent trust of the consumer. If a repair was needed a service technician had ability to take advantage of that trust and offer to install a replacement system. This provided an immediate solution to an immediate problem that would lock out any competition, result in a much higher than normal selling price and much higher profits. Because companies make more money, a lot more in fact, selling you a new system rather than fixing the one you own this approach was widely adopted over the next couple of decades. To generate even more sales and profits many companies today apply a lot of pressure to service technicians to sell even more. Several local companies’ guidelines state specifically that a consumer is to be advised to replace their furnace if a repair, even a minor one, is needed whenever a furnace or air conditioner is over 10 years old. They set goals for their service technicians to turn at least 1 in 10 service calls into sales leads and pay them a commission when a unit is sold. Service technicians can also get caught up in the quest for more money, with some diagnosing problems that may not actually exist just to earn a commission. This is how “cat toys in furnaces” and “chipmunks with attitudes and power drills” became major problems. So what makes CARE Heating and Cooling different? It is my philosophy that we are in business not only to get new customers, but more importantly to keep them. Never will anyone in the service department profit by recommending to a consumer to replace their furnace or air conditioner. Not only do we offer free second opinions for a diagnosis of a bad compressor or heat exchanger, we will often second opinion ourselves when condemning equipment to be sure we have not made a mistake. If a mistake is made, it will be an honest one and we will stand behind everything we do. Lastly, you can trust us to offer you the lowest possible price on all services and installations we do. We are, and always will be, the best value in town. Thank you for considering CARE Heating and Cooling. Let us prove to you why you should call us “When you need a company you can trust.” Call CARE for the best possible service in central Ohio. They provided an estimate when they came out to assess the situation, but from estimate strength action was nothing. I wouldn't buy their maintenance package.

Response from CARE Heating & Cooling Inc
We do not feel our company is deserving of the customer’s grades in this review. CARE has responded to the only request the member had for demand service in a matter of hours and we have arrived to all of our appointments on time. The CARE Plan purchased by the member saved them a substantial amount of money off our already competitive prices, and to date we have not received any report from the member regarding the quality of our work. Here is a summary of our history with this member: “We used CARE Heating and Cooling Inc big deal purchase in June for maintenance. We bought a sort of maintenance package from them.” The member states he purchased a “big deal”, but to date CARE Heating and Cooling has not participated in any Angie’s List “big deal” promotions. The member actually purchased our maintenance agreement, which we call a CARE Plan, during a service appointment in March. On March 8th 2013, the member called our office to schedule a service appointment because their furnace was not working. We dispatched our technician Andy the same day and he found that the draft motor in the furnace was defective and needed replaced. Due to the cost of the repair, Andy recommended the member purchase a CARE Plan. Our CARE Plan offers customers the benefits of priority scheduling, two semi-annual tune ups, a 10% discount off our flat rate pricing, and we waive our service call fee which is normally charged on any service appointment. When the cost saving benefits of the CARE Plan were applied to the member’s appointment and needed repair, the savings totaled more than $75.00. Andy returned the next day with the necessary motor (an OEM part was required and it was shipped to us from our supplier) and the customer opted to purchase the CARE Plan at this time. “They provided an estimate when they came out to assess the situation,” Based on the date in the member’s review, our assumption here is that the member is referring to the appointment for their air conditioner tune up that was performed on May 7th, 2013. This tune up was included as part of the member’s CARE Plan and performed at no charge. We have not performed any work for this member since May 7th, including the date of June 20th, 2013 that is listed in the review. “but from estimate strength action was nothing.” We are not quite sure what the member means by this statement. During the tune up on May 7th, our technician Nathan found that the member’s air conditioner was low on refrigerant. He gave the member several options, including performing a leak search to determine if and where any refrigerant leaks in the system were, adding a product to the system called AC Leak Freeze that is designed to repair any small refrigerant leaks, and recharging the air conditioner with the necessary amount refrigerant. The member opted to recharge the unit with refrigerant and declined the other repair options. With the member’s CARE Plan discount, he saved nearly $20.00 on this repair. “I wouldn't buy their maintenance package. “ To date, by purchasing our CARE Plan the member has saved over $95.00 off our standard rates and had an air conditioner tune up performed at no charge, a service that is normally billed at $118.00. Still outstanding under the member’s CARE Plan is a furnace tune up which will be performed this fall, also normally billed at $118.00. Additionally, should the member need to schedule a service appointment for any reason, they have the peace of mind that we will give them priority service and waive our service call fee. Given all of this value, we are not sure why the member would regret their CARE Plan purchase.

