If you are familiar with any of our advertising you know that these words are at the end of each and every one of our ads. But these eight words are more than just a slogan at CARE Heating and Cooling. They are our motto and the basis of our business philosophy, and the way we want to be remembered by you at the end of the day. From the beginning I wanted CARE be a different kind of company. After spending many years working for other heating and cooling companies, I became alarmed by the trends I was seeing in the residential heating and cooling industry. “Increase sales”, “raise your prices” and “make every employee a sales person” became the operating statements of many companies, leading to the biggest fraud of all: paying service technicians to sell replacement furnaces and air conditioners. In the 1980s a major manufacturer began to promote to its dealers a unique sales technique – have service technicians sell replacements. The rationale was that a service technician had the inherent trust of the consumer. If a repair was needed a service technician had ability to take advantage of that trust and offer to install a replacement system. This provided an immediate solution to an immediate problem that would lock out any competition, result in a much higher than normal selling price and much higher profits. Because companies make more money, a lot more in fact, selling you a new system rather than fixing the one you own this approach was widely adopted over the next couple of decades. To generate even more sales and profits many companies today apply a lot of pressure to service technicians to sell even more. Several local companies’ guidelines state specifically that a consumer is to be advised to replace their furnace if a repair, even a minor one, is needed whenever a furnace or air conditioner is over 10 years old. They set goals for their service technicians to turn at least 1 in 10 service calls into sales leads and pay them a commission when a unit is sold. Service technicians can also get caught up in the quest for more money, with some diagnosing problems that may not actually exist just to earn a commission. This is how “cat toys in furnaces” and “chipmunks with attitudes and power drills” became major problems. So what makes CARE Heating and Cooling different? It is my philosophy that we are in business not only to get new customers, but more importantly to keep them. Never will anyone in the service department profit by recommending to a consumer to replace their furnace or air conditioner. Not only do we offer free second opinions for a diagnosis of a bad compressor or heat exchanger, we will often second opinion ourselves when condemning equipment to be sure we have not made a mistake. If a mistake is made, it will be an honest one and we will stand behind everything we do. Lastly, you can trust us to offer you the lowest possible price on all services and installations we do. We are, and always will be, the best value in town. Thank you for considering CARE Heating and Cooling. Let us prove to you why you should call us “When you need a company you can trust.” Call CARE for the best possible service in central Ohio. We thought our relationship with Care Heating & Cooling was good despite the fact we had a furnace that ran loud and uncontrollable dust. We followed every recommendation for changing filters and paid for regular cleanings/tune-ups on our system for several years. We were told that our furnace was just "loud running" because it was not a good system. When the furnace started making a clanging noise, we were told we needed to replace our furnace. (It was relatively new and quite expensive when installed by our builder in 2005). We decided to shop around for such a major purchase and in the process learned from one of the companies we contacted that there was a ridiculous amount of building materials thrown into our furnace, ducts and trunks. The company who told us this removed this debris and repaired our furnace saving us thousands of dollars. It's obvious that Care was either not performing the maintenance cleanings to discover and correct this problem or knowingly ignored it so they could try to sell us a new and unnecessary furnace system. RE: CARE statement on 11/14/2014: "The accusation that CARE knew about this problem but ignored in an effort to sell the member a replacement furnace is simply untrue." I take that as their admission that their technicians didn't actually do any of the tune ups because if they had your technicians would have discovered this problem with the debris and clean it out! I agree it would have been much better to have had that information from CARE years earlier to have been able to make a complaint to the builder who installed our system during the warranty period in addition to not have breathing in all the dust! The debris that was found was causing the noise in the motor and was able to be easily located by our current HVAC service company (who also uses a camera during their cleanings or to investigate what might be causing a loud noise). It's obvious CARE's technicians don't take the same amount of time or "care" with their tune-ups. We made the right choice in switching.

Response from CARE Heating & Cooling Inc
After receiving this member’s comments, we reviewed our records and found that from April 2011 to February 2013 we performed a total of six service appointments for the member. These appointments consisted of two furnace tune ups, one air conditioner tune up, two service calls to diagnose and then repair a faulty pressure switch, and one service call to diagnose a defective control board. None of our records show that we ever told the member they needed to replace their furnace. Also, there is no documentation on our service work orders that our technicians observed or the member had complained of any dust or noise issues. It is possible that the member mentioned these issues to our technicians in passing, but if the issues were as significant as the member claims we would have investigated them, documented the problems, and presented the member with options to fix them. An annual tune up is recommended for a home’s furnace and air conditioner to ensure the units are operating safely, efficiently, and to increase their reliability. However, there is no maintenance or upkeep of any kind necessary for a ductwork system. As such, we had no reason to perform an inspection of the interior of the member’s ductwork. The presence of building materials inside the ductwork system is abnormal and reflective of very poor workmanship on the part of the company that installed the HVAC system in the member’s home when it was built. The accusation that CARE knew about this problem but ignored in an effort to sell the member a replacement furnace is simply untrue. Unlike many of our competitors in Central Ohio, we do not incentivize our service technicians to sell replacement furnaces or air conditioners. Our technicians would have no reason to ignore this or any any other issue in an effort to sell a new furnace. Also, as stated previously, we have no documentation that we ever recommended the member replace their furnace. We are glad that the member has had their issue resolved. However, in this situation we think that the member should direct their comments to the company that originally installed their ductwork system.

