CARE Heating & Cooling Inc

Heating and Air Conditioning, Appliance Repair, Plumbing,

About us

If you are familiar with any of our advertising you know that these words are at the end of each and every one of our ads. But these eight words are more than just a slogan at CARE Heating and Cooling. They are our motto and the basis of our business philosophy, and the way we want to be remembered by you at the end of the day. From the beginning I wanted CARE be a different kind of company. After spending many years working for other heating and cooling companies, I became alarmed by the trends I was seeing in the residential heating and cooling industry. “Increase sales”, “raise your prices” and “make every employee a sales person” became the operating statements of many companies, leading to the biggest fraud of all: paying service technicians to sell replacement furnaces and air conditioners. In the 1980s a major manufacturer began to promote to its dealers a unique sales technique – have service technicians sell replacements. The rationale was that a service technician had the inherent trust of the consumer. If a repair was needed a service technician had ability to take advantage of that trust and offer to install a replacement system. This provided an immediate solution to an immediate problem that would lock out any competition, result in a much higher than normal selling price and much higher profits. Because companies make more money, a lot more in fact, selling you a new system rather than fixing the one you own this approach was widely adopted over the next couple of decades. To generate even more sales and profits many companies today apply a lot of pressure to service technicians to sell even more. Several local companies’ guidelines state specifically that a consumer is to be advised to replace their furnace if a repair, even a minor one, is needed whenever a furnace or air conditioner is over 10 years old. They set goals for their service technicians to turn at least 1 in 10 service calls into sales leads and pay them a commission when a unit is sold. Service technicians can also get caught up in the quest for more money, with some diagnosing problems that may not actually exist just to earn a commission. This is how “cat toys in furnaces” and “chipmunks with attitudes and power drills” became major problems. So what makes CARE Heating and Cooling different? It is my philosophy that we are in business not only to get new customers, but more importantly to keep them. Never will anyone in the service department profit by recommending to a consumer to replace their furnace or air conditioner. Not only do we offer free second opinions for a diagnosis of a bad compressor or heat exchanger, we will often second opinion ourselves when condemning equipment to be sure we have not made a mistake. If a mistake is made, it will be an honest one and we will stand behind everything we do. Lastly, you can trust us to offer you the lowest possible price on all services and installations we do. We are, and always will be, the best value in town. Thank you for considering CARE Heating and Cooling. Let us prove to you why you should call us “When you need a company you can trust.” Call CARE for the best possible service in central Ohio. I purchased a high efficiency furnace and a new AC from Care Heating and Cooling which they installed in my house in 2010. Previously I had used Care Heating and Cooling to perform the annual check on my old furnace and AC, and I had always been satisfied with the company. At the time of the furnace installation I was happy with the work. The work was completed promptly, the crew was courteous, and I was thrilled to have improved the energy efficiency of my home. The only thing that surprised me was when the Worthington City Code Enforcement officer who came to take a look at the work mentioned we needed to keep the door to the furnace room open. I was surprised because I thought energy efficient furnaces could be kept in smaller spaces that traditional furnaces, but I assumed that I had misunderstood the Code Enforcement officer's directive. More about this later? Fast forward to 2013, and I was ready to tackle some more work to improve the energy efficiency of my small house. I decided to participate in the Columbia Gas Performance Solutions programs which provides a low cost energy audit ($50 at the time), and which helps pay the cost for insulation work for qualifying homes. After a very thorough 4 hour evaluation I was shocked when the analyst