$15,000 later, chimney still leaked. Owner charged me $65 an hour to have his daughter stand there on her phone picking up falling mortar to make a color match. I gave him $200 to buy sealant for the outside of the chimney. He never returned. Heed my warning and do not hire.
Description of Work: Chimney leaked before they started work.

Estimate was given to 1) line the fireplace chimeny and cap the top; 2) clean the fireplace and 3)grind out and tuck point areas in the firebox, the outside of the chimeny, and areas around the homestead including resecurring a loose brick on the side of the house. Mike said he was a Master Mason so we hired him for all of this with an estimate of about 5000.. I couldn't find my estimate the day he alleged to he completed the job but questionned him as to why he didn't tuck point in the firebox. He told me it wasn't necessary or part of the quoted job. I discovered later there were loose bricks in the firebox & at the same time I discovered that the ash pit was not cleaned out when he completed the fireplace cleaning. When I contacted Mike, he told me that cleaning of an ash pit iis never part of the same job. To clean the ash pit would be another service at $25 per bag of ash removed from the ash pit which I declined to have done. 1 month later the chimeny cap blew off and when I contacted him to have the cap replaced, he said he'd be out but 2 weeks later WE reinstalled ouselves because a heavy rain was expected. While up on the ladder we noticed that there were areas Mike did not repair on the upper part of the chimeny. I called and emailed him multiple times over the passed 3 months. He still has not made an attempt to come back out to the house. Multiple excuses about not having a computer to answer his emails and changing his internet service. We are so frustrated with the whole ordeal, I have since decided to review the areas he did tuck point . The new grout is cracking and seperating allowing water seepage. The brick which was replaced is loose again. Overall the work is so very disapointing. As a new home owner I feel like we were taken advantage of. Mike impressed the fact that he was a Master Mason and came highly recommended by our realator. What a farce. My gut is telling me to have everything reinspected. My greatest fear is he may have also taken shortcuts when lining the fireplace which could lead to a fire. We have since stopped using the fireplace. He bad mouthed all the other very prominent fireplace repair companies in the area.........that should have been the warning sign. Lesson learned:/ I shouldn't have to worry about repairing repairs 4 months later.

Response from MASTERS OF LONDON CHIMNEY SWEEPS
I would like to respond to the shocking statements made by [member name removed] regarding the work performed at their home. My 1st meeting was with [member name removed] only, [member name removed] was not present. After going over what the house inspector did discover we agreed on what was to be done. ONLY THE JAMOR STRUCTUAL FLAWS ONLY!!! The whole house (brickwork) needed tucking. I told her that it is going to be costly for the whole repair and she said no due to the fact that the elderly homeowner was already very upset because he had a lot of his items stolen by some cleaning company so she did not want to make him any more upset than he was because he was close to cancelling the deal! I asked if [member name removed] needed to be here she said no that he wanted her to handle the whole thing due to him working a lot. I explained to her that the ground all around the home was pulling away from the footer and foundation (superseding) and that will cause a great deal of structural damage if not fixed. The whole ground must be dug up around the home, foundation re supported and stone and dirt brought back in. This would cost @ $18,000.00. The home is on a very busy Highway and the home was also on an area where the back of the home was over a slope going @ 20’ drop into a flood area and the home was sliding backwards which is causing all of the structural failures. She DID NOT WANT TO HEAR ANY OF THIS! I explained that a tuck job would only be a band aid and this work will someday have to be performed. My house as well had to be restructured at the foundation as well as my ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD!!! There was 1 large crack in the mortar joint at chest level on the back of the chimney that the inspector noticed. The inspector never went on the roof or saw the broken bricks at the top of the chimney! We talked, agreed and I left. Sent the estimate. Some weeks later, she calls; we meet and go over what SHE WANTED DONE! I asked again if [member name removed] needed to be here, she said NO. I get the down payment and we went to work. We performed the reline of the chimney, fixed the smoke chamber and the firebox. We performed the grinding and tuck pointing of the areas agreed upon. While tucking the chimney I discovered that the top bricks are broken up that the inspector didn’t find so I tore them apart, fixed them at no additional cost and continued the end of repairs. [member name removed] calls me and say’s I missed some cracks so I drove there, saw the areas in question and told him the Mrs. Did not want the small areas done. He said he did so, I did. He called again and requested some block work done also that was not asked by the Mrs. We came back again for the 3rd time and NO CHARGE. At this time I realized that he took his truck and pulled all of the shrubs away from the side of the house which caused some the areas we worked on to separate. I CLEARLY TOLD THEM NOT TO DO UNTIL THE SUMMER SO THE MORTAR WILL CURE!!! I performed all of the duties talked about, went back 2 more times and due to the fact that we talked to them about removing all of the brickwork from the home and installing rock face at a later date and a woodstove I feel they received more than they should have. I am a Master Chimney Sweep not a Master Mason, words she is now twisting around. It is impossible to grind a firebox, the dust would be everywhere plus I know of no one who would do that. We fixed the firebox where it posed a fire hazard. We fixed the separations in the smoke chamber. Cleaning the ash pit is a separate service as ALL Sweeps charge for this. The chimney cap did blow off during a 50-60 MPH day; every Sweep in the area was putting them back up. If you tighten the screws too much you will crack the clay so care must taken. There was snow and ice on the deck and I was not told that [member name removed] ever removed it so the Safety Concern was a factor and I agreed to reinstall when it was safe. I replied to both of [member name removed] emails and agreed to meet in the Spring to discuss what they feel should be done. The next call was from Angie’s Lists @ complaint! I have 10 emails from [member name removed], only 1 with a complaint! I would have made everything proper with these people had they taken the proper channels of respect. I DO NOT PLACE MY LIFE OR LIMB FOR ANYONE AND WILL NOT START WITH THESE TWO! We were to get together this Spring but these folks did not make any appointment with me like all of the other times we met and we would have worked through this. I will not negotiate for any monies due to the times we went back, the extra work completed and not charged for and the fact that rather than calling me to come out, they formed a complaint! I will however entertain the money for the extra work completed that the inspector did not tell them about! I AM SHOCKED AT THE WAY THESE PEOPLE HAVE BEHAVED! Respectfully Yours Michael D. Everything turned out fine. They did it quickly, they got here on time, and they did a good job. They owner, Michael Adkins, has been in the business for nearly 30 years. Their prices were very competitive, and were actually lower than the other estimates I received. I was very pleased with them and would consider using them again.
Description of Work: They did some major repair work to my chimney after a chimney fire.
