First, my apologies for such a late review - between Dad's passing, a dear friend passing and non-stop work challenges, it has been a hectic spring and summer. Let me start by saying this, you will find out that you need John and his crew more than John and his crew needs your work. The Angie's List ratings are no accident. This company knows what they are doing. When we realized we wanted a new tile floor, we knew we wanted a contractor to do the work for us. My wife knew what tile and backsplash she wanted to use. We did not want to have to pick a contractor that demanded what tile company had to be used. I appreciated John explaining why companies (including his) do have preferences in tile products from a warranty perspective. We had an honest discussion about the fact that we as the customer were willing to take the chance that comes with buying a big box tile product. We liked John's flexibility in working with us as a customer. We also realized that the work of demoing the floor was going to be messy and a lot of work. John's crew was able to meet the challenge very efficiently in ways we never expected. It was then we knew we were in good hands for sure. At first I was worried because I knew John and his crew was in high demand at the time we knew we wanted our job to start. It turned out that because we knew exactly what we wanted and were willing to be flexible with the start date, our job was started earlier than we expected. Keep in mind that with John's success and the word of mouth surrounding the quality of his work, there are plenty of quotes, customer visits and proposals to juggle. We found no problems whatsoever in reviewing proposals and working towards a start date. The key for us was realizing that this company was worth waiting for and patience on our part would be rewarded. We are so pleased with how the work has turned out. Having the flexibility to move up our start date ahead of our expectations allowed John and his staff to complete one job and move directly into ours. We had picked out our Silestone countertop through a big box store and had all payments made in advance. In talking to the Big Box store contractor rep, we were pleased to find out that he had personally used John's company to do work for his family and he was quite pleased. His private comment included the recommendation of working with John's company instead of any of the sub contractors from the Big Box store. This was also echoed by one of the countertop specialists who also used John's company privately. Both employees strongly suggested we do what we could to fit into John's busy schedule as we would not be disappointed. This turned out to be so true. I cannot explain in this writing how efficiently the three floor layers were removed. This was our greatest concern as we realized how hard the work would be. John and his crew never had a problem. Attitudes were always positive and helpful. During the entire project, John and company did whatever it took to work on so many "little things". When the shutoff valve failed under the kitchen sink, John's staff quickly sprang into action and replaced both valves without hesitation. John then set about to create a new bottom for the waterlogged cabinet that was probably better than what we had to begin with. My wife had concerns about one heat vent having been improperly directed under the cabinetry. John took it upon himself to design a better venting plan and implement the design under the existing cabinetry. Although we have had bad problems with other contractors failing to match stain colors on trim, John's company was able to match our existing molding dead on. Talk honestly with John and his staff. Listen to what they tell you and how they tell you what they do tell you. Take it in objectively. We found that they have so much experience at doing this. By following their advice and actually changing some of our initial ideas, we now know that they were right and we would not have been happy with our original ideas. Take advantage of their experience. Thanks for all the molding work, John! Whether we are talking backsplash tile or floor tile, you will not be getting more qualified tiling staff than what John's company has. We had John and his staff level our existing cabinetry, which was a requirement for the Big Box store to install the Silestone countertop. John's company could install brand new counters and integrate the countertop of your choice if you have the money to do so. John and his staff had to totally remove several of our cabinets to properly level them for the countertop install. Had this leveling not been done properly, the Big Box store warned us that customers have had installs cancelled due to the countertop installers finding cabinets that failed the leveling validation at the beginning of their install visit. Not only did John and his staff do a perfect leveling job, but he was willing to schedule around the install of the countertop. In addition, he agreed to take on the demo of the old counter top, faucets, plumbing disconnects, etc and schedule all that demo on a date of our mutual agreement that minimized the amount of time my wife was without countertop space in our kitchen (keep in mind we kept our cabinets in place and had a fully functional kitchen for most of the work). Very rarely do you find a contractor that is willing to treat a job the way you would treat the job on your own home. I want to applaud John and his staff for showing us that expectations are not completely unrealstic anymore. The attention to detail and the willingness to work with us as a customer made a very stressful project much more tolerable. It also helped that we could identify with John and his staff. Everyone was a hard working, honest professional. These people were people that my wife would gladly invite into our home any day of the week, whether it be work related or not. Again, I will close this review the way I started it. Hopefully, you will reach the conclusion that you will need John and his company much more than they will need you. Have patience, display flexibility and keep a very open lines of communication with John and his staff. You will NOT be disappointed.
Description of Work: Kitchen remodel including demo of existing tile floor and two layers of floor underneath, prep for new tile install, new tile install, leveling existing cabinets for Big Box store silestone countertop install, tile backsplash, all new molding color matched to existing molding, floor tile repair on two existing tiled floors.

