We have an older home (1954) that had little insulation in our attic so we called AIT based upon their great reviews from other Angie's List members and set up an appointment. Mark Schirmer returned our call promptly and we set up a visit to review our needs and concerns. We had been having issues with a cold floor in our bathroom and sun room, which has a basement undeneath , that was not properly sealed on the exterior walls and Mark suggested adding insulation inside along the exterior walls to allievate outside air getting in. After reviewing the quote which we found very fair we decided to schedule the work with AIT. A week or so later two employees came out and completed the work as agreeded upon and both individuals were courteous and professional and actually went above and beyond our expectations. As we have an addition that was added on right over the back of the "old" roof , there was an access panel in our bedroom closet for the "new" addition attic and pull down steps for the "old" house attic access. The workers asked if we would like an access cut in the old roof so we could walk from one area to the other without having to crawl up through our bedroom closet, which was a real pain. Although we didn't need insulation in the "new" addition they sure will make any future work easier to deal with from the pull down steps! We are so pleased with the work Mark and his crew performed that we would not hesitate to recommend AIT to anyone looking for a quality job at a fair rate!! Thanks again Mark!
Description of Work: Added 10" of insulation in the "older" portion of the attic as well as insulated approximately two (2) twelve foot exterior walls in the "newer" basement addition.

Very informative and a great help, but after review I decided to go with a company that installs fiberglass and not cellulose. I am going over existing fiberglass and worried about the weight of cellulose and the breakdown over time.
Description of Work: Came out for a quote and provided details about their product. Showed up quick and provided a lot of great information.

We are sorry that the customer decided to to go with another product. Fiberglass is lighter because air flows thru it causing it to loose R-value during cold weather (cold air is heavier and falls into the fiberglass lowering its effectiveness). It also take considerable more fiberglass to achieve the same R-values. I will install fiberglass if requested, however, there is a more effective, environmentally friendly product I prefer to use. Visit www.regalind.com for more information on comparing the two.

When Mark came to the house, he was the only one (of 3 contacted for quotes) to actually go up into the attic and look around. He noticed a large void from where the stove exhaust most likely was which was letting a lot of heat up in the Winter and pushing a lot of heat down in the Summer. He also looked at my HVAC vents, and suggested a brush on sealer or an appropriate tape (he gave me more details than I remember) for the joints where they leak, and suggested that I cover my hot water pipes, and possibly wrap my water heater. He pointed out all the areas where the house was losing heat or cold. He did not try to pressure me into additional services. He gave me an itemized estimate. On he day of service the workers showed up on-time. They covered the areas where they would be walking, and covered the bed. They added the foam board over the void, blew the insulation, built-up the access area, insulated the cover, and cleaned up. It was one of the best contracting experiences I have had.
Description of Work: Wrap exhaust vent, cover voids, blow insulation, build up sides of access whole to accommodate additional insulation, insulate access cover.

The owner's brother came out in December and looked over the house very thoroughly - he was much more conscientious than other companies we got estimates from. The estimate he drew up was reasonable, and the pitch for their product was good - plenty of information, but not overly pressured.Prior to installation, the company did a good job communicating with me about when they would be there and what they would be doing. When the crew showed up to do the installation, they were on time. They worked efficiently, but asked me questions when they weren't sure what I wanted - which I really appreciated. They clearly tried to do things they way I wanted them - with installation from the inside, not the outside. They cleaned up well when they were done, and were very through. When one part of the job couldn't be completed, they let me know ahead of time, and have offered to come back later on their own time (and expense) to finish it up. Overall, I am very satisfied with the work they did, and the house already seems warmer and more snug.
Description of Work: Insulated the original core of my 1920's era house (which had no insulation in the exterior walls), and bolstered the insulation in the attic and around the band boards in the basement.

