+ 0 moreThis was a pain from the very beginning. Unfortunately, we pre-paid for the service. We had a terrible time even getting someone to return our phone calls to schedule an appointment. Even when we actually reached a live person, Scott's wife, she said she would call us back and never did. After sending angry text messages, I finally got an appointment scheduled, took the day off work, only to receive a call from Scott right before the appointment time to cancel. While I understand this was due to the weather, I was very annoyed that no one called to reschedule as he promised that they would. After more text messages, we finally got our treatment. I was then informed that I would owe extra (and they asked for cash) because my house is larger than 3500 square feet and I wanted to treat for bees/wasps. Shame on me for not reading the fine print. A few days following the treatment, we had a dramatic increase in ants in the house (which may have just been a coincidence). I contacted Scott to come back out and scheduled a time for 6:00 PM. When 7:00 PM came and went, I contacted him to learn that he "completely forgot". To his credit, he did apologize and offer to come later that night, but I was not interested. Instead, I am going to find a company instead of an individual. I am disappointed that we did not have the positive experience that I read about in the reviews.
Description of Work: We purchased the seasonal treatment plan and had the exterior of the house treated for crawling insects and paid extra for "stinging insects"

+ -1 moreSo far, so good. He was able to locate an area where we had a gap in our siding and vegetation too close to the house where the mice were able to enter. Traps were set and 2 went off after the sealing. We did pay the extra charge to have him return to collect the traps but it was totally worth not having to see them ourselves! Hope we never have to use the service again-but would totally recommend to others! And would use for any other pest needs.

+ -1 moreI had a hard time contacting the business-but the owner did warn it was his busy season plus there was a death in the family. When we finally got it together and he came, he was very professional. He explained that the products they use are all natural, so my concerns for the cat were not a problem. I don't spend much time in the finished basement where we are most likely to have spiders, but my son and his wife have been. There was one honking big spider 2 or 3 weeks after he sprayed but that has been it. He did say i should buy a dehumidifier which helps a lot, and I forgot about that until just now. I'll be shopping for one now.

+ -1 morehe took his time and sprayed all around the house on the ground and around the windows and doors, anyplace an insect could gain entrance to the house. Defense will return two more times. We have always encountered ants inside the house in the Spring. There have been far fewer as the result of the spraying.

If you want to know the type of chemical and service, the owner Scott will take the time to explain what he used and special application for seasonal pests. This is a service provider who will get to know your needs and you will rebook next year for dependability. I think I got a good value for the price.

+ -1 moreHe has done a no show no call three times now. It has been over 5 and 6 weeks now since he was suppose to come and he has not come. He has not shown up on any of the three dates we have set up. The first time he said he did not have my phone number. The second time he said his mother in law died and he would call me in a few days and that has been over two weeks. He did say if it was raining he would come a few days later but it had not been raining. It is disappointing because I wanted to use him and the service. He was suppose to be three different applications for every other month. It is fine if you need to cancel but he never bothered to call.
Description of Work: I have not been able to use Dba Defense Pest Control.

+ -1 moreThis was my first experience with Defense Pest Control. Scott Mulcahy, the owner/ operator, appears to be a very knowledgeable pest control specialist. He offered several ways of dealing with the carpenter bee issue, including a green solution composed of ingredients such as pepperment oil, rosemary oil and the like. There was a sizeable carpenter bee population that had invaded the peak in the front of the house after I had the paint stripped and the wood stained, exposing and highlighting some beautiful scroll work and wood carvings. Scott applied the green solution generally to the peak and some foam directly into the nests. Within minutes after he was finished, we were witnessing positive results as several bees were dying right before our eyes. Within 24 hours, the population of the bees was virtually eliminated. The same is true for the bee that were inhabiting the beams on the patio. Scott provides a free follow up service call and application if it is needed, but at this point I am not sure one will be needed. Beyond his expertise, Scott is very a courteous and personable guy. He does his work efficiently and neatly. I highly recommend his services.
Description of Work: Eliminated carpenter bee nests in the peak above the front door of my house and in some patio beams at the rear of my house.

Description of Work: I purchased the Big Deal- seasonal pest control package (3 treatments). Scott had to reschedule the first treatment due to a family emergency. Rescheduling was professionally handled and I spoke with both Scott and his wife Sherry. Both were very nice. Scott arrived on time (if not early) and performed the work discussed over the phone - exterior treatment, as well as the wasp problem in the masonry in the front entry way. Scott completely sprayed the area, plugged some holes and I had our handyman seal the other ones the following day. Scott also found and sprayed the nest. We have not seen any more wasp in or near the front entry way. Thanks Scott for identifying and taking care of the problem before it got any worse. Scott phoned to let me know he had arrived at the house and what he had found (relative to the wasp problem). A written detailed description of the treatment performed was left in the mailbox.