John and company did a great job. It took a while to get the doors we wanted from the supplier but it was worth the wait. They took all of the older doors out and installed the new ones in a timely fashion. Whenever there we had any questions or concerns John addressed them directly. He was more than helpful in offering his professional opinion. All of the trim work and hardware was also handled in a seamless fashion along with the actual doors and associated casings. We also had John and his crew update a bedroom that was once used as a home office from the previous owners. They removed the paneling and dry walled and primed the new surface. It was, again, handled in a professional manner along with great quality. John and company have worked with us before when we were updating all of our bathrooms in a extended house renovation plan that we are doing and based on that first experience we knew that John would be back again. It will also be in our plan to call back Desborough Construction again when we move our sights on the kitchen remodeling project coming next. I can think of no better recommendation for a contractor than to have them on the short list for any project requiring quality craftsmanship wrapped up with a fair price. Kudos to John and his group of dedicated professionals. Highly (and enthusiastically) recommended!

John and his crew were so professional. All of the work was done beautifully and professionally. The attention to detail with the installation of the kitchen backsplash was perfect. My new kitchen counter top and sink are beautiful. I never had to worry about any clean up, since they took care of that every time they worked in the house. All the work in the bathroom was done earlier than expected which was a pleasant surprise. Here too the attention to detail was spot on. This is the second time I have used Desborough Construction and I would recommend John to anyone. If I have any more work in the future, John will definitely be the first person I call. I absolutely love his work.
Description of Work: John and his crew worked in my kitchen. They replaced my kitchen counter top, installed a new sink and installed new backsplash and removed a very old garbage disposal. In addition they installed my new bathroom vanity, counter top, medicine cabinet and new light fixture.

To be honest when I first received the estimate for the work we wanted I thought it was a expensive. I hadn't specified any timeline so it took awhile to get the project going. Due to these issues, I was a little nervous about how it would go and I can totally say that every dollar I spent was worth it!!! The first part of our project entailed tearing out a large closet and opening that area with a bench and drawers in our mud room. In addition, we wanted to put built in closets, drawers and shelves in our laundry room. They were very helpful in making suggestions to the project as I had only a vague idea of what I wanted. The workmanship was impeccable. The installation went without any problems. The final result makes a huge difference in the space and functionality of the two rooms. The second part of the project was tearing out the old laundry room sink and vanity and replacing it with a dog shower. Again, John was very helpful with ideas about how it might look. The final product is amazing. I was very impressed by the attention to detail. The workmanship is impeccable. They also replaced my ceiling lights in part of our basement and John took it upon himself to replace all the damaged ceiling tiles and light bulbs. This was above and beyond what we had asked them to do. The workers were always courteous. Everything was clean at the end of the day. John is very professional and I would not hesitate to recommend him to others. He also communicates well with email and keeps you up-to-date regarding the project. We will definitely use him again for further house projects!

It went well. The men were punctual. Tarps protected all furniture and flooring. John kept in contact with me so I was aware of daily progress as I had to go out of town. I trusted him in my home to get the job done while I was away. No mess was left behind as i have experienced with other contractors. I came home and all was well. John is also good for recommending professionals needed for other jobs in the home. I would recoomend this company to anyone who needs work done in their home.
Description of Work: They had to tear out a family room ceiling and take off crown molding. New insulation and ceiling needed to be installed. New molding was needed as the old molding fell apart. It was replaced and the price of that was not reflected in the bill. The walls were also painted.

After our first, satisfied experience with Desborough Construction, we didn't think twice about hiring John to renovate our master bath, install beadboard in our back hall and powder room, and replace a toilet. John and his crew are professional and friendly. They always take time preparing the workspace to protect carpets and flooring. Likewise they are exceptional in terms of cleanup. John has always demonstrated flexibility when it comes to making modifications to original plans, and his attention to detail is without question. He always strives for ultimate customer satisfaction!