Mark Schirmer came to the house to give an estimate near the end of November. He did an extensive two hour inspection of the attic, utility room, and crawl space. The house is old and had very little insulation. He wrote out a detailed estimate and explained the work that needed to be done. I was very impressed with inspection and fairness of his estimate and decided right away to go ahead on it. He said they could start on Friday December 16th and it might extend to Saturday if need be. A crew of five experienced workers came on Friday morning and worked all day to complete everything except the attic. They were all friendly and kepy us informed as to what was going on. They pointed out a few things that we did not know about the house and unclogged the dryer vent that went thru the crawl space. Two of the crew came back on Satuday morning to blow insulation in the attic and constuct a new hatch to the attic. Everything was cleaned up and we were very happy with all the work done.
Description of Work: Removed some existing 24 inch batt insulation because it was the wrong size for the attic. Blew in 12 inces R-44 class 1 fire retardent cellulose insullation in the attic for R-49 value. Framed and made a new plywood hatch for entry to attic and attached insulation. Attached R-19 k insulation to ceiling in a utility room that is being remodeled. Insulated outside walls of house by lifting vinyl siding, drilling 2 1/2 inch holes in each stud cavity, and blowing in cellulose insulation. Extensive insulation in crawl space of home including wrapping air ducts, applying foam insulation to walls, installing R-30 batts under floors. Also installed plastic on dirt floor for moisture control.

They were punctual. The quality of work that was provided was higher than other companies and the clean up was adequate and included in the price. Their price overall was better than the others. All the other companies were within $100 of the price but it was a better value with them. He was the lowest of 3 bidders.

Mark Schirmer, the owner of Advanced Insulation, gave me a quote for adding insulation to my attic spaces. After reviewing quotes from several companies, I decided to use Advanced Insulation and scheduled a Saturday date with Mark more than a month in advance. One week prior to the agreed upon date, Mark called to inform me that I would need to reschedule as he had a Dentist who needed my time slot. I informed Mark that due to family commitments and the holidays, rescheduling was not an option for me. Mark’s unprofessionalism really became apparent after this and I ended up firing him over the phone before any work was completed. I would not recommend using Mark or Advanced Insulation for any residential or commercial purposes.
Description of Work: Mark Shirmer, owner of Advanced Insulation, provided me with a quotation to insulate my attic spaces. However, after scheduling a day for the work to be completed, I had to fire Mark before work could begin due to his unprofessionalism.

The customer said I would only be able to do his insulation on Saturdays and emailed me two dates that would work for him. I told him I usually don't schedule Saturdays because my installers are working 10 hr. days this time of year and I reserve Saturdays for completing jobs that we may not have had enough time to complete during the week. However, he said Saturdays are the only time we could do it and we scheduled on of those dates. When materials I ordered for another customer failed to arrive to complete his job before he left for Florida for the winter, I moved the customer into the alternate date he gave me so I could finish the work for the customer that was leaving town. I called to ask him if that was OK. Before I could finish talking he became very nasty and was yelling at me about giving his date away. I tried several times to explain that I would get his job done by asking another crew if they would work Saturday, but he wasn't listening. When he told me I was fired, I didn't argue.

I contacted Mark for an estimate to add insulation over my attached garage. He said he would come do that, but would also assess the state of my existing insulation throughout the house. On inspection he found several areas needing additional insulation due to settling and one area having no insulation at all. He even discovered that one of my bathroom exhaust fans was not vented outside. In touring the house, Mark made recommendations on many small fixes I could make myself. In the end I contracted Mark to blow in cellulose over the garage, add cellulose to several areas, repair batt insulation in some areas, dust the unvented fan, spray foam joist ends in the basement and insulate the exterior walls of the garage. Mark's crew was courteous, knowledgeable, professional and on time. I highly recommend this company. In fact I've already given their website to a coworker.

excellent. Duke Energy evaluated our home energy efficiency and recommended addiing insulation. Advanced Insulation upgraded the insulation in our attic, from R 19 to R49. Advanced Ins. gave a very through inspection and estimate; much more thorough and a bit lower in price than a competitor. They were very professional in their work and clean-up. I expect to see benefits in my energy bill this winter.

