It's been four months now, and there has been no further correspondence or follow-up. I expected to receive a summary report of findings, and a list of suggested home energy improvements with estimated labor/materials costs. This was never received. In hindsight, it would have been just as well to rent/purchase my own thermal imaging device and do a self-assessment. Sadly, I feel that overall this was money not well spent.
Description of Work: I paid for a whole house energy audit via A.I.T. However, a subcontractor-- Home Energy Services-- showed up. Jerry Tarantino, a former building contractor, was friendly. He looked at the furnace and determined the appropriate air flow the system required, and suggested that we leave the utility room door open. He also brought a thermal imaging device to scan walls, floors, and ceilings to illustrate heat loss. He even scanned attic for potential heat loss problem areas.

This is the first I've heard from [member name removed] about my contractor not following up with him. This was during the time that we sold out of the $99 energy audits and I subcontracted several of my audits to a very capable auditor from the Cinti Energy Alliance. He experienced heart problems and was hospitalized several times during this period. I apologize for any lack of follow up.

I can clearly see why this company is A rated! After calling Advanced Insulation & Energy Technologies, they took my information and was contacted by Rick, their estimator. He set up an appointment with me a few days later. He was very prompt, even arriving a little early for the appointment, was very detailed in his assessment of my insulation needs and even pointed out areas which I did was not aware needed insulation, such as around the can lights, basement sill plates and skylight tubes/shafts. After receiving their e-mail estimate and two other companies' bids, I chose Advanced Insulation & Energy Technologies. They were the only ones who took the extra time to explain what they would do in detail, address all my concerns, and suggest other areas of my home that would benefit from insulation. I accepted their bid and called Rick who set up an 9 to 9:30 appointment on the following Friday. On Friday, 9:30 came and went, no crew showed up. I called the office and was told that I was not on their schedule for that day. I was asked to hold on a moment and then was promptly put through to Mike, the owner, who apologized for the oversight. Fortunately, another customer had canceled their appointment for the day and he then rerouted the crew to my home. In addition, for my inconvenience, he deducted the price of the plywood overlay for the foam board on my bow bay window. An hour and a half later the crew arrived . They were very polite, and went right to work. About an hour later, they pointed out a loose vent pipe in my attic and told me that they would mound the insulation to either side of it until I could get a plumber in to fix it. They then blew in 8? of new cellulose insulation in my attic, placed cones around my can lights, insulated two skylight tubes, and attached a rigid foam insulation to the bottom of my bow bay window all within a two hour time frame. When they finished, they cleaned up the area and thanked me for choosing their company. It was a pleasure to do business with them and I highly recommend their services.
Description of Work: Add 8” of new cellulose insulation in my attic, placed cones around my can lights (keeps lights from overheating and burning out early), insulated two skylight tubes/shaft, and attaching a rigid foam insulation to the bottom of my bow bay window.

I asked them to come because we had a child's bedroom above a garage that was always very cold. The carpet in that room was extremely cold to walk on so i knew there was an issue with the builder's job in insulating that room.Turns out, once they got behind the knee wall, there was a large gap between the batts of insulation and the actual floor, so the cold air was running right underneath the floor above the insulation. They dense packed 15 bags of cellulose across the floor from the kneewall and then tightly sealed the entry area. Added cellulose in the attic above the bedroom and the unfinished area above the garage. Also added some radiant barrier in a few areas at no extra charge. What a difference! It is huge. The room is MUCH warmer now, thank you!! The only issue is the dense packing knocked a wire loose to the garage door opener, but they came out and fixed that the next day in no time flat. Thanks again!

So while I learned a lot from his expertise and knowledge, his follow through was extremely poor.
Description of Work: This person loves his work--very enthusiastic and very knowledgeable, he seemed. He did an energy audit of my entire house, which we needed since we figured we needed attic insulation, which we had none of in our 100-year-old-house. He was knowledgeable, yes. But he didn't submit the promised "report" of our audit, and when he did, after several phone calls, he was very apologetic and polite. But when he did submit it it was notes, poorly thought out, not really intended to be helpful, and not at all the amount of stuff he was telling me about as we walked through the basement and looked up in the attic. It seemed clear he was hoping to be used as to do our insulation, rather than focused on the energy audit itself. Even that, I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and asked him to submit a bid for the attic insulation. Here too it took a very long time to get the bid from him,k though agian he was very polite about it. I also did some reserach and found out that he recommended a "blanket" for our hot water heater, even though it didn't need it--since it wasn't warm to the touch, therefore another layer of insulation would not have helped a bit.

