Plus: Took down about 70 feet of board fence and hauled away. Got rid of the weeds that had grown between the board fence and the chain link fence. Sprayed to prevent future weed growth and said they will take care of any weeds that come back. Minus: I am very disappointed with the appearance of the surface of the driveway. The surface is stained with marks from their machines that look like mud or rust. They haven't washed away with the rains. Also there are many shoe prints on the surface that do not wash away with rain. These appeared the next morning, not weeks after completion of the asphalt. Also the several seams up close to the house are very visible. They could have done a much better job with the seams. These are not marks/stains that have appeared since they completed their work; they were there when the work was completed. They left several spots in the yard with dead grass. A shrub beside the driveway at the road is dying. They skimped on the asphalt on all sides of the driveway. They promised to put it exactly where I wanted it, but they didn't. They left space at the sides without asphalt, and it looks skimpy. I would rather have paid a little more and have had the entire gravel area covered. Before I signed the contract I asked if they would accept my Visa card in payment. They said yes. They said they did not have the machine at present but would have it by the time they were finished. Not until the afternoon they finished and asked for payment did they tell me they could not accept a credit card. I had asked ahead of time so I could plan to get 1% back, as well as not having to pay on it for up to a month. So it cost me money, and they should have told me ahead of time that they would not accept Visa as they had promised. When I complained they said they could not justify the expense. Well, neither could I. And they should have told me the truth when I asked ahead of time. In the beginning they dropped by on March 16 (with no prior notification) to scrape the drive. This was three days after I signed the contract. But it was almost six weeks then before they were able to asphalt the drive. So I had to put up with a lot of dust and mud during those six weeks. That could have been avoided. On June 1, just over one month after completion, I called Pennington to ask them to take care of the weeds that had come up through the asphalt in a few places. They (three people) came by and looked at the weeds on June 3, at which time I also complained about the way the surface looked when they had completed the job. They were clearly not happy at having been called to come back, and were barely nice. They did say they would come back that week and take care of the weeds. However they did not come back until I called them again on June 18, over two weeks later, at which time they did come back and sprayed and removed each weed. I do appreciate their taking care of the weeds that had grown through the asphalt. As for the marks left on the surface when they completed the job, they were not as willing to accept this as a problem. One of them suggested they could power wash them off, and he agreed some marks were left by the roller. Another said when the driveway had faded as much as the road has, the marks wouldn't show (should I have to wait 20 years?). He also yelled at me for parking my old van on the drive, although I wasn't complaining about the stain it had left. In any case they seem to be ignoring that complaint and offered no explanation and no resolution. Two years later the asphalt is still soft. There are indentations where I put flower pots along the side of the driveway. There are numerous big dents where my van sits on the driveway. A small cart containing mulch sat on the drive for about two weeks recently and left marks. Parts of the asphalt have crumbled at the sides. There is a big weed trying to push up through the asphalt. There are cracks down the middle. There are oily streaks all over the driveway. I don't think I could have gotten a worse job.
Description of Work: Applied asphalt to my gravel driveway. One year later I called Pennington Asphalt and learned that he is no longer in business. Maybe that's why they wouldn't take Visa. And so much for those verbal promises. The asphalt now has small cracks down the middle that probably should not be there.