We have a 1 1/2 story home with a family room and 2nd master upstairs. We were having trouble adequately cooling the upstairs in the summer. Our attic is large and complex so it was a fairly big job. They arrived on time and performed the job with no problems. It has made a substantial difference with the added insulation, etc. I'm guessing we're at least 4 degrees or so cooler on the 2nd floor plus our first floor kitchen is cooler as they added insulation over the vaulted ceiling there. We're very happy with the results and would not hesitate to recommend Mark and his crew at Advanced Insulation.
Description of Work: Applied cellulose insulation to all attic areas and repaired fiberglass batts, applied radiant barrier to one wall and applied mastic to voids and gaps in cold air returns in the basement.

mark came out and evaluated a home that i am doing renovations on. he made some recommendations and gave me a quote for insulating the attic, blowing in insulation in the walls, and replacement windows. he was knowledgeable and passionate about energy savings. i ended up getting a few quotes and advanced insulation was competitive with the other contractors, but I appreciated the extra time and interest he took in my house. i ended up using advanced insulation to insulate my entire attic. there wasn't a stitch of insulation up there that we could find!his team of installers showed up on time and worked until about 6.30 to finish the job. good experience and i have already recommended them to a couple friends.

We picked them up from Angie’s List. They completed the job timely and they cleaned up after themselves. We had an issue with them, but they did resolve it timely. I was at a time crunch to get it done whenever they were giving me something back and they were able to make the time crunch for me to get that back. I don’t think they gouged and I think it was a fair price. They gave us a little bit of grace when we had the issue, but it wasn’t much. They did cover the cost. They are a little company. Our house is very warm now. They were very responsive and nice.

First the headline: An employee from Advanced Insulation stole over $3000.00 worth of my wife?s jewelry! That was only the worst part of what was to be a completely horrible experience with this company. They ?did- show up on time, it just went downhill from there. They drilled 14 extra holes in a wall that was not to be insulated in the first place. The holes and access panel that they cut were so poorly patched that I had to redo them all. They dismantled a window in our bedroom to run a hose up from the truck. That window was reassembled incorrectly and now no longer stays up. There was expanding foam insulation dripped all over ?everything- in the basement. It was all over our clothes in the laundry, tools, lawn mower, snow blower, boxes etc. That stuff doesn?t wash out by the way. And here is the biggie: One of their workers stole several very expensive and sentimental pieces of jewelry. I spoke with the owner after all this went down and he explained that the probable culprit was ?Some Guy that Lives Over the Shop?. Really? I think it goes deeper than that. Yes, it was ?Some Guy? that stole from us. But, your ?20 year veteran supervisor? was the one that left ?Some Guy? in our house unsupervised. And it was the owner that hired ?Some Guy? to work there in the first place; apparently without being remotely qualified or bonded. The owner offered to ?pay my deductible?. What? A worker representing your company rips us off, and you offer to pay my deductible? Why don?t you hit me in the face with a brick and complete the experience for me? Our insurance covered a fraction of the replacement cost of the jewelry, but that is a review for another day. The icing on the cake was a couple of weeks later when the owner called me and asked if they could come back out and finish the wall patching. I politely declined, while thinking ?I don?t want you or anyone from your company anywhere near my house again!? Needless to say, it will take several hundred years of energy savings to recover our expenses for this job. The bottom line it this? -Avoid this company like weapons grade plutonium-! Update - My reply to AIT. The detectives involved in both investigations firmly believed that the items were stolen by your employee. You, yourself told me that you believed this kid took the jewelry. You were the one that told me about the kid in the first place. There is a reason that polygraph tests are inadmissible in court. They are unreliable. An accomplished liar can fool a polygraph test easily. Yes, we could have allowed more of your employees into our home to fix all the mess and problems you left. But, we really don?t want to have anything to do with anyone else from your company. And we certainly don?t want them in our house. I stand firmly by my review.
Description of Work: They blew in cellulose insulation in the attic spaces, along with some fiberglass batting in a closet. They also used expanding foam insulation to seal the basement.

As the owner of the company, I iniatiated an investigation by the police dept. as soon as I was informed something was missing. I furnished the investigator the names and addresses of anyone that worked on their insulation project, including myself. Interviews were conducted with everyone and in one case a lie detector test was given with a negative result. I was determined by the investigator that there was no evidence that we were responsible for anything missing. The customer then filed a claim with their insurance company and another investigation took place. The results were the same findings as the detective. We take great pride in our reputation. We have over 16 reports on Angie's list with an A in Quality and hundreds of installations without a complaint. Although we are confident we are not responsible if anything was missing, I tried everything I could to make the customer happy, offering to come back and do some finish patching (usually done by their painter) and even offered to cover a deductable but I never heard back from them. It's been almost a year and this is the first I've heard about any mess or problem with a window.