explained one of the report?s recommendations which read "Talk to an HVAC specialist about converting your furnace to a two-pipe sealed-combustion venting. This will boost the efficiency about 5%." What? We had a 3 year old energy efficient furnace that was installed in a manner that lowered the efficiency of the furnace by up to 5%? I paid for a 95% energy efficient furnace that would never be able to reach that efficiency because of the way it was installed??? I decided I needed to research this further so I called the company that manufactured my furnace (Lennox) and spoke to a technical support specialist there, and the recommendation from the energy audit was confirmed: my furnace was installed in a manner that makes it less energy efficient (as a one pipe vs. a 2 pipe system). The one pipe system is less efficient because it pulls the air for combustion from the room it is in. The loss of air generates a negative pressure, essentially creating a mild vacuum condition that then pulls air into the space. In a drafty old house like mine, this air can be pulled through the cracks in the walls, pulling outside air into the home. Well that doesn?t sound like a very energy efficient, and it isn?t. A 2 pipe system (also known as direct vent) avoids these problems, and it is the most common way of installing high efficiency furnaces. This was confirmed by my calls to other companies and through online research. I also discovered that for my furnace to be installed as a one-pipe system there needs to at least 50 cubic feet of air available to the furnace to insure safety. The room my furnace is installed in is a small room which we also use for storage. This room was used as storage at the time of the installation of the furnace too and the room was had a door from the time we moved into the house. The 50 cubic feet of air is not available in that room. That is why the Worthington Building Code Enforcement officers told me I needed to keep the door open, now I understand. I have a furnace room with a door I can?t close since according to the manufacturer ?Insufficient combustions air can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness and asphyxiation. It will also cause excess water in the heat exchanger resulting in rusting and premature heat exchanger failure.? None of those things are good and again the 2 pipe installation eliminates these problems. I also added insulation and sealed the top portion of the basement wall in 2013 as part of our effort to improve the energy efficiency of my home, which reduces the amount of air available. Why would I pay more for a 95% efficient furnace and throw away part of its efficiency? Why would a furnace be installed this way in a room with a door that would provide insufficient air? I did more research, I called other companies and I asked lots of questions. This is what I learned: sometimes energy efficient furnaces are installed as single pipe systems because the installation makes a two pipe installation impossible or far too complicated. For some people the cost of the complicated installation kills the additional 2%-5% efficiency gain in the 2 pipe sealed combustion system. But that was not the case in my house. My furnace is located about 2 ft. away from an exterior wall. There is adequate space between floor joists for the necessary pipes. My house has vinyl siding, there would have been nothing tricky adding a second pipe for the combustion air (this was confirmed by a couple technicians who have looked at my furnace). Why was my furnace installed this way? Some companies guessed it was a way for Care Heating and Cooling to save a few dollars on the installation (they used a few feet less of the pipe). Another possibility is that the people who installed or who prescribed the work were just ignorant on the best methods for installing the furnace. Neither theory made me feel reassured about the furnace installation. I feel a mistake was made that needs to be corrected. I purchased a high efficiency furnace and I trusted Care Heating and Cooling to install the furnace so that it in fact could function as a 95% efficiency furnace. That sounds reasonable, doesn?t it? I could have purchased a less efficient furnace and paid less. Why would the furnace be installed so that it could not function at its highest efficiency? I believe that when mistakes happen, companies should have an opportunity to correct the work and respond. After completing my research in the fall of 2013 I called Care Heating and Cooling and had a conversation