Randy did an outstanding job. He even picked up our new fireplace insert because we didn't have a truck to bring it home. He and his team did everything in the most professional way. They even started our first fire and explained how very different our new unit was from our 35 year old one. Can not say enough good things about this firm.

My appointment was at 4:00 and they called me promptly at four and told me that they had an emergency and would be able to be at my house by 5:00. They arrived at 4:30 and were very professional. Inspected my fireplace/chimney and found that it did not need cleaned or repaired. Since I do not have any experience with fireplaces, he showed me how to use it and told me what kind of wood to burn in it. I was very pleased with the service. He could have cleaned the chimney and charged me even though it didn't need done and I would have never known the difference. I also appreciated that they called to let me know they were going to be late.

First of all, let me just say this - if you are planning ANY fireplace work in the Greater Cleveland area and you DON'T call Randy, you are doing yourself a HUGE disservice!! Randy was the ultimate professional from the very first contact. He responded to my message promptly and arrived for an estimate at the stated time, after calling ahead to assure me he was on his way. He assessed the job, gave us tons of free advice, which included telling us where we might source the stone we were looking for, and recommending several dealers for the purchase of the gas insert. He also warned us of some potential rip off companies. Our project was to raise the level of the hearth two courses of bricks, find and install a stone slab across the top of the hearth, and find and install the direct gas insert. After giving us an estimate and providing the sourcing information, he assured us he could do the job in the time frame we desired. We went out to the Kipton Quarry in Oberlin, Ohio and met the owner who raved about Randy. He showed us lots of stone, and we stood next to the huge saw he uses to cut stone - amazing. He then gave us an unbelievable price on the size we wanted. He asked for our email address and later that week he sent pictures of several fresh cut pieces of the type we wanted. We picked out a beautiful and unique slab of limestone with a brown swirling color that we would never have found anywhere else (Highly Recommend this quarry if you need stone). Next we visited two of the shops Randy recommended for the gas insert, and Rick at Heat Exchange on Lorain Road in N Ridgeville was a great source of more information and advice and helped us pick out the proper insert for our project. Then, he gave us an outstanding deal on the insert and accessories, primarily because we mentioned Randy's name! We called Randy to set up the install date and here is the BEST part - Randy went out and picked up the stone and the gas insert himself, and then arrived at the precise time he stated. He and his assistant were all business as they first laid down tarps and prepared the work area, then removed the old fireplace screen and unit. They very quickly completed all the tasks, cleaned up all the mess from the job, had the insert working perfectly and explained the operation. They took NO breaks and even skipped lunch, working about five hours straight to finish the job. Honestly, it was such a relief to have a true professional complete our project. We are now planning to have our entire fireplace updated with new stone to replace the old dated red brick ... and of course, no one but these guys will be called.

Our woodburner is an antique, and he said new ones are much more efficient. Since we only burn about 10 times in the winter, he said cleaning is not necessary, and only call him when we burn a lot more. He was very informative and educational. He did advise to get liners around our woodburner doors for more efficiency.

The service we received was only second to the education he offered. After a quick inspection of the chimney, fireplace insert, and wood burning stove he informed us we didn't need his services. Despite that, Randy spent an hour with us explaining how our system works and giving us many details about how to operate it as efficiently as possible. After the basic information, he walked my husband through how to do self maintenance on the basement unit, which was taking money out of his own pocket, since he could have just said he would do it and charged us! Finally, we continued outside where he showed us which trees on our property were 'standing dead wood' and could be used as firewood. He concluded by educating us on properly seasoned firewood, where to obtain alternative fuels, and an open-ended invitation to call with any questions. This is a person that I would not only call again, but would highly recommend to anyone. P.S. After sending him an email and calling to set our initial appointment, I was disappointed to have not heard back in the first few days. When he did call on day three, he apologized for the delay and explained that he had been on a chimney insert install in Canada that a client had paid for him to do! Impressive.
Description of Work: Randy came to the house to sweep our chimney, if needed. After climbing to the roof, he explained that we didn't need a sweep at all.

Randy came out to address an issue with the venting of my water heater in the basement. He arrived on time, analyzed the situation, and recommended that a new chimney liner be installed. I provided my email address so that he could send me a written estimate and he said he would email the estimate that afternoon or evening. After 1 1/2 weeks and leaving him a voicemail, I have yet to receive an estimate or response from him. Randy seemed to be very knowledgeable and I was comfortable in scheduling the repair based on the information he provided to me. He gave me a verbal quote and mentioned business was slow at the time, so I can't understand the lack of follow-up on his part. Very odd...

