John Desborough came over to take a look at our kitchen and discuss ideas we had. As he was taking measurements, he foresaw a couple of issues, but was quick to give us ideas on how he could handle them. We were impressed with how he quickly picked up on our vision of what we wanted and made a plan to see it through. He was very reasonable in estimating how long the job would take and when they would be able to begin work on our kitchen, and work began when he said it would. I should also mention the designer John works with - Erica Otto at Home Depot in Mentor. Erica did a fantastic job designing the kitchen. She is extremely knowledgeable about the products they offer, and how everything will come together. We made several changes to the original plan and she was very helpful. John and Erica have worked together for years, and we benefited a great deal from their professional relationship. There was a lot of demolition work at first - messy business for sure. John, Nate and Rob did a terrific job of minimizing the mess as best they could, and cleaned up every day when they left. I won't kid you - it was messy at times, and having your kitchen torn apart really makes life interesting! But as I said, John and his crew did their best to minimize the inconvenience. As work went along, we made minor changes and added a couple of things for them to do that were not in the original proposal. John was very accommodating of the changes and easy to work with. The job was finished when he said it would be, and we are very, very happy with how the kitchen turned out! I highly recommend Desborough Construction. We are planning to have them back to do our bathrooms!

John came to the house, we went over all the changes I was hoping to make and he said he would have the plans with the costs to me within a week. He was spot on. I got the plans and the cost for the work and was shocked at the expense. I spoke with John and he was more than willing to work with me to help in the expense area. My husband and I were/are willing to do most of the grunt work which made a hugh difference in the cost. John is very professional, courteous and willing to work with you on projects. I have since hired John and his company to do the finishing of my kitchen which should be started in about three weeks or so. I will do a second review of the work actually done.

Overall the experience went very well. They gutted the bathroom quickly and the first 8 days were extremely productive and we only had to wait a bit after for completion for some other materials to be ordered and installed, The contractor and his assistants are professional, responded to my concerns and unforseen issues, and the contractor knows his craft well. The result is a very beautiful bathroom and bedroom, completely different from the state of the rooms prior to his work! The only point i would emphasize is the importance of good communication, that is communicating exactly what your vision is for the remodel or project you have and to reiterate important details to help ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible. That said, Even though there was a miscommunication over some material we had not ordered, in the end the contractor took care of our concerns and we were satisfied with the resolution. I would very much recommend his services and intend to hire him again for any possible future projects.

After agreeing to the estimate, John and his co-worker Rob showed up on time and spent quite a bit of time taking the tile off the floor, preparing it for reattachment, and finally reapplying the tiles plus the correct adhesive (the builder used the wrong type). Since the tile had to "set", Rob came back the following day to grout the floor. There was no cleanup when he left. The floor actually looks better than it has in many, many years. Yes, Mom would use Desborough Construction for other "jobs" in her home!
Description of Work: My mother wanted an estimate on a small tile floor that had one cracked tile, need of grouting, and tiles that needed to be reattached to the slab.

John Desborough's attention to detail and willingness to go that extra mile was also impressive. We were also impressed by his use of technology for design and communication. That is how we like to work, so seeing him work the same way was a good match for us. From now on, we will use Desborough for any future projects that require his expertise.
Description of Work: John Desborough designed a floor plan for our basement, taking input from us, which resulted in an optimal finished space. We were impressed by John's professionalism, his obvious experience in his field, his design suggestions, and his willingness to listen to us. Additionally, he has a great team who also was very professional. He installed ceramic floor tiles in the bathroom. The installation was flawless. We liked that he suggested a current trend to use a thin grout line. That was exactly what we were thinking. He also installed vinyl flooring which also turned out very nice. The dry wall, doors, trim, closets, painting, ceiling, and lighting were also installed to our expectations.