All bathrooms were completed to our satisfaction. John and his crew always called ahead and gave times when they would be onsite. They were always within their target times. They setup for the work for the day including laying any tarps or other protection for the house as a part of getting to the area that they were working on. After the days work, they were always good about cleaning up. The job did include a good degree of coordination with other people (primarily the counter tops that required the vanities to be in place before taking the measurements for the quartz surfaces. Where there were any issues in the installation, John brought them up and was ready to give suggestions on how to best resolve them. If we had any suggestions or questions he handled them very professionally. In all the bathroom work was completed timely and with great quality of workmanship. We are pleased enough that we are talking with John into doing the "phase 2" part of our house renovation. I am very confident that this work will also be handled with the same professionalism and quality that we had with the bathrooms work. John and crew were always approachable and highly responsive to concerns and questions involving the work. I would highly recommend Desborough Construction for anyone looking for quality work. I would be perfectly confident in placing our home in the capable hands of John and his craftsmen.
Description of Work: Renovated 4 bathrooms. 3 bathrooms involved installing brand new vanities. One bathroom involved a new flooring installation. One other bathroom involved a complete tear down including a tub/shower installation.

Desborough Construction did a super job on skimcoating the walls. John came to the house to give me an estimate and in two days emailed with the quote. We accepted, agreed on a date, and work began. Whole process was 2 days, each a few hours long. John and Rob were punctual, happy to answer my questions, and finished in time frame that I was told. Their quote was not the lowest we had, but I felt that after speaking with John, his company would do a good job. I was not wrong. However, with that being said, I did have to call/email John a few times to start the ball rolling, which I found a bit frustrating, as I did not hear back for several days from initial phone call.

The owner arrived on time for this appointment and was energetic, had creative ideas and took careful measurements. He said it would be "about a week" until we heard back. The way he said it, I figured it would more likely be 1 1/2 to 2 weeks before we heard anything. That was 5 months ago. I am still waiting to hear. I contacted another provider after waiting a couple of weeks and hearing nothing from Desborough Construction. They came out, gave me estimates, helped me to select all the materials, scheduled the job, and completed all the work by the end of March.

The estimate process was smooth and detailed. John, the owner, came to our house one night (at a time of our convenience) for about two hours. He responded with a detailed, priced estimate within 3 business days. Once the terms were in agreement, work began within a two week period. The job itself lasted six weeks of calendar time, but the crew was onsite approximately half that time due to delivery and offsite working schedules. John handled all of the interfacing with the city of Mentor for permits. He also arranged for the inspections (with times of our approval) and welcomed our attendance. Once construction began, John and his staff were always punctual, pleasant, and clean. They used high quality electrical and construction components. They used Sherwin Williams paint and primer with colors of our choice. John also meticulously matched the baseboard, molding, railing, spindle and door styles from the rest of the house, so the room feels like a natural extension. All of the new construction was well blended into the existing framing and drywall that existed around the stairwell. John was also extremely accommodating. He agreed to changes in wall insulation and ceiling framing after work had already begun. The ceiling change required him to redo recently finished work. Also, when our existing sump pump failed suddenly during construction, John brought himself and his plumber over on a Sunday afternoon to replace it. There was no additional charge beyond parts and normal installation. Overall, John and his team performed high quality work at a reasonable price. I would use Desborough Construction again without hesitation.
Description of Work: Desborough Construction built a 1000 square foot basement rec room for us. The work included ceiling framing (the walls had been previously framed), sheetrock walls with priming and painting, and sheetrock ceilings with stucco, priming and painting. The ceiling was framed to box in several beams and HVAC ducts. All walls were filled with pink fiberglass insulation. The job also included wall outlets with new circuits, recessed ceiling lights with new circuits and wall switches, additional dedicated circuits in an unfinished utility room, and cable TV runs. Two interior hinged doors were installed: one for a closet and another for a utility room. Baseboard and molding were installed throughout the room. Two basement beam support poles were encased to match the rest of the molding. A new railing system including decorative spindles was installed down the basement stairs. Flooring was not included. Additionally, a battery backup sump pump was installed to replace a failed, older sump pump.