I purchased the Big Deal offer in on October 3rd and on the 9th I received an email from the sub contractor (Jerry) that AIT had arranged to perform the audits telling me he would be getting in touch with me. I probably should have started worrying when I heard that AIT had subbed the job out to another company. A week or so later, Jerry called wanting to set up an appointment. We had some unexpected family health issues at the time and I asked if it would be ok to postpone two weeks or so. Jerry told me to contact him when we were ready to proceed. On November 8th, I replied to Jerry's original email (I didn't have his phone number) asking him to call me so we could schedule an appointment. I also copied AIT on this email. After waiting about two weeks without a reply from either party, I called AIT insulation and told them I was having problems contacting Jerry and they provided me with his phone number. I called Jerry and left a message on the 27th and finally connected up with him on Dec. 4. He apologized and informed me that it had been very busy in the fall and that he was currently recovering from some medical issues himself. He asked if I could wait a few weeks. Having recently had some family medical issues myself, I said no problem and we agreed that I would call him after the Christmas holidays to schedule. On January 8th, I called him again and we scheduled an appointment for the following week for the afternoon of the 17th. As Jerry was at a job at the time, he asked me to send an email to his company's email confirming the details to get it on his calendar. I sent the email and that evening he replied that he received it. I made arrangements to work from home of the 17th, but Jerry was a no-show. When I called his number that afternoon he was at another job. He apologized again, unsure how my appointment didn't make it onto his calendar. He offered to come whenever it was convenient for me. We agreed on the following Monday at noon. On that Sunday afternoon, I came home to a call on my answering machine from Jerry stating that he'd had to leave town for a few days and wouldn't be able to make the next day's appointment. He requested that I call him at the end of the week to reschedule. At this point enough was enough and I contacted Angie's List regarding a refund of my Big Deal purchase. Angie's List was great and I had no problems with them getting my refund. They offered to mediate with the company for me, but at this point I wanted nothing further to do with them. The obvious followup to the audit is that it will make improvement recommendations (that AIT would likely be able to address), but the trust factor is no longer there and the effort would be a dead end from my view point. I will likely find another company on Angie's List to perform an audit in the future. I thought long and hard about whether I should write this review for AIT or the actual energy audit company that Jerry runs. In the end I decided on AIT because it was AIT selling the "Big Deal" and advertising in the offer that their award winning company was performing the audits. I thought I was hiring the well-reviewed AIT to do the work when I made my purchase. They either oversold their capacity (requiring the use of sub contractors) or they planned on subbing things out to begin with which borders on false advertising in my opinion. Either way, they were responsible for how the job played out and they "own" the review.
Description of Work: Purchased an Angie's List Big Deal offer for a home energy audit for $99. I understood at the time that my home was larger than the square footage covered by the offer and would need to pay an additional $100 for the audit when it was performed.

Since the work was completed less than a month ago, I do not have any Duke Energy data to determine if the insulation work has resulted in less energy usage. However, I do feel that the house is warmer and I have not had my thermostat set as high as I have in the past. I was very satisfied with all the work completed. The only drawback was that since I have plaster walls, they needed to apply the foam insulation from the interior of the home as opposed to the exterior brick walls. Therefore I have additional work to complete to paint the walls that were patched after the work was completed. This inconvenience was not significant enough that I would not have had the work completed. AIT and Home Energy Services were very responsive to questions I had during the process. Overall I am very happy and satisfied with the work. I would highly recommend AIT and Home Energy Services.
Description of Work: I initially had an energy audit completed and found that I had an excess of air flow through my walls an attic due to insufficient insulation. The energy audit was performed by Home Energy Services who partners with AIT for services. I have a Cape Cod home and was aware that it lacked insulation in the outer walls. I was amazed how much air flow was occurring when they performed an air flow test to measure the amount. I had AIT blow foam insulation into the outer walls of my home and Home Energy Services completed the insulation of the attic and sealing areas in the attic and basement. After the work was completed, a quality assurance auditor from the Greater Cincinnati Energy Alliance was in and inspected the work. Repeat air flow tests indicated that I have a 36% reduction of air flow as a result of the improved insulation.

Excellent work. My only complaint is that they were late on the day to perform the work, because of a no-show of one of their workers, and no one called to explain.
Description of Work: First, Mark did an insulation energy audit to see where we could seal up the house & the level of exising insulation. He gave me a very reasonable quote for the work. They came back & (1) foamed the joint between the foundation & the house, (2) sealed leaks in the duct work, and (3) added cellulose insulation in the attic to bring it to an R39 value.

Mark performed the energy audit. As he did the audit, he explained what he was checking and made recommendations for improvements. During the audit he didn't seem to be making notes for a report, but a friend of mine was there and took some notes for me -- Some of the improvments were simple fixes I could easily do myself. Three were more involved (attic insulation, insulation in a small unfinished basement storage area, and tearing out drywall ceiling in the garage/properly installing new installation/ replacing the drywall). I told him that I would like separate estimates for each of those projects, and my #1 priority would be the unfinished basement area since that was the source of an uncomfortably cold spot in my living area, #2 was the attic insulation, and that I was unsure about the garage insulation depending on what the total cost would be. He was very personable, and seemed eager to provide an estimate. A week or two later he emailed me and said he would be happy to provide a quote but did not have all of the measurements for the attic space and asked if I could send them. I replied that I would get those attic measurements to him, and also reiterated my request for separate estimates for each project (thinking he may have forgotten since I had told him that verbally during the audit). I sent him the measurements 2 weeks later, but never heard back from him. Four weeks after I sent the attic measurements, I sent a follow up email -- still did not get a reply. I thought the audit was interesting and he seemed knowledgeable -- and I was really thinking I'd hire them for at least the one project, but it seems like the business is not well organized since they did not ever send me an estimate.

