Exteriors Unlimited did original gutter and siding install in 2012. Recently I saw water dripping from behind gutters and called for repair. They showed up unannounced and I came home while they were there. They were on ladder making "repairs" to my garage roof, which is not what I called them about. I informed them the problem I called about was a completely different area of the house and stated if they had notified me they were coming, I could have been there to direct them. I was then told they couldn't fix the area I had called about, because they had to leave for the day. I was told they would come back to fix the part I originally called about but I never heard from them again. I called 4 or 5 times and left voicemails, but none were returned.

In March 2016 I contacted Exteriors to investigate why one of my upstairs windows was allowing water to come into the window and drain down into my drywall. Since this contractor had initially installed the windows that why I contacted them. Jeff McCoy and I discussed the problem, he said it needed maintenance and I had never had any maintenance done on the windows. He suggested that he could drill some holes in the exterior part of the window so the water would drain. He also suggested that the old outside storm windows be removed and the permanent windows could be re-sealed to prevent water from coming inside. At that time I decided to have him install a new bathroom window in the upstairs bath. At this point and during this entire process Mr. McCoy never came inside my house to investigate the problem or measure for the bath window. He said he didn't have the time and didn't need to come in to determine the problem. (Big mistake on my part...trusting that mentality). After multiple trips by McCoy and his workers, the outside storm windows were removed, the the permanent windows were resealed and multiple holes were drilled in the one leaking window. None of this work stopped the water from coming into the inside of the house and getting my dry-wall wet. I paid for this work. I also paid for the bath window and now I find out the measurements they had on file were wrong. I paid $216 for a bath window that is too wide for the opening. Mr McCoy refused to come out to my house to re-measure this bath window and I still had water coming into the one room every single time it rained. I am talking about a lot of water...staying up at night and putting towels in the window to absorb the rain water...this went on since March 2016. Finally I got tired of trying to communicate with Mr McCoy...since he refused to come into my house look at how the window was leaking and remeasuring the bath window opening. I hired another contractor to look at the problem and re-evaluate the leaking window. The new contractor, who is highly regarded in the Cincy area discovered both my upstairs windows were improperly installed. Also, the weep holes had been sealed up and an exterior trim that had been put on the exterior part of the window had prevented the windows from properly draining. Both of the upstairs windows were not installed correctly. The new contractor removed both those windows and the exterior trim, installed new windows and wanted to install the bath window....that was when I found out the bath window was too wide for the opening. I paid $406.00 to them, this included the cost of the window at $216.00 and still had water gushing into my home. Needless to say they don't deserve a good rating. I will never use Exteriors Unlimited again, because of their attitude, lack of follow-through and insulting comments towards me during this process. This company had installed all my windows over the past 20 years, put my siding on and my gutters. I felt that as a repeat customer I would have been treated much better. So now I have a window that I can't sell, can't install and McCoy refuses to admit he made a mistake on any level. I