John, Nate and their crew are the all-purpose contracting team you dream about. With John Desborough in charge, every detail in every room is perfectly done. They are smart, honest, good-humored, hard working, and totally dedicated to everything being done right as if it were their own home. As detail-oriented and organized as we are, they are even more so. They arrived every morning ready with the supplies they needed, set up all their power tools for the day, and got right to work. At the end of every day, they cleaned up neatly before they left. They kept us informed daily and made excellent suggestions we'd have never thought of, like the beautiful handmade wainscoting in the master bathroom, crown molding in all the bedrooms, and handsome wood mantle & fireplace surround in keeping with the home's 1925 architecture. We expected them to outsource the complex tiling and the Schluter shower in the master bath but they did that too and it looks like a designer showroom. Both John and Nate are highly skilled craftsmen and great creative problem solvers. We initially hired them just to do the kitchen but liked them so much we kept them on for six months until the house was finished. There are a few things they don't do themselves but as general contractors, they have a network of other really talented craftsmen they'll bring in, e.g. major drywallers, painters, plumbers, electricians, and glass cutters/installers. Needless to say, we'd recommend Desborough Construction to anyone for any construction, remodeling, or carpentry job, large or small.
Description of Work: As part of a complete (totally gutted down to the studs) 3-story home remodel of our 1925 house, Desborough Construction installed the entire kitchen, new bathrooms on 3 floors, crown molding and other woodwork throughout the house, created a new pantry, installed interior and exterior doors, built a new living room mantle & fireplace surround, and did some exterior roof & stucco repairs. Major skills included expert carpentry, tiling, plumbing (sinks/faucets/showers/tub/toilets), and general contracting. General contracting included kitchen & bath design and bringing in other expert tradesmen as needed.. (The amount paid excludes whole house plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting & most of the installed items)

He came over one evening noticed we had our kitchen recently done--so he knows we'd spend some money-- He measures the basement we tell him what we're looking to do--He left we felt with, a do Idea of what we want --a month later we get an envelope in the mail--I remember being excited to see what he came up with. Its just a floor plan of the existing basement just the walls and floor. I called him that day --and indicted thats all you get.It was suppose to be worth like $300.
Description of Work: A very personable, and nice guy-- we bought the big deal, we wanted a remodel of the basement-the offer was $75.00 / supposable should have cost much more.. We knew what we wanted done. a design for a masterbed/bath in our basement. What we got a month later was simply a drawing to scale of the existing basement. Told him how disappointed I was. I don't think he cared.

John was the first contractor we had out. We had 3 other contractors and John was the best price. We really only had a vague idea of what we wanted. John took our ideas and transformed our basement into a beautiful living space. We called the beginning of May and wanted the job done for our son's graduation party in late June. Work began a week later. He told us what time the workers would get there and what to expect throughout the process. His workers were very polite and courteous. We have a very old very heavy pool table which we worried about how to move around while the floor was being done. John and his crew took care of it. We were amazed at how fast the basement came together. From custom cabinetry, granite counter tops, and wine bar to the ceramic tile floors and wainscoting Desbourough Construction did a fantastic job. I would definitely recommed them!!

Desborough Construction did a complete gut and remodel of one of our bathrooms. They also took out two tiny closets in the adjoining bedroom and hallway and made one large reach-in closet in the bedroom. We got several estimates with widely varying prices. John's estimate was somewhere in the middle. We liked his proposal and his estimate and decided to go with him. We are happy that we did. Our house was built in 1922. Needless to say there were some surprises when the walls and floors were removed. John had to replace joists and the sub-floor. He also had to replace the soil pipe and stack. His charges on these unexpected repairs were very reasonable and he and his crew did a great job. Plumbing, and electrical were done professionally and to code. We had a hand held bidet sprayer and a heated floor installed. These are not commonly done here in the USA, but John did them right. Tile work and carpentry were also beautifully done. John matched the lovely wide woodwork of our old home, not only in the bathroom, but in the new closet as well. Clean-up was done every day and the job was completed in the time-frame agreed upon. Our new bathroom is beautiful. Our new closet is great. We will definitely hire Desborough Construction again for future projects.

