(Although this complaint is listed on my account, it is a direct report quoted from my mother. She was the customer in this case.) I was and still am extremely disappointed in the work done by Mr. Hartman. My steps are in worse shape now than they were before he supposedly repaired them. He used cheap concrete to fill all of the spaces between the loose stones. The concrete started loosening from the paces within six months and started falling out within a year of being applied. It continues to fall out to date. My children had the concrete checked to discover whether it was the appropriate product to use for the project. It was not. He took advantage of an elderly woman. Listed in chronological order are the appointments, transactions, and attempted contacts between myself and Mr. Hartman: MAY25, 2017 - Received an estimate from "Hartman Brick & Stone, 1015 Pine Valley Lane #102, Toledo, OH 43615, (419) 540-2100". JUNE 9, 2017 - Signed Contract for Services. MARCH 6, 2018 - called Mr. Hartman because the mortar had started to fall out of the areas he repaired in June. He did not return my call. MAY 10, 2018 - called Mr. Hartman because the mortar had continued to fall out of the areas he repaired in June. He did not return my call. MAY 31, 2018 - called Mr. Hartman. He said that he had been out of town at sister's home and would come and fix/repair steps. He never contacted me or came to my house to repair the steps. JUNE 2018 - called several times - No Answer. Left messages each time which were not returned. I paid a retainer of $500.00 and $1,100.00 upon completion of the work as stated in the contract. I have all of my documents associated with this project. Additionally, I have photos of the current condition of my the steps. NOTE: We attempted to upload a number of photos to show the condition of the steps. None of the photos would upload and they all have a "jpeg" extension.

Did work last year in August. Notice that concrete was coming out where he had supposedly fixed it. Made multiple phone calls to him beginning in March of this year. Those calls went unreturned for months. He only responded after threats to report him. He finally came by in June and told me he would make the repairs. As of today, July 18. I haven't heard back from him.

He did an excellent job. He explained the repairs he was planning to do to our walkway and how it would keep the the damage from happening again. I f there were any problems he told us to give him a call. I had total confidence in his skills and workmanship. Our questions were thoroughly answered. I feel much safer walking down our walkway now. What a pleasure to have a friendly and respectful person to work with and..... it's good to see our walkway back to beautiful.

THOM HARTMAN of Hartman Brick & Stone is the BEST!! He provided a great deal of information on: Cost, products (including area providers), time, best arrangements, what needed to be done before, during and after work was completed and lots and lots of patience for design and installation! We've had a few previous bad experiences with contractors, but having THOM HARTMAN do our patio project has been a wonderful experience! I will most definitely ask THOM to help with all our future improvements!!!!!

Was very professional. Did the major hole filling at no charge. Recommended that I get the porch leveled before proceeding with the rest of the tuck pointing. He could have charged me once for the work now and then again when it all cracked out after the porch was leveled. He didn't do that. Will definitely use him again to finish the tuck pointing. He even gave me the names of 2 different companies he trusts to do the leveling. A1!

