My initial experience with this company was positive: the office staff were polite, they were flexible with scheduling a time for the estimate, and the estimator arrived on time. However, it went downhill from there. The estimator appeared to be in a hurry, eager to simply measure the perimeter and leave. (It was raining steadily at the time, but I made it clear that he was welcome to come in out of the rain.) I have no prior experience selecting a fence, so I asked the estimator to explain my options. In response, he quickly rattled off two choices, without explaining the pros/cons of each, in contrast to the multiple options shown on the company's website. He also insisted that the existing 3'-4' high chain link fence would have to be removed and that all plants/bushes within two feet of the fence must be torn out. I explained that I would much prefer that the privacy fence simply be installed in front of the chain link fence, and that I did not want to lose all of the plants, but he was unwilling to compromise on either point. He verbally estimated that it would cost at least $1,000 just to complete this tear-down phase. Following his visit, I received the written estimate in a timely manner, but it included the material cost only, no labor cost. In a note accompanying the estimate, he said he was having difficulty estimating the labor cost because of the "conditions" in the yard, apparently referring to the existing fence and the plants, as there are no other adverse conditions (the yard is level, devoid of debris, has well-tended grass, and is not prone to flooding). I have since had another company (from Angie's List) provide an estimate, and had a very positive experience, in stark contrast with Rock Fork Co. I plan to hire the other company, and Rock Fork Co will never receive my business.