Then we contacted CARE salesperson and customer service, here is more detail for those issues: 1. Lennox replied in the email that bent fins are pretty normal and "it is just very hard to not bend a few of them...they can get a fin comb and comb out the bent fins if needed." When the Lennox rep came on site, insited that no hurting on performace and the bent fins and dents on fins are normal because their products are cheap than others. 2. For the damaged umbrella, they agree to reimburse after customer gets it repaired (thanks), 3. Fixed on 7/16 by service call, 4. The salesperson from CARE came on site, looked at the unclosed case but insisted that the installation was perfect and she would give it perfect score on the project, simply declined to fix. Until city inspection, it was found that some Duct hangler were not put back up and case was not closed, called CARE, after that CARE agreed to send service to fix the unclosed case. Because the A/C inner case was not fitted first time during installation, it took the service man more effor (thanks to Mike) to try to put it back in tight. Even after that, we can still easily notice the case is not perfectly fitted and it is hard to believe that it is a brand new unit. We chose CARE because of its good review for its service, after our experience with the installation, I would say that CARE might be good at service but not good on Installation. You may want to still consinder CARE for future service, its call center customer service has been polite and service man is nice, but for new HVAC installation, you may want to consinder other companies instead of CARE for installation. I noticed the response from CARE saying that the customer is not difficult to satisfy. Well, I cannot agree with that but I don't want to fall into endless dispute, so I uploaded a few photos showing what the installation is looking like. I want to emphysize that, even now, the A/C indoor case is still not air tight, I can easily feel the air blowing out from the gap. I am so frustratted that, for such a big investment, the project is still long way from perfection, nevertheless to say, their claiming 100% satisfaction.
Description of Work: We need to replace existing HVAC with a new system, the proposition from CARE matches our house need and budget than the qutoes from other companies. The installation project on 7/8 started at 8:30am and completed about 12:45pm. It was nice that the installer, as customer requested, lifed up the A/C outside unit about 6-7inch height, the there is cool air in the house during this hot summer, but the project has left some area not perfect: 1. there were a few fins bent and two major dents on fins on the brand new Lennox A/C outside unit, 2. The umbrella brought by Installer damaged our windows screen with two holes, 3. One screwer on the outside A/C was totally loose, 4. The A/C inner case was not tightly closed. 5. We were told that the products are made in USA but we found the A/C outside unit actually assembled in Mexico, 6. We were told that all installers are NATE certified technicans, but then did not present any NATE logo. 7. Three duct hanglers were forgot to put back on and one hangler was simply cut off by installer.

Response from CARE Heating & Cooling Inc
It is difficult to respond to a review such as this when the member omits so much and bends the facts to his point of view. I will try to address each item separately. “It was nice that the installer, as customer requested, lifed up the A/C outside unit about 6-7inch height,” We try hard to please every customer and this member is no exception. The installers, at the member’s request after the job had been started, placed his air conditioner on stands normally used to elevate a heat pump. Our normal charge for these stands is $45.00 but they were installed at no charge to the member. "1. there were a few fins bent and two major dents on fins on the brand new Lennox A/C outside unit" and "1. Lennox replied in the email that bent fins are pretty normal and "it is just very hard to not bend a few of them...they can get a fin comb and comb out the bent fins if needed." When the Lennox rep came on site, insited that no hurting on performace and the bent fins and dents on fins are normal because their products are cheap than others." The bent fins the member refers to are at the corners of the coil on the outdoor unit. They are behind the supports for the units top and occur during the manufacturing process when the coil is formed in a jig to make its 90 degree corners. The fins that are bent are on the outside radius of the corner where the tighter radius on the inside restricts any airflow. This means that these fins have little effect on heat transfer. If one was to inspect every air conditioner manufactured today they would see that every air conditioner produced has the same result on the corners, it is not unique to the member’s unit. To address the members concerns we had a representative from the manufacturer inspect the unit and he told the member this was normal and had no effect on the performance. The city HVAC inspector was also questioned by the member and he told him the same thing. At no time did anyone ever say this was because the product was “Cheap”, an outright falsehood. "2. The umbrella brought by Installer damaged our windows screen with two holes," and "2. For the damaged umbrella, they agree to reimburse after customer gets it repaired (thanks)" When the member brought this to our attention we promptly agreed to pay for the repair to his screen. All we asked for was a copy of the estimate or invoice. "3. One screwer on the outside A/C was totally loose," We removed and reinstalled over 100 screws on the members job. The one in question was one of four securing an access panel, was finger tight and was later tightened by our service manager. "4. The A/C inner case was not tightly closed." and "4. Because the A/C inner case was not fitted first time during installation, it took the service man more effor (thanks to Mike) to try to put it back in tight." This is a similar issue to the fins. The member did not like the way the indoor coil looked. When our representative and the manufacturer’s representative inspected the job it was pointed out to the member that there was no air leakage at all from the area of his concern. When the member pointed the same thing out to the city HVAC inspector he told the member the same thing. The installation PASSED the city inspection on the first visit; I have a copy of the report. There was no issue with the indoor coil. The only thing that was requested by the city inspector was to reinstall two duct hangers that were disconnected while installing the indoor coil. "5. We were told that the products are made in USA but we found the A/C outside unit actually assembled in Mexico" When our sales representative went on the initial sales call many options were discussed. The statement was made that most of Lennox’s products were still assembled in the USA. The furnace, evaporator coil and lineset we installed were assembled in the USA, but the air conditioner the member chose was not. It was not our intent to mislead the member, but we also are not normally asked where each component of a system is assembled. "6. We were told that all installers are NATE certified technicans, but then did not present any NATE logo." Our uniforms are consistent among all team members, only the company name and the technician’s names are displayed. The members overall grade is not consistent with the other grades given. While we try to satisfy every customer we have there is nothing we can do that will satisfy this member. Our commitment to customer satisfaction can be seen by reviewing our other reviews. He has been told by every expert that has looked at the job that everything was by the book, yet the member refuses to believe anyone. I am sorry he is not 100% happy, but as everyone has told him he got a first class installation with quality equipment. We do not deserve the overall grade he gave us.

