Richard came out very quickly to quote the job. The following day, he emailed me a professionally-prepared, written quote. His price was in the ballpark of other contractors who had quoted the same work. I had some unexpected issues which didn't allow me to get back to him until the following week - when I advised him of the delay in responding on my part, and that I would make a final choice sometime this week. His email response stated that he made numerous attempts to contact me and that he was withdrawing his quote. I responded to him, telling him "no worries", I only had one follow-up voicemail from him and no other attempts at contacting me, and thanking him for the courteousness of notifying me prior to me potentially selecting him to do our work and the start of our job. Richard responded back to me with "unfortunately, prices change so often in commodities that is isn't possible for us to keep our quotes open for lengthy periods". I responded that it was an odd response and reason , as the length of time was one week, his quote only included labor and material costs for drywall and finish of kitchen ceiling (12' x 13') and its associated supplies of $395 (whose "material" costs shouldn't have changed very much in one week), and cabinet pricing that was a straight percentage off of Crown's "List Price". All of the rest of the quote was for labor. His final response was; "No matter at this point. You have your numerous quotes. I'm sure things will go fine for you. Best wishes" In conclusion, I really don't know what the quality of his work may have been, but based upon my experience with subsequent interactions with him after providing me his quote, I wouldn't risk committing to him. His withdrawal of his written proposal, and subsequent "reasons" for withdrawal made no practical sense to me. In my opinion, a simple withdrawal of quoted proposal based upon either an error in quoting - which wasn't likely as his quote was in the ball park of other quotes - or withdrawal due to his unavailability due to other jobs would have been much more appropriate.