First of all, I'll mention that this report is NO surprise to me at all. It was an extremely unpleasant experience dealing with this customer. We always do our very best to take good care of our customers, and our reputation, referrals, and positive reports attest to that. We certainly tried to do the same for this customer as well.... obviously to no avail. The report shown here is extremely inaccurate and conveniently missing many of the details. These are the facts involved with this particular situation: The homeowner originally contacted me about some water issues with the 2nd story right side window on 4/27 (not in March). She is correct in saying that we installed the windows for her, but what she didn't mention is that WE INSTALLED THEM IN 1993. THE WINDOWS ARE 23 YEARS OLD and she had not had any issues whatsoever with them for the past 23 years. When she contacted me about the leaking, I told her the windows were 23 years old and that the one she was having trouble with may need to be replaced, but that I would stop out to see what was going on. I did so on 5/3. Nothing was visibly wrong with the windows, there was no sign of deterioration, cracking, warping, or anything else, and there was nothing wrong with her drywall on the interior. I asked her why she had storm windows on the exterior of the windows, when we had installed new double pane vinyl replacement windows for her years ago and they certainly weren't necessary. She said to go ahead and remove them, and I sent two guys out to her house the following week to remove them and re-seal areas where the caulking around the outside of the windows needed to be touched up. The guys also took a look at the interior and exterior of the window she said had issues and couldn't find anything wrong with it other than leaves, dirt, and debris down in the sliding tracks, potentially clogging the weep holes. They cleaned out the tracks as much as they could, and drilled some additional weep holes to help with drainage. None of this had anything to do with improper installation of the windows as she claims in her report, and she certainly would've had problems with the windows prior to 23 years going by if they had been improperly installed. I told her this and she said she wanted the window replaced and was going to call the manufacturer if I didn't, because there was a 30-year warranty on the windows. I explained that the 30-year warranty covers the window materials and guarantees that they won't warp, crack, split, or degrade in that 30-year time period, and that our 5-year workmanship guarantee covers the installation and any issues experienced in that regard. I told her, once again, that it had been 23 years without any issues, and that it looked like the windows had never been cleaned out, and that dirt and debris had built up in between the windows and storm windows and collected inside of the lower tracks of the window. This was a maintenance issue... not any problem with the window or the installation. I explained this to her several times, but it wasn't what she wanted to hear, and she insisted that we replace the window at no charge to her. She proceeded to contact me 2-3 times per week over the next 3-4 weeks insisting that I needed to come back out and look at the window again, and I made 4 more trips out to her house during that time period to caulk some more around the exterior, try to get down into the tracks to clean out more debris, and drill even more weep holes to help with the drainage. She continued to call making threats to report us and take us to court and insisted (again) that we replace the window at our own expense. I finally told her that we had done all that we could do, and that if she didn't want to purchase a new window, there was nothing else we could do for her. She was irate and made several threats about suing us and writing negative reports about us and telling everyone she knew not to do business with us. As far as the rear 2nd story bathroom window is concerned, she had us quote that in 2014 and contacted us prior to these issues to finally have it installed. The window had been ordered and was sitting in our warehouse awaiting installation when the problems with this customer arose, and when I told her that there was nothing more we could do for her, as I mentioned above, she said to forget about installing the bathroom window for her... she would find someone else to do it. I told her that was fine and that I would drop off the window at her house and send her an invoice for the cost of that window and for the caulking and removal of the storm windows. I charged her NOTHING for all of the extra trips out to her house and really just wanted to move on and be done with the whole situation. She contacted me again about 2 weeks later and told me that the window was too wide to fit in the bathroom opening and that the BRICK on the exterior wasn't wide enough to allow the window to pass through. I told her that the bathroom window opening has vinyl siding, aluminum trim, and a storm window on exterior, NOT BRICK, and she suddenly changed her story and went off on another rant about how bad of a company we are. I simply told her that she may want to consider using a different contractor to install the window if they told her it wouldn't fit the opening and hadn't even bothered to remove the aluminum trim and storm window on the exterior first. I could go on and on about this one, but I've wasted enough of my own time on it, and I've now managed to waste the time of anyone else having to read through this lengthy explanation. All I ask is that you please take some of these reports with a grain of salt, and understand that some people are simply unreasonable and will not be satisfied no matter what businesses try to explain to them or do for them. Thanks for the opportunity to respond.

Initially I had a fair quote from them to remove the bottom part of my siding because it went down to the ground but I ended up using another contractor for that task because I had a couple other projects to do too that did not fall within the scope of work that Exteriors Unlimited performs. Anyways I really should have gone with Exteriors Unlimited from the beginning. Sometimes it's just better to use a specialist rather than a general contractor. Jeff was kind enough to come back and finish properly what someone else had started. He is very busy and not so great at answering emails in a timely manner but if you persist it's worth your time. I would definitely use them again.

