Hurd Home Services is a Whole Home Improvement Restoration Co. We Restore and Remodel Homes and also offer our services to the Commercial Sector. Our services offered include floors to ceilings and everything in between. We specialize in carpentry, drywall, painting/staining, hard surface flooring. We do Interior and Exterior work all year round.
Contacted the provider (Hurd via phone; (it was a guy) said that he was booked up for the next 3 months and left it at that. He seemed frustrated and a little mean so I did not ask any further questions from him. He actually sounded arrogant and uncaring not good qualities for someone to be rated on Angies list. Because of the tone of his voice which was rude makes it seem that he also needs to be more realistic when booking his customers/clients, so that he don't over whelm himself and take his frustrations out on callers. Surely, I would not refer him to any one: For those who care - even if he does the job well, he lacks the standards of professional ethics and demeanor that inquirers deserve; you see he could find a better way to say that he's all BOOKED UP. And it makes me wonder if he is cutting corners to hurry thru the jobs that he already has scheduled.
Description of Work: Rudely denied me an appointment for an estimate.

A. I don't recall this potential customer interaction but this must have deeply effected this person to write a report 6 months later instead of right away when it happened. I guess my question is - why such a long wait? We treat all of our customer and potential customers with respect. B. We don't cut "corners" (as our record shows), and we schedule accordingly. One thing I have learned being in business is that we can't please everyone all the time but we sure do try our best to do so.

The job went extremely well. It was a promotional offer sent by Angie's List via email. Our house needed to be pressure washed and we intended to do it ourselves, but the offer was so good, we decided to try this contractor. We got a very timely response from the Hurd Home Services, set a date in the future for the job to be done. The contractor arrived on time the day of the job, and proceeded pressure washing the exterior of our home, completing the job in a timely professional manner. We were very pleased and would hire Hurd Home Services for future projects.

Everything went awesome. Joe and his partner did seemingly perfect work. He even noticed a few code violations with my electric outlets and fixed them at no additional charge. The job took a day or two longer than expected, but that was because it took things longer to dry than anticipated as the basement is very humid (no thanks to Buckeye Waterproofing). Job was top notch, and they actually left my basement cleaner than then how it was when they arrived. I have some other jobs on the horizon and will certainly consider Joe/Hurd Home Services when the time comes. Definitely recommend them with no hesitation.
Description of Work: Had them rebuild studs and install and paint drywall. Our foundation walls were bowed, so getting the drywall to come out straight was no small task. Joe also allowed me to do all the demo work in advance and use many of my own materials I had on hand. Joe explained to me the challenges of bowed walls, and the options for dealing with them.

On first contact, he said he could be out in a few days but want extra time because of the rush hour traffic (Euclid to Strongsville). I agreed, and extended it an extra hour to give him more time (7 p.m.). On appointment day, I drove over to the house in need of repair and waited. Finally, he voice-mailed me and said that he decided he had enough work and didn't really want the job...good luck.... Ok, I called him back and asked why he agreed in the first place, and secondly, why wait thru the following days until the last less than an hour to notify me. He told be his voice mail at the last minute, so to speak, should be considered a courtesy to me...A COURTESY??? He now changed his story to say that once he saw that there were two accidents between him and my location on his GPS, he knew it would take 1-2 additional hours to get to me (by the way, can't GPS's re-route to avoid accidents and back-ups???) and he should have voice-mailed to re-schedule. He then hung up on me. Now, to be clear, I have no idea what kind of work this company does, but as long as I have been a member of Angie's List, I have never, nor will I ever do business with a company who gives insight into how much they take care of their customers by the examples of courtesy they show in this manner. His Angie's info says he works Cuyahoga county. His call said he would be out. His voice-mail said he just decided he didn't want the job. But all of his actions point to untrustworthy. '
Description of Work: He made an appointment to do an estimate, and I adjusted the time for his convenience so that he wouldn't have to drive thru rush hour traffic. I drove to the address and waited, but 49 minutes before the appointment, he called and left a voice mail (which I saved) saying he had decided he had enough work and no longer wanted the job. Read on for the details.

We purchased a Big Deal - $169 Home Exterior Pressure-Washing. We were told it would probably take less than three hours and they were right on. This was the first time we had ever done this and were not disappointed. Our aluminum sided house had two areas that were particularly dirty and when they were done, our house almost looked as though it had been painted! They even pointed out a few windows that needed recaulking which they said we could do ourselves. All in all, we are very pleased with the work done by Hurd Home Services.

He was great. He had to rip up entire floor and and replace sub-floor underneath. He then installed new tile in the area. He also flipped the location of our oven and refrigerator. They are in much more convenient locations now. The grease was from the oven was splashing onto our blinds and windows and itt was such a mess.