with the person who sold us our furnace. He agreed to come and take a look at the problem I was describing. And he came, and he appeared to be quite responsive, and he said he would get back to me with a solutions. And that was the last I heard from him. I then had to step away from dealing with this issue due to illness, and now about (August 2014) as I find myself (fortunately and gratefully) in better health I contacted Care Heating and Cooling again to see how they will address these issues. I was charged for a technician to come and look at the furnace (I was not told I would be charged, I had expected the technician to look at the furnace when doing the regular AC check-up). When the energy audit was done in 2013 I was told the maintenance provided by Care Heating and Cooling was good and my experiences with the maintenance program had always been positive, so I continued to use them for that mostly because I lacked the energy to find another company. This whole experience has made me angry and I feel like I need to find a new company for this as well. I am currently waiting to see how this will be resolved. At this time I cannot recommend that you purchase and high efficiency furnace from Care Heating and Cooling. I advise you to become familiar with the best installation practices by doing your research. I now know more than I ever wanted to know about this, but had I known this before the installation, all of this headache could have been avoided. Or just find a company that really understands the best practices. I trusted that the Care Heating and Cooling would install the furnace in a manner that would maximize the performance of the furnace, and they did not. Instead the furnace was installed so that it performs less efficiently, the single pipe installation is potentially more dangerous in the small space it was installed, and the installation also threatens to reduce the expected useful life of the furnace. Care Heating and Cooling only installed the furnace in a manner that was code compliant, (well, as long as I keep the furnace room open, if I close the door, it is no longer code compliant, oh but if I have the door open the moisture from the laundry room next door can enter the system and lead to ?rusting and premature heat exchanger failure?, Ugh!). After I reached out Care Heating and Cooling in 2013, they failed to follow-up with me, and my illness prevented me from following up with them. I hope this time around they will get back to me. At least at this time, I expect to be healthy enough to follow-up with them. Update: Two days after posting this review I was contacted by Dennis from Care Heating and Cooling and it was explained to me that typically customers are educated about installation options (when there are options available), cost (the two pipe installation costs $200 more), and the customer then makes a decision about how the furnace will be installed. That did not occur in my case, and it should have, and Dennis apologized for that . He assured me that Care Heating and Cooling did not feel the way my installation was handled to have been appropriate, and the failed follow up was again not something the company considers acceptable. The person who sold me the furnace and who failed to follow up with me is no longer working with the company (which is why my complaint had fallen through a crack). Dennis then offered to convert the one pipe installation to the two pipe installation at no cost to me. The work was completed yesterday by two knowledgeable and courteous technicians. I was very happy to see that when Care Heating and Cooling became aware of a problem, they researched the situation and shared their perspective, accepted responsibility, and then worked to make things right. I was very happy with the outcome, and I felt very happy about dealing with a company that displays integrity. I feel comfortable with continuing to do business with this company. if
Description of Work: Care Heating and Cooling sold and installed a 95% high efficiency furnace and a new AC in my home in 2010. This focused on the installation of the furnace as a one pipe system, instead of the more common 2 pipe (direct vent) system, which ironically reduces the efficiency of the furnace by 2-5%, raises safety concerns, and risks reducing the functional lifespan of the furnace. The cost listed for the project is for both the furnace and the AC. The ratings above focus on the installation of the furnace and the handling of the my concerns by Care Heating and Cooling.