I wanted a sturdy privacy fence to enclose my yard.I met with John to get a free estimate. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. After discussing a few options and taking measurements he drafted up an estimate. It was a very fair price comparable to other estimates I had received, and he was by far the most professional operation I met with. His crew was very punctual and fast. They did a wonderful job installing the fence and cleaning up the dirt from the post holes that were dug. John was very easy to reach and always responded promptly.I am very happy with the end result and would definitely use Desborough Construction for future projects.

After receiving a couple of estimates we decided to go with John Desborough which turned out to be the best decision we could have made. From the very beginning John was all about what we wanted. His estimate was right on. His projection for how long the job would take (4 to 6 weeks) was generous given that he finished the work in 4 weeks. His crew was totally professional. Each part of the job was completed expeditiously and cleanup was never an issue. John consulted us constantly about how the job was going. He went out of his way to make sure we were satisfied. Some small things that we thought of after the estimated was agreed upon were completed without charge, e.g., I asked if he could insulate the closet that was constructed to house the sump pump to reduce noise. After the job was completed there were a few small details that we wished to have corrected, John did these without hesitation. We truly believe that our basement is now a showcase. We can't wait to show it off.
Description of Work: John and his crew finished our basement and stairway hall to the first floor. They constructed closets to contain the electrical panel boxes, sump area, well and water softener system and double door access to our crawl space. They also installed two doorways to the unfinished area of our basement where my workbench and extra freezer and refrigerator are housed. A combination drywall and drop ceiling was installed with pot lights and switches which greatly improved the amount of light in the basement. A pony wall was installed to delineate a seating area, while maintaining an open feeling to the room..John also installed beadboard and a chair rail in the stairway leading to the first floor. The walls were finished with drywall and baseboards installed. They also installed vinyl plank flooring as well as shoe molding around the baseboards. All walls, doors and trim were painted, as well as the stairway hall.

John responded to an email request for a site visit for purposes of information gathering to develop a quote for a renovation of our master bathroom. John was quick to respond to the original email request (i.e. he responded within an hour)! John offered options on days for him to come to our home and we quickly agreed to a day and timeframe. The day prior, John provided an approximate time. Mid-day on the day of the appointment, John provided a closer estimate of the time he'd arrive. While he had to push the time back slightly due to a current job he was on, he communicated clearly and a couple of times so that we'd know when he would arrive. Once at our home, John listened to our thoughts on the renovation and then offered his thoughts as well as told us about products he would use and how the quote would be stated (i.e. labor plus allowances for tile, fixtures, etc.) John provided us with information that several other companies had not offered. We were comfortable with John's knowledge and experience as well as attention to detail. We look forward to receiving the quote!

He came all the way out to my home, but I didn’t get anything. I had to have my deal refund. Angie’s List helped me get my money back. He got back with me quickly and came out fast as well. It took two or three weeks and I called him to see about the estimate. He said he needed to bring a sub-contractor out to get a final estimate and I have never heard from him since that time.
Description of Work: This was for interior remodeling and was for a new build on a garage.
The Desborough team was very professional and cleaned up as they worked. The final product was perfect. John actually went above and beyond on this project, especially at the clean-up at the end where he carted away debris that we had on site from prior work. I highly recommend Desborough construction to anyone who is looking to have any home remodeling or repair work done. Truly a great company!