They did an excellent job. The project came in costing less than the estimate, and the end result is very nice. They came two different times to "dig" and get the area prepped, and his communication was fantastic. We had one little area of concern, and when we talked to the contractor, he made it right without any question or extra charge. Very nice job and great contractor.
Description of Work: Graded our drive and put new stone down. Created extra parking area, too.
We met a few times before anything occurred. He came to property in Late summer and took measurements and looked at the 'lay of the land' and we talked about what we wanted done overall. About a week later he called back and gave me an estimate on what it would cost. The following spring we had him come back and firm up price as we wanted to move forward. He came out again, re-measured. re-estimated cost, etc. He gave me same price for labor, told me I would have to provide any new materials and gave me a few local suppliers to contact for the supplies. Said I didn't have to use them but he had worked with these suppliers and they knew him, etc. I went and got pricing for some new concrete blocks and they were purchased from one of his recommended suppliers. they were delivered within a few days and I had everything to get the job started. The stuff sat in my driveway for a week before he was able to come out and begin. In fairness, he ran into an issue with tearing down the existing wall and needed to call in a friend with a bobcat to rip out some sort of water barrier that was installed improperly. Once that was done (took about 2 weeks) he started building it up again. This was a much slower process than I was led to believe- he had originally told me it would be maybe a week total. It ended up taking almost a month. A lot of days he just did not show up for whatever reason. He would be out one day, skip a few days, then come out one day, skip a few more days, etc. If he would have been out every day to work on it he probably would have been done in a week as he estimated. He works by himself, this is a one-man operation and he has no heavy equipment, no truck and no other employees, so if there were ever any need to get supplies, or haul away debris, I needed to do that, which i did a few times. I had to order the new blocks, gravel and other landscaping material and have that delivered. I also had to pay another local landscaping service to come out and haul away the old landscaping debris that he had pulled out with the Bobcat as he had no way of hauling it away himself. So that tacked on another $200 or so to the overall cost. He DID have a friend with a truck that he used to initially come out and haul away the old landscape block though. the same guy came out with the bobcat later on in the project. After completion, i had a LOT of leftover materials- almost 25% of the original block I ordered were unused. Seems that the supplier mis-estimated the amount of block he would need. They ended up coming out and picking it up and giving me a refund though, so that was nice. The work itself was good quality. He did a great job and the wall is structurally sound and looks great. I had to call him back after a week or so as I found a few loose blocks on the top of the wall that had not been glued securely and he came out to fix those. He told me to call him again If i found others and he would come out when he could to adhere them since he carried that product around with him. I did find more that were loose but I called and never heard back from him, so i just went out and bought some of the adhesive and glued them myself. It wasn't that big of a deal, i was a bit surprised I didn't hear back though. I would use this guy again If I had SMALL projects. I almost think this project was a bit too big for him since he had no truck or equipment to haul or deliver heavy supplies and had to rely on a friend with a truck and equipment when needed.

Thom was very responsive and professional. I had a persistent water leak in my kitchen ceiling for 3 years. In my efforts to determine the source of the leak and stop it, I'd spent thousands of dollars and hired several roofers and contractors. Many repairs were made, but the leak persisted, Finally, I spoke to another roofer who said the problem could be porous brick or cracked mortar. He suggested I hire a masonry repairman. I found Thom Hartman on Angie's List. He had great reviews for service and reasonable pricing. All proved true. Thom quoted a very reasonable price to apply water repellant to the brick in the trouble area. He inspected the mortar at that corner of the house, and found a few places that needed repaired (including one spot I tried to DIY -- which he justifiably poked a little fun at me for). During his inspection, Thom actually identified the spot that I believed to be the source of the leak. Finally! He didn't charge me anything extra to repair the mortar in this area and I have not had a problem with water leaking since. After spending thousands of dollars, Thom fixed my problem with just a few hundred dollars of work. I couldn't be happier. I plan to hire him for another project involving leveling out the brick pavers on my back patio.

My Realtor reported that the work looked very good and she was pleased to meet Thom so that she could refer him to other property owners. When we walked around the property for the quote, I was convinced that Thom really knew his profession and would take care in completing the work properly. My Realtor's report validated my impression.
Description of Work: We contacted Thom to do tuck pointing service on the brick portions of our home which had been identified as mortar missing by a home inspection. Three places were identified. in the inspection report. Thom agreed to visit the property and give us a quote. When he arrived on a Saturday, he found a lot of small areas which the inspector had not noted. His quote for all of the service was about the same as a quote for only 3 spots by another mason who did not visit the property. He started the work and planned to return the next week to finish. It happened that we had another type of inspection at the house and they identified some cement areas along stairs which needed to be filled in to prevent water from getting into the house. I contacted Thom while he was at work and told him about the areas. I fully expected to be charged more, but he did the extra work and when I asked for the final invoice amount--he quoted the original number.