Care did an awesome job all the way from the estimate to the clean up when they were finished. Christie was great to work with she answered any questions I had and even helped me file for all rebates (I felt other companies were not being truthful about amount of rebates due). The guys were great, they kept the work area neat, clean and were finished in 2 days. They did a fantastic job and also brought in extra help on day 2 to make sure it was finished since I had to work the next day and had nobody to be here for them. THANK YOU CARE!! I love my new system!

Craig was very punctual and professional. He answered all our questions. He noticed a few things that may cause problems in the future but are very expensive to repair. since the system is 10 yrs. old and is probably just a few yrs away from replacing, he did not recommend doing the work at this time since the system is working fine. He said he recommended waiting till it quit working and spend the money on a new system at that time as opposed to an expensive repair that would not buy much extra time. I appreciate that. He could have tried to "scare' into paying a lot now, knowing it really wasn't necessary at this time, instead he recommended we wait. It is hard to find service like that these days. I will recommend them to anyone who needs their service.

One person comes out to do the work and it usually only takes them about a half hour. They are trustworthy and their work people are very professtional in their apperance and their work. They have a good reputaion around town. We usually have call to get the service and it would be nice it they would be nice if they would call and remind us I think they used to do this but the last couple of times we have had to call.

I called on Monday to have my AC unit serviced, it was not cooling like it should. I was surprised to see they had hours outside the typical 9-5. They gave me the window of 6pm - 9pm that same day, which was perfect for me so I didn't have to take off work. The technician, Nathan, showed up around 8:30 ran some tests, cleaned the AC coils, and let me know my options since I have a leak in my system. He was very thorough in his explanations and his recommendations. I decided to do a refill of refrigerant to see how bad the leak is and hope for the best. Was very happy with service and their availability!

The tech, Brian, was very nice. He took his time and did a great job cleaning out outside AC unit off. He refilled the outside unit, and then he checked the inside unit to make sure the air was cooling well enough. It didn't take long, and it was much less expensive than I'd feared it would be. The only reason I said that the responsiveness was a "C" was because it took two weeks from the day I called to get a tech out to see us. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We were not aware that the words "same day" were present in our Angie's List print ad and have contacted Angie's List to request that they be removed to avoid any confusion or frustration moving forward. We make our very best effort to provide service to our customers as soon as possible. Same day appointments are typically available, but during peak times we run out of capacity for same day appointments at a certain point. Currently we are experiencing very high demand and for customers who do not have a CARE Plan, which offers the benefit of priority scheduling, wait times for service appointments have been longer than usual. Please accept our apologies. We do hope that you will consider our company in the future. Kind regards, Mike Wiens, President, CARE Heating and Cooling

I had a great experience with Care Heating and Cooling. It was easy to schedule and appointment to speak with someone and the salesman Wade arrived right on time. He quickly examined my current system and provided me with several options at several different price points. I never felt pressured. The purchase process went smoothly. On the day of the installation, three installers came to my home. Again, as with the salesman, they were very punctual. The men were very careful in my home. They explained everything they needed to do and began. They worked hard all day tearing out my old system and installing the new one. Unfortunately, the heat pump came with a factory defect (beyond CARE's control) and would not perform. However, this minor set back was quickly corrected by CARE. They sent an installer to my home with a new unit immediately the following day. I was very pleased with CARE and will definitely use them again. Thank You Ed, Angelo, Todd, and Andy. You guys were great!!

The service technician was very knowledgeable, fixed the problem, ran a check on the system and provided information on how to prevent a future re-occurrence of the problem. The Care Heating and Cooling Inc. office provided notice of the possibility of our service appointment being moved to an earlier date and the service technician did call in advance and was on time. Even though our system was almost as old as the service technician(25 years) he was knowledgeable and made no effort to sell us a new system or services that we didn't need. The service call was productive, informational and the cost was very reasonable for the services provided and the system was working fine when the work was completed.

The repair went well for the most part. The blower motor went bad on the furnace and needed replaced. After a good deal of time trying to separate the blower wheel from the blower motor, the technician was unable to do that so the blower wheel needed to be replaced too. The original repair was to cost $406.21 and the blower wheel added $181.80 to the bill. Luckily, we have a service plan with CARE and received a discount or the repair would have been more expensive. We use CARE in a regular basis and will continue to use them in the future.

We got quotes from several companies, but when CARE came to our house we knew they were the company were we going to go with. They clearly explained what we needed, why we needed the system they suggested and ask many questions about our needs. We ended up going with a Lennox system and in the end felt like we got a quality product at a fair price. The installation was smooth and uneventful (which is good!!). We have had them out for a small hiccup but they were very responsive and helpful. I would HIGHLY recommend CARE if you need a new A/C and furnace.

Quote process with Christie was painless, quick and thorough. She knows her stuff. Installation was scheduled two days after I made the buy decision. Angelo and Ed were on time, worked about 12 hours straight to get the job done in one day, cleaned up (better than the way it was at start), explained everything well, and were pleasant to be around. Unfortunately for them, I was home sick and pestered them with questions all day. I have used Care for several years to maintain my units, and have always been pleased. I switched to them after getting screwed in the middle of a Saturday night in February by another company I won't mention here. Because of my experience with them, and after a little online research regarding pricing, I trusted them enough to go with their one quote.
