We do appreciate the time this member takes to report on our work. A good working partnership is really a two-way street. This member is very specific about her requirements to keep her beautiful, and beloved property in great shape. She does care about "code" and quality, and is a great fit for our services! This member is a very valued client who can call us anytime...day or night...even for emergencies of any kind. We will be there!

There has to be an actual project specified in order to get any plan or pricing for work to be performed. This member had no idea what she wanted to do about her paneling that was water damaged. She was informed to contact us when she knew what her plans would involve. She did not know if she wanted to paint, refinish or remove the paneling. She also vaguely discussed some electrical work, but we still have no idea what she wanted to have done. There was no project to even quote, so we are not quite sure why this complaint was posted. This member can always call to set an appointment to review her plans, once she knows what they are.

Because the Spring and Fall months are the busiest time of year for our services, we always inform potential clients that there will be a waiting period before we can schedule certain types of projects. Plaster and painting projects do not qualify as emergency work. This member was informed that our schedule was very full, and that no firm time commitment could be given. He was welcome to call to check on our schedule at any time. It has only been a month since our initial contact from him. For projects such as his, we are currently six weeks out for scheduling. We are the best at what we do, so we do often have a waiting period for work that is not urgent. (The systems in a house are considered more of a priority for the safety of the home, and the homeowner....than the decorating. Since we do repair and replace all elements of the mechanical systems we do have to prioritize). We have never had a single bad rating on our actual work...the only negative ratings we have ever gotten are from members who do not like to wait, or need very precise scheduling. We are very flexible and work all hours to accomodate our clients needs, but the nature of our work and our attention to detail means sometimes there will be some waiting.

In response, we would comment that this member contacted us over two years ago. An initial meeting to review this project revealed a very large and costly renovation was desired. The member's budget was not in any way close to even covering a third of the project, (if done correctly under permit and to code). This member was told that we would review his plans, and let him know if we had an interest in quoting this project. We did not promise an estimate, nor do we have any obligation to quote every project we review. We are happy to set an appointment with any client who calls for a free, no obligation, initial meeting. We are always available to answer any questions, or discuss the status of a potential project, so this member was free to contact our company, at any time. We never heard from him after the initial brief meeting we had with him. We made no promise or commitment to proceed, and he was informed that we would contact him, IF we had an interest in quoting this. In reviewing his plans, time frame and budget, we declined this project. We do charge a fee for detailed written estimates, and he was never charged any fee by our company. We do great work for great clients, but not everyone we meet can become a client. This member was not ever our client.

He gave me the quote after months and months. He's very unprofessional. Considering he teaches contractor classes in the area, it was bad. The estimate was hand written and had no material listings on there. I couldn't get him to come out for two months. He was way too busy. His wife makes appointments for him and she tells you it's always tentative. He didn't show one time and I called his wife asking why they didn't call to let me know. When he finally came out, he never got the quote to me until much later. It was very vague.

Quite simply, this member did not pass our screening process. Her demeanor, vague plans, and extremely unrealistic budget were not a match for our services. We are selective in who we choose to work with. We do watch for a good fit with a potential client with a large remodeling project before we move to final contracts. We give a quick ballpark number, and see if we have a good match before proceeding. (This member did not want work done under proper permits, and was demanding dangerous code violations in order to meet her unrealistic budget for extensive remodeling in 2 units of a very old Duplex). We have a good rating with every client we actually perform work for, but unfortunately there are those we choose to steer clear of. We are very busy, and well rated by all of our actual clients. We cannot compromise our professional trade licenses by violating code requirements, and we have a great reputation with all of the city inspectors, for this reason.

They work went very well! The previous owners had the old galvanized plumbing replaced, but we needed to replace a spot that services the downstairs bathroom. It was a very tight space to work in, especially for the tall worker. He also did a repair on a leaky toilet, along with replacing the rotted floorboards. We haven't had any issues since. We were very pleased with his work.