He was on time and professional and explained everything well. Thank you for the review! This member is correct in stating that it took a while for us to get to the work. The harsh Winter set us back quite a bit to start the Spring, and then we had difficulty finding more quality-minded, reliable help to keep up with the work load.... we're very picky about who we hire to do our work. In the end, everything looked great and we always make sure our projects will continue to look great for years to come. Thanks again for the business!
John showed up prepared with multiple samples, took measurements, and evaluated the job. A few days later we had our quote. Waited for other quotes. After a couple of weeks we called them, changing some of the items, and adding others. A few days later we signed the contract. He would not give a firm start date as he was catching up on other jobs. When the weather cooperated enough for him to start, the folks showed up and got to work. They were there most days by 8:00, and stayed most days to five or later. At least one night past 6:00. They wrapped the house and installed the Cedar Discovery shingle style vinyl siding on the house, Aluminum trim was used over the band boards and used to wrap the windows. We used a standard siding on the garage. They cut soffit vents, re-hung the gutters, and added 2 downspouts, and installed shutters. They were finished in two weeks. Each night they cleaned up before leaving. tldr; Great job, great price. We are very happy.
Description of Work: Wrap and sided house. Costs include an extra $1,500 - $2,000 (I can't remember) for shaker style siding, installed soffit vents, rehung gutters, installed shutters, added downspouts.
We have worked with John and his crew for many years and always with complete satisfaction. They have cared for some rental property as well as our home and I would not even consider having anyone else serve our needs.

I have used Exterior Unlimited for several years to clean my gutters. They have always done a thorough job, including cleaning out the downspouts. I called last November to have the gutters cleaned. They told me it would be about 3 weeks but they did not show up until last Saturday, April 5. This was due to the extremely bad winter we had. I told them I did not want the work done because I just signed a contract for new gutters/covers/downspouts with a different company. In past years they have always been punctual. I think they should have called to confirm the work still needed to be done before sending the men out to do the work (considering they were 5 months overdue).

This customer contacted us about a gutter cleaning in mid-Nov. and we did tell them we'd try to get out within 3-4 weeks to get them taken care of. A week later, the temperatures dropped and it snowed a decent amount. This weather continued through the end of February, into the first week of March. As this customer states, we've always taken care of them very well in the past. We've done work for this customer at least 5 or 6 times and we've always done a good job. To submit a report like this and completely drop us as their service provider because of 3 solid months of ice, snow, and ridiculously cold temperatures is very frustrating to me. I'm not sure what this customer expected us to do when the weather was like that. We couldn't do any gutter work (or much of any other work for that matter) in Dec., Jan,. or Feb. this Winter. The gutters were completely frozen, the roofs were covered with ice and snow, and the majority of the time, the temperatures were below 20 degrees. They were the worst 3 months we've had as a business in many, many years. This customer actually followed up with us over the Winter to see when we would be able to get out to take care of the gutter cleaning, and I apologized for the delay and told them we would not be able to do anything until the weather gave us a chance to do so. Once the weather started to ease up a bit in March, we were able to start getting consistent work done again, but we now had 3 months of backlog to catch up on. We hired additional guys and worked as many hours as we could in March (as we're continuing to do so now) and we were able to get out to their house 4 weeks after the weather broke. When our guys arrived at their house, this customer told them to go away. For this customer to state that we were 5 months overdue is unreasonable and absurd. We did everything within our power to get them taken care of, as we always do.