I didnt want to do this job myself because it was too high for me to work comfortably. But also, the City wanted it inspected for safety. The guy that did the inspection was very pleasant. But what got him the job was: 1) that he didnt trying to talk me into more repair than what was needed 2) educated me on the causes of the current issues 3) talked me OUT of repairs I thought might be needed, but were not. That, is a big deal. So with the inspection in hand, I felt I had found the correct company, to do the needed repairs. 5 days later a different guy returned to do the work and it was complete in just a couple hours. They rebuilt the triple crown, replaced the top pipe of one and then installed the stainless steel caps. One small issue is they should have cleaned up the debris that fell down the chimney. Several people have commented on how nice it looks and I say it looks much better than the majority of home around me. NOTE: Price is and quot;Band quot; because I did get other estimates to compare. Quality is and quot;Band quot; do to clean-up .

The problem is grey-colored mortar was used when the rest of the house has tan-colored mortar. We did not specify the mortar color although trusted the contractor would have known better to match the chimney mortar with the mortar on the house. Now the chimney looks ugly and stands out! Would hire another company rather than this one as details are important.

The experience with Randy's company went extremely well. Randy inspected both of my fireplaces and gas log sets. On my old original (1904) fireplace, he found the damper was stuck halfway open and was able to fix it. He also located a dead bird above the damper and removed it. He made several recommendations on the use of my gas logs and safety issues I should be aware of. His knowledge of fireplaces and gas logs in particular is extensive.
Description of Work: We had installed a vent-free gas log set in an old (1904) fireplace in our Century Home. I had some concerns on whether my damper was closed correctly, and if indeed it was safe to use the logs in such an old fireplace.

It did not go. I called him back three days later to tell him that I had chosen him to do the work. He was going to do it shortly. Waited three weeks and then called him back. There was a lot of rain so this delay was not unreasonable. He said he would do it the next week - that he was having other guys help him that week and that he had not gotten to me because he was busy doing chimney sweeps for the winter. I did not use my fireplace so I guess I was not important. Today is the 13th of November, and am still waiting for Randy to show. Forget it Randy, all done now.
Description of Work: Randy came out to inspect my chimney on Labor Day which I thought was very nice. At any rate, that was 9/3/12. Provided an estimate for several hundred dollars to fix my crown and flues.

See the item above for how it went. The system would not allow me to cut and paste, so everything is written above. As said, it couldn't have gone smoother, the communication was great, the work attitude great, and work great.
Description of Work: Our primary chimney was covered in cultured stone when it was built 12 years ago. Due to poor workmanship and the misapplication of materials the fireplace chase leaked, the stone veneer failed and the entire 15 feet tall chimney needed to be stripped of stone, wood chase repaired, waterproofing applied and siding put in place of the stone as was originally designed for the house. The chimney is 15 tall above the roof line on the outside downhill side of a very steep and fully landscaped hill. The carpentry was out of their normal material spectrum, but they took the project on with the promise from me that the product choosen by me would be easier to install than one would think. The location of the chimney was a challange as it is located on the back edge of a house with a walk out basement and a very steep natural slope with mature landscape and trees surrounding it. They immediately assured me they could get a boom truck bucket to do the work, which they did. I called during the day and left a message and before the evening was out, I recieved a return call telling me I would get a call from Jimmy and he would schedule an appointment. He called as promised, we set up a time and he showed up on time and assessed the situation and talked the project through. it was a big project, was slightly outside of their normal work, but worked with me and through with me. That next day i got a bid for the work, which was VERY resonable. We scheduled the work subject to weather and the completion of their current project. jimmy kept me very informed and the schedule shifted, but I never felt put off, just well informed and respected. TYhey called before they came even though it was the rescheduled date and time. they came the next 3 days and showed up when they said they wood, worked hard the entire time, were respectful of my property, cleaned up each night as needed and never left the site in disarray. Even though they were working with material that was different to them, they worked professionally and took their time to make sure the job was done right. A few monr "changeorders" took place during the course of the job and the price they charged for these extras was more than reasonable. The work is done beautifully, the change is dramatic and water tight.

Very pleased with My Chimney Guys. Unique, professional services, work was not easy given the temps and weight of the shroud. While I hope to have to use his services agian, I would not hesitate.
Description of Work: Randy installed a new chimney cap and decorative copper shroud on our stone chimney. Upon initial inspection, he pointed out that the existing chimney cap did not cover the chimney perimeter and could allow water to get between the stone facade and casing. He gave us the OPTION of replacing this with a new stainless steel cap (reasonably priced - right thing to do). He did this first while the large custom copper shroud was still being fabricated (took several weeks), even though he did not charge me extra for it (quote only included one trip) or ask for a deposit, because he wanted to get the original chimney cap replaced to minimize the potential for water damage while the shroud was being fabricated. Overall the quote was a little higher than I had hoped, but Randy really knew his craft (compared to others) and he put his own money up front to purchase the stainless steel cap and copper shroud (nobody does that). Randy actually did the install on a weekend believe it or not as the weather was not cooperating during the original scheduled install. Randy also gave me a 5% cash discount which worked out great given the amount of the shroud.