It was during this week that my brother-in-law was hospitalized and had an operation for stage 4 brain cancer. My wife and I were out of town most of the following weeks and with large number of Angie's energy audits and reports as well as the other things put on hold while I was gone, this one was overlooked. I don't recall receiving an email with the measurements that she was sending but there were a large number of emails for me to go through upon my return. A phone call to my cell phone or office from the customer would have resulted in a prompt report via email, however, this is the first time I have been made aware of the over sight. As an update, my brother-in-law is currently receiving chemo and radiation and our prayers are with him.

Mark is a true professional. There was certainly some problems involved, as we were having other work done, and Mark had to work around the schedule of the other company--which certainly wasn't easy. However, he did everything in his power to make the experience less frustrating for us. His crew were very reliable, courteous, and we couldn't have asked for a better company to perform the work. Because of a few omissions, he was most gracious in sending a man back, and all the work was done to our satisfaction. I would highly recommend Mark and his company, especially if you are having insulation done on an older house. Ours is well over one hundred years old, and the men seemed to handle well all the unexpected problems that presented themselves, as usually happens in houses of this age. Our experience after the work was performed proved the worthiness of the company, and the warmness of the house these winter days proves a job well done!
Description of Work: We have a 117 year old house, and were planning to have siding put on. We thought since the house had insulation in only a few rooms, we would do the insulation of the whole house, prior to the siding. Unfortunately, the second floor of the house had asbestos shingles, so only the first floor could be done from the outside, but the upstairs had to be done from the inside walls. The men were most careful of furniture, and cleaned up after the work was done.

Description of Work: Mark Schirmer is an excellent resource for both insulation and windows. We had insulation blown into the walls of our 105+ year old house in December of 2009 and Mark took a lot of time to explain how airflow works and to show me some hidden areas that we didn't even know needed insulation like under the bathroom that was a late add-on and was always freezing. In February or so we then spent about $14000 on new windows for the entire house and his advice and installers were excellent. Between those two services we immediately began saving $180 per month on our gas/electric during the winter months. I recently contacted him regarding a tiny additional bathroom window I have decided to replace, a very small job, and he was out to measure within 36 hours. Excellent service.

We paid $100 for an energy audit. We feel it was just a way to generate a quote for insulation. The information was somewhat useful. The review did not include any appliance "audit". In the end we feel we paid $100 to get an insulation quote which we could have requested and it would have been provided for no payment. Our expectations were not fulfiled.

We are sorry you don't feel you received value for the mini audit. On a typical estimate, we would normally not provide thermal imaging with at $4500 camera point out areas where air is infiltrating the home, looking at door weatherstripping, windows, etc, .The $99 charge is to cover the cost of the equipment and the additional time spent in the home. A phone call to allow us to meet your expections would have been appreciated. Of course, Angie's List clients are always welcome to a refund. If you would prefer, I would take twice the audit cost off your insulation if that would help.

It is our policy to give credit for the $99 spent on the energy audit if the customer decides to use us for their energy upgrades. Most clients ask us to give them an estimate of the costs once the audit is completed to compare estimates, so we now email it to them. We have called the Customer to apologize if we failed to tell her about the credit.

The contractor showed up on time and the person leading the audit was knowledgeable and professional. I accompanied the contractor during the entire audit and showed me the thermal images and explained what was going on. I learned quite a bit about where I needed some additional insulation in the knee walls of my house. I also saw the air leaks in my recessed lighting. The assessment of the insulation in the attic was almost an afterthought. Overall I thought the audit was well worth the $99.00. I was disappointed with the quote I received from AIT for the corrections based on the energy audit. I considered the $8,000 quote to be excessive given the size of my house. In fairness, however, I have not pursued any other quotes to see if these prices are in line with what other companies charge.
Description of Work: The company performed an energy audit as part of an Angie's list promotion. They used another contractor because of the overwhelming response of the promotion. I, therefore, have no direct experience with AIT. The contractor put a fan on the front door and checked for air leaks using a thermal imaging camera and made a very quick assessment of the level of insulation in the attic. All of the results were documented a report along with suggested corrections. AIT provided a quote for correction of the recommendations in the report.

AIT installed blown cellulose in my attic, including two cathedral ceiling areas and above the garage. The initial estimate was thorough and Mark took the time to review the whole house's insulation, not just the attic. He made several recommendations, including some improvements that I was able to do myself. When the crew came a couple weeks later they took time to discuss the job with me before starting and paid careful attention to my concerns, especially one room that was consistently colder than the others. A short while later they identified a hidden area in the attic which was poorly insulated and right above our cold room! They ultimately cut through a temporary panel board that was left over from construction and re-insulated the space. By the time they were finished they had installed more insulation than quoted, but did not charge any extra for the job. They were clean and left almost no dust behind. This were one of the more expensive companies I contacted, but their service turned out to be well worth it. I'm glad I chose AIT.