I recently went through the process of replacing my old and worn out furnace and A/C units. Our old units were about 25 years old and running much lower than their original 80% efficiency. My wife was also tired of having to kick the furnace to get it to come on like she did a few times last winter. We took the opportunity to upgrade to a higher efficiency options. CARE was the first and lowest quote that we received out of four. They were very patient while I continued to research and obtain further quotes. They also happily answered lots of additional questions I had after meeting with other competitors. I didn't feel terribly pressured, and they allowed me to take whatever time I needed. We ended up choosing CARE not only because of the price but they offer name recognizable Lennox products. We ended up going with a high efficiency two stage furnace with a variable fan and an accompanying A/C unit. With the savings CARE offered we were able to upgrade the filter unit and go with an indoor air quality system. This gave us better filters and UV lights. We're already noticing the difference in the house from having added it. One of the things that kept coming up in our consultations was the idea of leaving the fan blower on 24/7. With my existing system, I couldn't even imagine that. When the blower turned on, it sounded like an airplane preparing for take off and drowned out all the other sounds in the house. Now the new unit runs and you can't even tell, even when it's running at the higher stage. It's amazing. The system was installed a couple weeks after having ordered it. CARE wanted to come earlier than that, but I made them wait to accommodate my schedule. They arrived right on time and had the work done in a single day. I was pretty nosy and watched over their shoulders most of the day to see what was going on, and they didn't complain about it at all. The installers were all very nice and professional and took plenty of care coming in and out of the house and especially while installing the new thermostat upstairs. I would not hesitate to recommend CARE to anybody else that needed service or was looking to replace an existing system.

I have purchaced two furnace and AC systems plus had several service calls. they've alway did a great job. but on the last service call I though I paid at the time of service. The credit card did not get processed. They called me once but never mailed a bill. I forgot about it. Then about a month later called them for another repair. They informed me that I was on a do not service list. Even after the bill was paid they would not take.me off the naughty list. I really believe it is because it is not in a part of town they like to do repairs in ZIP CODE 43223. They like doing imstalls bit not repairs??? They were arrogant amd would be mot give me a reason for being on the no serve list nor let me talk to a mamager. A employee told me it was likely I was just in an area they did not like to serve

CARE has a defined service area which can be found on our website, www.careheatingandcooling.com. We like doing repairs and installations for any home that is within our service area! This includes zip code 43223, Columbus, and all of Franklin County. CARE made a decision to no longer provide service to this member for several reasons. The unpaid bill the member references was one of the issues that contributed to this decision. There were several other issues of greater significance, but we would rather not go into any detail about them in this public forum. The member called our office several days ago and spoke with a manger who explained our decision to him. It will always be one of our top priorities to have lasting relationships with customers built on mutual trust and respect. We regret that we were forced to end our relationship with this member.

Our service tech, Ben, was excellent. He arrived on time, was very competent, and explained what he was doing and why. He was in his van, ready to leave, and saw my husband trying to get a couple of large boxes inside our house from the front porch. Ben offered to help him. Very impressive!

When our service technician inspected your furnace, he found that the gas valve was malfunctioning and needed to be replaced. Upon further inspection, our technician also found that the burners and heat exchanger in the furnace were extremely rusted. Using a specialized camera, our technician took a closer look and found several cracks in the heat exchanger. These cracks pose a health and safety issue as they can allow the byproducts of combustion, including carbon monoxide, to enter the air inside your house. A cracked heat exchanger cannot be repaired. The options to remedy a cracked heat exchanger would either be to replace the heat exchanger or replace the furnace. Our technician recommended a new furnace because the cost to replace the heat exchanger, gas valve, and remedy the rusted burners would not be cost effective given the alternative of replacing the unit, especially as your current furnace is approximately 25 years old. If there was a temporary fix to get the unit up and running that was safe we would have provided it. At CARE, our technicians are not compensated for selling replacement furnaces. We provided the recommendation to replace your unit as it was the best option in this situation.