Went fine. Serviceman told me what needed attention (filter change) and said I could get one (a little cheaper) at Home Depot or he could install. He called prior to arrival to confirm appointment. He reviewed a situation I had specific to this house and suggested possible solutions. No pressure though.

CARE Heating and Cooling was the runner up for the HVAC in my home. Kristy was professional, punctual, very detail oriented. Outstanding! She kept the side talk about sports, cars, families to a minimum. (Two other representatives were here who took up my time talking about many things other than HVAC. I guess this was there attempt at building a relationship. Is this their idea of how to woo a woman for their product?) She also gave me an estimate THAT day, rather than have me wait. She thoroughly explained the recommended size furnace and AC for my home, how she would run the ductwork outside the house, and how I can adjust the air flow to more evenly distribute AC or heat. She answered every question (I had lots!) to my satisfaction. I chose a competing company and their product because of a better payment plan and my concern about issues with Lennox. (Repair records and expensive replacement parts.)

I've used them twice and will always call them first based on those experiences. Pricing is reasonable ( I compared), and I trust them to tell it to me straight.
Description of Work: I've used Care a second time since my Thanksgiving emergency but can't recall the date. In both instances, Care was exceptionally responsive, even coaching me by phone and trying to help me avoid an "emergency" service when we woke up to no heat on Thanksgiving morning. In fact, I was able to make a minor adjustment to retore heat that Thursday, delaying the bigger fix to my thermostat until the next day.

They were great. Scheduling was open late, they scheduled the job quickly. They called me about an hour before my scheduled appointment time, saying they had a cancellation and was it ok if they arrived EARLY! Their tech was pleasant, neat, got right to work and finished the job quickly, all at a very fair price. He also gave me suggestions about what system parameters to look for in a new system, as mine is getting old. I can't say enough good things about them. A+ service!

They were prompt getting back to me when I called requesting a quote for a new water heater. When Mark came to the house I mentioned that perhaps I should get a new heater pump at the same time since the one I had was pretty old and he agreed (totally my idea - he did not try to sell me on it). Mark called me the same afternoon with the quote. The venting proved difficult so the owner was called. He came right over and helped his service guy solve the problem. They are very professional (carpet covers and booties) and were right on time. I would definitely recommend Care Heating. Largely due to their great Angie's rating I did not shop around - I knew they were going to be good.

My wife has been ill and hasn’t been home. I came home to a freezing house and a broken furnace with my wife due to come home the next day. Samantha got a guy over to the house that night. Devin came to the house at 8:30 and spent about 3 and half hours fixing the furnace and said he would stay until it was fixed. He got the job done and in an emergency situation. I can’t even describe how thankful I am to everyone who helped us.

The technician was very prompt and friendly. The main office was great with communication as to when he would arrive. We really appreciated the straight forward approach about the state of our furnace what to expect in the near future. There was no big sales pitch or push to replace it. He mentioned that there were a few parts that may need replacing in another year or so but not right away. He explained that the reason the unit likely went out overnight was simply due to a dirty filter that caused the unit to get hot and shut itself off. Will definitely have them out in the spring to check the AC and would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Furnace shut off overnight but we were able to get it back on. Had technician come out and check it anyway. Technician checked all of the components, cleaned and tested the unit. Recommended what parts may need replacing soon. Offered the company's Care Package which will include AC inspection in spring.

