This is an update to my first report. About a year after the work was done, I discovered that the new gas line was very close to the surface - in some places less than 6". This put's it in easy range of damage, not the sort of thing you want with a gas line. I have now placed pavers over it to protect it. Obviously, the individuals who did the work didn't know their job or were lazy and sloppy.

They were the first heating contractor with a live person answering their phone on Sunday night. The service person called us immediately and worked with us over the phone enough to know we weren't going to get the furnace running that night. The next day they were at our house very early, had determined it was a problem with the gas line quickly (no intermediate repairs that didn't fix the problem like some service providers), and had an estimator there by noon to provide an estimate and earliest time they could do the work. He also discussed different options like trying to find the gas line leak and repair it. They took care of notifying everyone that needed to know the work was going to be done. They came a day earlier than planned and had the work done in half a day. They then had their plumbing and furnace people check everything to be sure everything was working. They left mud from the excavating, but that was unavoidable. I could not have been happier.