We called for an estimate appointment and they were able to schedule it the same day. He arrived on time and was professional in his approach. However his evaluation was much less detailed than other contractors bidding on this project and seemingly somewhat disinterested. Nevertheless upon competion he said he would get back to us with his estimate. After ten days with no response, I called the office to inquire on the status. He returned my call the same day, gave me dollar figure for the total cost over the phone, and promised to send a detailed proposal via mail in a couple of days. That was over two months ago and we've never heard from him again. This was especially disappointing because of his generally very high ratings on the List. If he didn't want the job, for any reason or no reason, I couldn't care less. Just have the courtesy to say so and let us move on. The lack of responsiveness caused a long delay in the start of the project while we found another candidate and started the estimation process over again.

This type of problem is going to happen, over and over again to members like this one. An aggressive person, who is so willing to put in a complaint, with no work even contracted, would turn into a difficult client, no matter what. After reviewing this members project,(promptly) we also promptly gave him a verbal ballpark quote. He seemed to have no interest in moving forward with this project. We are very busy, with real work, so this member moved to the low-priority phase. We felt he was not interested in moving to contract. He was always welcome to call to ask about status, but we never heard from him again after he had his verbal quote. He could have called to ask about status at any time, but instead he chose to complain on "Angie's List", with out any additional conversation? In our work, there are many queries, that do not constitute a real project. We look, assess, verbally quote, and wait to see if we have a match. We have no poor ratings based on our actual work. However, not every client who requests our services will get what they want from us...fast, great, inexpensive work. Well, we work for great clients, and we do screen them, as much as they screen us. A match happens when we go through the process, together. We are the best at what we do, and that means we are willing to do whatever it takes, for those we find a good fit with.

Promised to follow-up with us beginning of the week with details about the window. Its been 2 weeks and we have heard nothing Follow-up calls have not been returned Follow-up email has not been returned Very unprofessional Very unreliable If he doesn't want to do the job...if the job is not big enough for him, at least he could have the courtesy to say so or to return calls and emails. Responsiveness is extremely important to me - If he is not responsive in the estimate stage, how responsive would he be if there were problems?

Our company does offer free estimates,(for projects we are interested in doing). We also offer professional consultation for "do-it-yourself" projects, but there is a FEE for assisting a client with projects that they want to perform themselves. With that said, this member did not really want an estimate, he wanted to be shown what was needed, and how to do his projects on his own. He was informed he would need to replace the porch, and a mason would be needed, since the foundation was very deteriorated. He insisted it just needed minor repairs, and he wanted to know what would be involved to fix the problem in the cheapest way possible. His "window replacement" would have involved a lot of re-working of the structure, and he was informed it would be costly. Again, he wanted to know how to do this, since he believed it was a minor project. His projects were clearly much more involved than his budget would allow, and he was not truthful about his intent. His phone call was returned, and we told him that we were unable to work on his "quote" any time in the near future, since we are very busy at this time of year. We do not believe we had any obligation to assist this member in his project. His expectations were not realistic, cost-wise, and he was unwilling to understand the actual scope of his work. He really just wanted to be shown what to do. There are always going to be requests for our services from customers who are not a good fit, and we would not like to insult them by directly informing them that we work only for people with truthful, and realistic representations of any project. This member was informed from the start, that we would look at his project, and THAT would determine whether we would proceed. There were no promises made. We had no contract or agreement with this member, of any kind, and we were as responsive as needed for a quick review of his work.