He also explained that the material he uses is environmentally safe. Scott arrived on time and explained the reason we have ants is because of a large pine tree close to our house then also sprayed around the tree area to help alleviate the problem (at no extra charge). We scheduled his services for a summer and fall spraying. I recommended him to a co-worker and he sprayed at his home and he was very happy with the services of Scott and Defense Pest Control.

Description of Work: I used the "Big Deal" for the pest control services of Defense Pest Control. They basically took the honey bees and relocated them. It ended up costing more because they had to relocate it.

+ -1 moreAfter checking the ratings and reviews for this company, it made me feel comfortable about picking them to handle the problem. I am so freaked out by critters (mice, etc) that the one BIG selling point was the SAME DAY service in the positive review section. I talked with the owner who was very nice, professional and understanding of the situation. However, as mentioned, he needed to send a different employee to handle the flying squirrel problem. This employee was very knowledgeable also. However, the problem continued to be a problem for a very long time due to no return visits when they said they would return and with no contact in between....not even phone calls to let me know what was going on. A critter problem certainly warrants more conscientious follow thru than this.
Description of Work: Contacted the owner regarding a "critter" problem. After describing the situation, he felt the critter may be more than just a mouse issue and deferred service to another employee. The man showed up and assessed that I had a problem with "flying squirrels" as well as mice. He said the squirrel issue needed to be handled first and then when that was taken care of, we could go ahead and deal with the mice. The cost was $325 for the squirrel issue on top of the $139 angie list coupon I purchased for the rodent issue for a total of $464. On the first visit, he set traps and while still present, caught four (4)!!!! squirrels. He said he would return to make sure they were all caught which would entail several more visits as well as continuing to return to set traps and catch all the mice and seal the house for the entry points for both the squirrels and mice. The work began in January but now two months later, I am still waiting for the follow up service to be completed. He returned a couple times and more dates were set up for more follow-up visits to ensure that all the traps were empty and rodents caught. All of my cabinets continued to be emptied with most of the stuff staying on the floor/counter,etc. as I have been too afraid to go back in when the mice problem is still present. This did not make me too happy with two holiday dinners and family celebrations in between.

He then baited and set traps inside my house in strategic areas keeping in mind that I was worried about my cat coming into contact with a trap. All the while he was doing this work he was extremely courteous, polite, and helpful. I would highly recommend Scott Mulcahy and Defense Pest Control.

I left a message with Defense Pest Control and within 15 minutes received a call back and had the appointment scheduled. He came out as schedued, identified the issue and connected me with the most appropriate person to resolve the issue. We have not had a problem since.
Description of Work: Inspection of the site to determine the extent of the issue and worked with the specialist to eliminate the problem quickly and prevent further issues with support as needed if the problem reoccured.

Description of Work: Scott inspected our entire house and garage for mice that were occasionally getting into our fireplace insert. He found the problem with an air-conditioning pipe that needed to be resealed. He also sealed several other small holes and cracks as a preventative measure. He provided us with a bait trap for outside and other traps for the fireplace to make sure the problem was resolved.

The owner assessed our home, took the time to walk through how to combat our mice problem in the basement, set up baits and traps (even leaving us with extra) and gave us pointers for the future. When we asked him to take a look at the attic to assess it for us, he kindly did so and helped us there. Although it may take awhile to see the results, the fact that he sealed up the entry point and set the traps/baits means we'll shortly get rid of our problem. He was so personable and knowledgeable that we felt immediately at ease with him coming into our home and took his advice immediately, as, after a thorough review, he also recommended spraying for spiders in the basement, preventing bites. These types of problems are difficult to get recommendations from others for--I was very impressed and would recommend him wholeheartedly.
Description of Work: We bought the Angie's List Big Deal to help us prepare for the winter and let Marty know about some signs of mice in our basement. He sealed up the point they were coming in, addressed some attic activity and sprayed for spiders (additional service we asked for).

He had to take down part of a barn wall to remove and spray a massive Yellow Jacket nest, and then replaced the wall when finished. While he was working, I discovered other nests on the property and he removed and sprayed those as well. He was very professional and extremely prompt, as well as a personable guy. I will definitely keep his number for future problems!