This was our third time contracting with Joe and he did an amazing job as always! He gutted the whole bathroom, replaced our poorly installed subfloor and installed new flooring. He updated all of our bathroom pieces and built a custom deep shelving unit next to our newly installed soaker tub and new tile. In our experience, his work has always been impeccable and very professional. Joe is also gifted at design and has given great advice. Joe will always be our first call when it comes to updates in our home.

The entire process went smoothly and very efficiently. Both Joe and his crew were very professional and courteous. Joe gave us advice about several things that we were going to have to do in the future. He also took time to fix the framing of the ceiling in the kitchen and in the bathroom that was uneven due to old damage. Every night they would clean up and leave the rooms like they were never even there. They finished the job in a timely manner and we are very, very pleased with the work that was done. We will definitely call Joe for future projects.
Description of Work: We were in the process of renovating our kitchen and bathroom due to water damage. We asked Joe to come and dry wall the kitchen ceiling and the entire bathroom. We did all the demo of the existing drywall and rebuilt the frame for the bathtub. Joe estimated a week of work to install the drywall, tape, mud and sand in both rooms. He also added texture to the ceilings.

Superb! Excellent! Highest quality we could have asked for. Joe & his crew were professional, on time, extremely neat, cleaned up every night, worked long hours, and accommodated every request we had. For example, we wanted to use green drywall & stop above the floor, in case of another flood. Joe listened, made suggestions, and then did an excellent job. I cannot say enough good things about the high quality of work provided.

Just very arrogant from the get go. I asked him what was his specialty. He said remodeling with kind of a tone. I wanted to make sure he was coming to look at the right item because I had alot going on. That was fine but then he started to look at the floor and proceeded to tell me that there was nothing wrong with the floor. Then he tells me it was installed inproperly. I am aware of all of that now. He went on and on about what shouldn't have occurred. This was a very expensive wood, it's more high-end wood and tells me the wood I had was the wrong wood to use. He went into all that I needed but I'm not putting in a floor and asked him to write all that up for me. told him what kind of floor i had. said we don't allow our customers to get their own supplies. I told him what the situation was with getting everything that the other contractor told me to get. I don't know anything about flooring and he made me feel uncomfortable. His whole tone and attitude was poor. He made me feel bad for not getting the right thing and it made me uneasy, all I wanted to know was what I needed to do and some recommendations. Instead I felt like I was being persecuted for not knowing much about flooring. Then he just up and left and wouldn't even get me a quote. He told me this wasn't going to work out but I pretty much figured that out the first 10 minutes of meeting him. He was unhelpful and arrogant. I hired someone previously thinking they knew what they were doing and he did not make me feel any better about the situation. I just felt very irritated and frustrated. I felt like I didn't need to have someone come in here and treat me poorly when I was just asking for his help to get the problem resolved.
Description of Work: He came to give me an estimate. I needed a written evaluation and estimate. I drove all the way from youngstown to meet him and get assistance with my flooring.

This potential customer was pushy from the get go. She called several times (with in minutes of each other) to get a quote and looking back on it now should have raised a red flag with me because each call had an irritated angry undertone to it. I called back to set up a quote but when she was on the phone with me she did nothing but complain about the other contractor she hired previously, I explained to her that was in the past and that we would meet to resolve her previous flooring issues. 1.This person has anger issues. When I arrived she drilled me on my experience and specialty in construction in a hostile manner, comparing me to the previous contractor telling me that they lied to her and that I could also be lying to her. When I Tried to explain a bit about the company history and portfolio she cut me off and started ranting about the previous contractor again. She told me her floor was ruined and I explained it wasn't ruined just installed incorrectly, she got much more angry. I then Tried to explain how to proceed with solving the situation by giving a quick walk through of what needed to be done, again I was cut off within seconds and met with angry rants about the other contractor and materials. I explained to her that we usually pick up the materials because we are the Professionals and know what we need for the project we undertake, this set her off and she went on another Angry Rant. When she was done I told her that she was Too Hostile to work with and that I was not interested in the project but wished her luck, her response was "Your not gonna write down what I need now! How long have you been doing this!! Your arrogant!! Your not gonna give me what I need!". She also kept screaming at me as I walked out and to my car then slammed the door. 2.The fact that this potential customer has the nerve to act like as she did and then play the victim is just not right. I can see why there were issues with the contractor if they were treated like this in any way. 3. It was apparent that this person did not want resolution they wanted to vent within the first 30 seconds of interaction. 4. Hostility will not be tolerated.