We live in Shaker Hts and our house stuck out badly in the neighborhood because it's one of the few 1960s home when most are 1920-30s and are far more architecturally interesting. Our house was very plain and squat-looking and lacked a lot of curb appeal. We decided to replace the ugly brick with cultured stone to beautify the exterior a bit. I decided I really wanted a proper mason to do the work because applying cultured stone (made out of molded concrete and then painted to look and feel like stone) seems to be very similar to applying real stone. Randy was referred by my chimney person who I really valued (Gary of Century Chimney) since Gary doesn't do this type of work. But, a concrete person might have done just as good of a job and probably for less. From the beginning Randy was great. Randy returned my call promptly and stopped by to look at the existing wall. He took the time to explain to me everything that would need to be done and how he would do it and why. He took a practical approach balancing perfection with cost. I didn't feel like he skimped but nor do I feel like he was excessive or overly cautious.- He told me what he would do with the windows since the ledge, made out of stone, would need to be replaced with a wider piece to account for the additional thickness of the stone veneers. - He told me how he would go deal with corners, and other trickier items like the existing built-in mailslot. - He asked me about the landscaping around the wall so he would know which ones would need to be transplanted (he would move if needed) and which ones could be stomped on. He assured me that the existing concrete brick wall did not need to be pulled down because and quot;it's been around for 50 years and looks in great conditionand quot;. Another guy (Advanced Masonry) wanted to pull it down and rebuild to be and quot;on the safe sideand quot;. Randy gave us the name of a store (Ohio City Stone?) to look at and select the cultured stone. He even called the store in advance to let them know we were coming. The store was really good - big selection and very helpful, knowledgeable people. After we brought home some stone sample boards, Randy came over again to go over examples of what we want based on pictures in catalogs, giving us his opinion and experience on what would work well or look better. He then took the sample boards back to the store, since it was closer to his home and over an hour away from us. On the days of the actual work, his crew were very professional. The one guy smoked cigarettes but he never left a single butt in the yard. At one point, I thought there was too much space between some of the stones, which I had told Randy I didn't want. And the men filled in those gaps with small chunks of stone without any complaint. They never had to step into our house or use our bathroom. At the end of the project, they cleaned up the area really well, hosing down the area to reduce the dust and picking up everything in the yard, which was where they would lay out stones for selecting before applying them to the wall. They were very kind to and safe around my 2.5 yr old son who liked stepping on all the stones on the grass and climbing on their trailer. Their banter was clean and funny as well. I also like Randy because he stuck to his timings and his estimate. He considered how his work would look to the neighbors while in progress so he made sure to complete a section before starting another one. If I knew how to upload photos, I would definitely show photos of before and after. We are thrilled with the result and I would definitely recommend him again!
Description of Work: Applied cultured (fake) stone veneer over existing concrete brick on the front of our house (approx 375 sq ft). This also involved removing two stone ledges and replacing them with wider stone ledges under windows and trimming the left & right sides of the brick wall so that the stone would wrap & meet the existing wood siding better.

I found the Chimney Guys here on Angie's List. One of three companies I called. The first company never showed and the other one suggesting rebuilding. Randy came by when he said he would to take a look at the chimney. He promptly emailed me an estimate. He stated that only tuckpointing was needed and only on the top third as the rest was sound. The work was scheduled promptly. There was an issue with weather and Randy promptly called to reschedule. On the appointed date he showed up himself with two employees. He supervised the beginning of the job before leaving to check on another. The workers were very professional and did a great job. They cleaned up the yard and the neighbor's driveway before they left. Randy even had them touch up one of the chimney caps that was not on the original estimate. I was very pleased with the honesty, quality of the work and their professionalism and will definitely use them again and recommmend them to others !

Jim was prompt, friendly and knowledgeable. He pointed out all the things we needed to keep an eye on (not much) and that our chimney had been well maintained over the years. We will definitely continue to use The Chimney Guys for all our fireplace and chimney maintenance.
Description of Work: We have a leak in our fireplace and called The Chimney Guys because the former owner of the house used them. We found out that The Chimney Guys have a long history with our house, ever since the father of the current owner provided services to the original owner of our house. Jim did a thorough inspection inside and outside of our fireplace and chimney. It was determined that the caulk was coming away from the stone at the flashing and and that was the probable cause of the leak. He confirmed the believe of our roofer who said the same thing, the loose caulk was most likely the cause of our leak. Jim said the chimney was in good shape and the fireplace did not need cleaning at this time. He pointed out some small cracks in the mortar of the secondary chimney, but it did not need attention now. He recommended next spring to have them filled in. He said if we burned a fire every night from now thorough the winter, then we'd be ready for a cleaning in the spring!

Randy came out and did an inspection of each chimney. Neither needed to be cleaned (no charge for inspection). He felt that the leaking may be caused by caps that don't protect from driving rain so I had him install two new caps. He came inside and gave me a lot of advice on how to best reface each fireplace as well as how to replace the crown on each chimney (something I wanted to do). He recommended reducing the opening of each to ensure proper draft. He had his mason come out and install new lintels and then fill in the opening with firebrick. Mason did a great job. Perfect even though it won't be seen. Both spent a long time answering my questions regarding the refacing project. Highly recommend this company.