This report is certainly a surprise to me, considering that this customer recently contacted me to check on the schedule, and I apologized for the delay and told him we'd get him taken care of as soon as we possibly could. I explained that the persistent snow, ice, and sub-freezing temperatures this Winter prevented us from getting much of anything done for 3 solid months and that we were doing our very best to try to catch up on the work for our customers. I guess this was not a good enough explanation for him and he decided to throw some F's and unwarranted negative comments about us on Angie's List as a way to vent his frustrations. As it turns out, the work was already completely taken care of for him before his comments ever posted to Angie’s List. Believe me, no one is more frustrated with the backlog of jobs than I am. The snow, ice, and awful temperatures we’ve experienced this Winter have halted work for many contractors and home builders in our area. We’ve hired additional employees and increased overtime in an attempt to offset delays, but we can only do so much in the short period of decent weather we’ve recently had. Comments stating that we "never showed up" and we're "not a bit reliable" and that we only "want the big dollar jobs" couldn't be further from the truth and I'm pretty upset that they've been posted. At no time did we ever say we weren't coming to do the work, at no time did we make any indication that the job was too small for us, and you can certainly read our other Angie's List reviews and see that we're a reliable company that works hard to make our customers happy. December, January, and February have been the worst 3 months on record for our business in over 20 years. Every other customer we have (several of whom have waited longer than this customer) has been understanding of the fact that we can't control the weather and that when it's really bad, we can't work. I'm not sure what else I can say. It's just disappointing to me that this particular customer decided to use this media as the sound board for their frustration with weather delays. We will continue to provide top quality work and dependable service to our customers, and I hope that one single posting without warrant will not deter people from allowing us the opportunity to work on their homes. Thanks for the opportunity to respond. Jeff McCoy

Jeff was great! II was searching for a company to do all the above work. I had three quotes and when I asked Jeff about the difference in price he was more than happy to explain the costs and the details. We scheduled the work for the end of June beginning of July. Because of the rain we had this summer the work was pushed back by a month. The reason I include this is because Jeff kept me in the loop about the delays the entire time. He even came out and did 2 days of work by himself in 90 degree weather and 1000% humidity. I was very impressed with that. He even took the shutters off so I could repaint them and then put them back on for me. I would use Jeff again and probably will when we need siding.

The wood siding on one upper section of our house was original to our 24 year old house. When we replaced windows in December of 2012 the installers noted that the siding had started to rot. We did not have any water damage and wanted to replace the siding before the siding started to leak. I had 4 contractors look at the job. One told me it was beyond his skill level. I had two give me a quote for vinyl siding and one for Hardee Board. Jeff McCoy from Exteriors Unlimited came out to take a look at our project less than 48 hours after I initially called the company and left a message. Someone from the office contacted me within 2 hours of my initial phone call and they set up a firm time to come out and take a look 2 days later. Jeff showed up on time, got up on the roof to take a look, took measurements, and showed me samples of siding and colors. He emailed me a quote the next day. He was friendly, professional and obviously knew what he was doing. He climbed up and down a ladder like the pro that he is. It was quite obvious that I was going to use Exteriors Unlimited after my very poor and unprofessional experience with the other contractors. I signed the contract and sent a deposit on 5/20/13. I was told it would take six weeks to get the material in and that installation would probably take place the last week in June. Jeff called me late in June to tell me they were behind because of the rain, but that they hadn't forgotten about me. Then he called on July 2nd to tell me they would be at our house first thing on the morning of July 3rd. He worked all day on the 3rd, but didn't get the job finished. So he returned on the 5th to finish. He realized that the vent grate that had been ordered wasn't the correct color. So he installed the incorrect one, ordered a new one in the correct color and installed it 3 weeks later without ever having to bother me. I have already recommended Exteriors Unlimited to a family member. They were exactly what a contractor should be - professional, friendly, informative, timely, easy to deal with, easy to communicate with, used email, had insurance, cleaned up after themselves and were responsible. I would use them again in a heartbeat and would recommend them to anyone.

Jeff McCoy met me at my home and did the measurements for each of the windows I wanted to replace. He informed me of what would be done and explained about the windows, their specifications, quality, and warranty. He said the job would take one to two days and he followed up the next day with a written quote. I scheduled the job to coincide with a kitchen remodel I was doing so I could get everything done at the same time. Jeff's crew was very professional, arriving on time, installing the windows, and removing all debris and cleaning up. The job was completed on time, professionally, and the cost was exactly as quoted. Based on similar work I have had done by other contractors Exteriors Unlimited did an outstanding job. I am very pleased!
Description of Work: Installed nine (9) replacement windows. This was the second half of replacing all of the windows in my house. The first six windows were replaced in March of this year.