We were very excited about working with Joe. We did our homework and called every reference he gave us and he got glowing remarks from everyone. We were willing to wait for him thinking it was a good sign he was busy and highly recommended. Yes, our job was a challenging job--we had just put in new wood floors when we discovered our wall issue. Joe knew this as he had been out on two occasions-one to estimate the job and a second to reconvene before work started. Nothing had changed at our home since our first meeting and estimate. We waited two months for Joe, and on the day that work was to begin, he told us he wouldn't do the job. We were stunned. He decided on the day that work was to begin that he didn't want to risk damaging our floors or lighting (he didn't want to replace anything his guys might damage). I believe my husband made the mistake of sharing a story regarding a contractor we had a lousy experience with, but Joe had made us feel confident we were in good hands. He had our $5600 deposit so he must have believed he could do the job initially. To his credit, he went to the bank and got us a cashier's check to refund our money within a half hour and did apologize several times. The bottom line is that even if Joe is the most amazing contractor out there, this is still a really unprofessional and unacceptable way to do business. What happened, did he find a better paying job for the same period of time? And why do contractors get to walk away from a signed contract? We couldn't have done the same without financial consequences. I will never put 50% down again. Joe also requires additional payments throughout the contractual period so that when the job is done you have paid the full bill with no recourse if the work is not acceptable. That may be fine if your job is a small job, but an $11K job is a pretty big job to gamble with. Again, I'm sure Joe does beautiful work or he wouldn't get the recommendations, but I'd prefer to work with a contractor who stands behind his commitment and fulfills a contract as promised. We had to start all over to find someone new and are now waiting to start our project end of September because of Joe--very disappointing.

1. This is the first time Hurd Home Services has ever had to cancel a project. 2. This contract was cancelled due to high risk liability issues explained in detail to the potential customer. These issues were discovered during the set up process for the demolition phase. ( With in 15 minutes) 3. This potential customer took 2 months to get back to us about the possibility of starting the project, at which time was the busiest time of the year, so they had to go on a waiting list. We are a first come first serve company. 4. The potential customer was told a check for a full refund could be issued on the spot but chose a cashier's check from the bank for personal reasons. 5. We do not finance customers projects for them. We can help customers get financing if necessary but do not specialize in that process. Our Progress Billing process was established to ensure that the project will run on schedule and that there are no financial surprises in the end. Everyday we have two meetings. One in the morning during set up to establish daily goals and the Second at the end of the day after clean up to address any issues that may need resolution. Immediate resolution of any issue is how we Consistently Produce Great Results. 6. It takes a team to accomplish our projects and goals. If our experienced team members see various potential hazards and questionable liability issues then an intelligent decision must be made. In this case it was to cancel the contract. 7. Hurd Home Services treats each and every customer, job, material with a high standard of respect so that all goals are met and the outcome is top notch. Our consistency with our record speaks for itself.

Great work. He cleaned up after job was completed.
Clean, polite, and completed work as contracted in a professional manner. Very pleased with the job and would use again. They were not the highest nor the lowest estimate. I feel a fair price paid for quality workmanship. I was out of town for work so my wife dealt with Joe and Larry during the work phase of the project and she had only compliments about the two men. Work was completed in three days. I would recommend this company and actually already have done so.

Quick response from the first time. Joe came out at a time convenient for us, and spent time asking what was important to us. Very professional and easy to like. We had some sketches from an area home improvement store to show Joe, but would have liked to see his plans to compare why his estimate would cost as it did . The original plans this potential customer submitted to me were from early 2009. They included a kitchen layout. They also included the cost of the Kitchen Cabinets Only. All Materials in general have gone up in the past 5 years, it is 2014. Realistically [member name removed] didn't have the budget to proceed with all she wanted done and was informed on site of this dilemma. I even gave her the name of a finance company we work with to help her out but was informed they couldn't take out any loans to complete the project. I also informed her we could do the project in phases if necessary. Specification of the project are as follows: Tear out/ install all walls/ceiling in kitchen area, Demo/Install all cabinets and countertops, Demo/install laundry room doors, Purchase/Install range hood/ garbage disposal/ dishwasher/stove, Install new plumbing, Install new electrical outlets/lighting, Demo/Install storage room door, demo/install sink/faucet, Install cabinet hardware, Tear out/ Install ceramic flooring in dinning room/ kitchen/ walk in area, hallway, flooring prep of un-leveled area between kitchen and living room before install, install thresholds to all bedrooms, Install a proper hvac system for rangehood, Install new baseboard and shoe molding for flooring, Prime/Paint ceilng and walls. When it comes to the scope of a project of this scale many customers get overwhelmed with the details and logistics involved to complete the project Correctly. I feel we informed [member name removed] of all variables involved and mathematically she still couldn't comprehend why we gave her the price we gave her even after our meeting. Her budget was 11000. That is just not realistic for a project of this scope to be done correctly. We feel we are more than fair when it comes to project pricing and hope that potential customers are a bit more realistic with their visions when it comes to restoration/ remodeling projects. Also to be noted : diy tv shows are great for ideas but not realistic at all when it comes to labor/time/pricing, they do cut out a lot and don't show you the full scope of details involve in home remodeling. Serious Customers are much more understanding as to what needs to be done to complete any home improvement project and we are more than willing to work for and manifest these Customer's visions.