When I called for service I was given a timeframe of 12-5pm. I asked that the tech give me a call when they were on their way so I didn?t have to sit at home the entire time. I did get a call as requested and Mike from Care heating & Cooling arrived shortly thereafter. He was polite/friendly and quickly diagnosed the problem which was a bad thermostat. Eventhough my furnance is getting pretty old, he didn?t try to sell me anything I didn?t actually need which is one of my biggest complaints when it comes to service companies. He showed me a few different thermostats he had available with him and within 20 minutes the furnace was fixed. I will certainly use Care Heating & Cooling again.
Description of Work: They replaced the thermostat, checked the furnace for carbon monoxide issues, and also checked it for efficiency.

This mix-up is totally my fault. I thought the service was for a heating system tune-up. It was for a service diagnostic, which is a service to find a solution for a particular problem. I called Care Heating & Cooling to schedule an appointment. They explained to me the difference. I did make an appointment with them for a tune-up. They were unable to give me a refund because I purchased the service through Angie's List. Angie's List did provide a refund to me.

Care wanted to schedule the service sooner than I was prepared to deal with it! Usually it is the other way around! But, they did schedule the appointment for the day that I requested. The technician was great! He needed to replace the thermocouple unit on the furnace. It was a challenge because I have an old converted coal to gas furnace. He had to be quite the contortionist to get into the "guts" of the furnace to get the part replaced. But he was patient and inventive! He got the job done! I felt that the price of the visit was fair and the repair done rather quickly, all things considered! I didn't particularly care for the information he left taped to my furnace about how I should get a new furnace due to some terrible readings on my current furnace. I'm not sure that I'd ever receive any return on my investment in a new furnace installation with new ductwork plus new venting would have to be done to the house which I don't care for. My neighbor has the new venting for her furnace and it looks tacky and terrible with some protruding PVC pipes on the side of her house but is necessary for the new high efficiency furnaces, I understand. I really didn't want to have that discussion at all but we had it. If we leave out the discussion on a new furnace, I would say that the technician did his job very well! I was pleased with his work and now that my furnace is running in the cooler weather, I am quite pleased! Things are running smoothly at the moment! UPDATE: On October 30, 2014, I received a letter from Care offering a tune-up of my furnace. I called immediately to see why I got that letter when I had requested the tune-up with the pilot light repair on the initial call. The person who answered the phone said that there some notes on my account that she didn't understand. So, she arranged for someone to call me on Friday, October 31st. On Friday, I spoke with Mary Ann twice. It turns out that I need a fan switch, that the tune-up of the furnace was never done on his visit because the fan switch needed to be replaced. While the technician was here, he did not advise me of that the tune-up could not be done but spent most of his time after the repair talking about the need for a new furnace, even posting a little computer print-out on the furnace about readings that he supposedly took. It now turns out that the technician, who did not give me a printed receipt when he left but said that he would mail it, took great pains to document information for Care that he did not convey to me while he was here. So, we have ended up at a stalemate. Care is requesting an additional $300 plus dollars for the fan switch; at this point, I do not know if the tune-up would be included in that estimate. It seems that, since the repairman documented the situation so well on the Care side, there is no room for discussing the situation as I remember it. And, I truly don't remember a discussion about a fan switch plus the fact that a tune-up could not be completed. I have advised them that I will be getting estimates from other companies for the rest of the work that now needs to be done. One gets the impression from their advertising that this type of situation will be avoided with their technicians: no "selling" of a new furnace, just attention to repairing the problem. I got a sales pitch for a new furnace from the technician with no attention to the current problem facing me and no explanation of why the technician didn't do what I specifically requested on my initial call, fix the pilot light problem AND get a tune up of the furnace for the upcoming heating season. I was blind-sided by the need for a fan switch until I received the letter advertising a special for a tune-up...which I thought had already been done on this service call.
Description of Work: When Columbia Gas turned off my natural gas service due to inside and outside leaks, then tried to light the pilot light to my furnace once natural gas was restored to the house, the furnace pilot apparatus didn't work. They advised me that I needed to call a furnace company for repairs. Care came out to fix the problem and get the furnace pilot light working again plus do the yearly maintenance before the heating season began.

Everything went well from start to finish. We had several questions we needed answers to before we selected a company. I sent an email to Christie who responded promptly and honestly. She was able to schedule the work when I asked - in just two days. Shane, Angelo and Todd came out to do the installation. They arrived at the appointed time and introduced themselves, asked me what questions I had before they started and were very professional. Several times during the day, they consulted me on where to place pipes, the outside air conditioner unit, etc. After the installation they went over the new equipment and made sure I understood everything before they left. With the installation 2 service calls are included in the spring and fall to make sure the system is operating correctly; that is reassurance. I would absolutely hire CARE again and would recommend to friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: CARE sent a sales rep out to our home on a Saturday morning to provide an estimate for replacement of our heating air conditioning system.. It was the third estimate we had received. I called CARE because they were highly recommended on Angie's list and a colleague had been pleased with their work in the past. Christie was very knowledgable and responded to all of our questions. She was not pushy at all. We ended up selecting a high eff furnace and a 16 SEER AC.
