Met with Cory Knotts (and his girlfriend) in my house 6/1/18. First item discussed was whether I had standing water. I answered no. Showed him rear, west basement wall. Pointed out concern of noticeable mildew and buckling. Cory asked me if wall was rebuilt. I answered yes. He added, "exterior wall was rebuilt?" Changed my answer to no; told him I thought he meant drywall. Showed him rest of basement including where paint was peeling on front west and east walls and Cory said pockets of water being held in wall. Orally estimated $5,800. I answered thank you and I'd continue to take other quotes and let him know. He then countered with $5,500. Received signed/written proposal 6/1. Agreed to $2,500 at start of project and $3,000 at finish, to begin 6/18. Asked him if I needed to do anything in preparation and he answered no, my basement was fine, they would move everything. Sent text 6/17 10:34PM saying couldn't start until 6/19. Figured that's life; things happen. Sent text 6/19 saying would arrive around 9; came past 9:30. Told him I'd hand key off and start check when he arrived and I did. Planned to return before they left (worked half day). They were already gone when I got home at 4:10PM. Found the (3) of them stacked everything in center of basement, starting by burying on top of cats' 3 litter boxes (really) and supplies. Had to move a lot of heavy stuff to get to them but said nothing, just placed litter boxes out again. Cory sent another text 11:39PM on Tuesday evening stating truck broke down on way home, leave key in mail box, he'll be there later in morning after truck fixed. Saw they taped key to inside of old milk chute so that's where I left it Wednesday AM before leaving for work. Wednesday, 7:48AM, another text from Cory asking if message received. Now stated he'd be there later today. I reiterated afternoon now instead of morning; he replied guys will be there shortly, he would be there late morning. No way to verify if that was the case. Cory states he will be done Friday, 6/22. On 6/21, 2:36 PM, Cory sends another text stating nothing but mold in drywall and floor. He stated we proposed to not cut drywall (that was never proposed written or otherwise; in fact, pointed out mold in drywall first). Adds needs cut out 24 inches from wall; really bad; extra work, $500. Called Cory; got VM; left message stating we needed to talk in person, not over text. Cory calls back approx. 1/2 hour later and asks if I'm coming home soon; I answer I will leave now. Arrive to discuss and tell him increase in cost not fair since I pointed out wall damage at start and was relying on his expertise in trade to fairly assess at start of project. He begins pointing out distance from wall with hand but when he stood up, he motioned to basement window ledge (out same distance) and said, "I should have caught it." I answer fair enough. He states he's not used to someone asking so many questions, that many would not even bother, would say "just lay pipe." I said no, I wanted mildew gone; that was why I requested service to begin with. Nothing was rewritten so I figured he'd back off on the pricing increase. Cory states still plans to finish on Friday, 6/22 but will work Saturday if needed. Cory sends text at 4:14PM on 6/22 stating will not finish today, will call if I'm not home when they leave. Stated only thing left would be "crete" and to call when free to talk. I texted when I was free at 5:57PM stating would be home in morning 6/23, but had to leave by 1PM. He replied via text at 6:32PM, "Ok. Will be there around 10. Have a job to bid first thing. He showed at 10:30AM and called me to basement at 1:45PM. Tells me concrete will remain wet for a while and will crack some as it settles. Everything that was stacked in center is still there so I inquire about assistance moving back. He says he may be able to come back next week sometime. I see floor panels covered in mildew he left stacked in the finished/rear room where he was working. I ask if he's taking those. He left those there; totally unsafe and heavy, too. Was still working in driveway when I went to leave at 2P. Told me balance due was $3,450 (took $50 off for AC window unit he bought from me). He requests to add changes to my copy of proposal. Told him to initial changes and that I was not happy and explained why: change in cost after written proposal, late daily, late notice in assessing issue with drywall and additional cost. He begins to get really loud as he yells that just because he's not at my house doesn't mean he's not working for me. Not sure what that means but I'm paying him so he's responsible for what goes on at my house; what he does after he leaves is his choice. I tell him to leave my house, he's not allowed to do these things and then yell at me inside my house. I asked for key and he tells me he left it at home on his dresser (???). Left empty cans, bottles, garbage. Broke paper towel holder, fan, and part of molding - never bothered to tell me, just let me find these things. Told me as I was leaving that the basement was "spotless." Told me to have a nice day and I had to tell him I thought his service was awful. Told him I would let the two folks who recommended him know how he treated me. Took pics of everything before I cleaned up later that day. Had to move everything back by myself. Received nasty texts as I was cleaning so I blocked him.