When I came home from work at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan 10, the temperature in the house was 60 even though it was supposed to be at 68. I called Care heating and Cooling right away. I was told that I would get the next call from their service person after the call he was currently on. Devin arrived at my house at 8:00. After checking parts of the system, he determined that the ignition control panel was not working and this was causing the furnace not to fire. I was concerned because my furnace is 23 years old but has always run well. Devin tapped on the panel a few times and it kicked in. The furnace started producing heat. However, Devin did not have a replacement panel and was not sure if one could be located. He said that I would be contacted the next day by the office. The office called me on Friday and they located a replacement ignition panel. An appointment was set up for today (Saturday) for replacement of the panel between 9:00a.m. and 12:00 noon. Devin arrived about 11:30 and replaced the ignition panel in less than 30 minutes. The furnace seems to be working fine.

This was the first year we had Care Heating and Cooling come out in the Fall and do a preventive maintenance on our ten year old furnace. We signed up for their annual maintenance plan. About six weeks after that our furnace went out suddenly. We called them and they came out the same day to diagnose the problem. The furnace ran after that, but they needed additional parts to ensure that it would continue to operate well. Those were put in the next day and there was no charge because we were enrolled in their plan.
Description of Work: Our furnace quit working and Care came out and fixed it for us. We were not charged because we had paid for their annual preventive maintenance plan in September of this year.

As 20 years of using Care Heating & Cooling religiously & faithfully, we recently had the major disappointment & shock of getting a non-essential furnace replacement part installed (at the technician's suggestion after a routine seasonal maintenance plan check-up that we have been paying for - for 10+ years)...and to my dismay, we were charged $498 for a 'dumb' (i.e. no moving parts) piece of PVC pipe held on by two clamps that the internet sells for $88.32 - check here:(http://www.comfortgurus.?). Even contacting MIke Weins - the owner - directly for a 'reasonableness check' netted pure apathy and, 'well, that's the book price" (i.e. it should be noted that this is 'the book' that Mike wrote...as the owner) and he offered us a 10% discount. So, $448 for a service call and a PVC pipe swap out for an $88 (retail cost) part that didn't impact heating or cooling (it had merely dripped slowly over a 12 year period causing some minor rust) and took 10 minutes to swap out? (The Tech was actually here for 45 minutes but, we talked Dallas Cowboy football for 30 minutes of that time). Wow. Unbelievable and very disappointing. Prior to this encounter I would've proudly said that Mike & Care H & CD were some of the 'good guys' remaining but, it seems they've gone the way of so many businesses trying to up-sell and gouge customers (Ala the car dealership mechanic) for the sake of revenue and margin maximization. I could've understood 3x the part cost ($250 for such a repair) but, 4-5x for a discretionary part? Care H&C may very well still be the best locally but, my advice is to proceed with caution...do your homework (ask for a part # and Google it) first before committing to any 'suggestive replacement part' work. Granted if your heating/cooling is down & out you may not have that luxury but, for me...I am $350 lighter in the wallet because I didn't understand what we were fixing....in advance and didn't do my homework.
Description of Work: We recently had a follow-up visit to have a Lennox furnace replacement part installed (at the technician's suggestion after our outine seasonal maintenance plan check-up). Specifically, the technician was replacing a PVC pipe called a 'Trap-Flue' that had developed a slow leak of moisture over a 12-year period...causing some minor rust inside the furnace cabinet.

Response from CARE Heating & Cooling Inc
The member posted this review on Dec. 28, 2012. Yet he hired us to install his new air conditioner on July 15, 2013. I guess our prices and service are not that bad after all!

Devin arrived within the specified timeframe of 1-4pm today. He explained the repair scenario reasonably well, but did give a bit of a hard sell on their "care" program (recurring maintenance). We are satisfied and will consider them for future repairs.ne of
Description of Work: One of our furnace units was not working at all. It ended up needing a pressure switch, and he said the motor is going bad. We only replaced the pressure switch at this time.

I called Care Heating and Cooling early one Sunday Morning. I explained that my heat was not working. I received a call from a scheduler who wanted to know if the next day was fine to come out. They called me 30 minutes before arrival so that I could leave wor to meet them at the property. The technician was at my house as soon as I arrived there. Within 5 minutes, he discovered the problem. He showed me the part that needed to be replaced. He even checked the thermostat and replaced the battery. He told me that it should be replaced when I change the batteries for the smoke detectors which I did not know. He took the time to make sure that all functions were working properly. He represented the company just as I had heard from the ads on the radio. They fixed the problem and did not try to sell me extra things. The price was less than another company I had called quoted for their service call! Care Heating and Cooling is at the top of my list and I will tell others about the great cost savings and service.
Description of Work: Care Heating and cooling replaced a part in my furnace that caused my heat to not work in my house.