I had talked to him the first time he was here about several jobs, a front door issue, installation of crown molding and a few other things. It took him about two visits in two weeks to even get back to me with an estimate that I found to be troublesome. Two weeks seemed long for someone to find out what it would cost. It wasn't a huge job, just a few relatively small sized projects. The second time he brought another man with him. It took him several hours to assess the jobs, then didn't seem to be able to do it independently. The final estimate was completely outrageous. He wanted in excess of $2,500 to install hickory flooring in our small kitchen. I think its 13x15. To do the molding would have been additional. We went with another quote we got for $400. We didn't use him. He also never quoted the other things I had him look at. We had already purchased the floor, the quote was just labor. ($2,500.00)

In response to this member. We have reviewed this members file. We will always do good work, for good people, for good prices. With that said, we do our best to find a good match, for our services and client expectations. A very difficult client, who sets appointments, then is unavailable at the scheduled times and has unrealistic expectations, That is not a great fit. With that said, we are confident that our assessment of her project was quoted in such a way as to provide great work, but this was a project that needed attention to craftsmanship for a great outcome. We would have always been ready to discuss this project with this member at any time. We would, however question the quality of workmanship for any company that would have performed this complicated, custom carpentry project for $400? Again, I guess we do understand, (in our many years of of operating a company that has kept a great reputation) there will always still be those who are not a good fit for our services. We are the best at what we do, and we maintain the licenses, qualifications, and certifications to prove it. We do not feel the need to compete with those who do not. We are always ready to do the best work, for the best price, for the best people. Otherwise, we might not find a good match. We wish this member the best, but we do caution all members to review the credentials of any contractor in question, first. We could never be able stay in business, if we did not comply with what it takes to do our work within State and City guidelines. Many who do super-cheap work are not in compliance. Check out any one who you would choose to invite into your home, and be sure that you are really in good hands. It is easy to find out who does good work, and who to trust, (both for you in finding good contractors, and for us in finding good clients)! We are all in this life together so let's all do our best to be good to each other!

Called and spoke to his wife to set up the appointment. Jim came on time, fixed the leak. Very pleasant transaction. Already hired him again to do some other work. The reason I went with him is because of his licenses in both plumbing and electrical and his relationships with city inspectors. The house we purchased came with POS violations, so I feel very comfortable having Jim handle those with the city.

Mr. Engler never replied to us with an estimate for the work. We called and left countless messages that were never returned. I am very disappointed that he never contacted us again even to tell us that he would be unable to do the work. I had the impression from taking a home improvement class he taught that he would be responsive and reliable but I cannot say that was my experience. I can't recommend him.
Description of Work: We asked Mr. Engler for an estimate on changing the amps on an overloaded kitchen outlet that kept blowing out. We also wanted to know if he could do blown-in insulation. In response, we did call this member several times to discuss her "wish list".. We were responsive and reviewed her projects promptly. It was determined that this member was not interested in working toward resolving the projects at her property in any realistic way. Old houses, with multiple issues are a process to work through. It is always about communication for a good result. We are happy to proceed with any member for a good outcome, but it is important that we work together. We are happy to work toward a mutual work relationship and it is always a process. Both client and service provider have responsibilities in order to achieve great results. I called around 11 that morning and Jim arrived at 4:30 that afternoon. He had to go into the attic and rip out the floor boards and trace some very old wiring. He found and fixed a loose connection but things still didn't work even though his gauge showed that the circuit was now open. He then found that the wall switch was also bad. It was three different things - bad fan wiring and switch. Considering that the home improvement store charges $110 for just the installation, Jim's price was reasonable for all the work that he did. He left just before 9 that evening. He took off his work boots before coming in because it was raining and took care not to get things dirty. He put the floor back down in the attic and left everything as before and the new ceiling fan looks great.
Description of Work: Ceiling Fan didn't work. Needed a new one but I wasn't getting any electricity to the ceiling or even to the wall switch. I needed an electrician to find what was wrong and install the new ceiling fan.

Roofing repairs, cement/masonry, structural, restoration, exterior painting & carpentry. We are very selective in projects that we may accept from Angie's List client/members. We do not accept remodeling projects from Angie's List client/members. Our phone 440-895-WORK (9675) is the best way to leave a message detailing any project. The calls are screened, reviewed, and will not be returned if the project is not a match for our services. This is due to reviews for work not contracted. Thank you!