We were impressed with this contractor's professionalism and punctuality. He seemed knowledgeable and able to answer all of our questions. He was able to meet our expected estimate, and was honest with us about what elements of the remodel would significantly raise or lower our costs.
Description of Work: Gave us an estimate on remodeling our bathroom. Approximate estimated cost 10000.00
After contacting nearly 12 other contractors, from flooring specialists to general contractors, Joe was the only contractor willing to take on our complex job. Our floors were highly irregular with lots of undulation and, as Joe uncovered, there was some structural damage to our joists. This was a very complicated job, as it involved leveling out the existing subfloor, adding a new subfloor and laying new flooring. We are extremely pleased with the work that Joe and his crew did to complete our floors. They look fantastic and are finally flat! Joe is an extremely skilled craftsman and his advice and expertise was invaluable, especially in regards to handling our structural issues. Joe was always professional and went out of his way to accommodate our requests and logistical complications over the holidays. Joe and his crew were always prompt, cleaned after themselves each day and were very careful when working around our furniture. The new closets are also wonderful and we have already hired Hurd Home Services to install a new closet system. We have been so happy with the work that Joe and his crew have done that we are looking forward to having Hurd Home Services renovate our bathroom later this spring as well. Hurd Home Services will be our first call for any future projects that we may have!

The experience went well. The owner is a gentleman and was on time. The quote came in a timely manner. The red flag was the price and the length to do the job. This "Potential Customer" was informed in great detail about the Museum Quality Package we offered and what it entailed. He told us that he" didn't mind if we took the two to three weeks to complete the project because he wanted Top Quality and didn't want us to rush anything". He also informed us that he "did not want to lift a finger when it came to tearing down and setting up his own belonging in His Entire House" and that "the only thing he would be responsible for was an Antique China Cabinet". The request was an additional fee and I informed him of this. We are not a moving company and as a rule of thumb limit the amount of items per area we move, any additional items we charge for. This was an entire house and within our job scope but the amount of time consumed to do such a project needed to be billed as a project in itself. I personally have friends and associates that are business owners in the same field of work and all of them told me they would have bid such a job much higher but about the same amount of time to complete in order to do it Correctly. His response to the quote seems slanderous and unrealistic for all that is involved to do it correctly. We offer a variety of services for Serious Customers and never rush a project and always pride ourselves on our Quality. We are consistent in all areas of our business and all the customers we have Actually Worked for have told us they have gotten "more than they paid for." Our actual customer reviews speak for themselves. If you are shopping for a cheap and fast company please don't waste our time and your time. As usual Joe and his crew were on time and professional. They deliver the highest quality work and they are mindful of checking in with you and alerting you to any delays or any changes in the work progress. Great job- happy to refer them to our friends!
Description of Work: Two projects this time: Electrical and Glass window work
I felt comfortable with Joe right from the start and I was pleased that I could have all my work done by one contractor without the hassle of having to coordinate everything myself. He listened to my needs and then suggested ways to meet them. For example, he suggested painting the remaining paneling in the basement so that it did not look out of place with the walls. He also listened to what I wanted for flooring, then made suggestions about a flooring type he had seen that would look much more like real wood. The floating floor that I had installed did not use much glue--an important fact for me since I have a family member who would have to leave the home if high fumes were present. The key deciding factor for me to use Hurd Home Services was the thumbs up from my brother who does similar work in Denver. Unable to do it himself, he guided me through the contractor selection process and when he said he felt comfortable with Joe, I knew I would use him. I found Joe very professional. He checked in with me every day to discuss progress and goals for the day. He kept the worksite clean and when he left each day, I found that the site was left in a safe condition--no open saws, paint cans, etc. The cost of the work was commensurate with the quality and it was consistent with other bids I solicited. I would use Hurd Home Services again.

He was on time every morning for 2 weeks straight, never had to call and fined out where he was or when he was going to show up. They covered the entire carpet with plastic and tape to make sure the carpet would not get messed up. He cleaned and vacuumed the carpet everyday when he was finished for the day. He had another worker with him named Robert, which was another nice outgoing guy, both were very professional and kind to my wife and I the whole time they were at our house. I would and ( WILL ) call them back to do more work to my house in the near future, BEST guy's in a long time that I have meant to work on my house...KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK......JOE & ROBERT!!!!
Description of Work: Joe measured each room that was going to be drywalled and painted. He explained to use what it was going to cost and how much time it was going to take. He went out of his way to make my wife and I happy and to listen to what we wanted done. Joe is a very easy going guy that does great work and doesn't complain if things are changed ( Within Reason ).
