Description of Work: The Basement Doctors was asked to provide a cost estimate for basement wall reinforcement, recommended per a structural engineering report. I selected The Basement Doctors based upon the recommendation of my home inspector and because of the 25-year transferable warranty. | |The structural engineering report was provided to them in advance, and The Basement Doctors relied upon the structural engineering report and did not take wall measurements of their own at the initial consultation. The engineering report stated that 5 beams were needed. Their written estimate of $3,080 included 5 beams. | |At the subsequent meeting to sign the contractual agreement, I mentioned that the home inspector had suggested that 6 beams would be what he expected, and I questioned if 5 beams were adequate to stabilize the wall. | |Basement Doctors said they would usually use 6 beams for my wall, but they would use 5 beams if that was what I wanted. The additional cost for the 6th beam would be $600. | | |I was very uncomfortable of being put in a position of deciding if I "wanted" 5 or 6 beams. That's why we had a structural evaluation, why we engaged a quality company that provided a 25-year warranty and didn't use the original company with a much cheaper estimate and only a 1-year warranty, and why we had the Basement Doctors come out to see the basement and provide a written estimate. | |I didn't want to pay $600 more if it wasn't necessary, but if it WAS necessary, well then that was a different story. However, I also felt that if 6 beams were necessary to stabilize the wall, I would have expected The Basement Doctors to tell me that at the time of the initial consultation, and not at the following consultation to sign the contract. | |I asked if 5 or 6 beams were necessary to stabilize the wall several times, and was told each time that per the structural engineering report, 5 beams were necessary, and they would install 5 beams if that was what I wanted. | |In the end, we agreed that The Basement Doctors would rely upon the structural engineering report and install the 5 beams and would honor the 25 year warranty. | |The job was permitted and passed permitting inspections, so I guess everything is okay. | |Everything else was fine. I received a full walk-through and explanation of the process and work to be done. They permitted the work. They agreed to use the steel beams delivered by the first company that was not used, and even offset the price by $100 per beam (thank you VERY much Basement Doctors). Everyone was very polite. They worked with me to accommodate my busy work schedule. The crew showed up promptly at the scheduled time. They cleaned up when they left. It was done in one day. | |One small hiccup in the installation was promptly addressed to my satisfaction. | |Per the warranty, the Basement Doctors will inspect the wall once within the first year for free (I have to schedule).

Thank you for choosing The Basement Doctor for your basement wall foundation repair. We’re very glad you liked the installation crew, they take great pride in getting the job installed correctly, communicating and keeping the work area tidy. When we come across a situation where we have conflicting experts (such as a licensed engineer and a home inspector) giving similar but differing recommendations, we go with the licensed engineer as a baseline. We love working with all the inspectors, and do so frequently. The extensive formal university education of the licensed engineer gives their solution much more weight. There is a big difference in the level of understanding, ability to calculate forces, training and experience between the two positions. They are not interchangeable. Through the years we’ve found it’s sometimes best to offer the homeowner two options. One being the rock-solid recommendation of the licensed engineer, and if an inspector recommends a little more, offer that solution too - for peace of mind. Wes has been with us for 20+ years and has thousands of structural repair projects under his belt, and has worked with engineers on many of those projects. We apologize if that wasn’t explained well and was confusing.

Description of Work: Asked for an unfinished basement remodel quote. | |Told me i needed a $2500-$3500 sump pump & waterproofing system for the basement, even thought i told him i did not get significant leakage in the basement. After 3 yrs still no leakage in basement. | |All i remember is the overall quote was double the price of the competitors.
Description of Work: I had the Basement Doctor out to check the sump that they put in a few years ago, as well as an older preexisting sump pump. Although our previous contact with them has been very professional and helpful, this time it was NOT. (We had them reinforce several walls, and finish off the basement previously.) Before the service person even began the work that I had made the appointment for, he started to "evaluate" the entire basement for water and structural issues, as well as the entire yard. He came up with a laundry list of projects. After 15-20 minutes of listening to his pronouncements of doom in regard to our basement walls, electrical panel, and mature trees in the yard, I requested that he begin work on the sump pumps. He said that it is company policy to do this type of unsolicited "evaluation". Although he stated that he does not get a commision on work that he brings in, I would imagine that there is some type of incentive driving this. At the end he asked me for feedback on how I would rate his service. In the first place, as a woman, I would never give an honest negative response to a service person who I had never met when he is in my home out of concern for retaliation. Second, I think it is rude for the company to take up my time giving me an evaluation that I did not request. And, finally, please do not walk into my beautiful yard of mature trees and state that I should take them down because they are causing basement problems.

Dear [Member name removed], We’re sorry to hear you’re unhappy with your experience. Especially with you being a past customer. As part of the service call, our techs are trained and instructed to perform an evaluation of the entire property, and alert the homeowner to any current or future concerns they see, in addition to the original work requested. We don’t want you to feel pressured or overwhelmed by the experience. It should be the opposite. We understand not wanting to give him feedback face to face – that’s not our way. From your report, it seems like the recommendations offered were too encompassing when you simply wanted your sump pump replaced. Period. We apologize the experience left you disappointed. We’ll speak to the tech about it.

Description of Work: We had a problem with water coming into the basement after it rained and cracked concrete walls so called about two weeks before we were going on vacation to get an estimate. They could not come out before we were going out of town, so we set up something for the end of the month. Two other companies came out a week before our vacation, and we signed a contract with one of them to do the work.

[Member name removed], We’re sorry we couldn’t meet your timeframe to inspect your basement and foundation concerns. We’ve worked hard to build our reputation and customer base (over 10,000 customers and 25 years in the basement business) and sometimes when the weather turns foul we get a lot of calls from people needing help. During these peak times we work a lot of late nights, weekends and overtime, but again we’re sorry we couldn’t see you sooner.