I found Advanced Insulation to be professional, thorough, friendly and economical. They took care of a nasty job that I didn't have the time or the expertise to handle myself.
Description of Work: I discovered a sealed off attic in our "new" 1900 era house and installed a folding stairway for access. There was no insulation of any kind...or skeletons either. I made several calls and received a few estimates. Some of the estimates were extremely high and the estimator didn't even bother to look in the attic! Mark and crew blew in insulation in the full attic and sprayed foam around any basement wall joists that were available. They also insulated several of the eaves in the gambrell style roof and installed access vents.

Called about a week ago for an estimate to have our attic insulated. Mark came out on 4/1111 to give an estimate. He climbed in the attic and did a very thorough inspection to determine what was needed for our attic to have an R49 value. He pointed out several areas that were problems: bath fans needed to be vented to ridge vents(were currently vented to soffits); areas where insulation was moved away when cable, electric work was done and left open; areas that needed to be filled with foam to prevent heat loss; we had several areas that had very little insulation. We were very impressed with how much time he spent checking out the attic to prepare our estimate. We did have another estimate done by someone else, but decided to go with Advanced Insulation due to price and the attic inspection. 4/15/11 Insulation day...workers showed up and laid blankets and plastic on floors to protect them from dirt, etc. Looked at all the areas and located fans to see what & where work was to be done. Foam sealed the openings in the attic and outlet, cut the accesses into the bonus room kneewalls; secured all the batting on the bonus room knee walls that had fallen and then proceeded to blow in the insulation in the attic and then the kneewalls. They insulated the access openings with batt insulation and then installed an alum grill for future access. They secured batt insulation onto our hatch opening and also added weatherstripping around the hatch opening for a better seal. The job went very well. They cleaned up after themselves and vacuumed all areas. Very impressed and would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: In main attic: Re-positioned bath fan exhausts to ridge vents (were incorrectly vented to soffits by builder) Foam sealed any visible openings (bath fan & ceiling fan housings, electrical, etc) Added soffit baffles where needed Blow in R30 Cellulose insulation over existing 10" loose fiberglass for new R49 Bonus Room: Cut accesses into bonus room kneewalls to fill with insulation and secure batt insulation that had fallen off walls. Insulated a wall to a bedroom through the kneewall that had no insulation Insulated access opening and covered with alum grill for future access Can foamed outlet in 1 bedroom on exterior wall

I'm sorry that I do not remember this customer. We do offer 2-part expanding foam that is used in many insulation applications, however there are some applications where foam is not cost efficient or cannot be used.due to deterioration if exposure to the elements and we do not recommend it.. Foam is best used for air sealing cavities such as joist ends, open wall cavities, cracks and voids (bi-passes), foundation walls (concrete and block) and sealing roof cavities before installting fiberglass or cotton fiber batts or radiant barrier.

They did a good job. They did some additional things that I asked them to do without charging me. Their price was comparable, but upon talking to them I thought that they will do a better job. The person who inspected it gave more ideas and they gave me a very quick appointment. I wanted it done in December to take advantage of the tax benefit and they accommodated me. The job cost more than original estimate because other issues were discovered; however, felt price was fair. Mark went up in the attic and took pictures; would have been nice to have pictures of the job after completed. Used tarps to protect carpet and made sure to vacuum before leaving; some mud and insulation dust was left behind but came up easily. Andy and Rick were excellent workers and very professional at all times. A follow-up call would have been nice from Mark after job was completed, but overall experience was excellent! Thanks.

We received a quote from Mark with Advanced Insulation. The price quote was in the middle of 3 quotes we received. He went into the attic, took pictures of areas that needed attention, explained the materials that would be used etc. To get ready/prep work for the insulation took longer than anticipated. We are pleased with the result and would recommend Advanced Insulation & Energy Technologies. Since the visit we have discovered that our furnace will need to be replaced and I was concerned about someone going back into the attic and disturbing the insulation. I called Mark and have been assured that if we have any concerns after the furnace replacement, he will come out and if necessary blow insulation to areas that may need attention.
Description of Work: We had insulation blown into the attic.