I was looking for someone to refinish the kitchen/utility room and possible additional work depending on how professional they were and for the right price. I decided to try Angie's List for a reputable contractor. John Desborough Construction came highly rated on Angie's List so I decided to call him and get an estimate for the work. I had a rough guesstimate of what things would cost. His estimate was in the ball park of what I was willing to pay. He is a very personable guy and left me with a good impression. I decided to go with him. I was in maintenance and knew how to do the things I was aking to be done. I found out when he started to work just how professional and thorough he and his crew are. Work began on February 15th and completed on March 21. The work was done in stages with breaks in between. This was OK by me as I have a ranch home and it allowed us to get back to normal for awhile. After all, the main living areas of the house were being worked on. I am completely satisfied with all work that has been done and look forward to the hard part now-adding the things that make it a home. I highly reccommend John Desborough Construction and would not hesitate to use him again.
Description of Work: I needed the kitchen/utility room overhauled. The kitchen was last updated in the early 70's or even before. The utility room probably when the house was built in the 60's. I added additional work as time went on and John was able to accomodate. John and his crew, both named Rob, completely gutted the kitchen. They then replaced with new cabinets, sink, over the stove exhaust fan vented outside, installed an over the counter microwave, new ceiling light, new grounded electrical outlets, rerouted the water line to the refrigerator, rerouted a heat vent, installed a garbage disposal and all plumbing associated with the new sink/disposal/refrig water line, repaired cracks in the walls, refinished the ceiling, widened the opening from the kitchen to the eating area allowing for a more open appearance, installed Pergo flooring in the kitchen and thru the dining area to the front door and also in the utility room, installed new doors from the utility room to the kitchen and for the front room closet, removed a short wall and widened the opening in a main support wall for a more open appearance, installed new cabinets in the utility room, repaired cracks in utility room walls, refished the rear door, repainted the ceilings and walls and all wood trim in the utility, dining/front rooms, hallway and bathroom, repaired walls in the bathroom, removed carpeting in the dining area to install Pergo flooring, installed a ladder for the crawl space overhead, replaced gas lines for the dryer and range and the heat vent for the dryer, installed the refrigerator and range and removed old appliances and cleaned up all debris daily and gave all a final cleaning when finished. I tried to cover all work done, hopefully I did. In all the bathroom, hallway, front room, dining area, kitchen and utility room were refinished along with the ladder going to the crawl space.

As was the case with our bathroom remodel. John and his crew did a wonderful job. Very professional and his attention to detaiil is amazing. Everyone on the crew was very polite, hard-working, and friendly. The project was completed before our requested deadline and that made us very happy. John arranged for all inspections and passed them with flying colors. As an aside, when the building inspector came to do the final inspection to issue the occupancy permit, he was very impressed with the look and quality of the work.
Description of Work: John and his crew took our 15' x 18' back deck and enclosed it to create a three season room. Obtained all Lake County and Concord Twp. permits. Reinforced the existing deck to support the weight of the new structure. Demolished existing railings and moved the steps down to secondary pool deck to accomodate new storm door. After construction of the shell, installed 4 large windows, full-view screen door, 7' sliding patio door, and trapizoid windows in the peek of the front of the roof. To finish the inside, installed Kentucky Red Cedar siding on ceiling and two walls constructed to enclose the area. Also, prepared the existing deck floor with roofing paper and 1/2 inch treated plywood for our installation of carpet tiles. The exterior was completed to match the house with siding, gutters, soffitt, and flashing. Major electrical work was done to install recessed lighting, ceiling fan, receptacles, etc.
Started a bit later than planned due to their other jobs, but once they were here, it was pretty much 40 hours/week. Very professional and enjoyable work crew. T.J. was the head of the crew; very friendly and personable. Contact with John Desborough was only an email away and he dropped by frequently to check on progress and to do work himself. THey were responsive after the job was completed in coming back to adjust a couple minor issues. We are very much enjoying this new huge room in our home. Playing ping-pong, watching TV/gaming, exercising, doing homework, lounging, separation between adults and teens. Love it.
Description of Work: Totally renovated our 100-year-old basement and created a very enjoyable living space. First, demo. Second, added walls! with drywall to existing studs. New ceramic tile floor in basement (covering up awful floor) and a stairway to kitchen and to external door, drop tile ceiling, new door to driveway with lock, paint job of all is beautiful. Installed half-bath with the necessary plumbing for sink & toilet and electric for light/fan. New recess lighting in basement and lots of electrical outlets (needed in these old homes!).

The job went very well. John is very professional in all aspects of his work. It was evident from the initial appointment where he spent the necessary time and asked questions to be sure of what we wanted. His estimates are accurate, and his work is excellent. We are happy with the suggestions that he gave us, and we are very happy with the outcome. John was especially careful to only give suggestions and not pressure us to do anything unless we really liked it. He will accomodate for your schedule, and he will respect your time and do his work with the least possible disruption of your routine. I would definitely call him for any new remodel in my home.
