Gene's Refrigeration Heating AC Plumbing & Elec

Working with Gene's was amazing. I had several quotes for my Mom's home, however Gene's was the only company that actually listened to the needs and put together a quote for what was needed to reach those goals. It is a smaller house so noise was an issue, the previous company put the unit in without a drip pan so this was corrected along with correcting the duct work and providing equal heating and cooling throughout the house. The men arrived early every day, they were courteous, explained everything they were doing, and SO CLEAN!! Each day I came in to check on the work after they left and you would have NEVER known they were even there. I strongly recommend (and have) if you need any HVAC services or any service that Gene's offers to call them!

Better than expected or hoped for. Josh came in the evening the same day that I called. He diagnosed the issue and tried to locate a replacement part that night but was not able to. He showed us a "work around" to help us to stay cool overnight and returned bright and early the next morning with the part. It was installed in no time. Josh was wonderful to work with, kind, skilled and very professional. I will surely recommend Gene's whenever the opportunity presents itself. Thank you for your help!

Horrible. Worst experience I have had. A technician (Derek) came to my home on Aug. 30th to look at a faulty outlet and ceiling light in my dormer. The room has been converted to a Master bedroom and my home was built in the late 50's. Very common for this part of Cleveland. Derek was very courteous and told me the wiring was outdated and needed to be redone which I understood. He told me he would email me or call with the estimate. I paid the $89.00 Service charge. I left 3 messages in the upcoming weeks and did not get a return call until a month later on Sept. 27th. The message left my Linda was very short and said that they could not do the work and "good luck finding someone who can do that old of wiring". I waited a month to hear they couldn't do anything? Again, my home is not from the 1800's. I understand if it requires a little more work, but they have even been out in the past to install an outlet and never said anything about my home being too old to have it rewired . So I spent $89 to have nothing done and a month later still need to hire someone else. Why didn't the technician tell me it couldn't be done when he was at my home? Shame on you Gene's! I was a repeat customer and even had them install a new hot water tank in the past, but will never hire them again.

They did a fabulous job. I would definitely hire them and I would highly recommend them.

Very professional. Gene's office called me about 20 minutes before he arrived, and provided an email with a photo of the plumber they were sending. Tom the plumber arrived and put protective plastic booties on so that he would keep the carpet clean. He fixed the issue quickly and replaced the part (a shower cartridge). He even gave me some education about the problem and how to prevent it from happening again. I'll definitely hire them in the future for anything plumbing related. Thanks, Tom!

Leak was identified and repair parts ordered

We use them every year, we use oil. They are our heating repair people, they tune-up our boiler. They are good. The company we used to use was terrible. They are good for heating repair. They come up before it gets cold to tune-up the boiler. They clean it out and let you know if it needs any parts. They have a member program and a non-member program. We are a member and their pricing is reasonable compared to other companies in the area. They are good. They are punctual. We use them all the time.

Matt was our technician. Good communication from the office and the technician. Arrived on time, identified himself. Informed me what he was going to do and how. Advised me in advance of the pricing. Completed the work with no issue, explained new thermostat, cleaned up although there wasn't much mess to this job. Pleasant, professional, and we have fish tanks in common!

Excellent job on the installation and explanation of the system usage and features. Water heater performs very well providing us with more hot water at a much quicker rate than previous system on home.

Great, have used Gene's for years and years.

We have a maintenance agreement with them. I've had them for quite a few years. I like them. They do plumbing, they do air conditioning & furnaces. You get a choice of different maintenance agreements. I always get the 3-year plus you get a 20% discount on your parts and they don't charge you a service call when they come out. They do real good. He has to come back this Monday again to finish up, because he had to get the parts. For this job, I bought the fixture myself and it was $50 to put it in. I've never had to call them out without having a maintenance agreement with them. I think their pricing is good.

I had a complete service and the salesman actually came out, measured the house, and took care of sizing the unit rather than just looking at the old unit. I would recommend them to a friend because of the warranty. It is actually a company warranty. It is for the name brand of the unit I purchased. Most warranties do not cover labor for that kind for 12 years.

It was under contract, they replaced the filter of the furnace, so we had to pay for that. But as far as the coming out that was covered. I had to call them, they were supposed to come out like 2 weeks ago, and didn't had the filter that we needed, so they said when they get back, they'll call us to reschedule the time to come to replace the filter, I had to call them, they never called me, so that would be my only complaint, but I had to give them an A overall.

Josh showed up on time, He quickly tuned up both the furnace and heat pump systems and cleaned the burners on my water heater. He answered all my questions and cleaned up after himself. He was very courteous and knowledgable. Thanks!

We have a specific guy that does a great job.

Electrician showed up on time. However, he was very uncommunicative. He just stared - didn't respond when I said "hello". Just looked at me. When I brought him into kitchen and described the issue, he didn't say a word. He did eventually find and fix 2 issues. But, he spent an hour with a LOT of time wasted. He took a phone call to start the session. Then, he made 4 trips to his truck, each time moving extremely slow and each time bringing back a single tool - instead of just bringing in his tools to begin with like most professionals. He spent 15 minutes on one outlet - and it wasn't even one of the outlets that turned out to have a problem. The cost of $180 was completely out of step with the amount of time he actually worked. He was there for an hour, but wasted a LOT of time. Poor people skills reflects poorly on his company, but that's not what we paid for. Wasting time and billing us for labor for that wasted time is a problem. We had a couple other long-standing electrical issues in the house we were hoping to have him look at. But, after watching this guy work (or not) for an hour we knew there was no way we were going to pay this company to diagnose other problems. After the $180 price tag, we confirmed. Office staff was very professional. And perhaps their other services (or even other electricians) are top-notch. But I would never call them for electrical work again based upon the performance of this employee.

We just moved in a new house and detected a gas leak. We wanted quick service do to safety factors and Genes was the only provider willing to do the job beginning the next day. They were prompt, courteous and very professional during the whole process. For once we felt like we got our moneys worth because we have zero complaints. We are extremely critical when it comes to contractors but Genes was up to the task. Price might have been a bit high but everything else was a winner. Great service!

The service technicians admitted to us that they had no idea what was wrong with our generator - they just kept replacing parts in attempt to fix it and it didn't work. (The service technicians who installed this generator and knew how to trouble-shoot it are no longer employed by Gene's.) Gene's came to our house 5 times and replaced 3 major parts, but the generator still didn't work. We kept asking them to call Carrier and ask for help, but apparently this wasn't done. The service technician kept telling us that he was going to order another part and they would call us when it came in, but then we never heard from them. We kept calling them weekly for 3 months, but they never once contacted us to follow-up. In desperation, we called repeatedly and asked to speak with the current person in charge (we were told his name was 'Keith'), but we kept getting excuses why Keith wasn't availabe to talk to us about all our problems with service. After promises that Keith would call us 4 different times - it never happened. Additionally, whenever we did have an appt. for service scheduled many times the service technician did not show up at that time, or often even that day! We had originally used Briggs Heating and Cooling for many years for our repairs. About 10-12 years ago Gene's Refrigeration purchased Briggs, and for some time we had the same reliable repair technicians. But gradually these people retired and were replaced by technicians who were not as reliable or knowledgeable as the ones Briggs had used. We tried for many years to stay with Gene's, but we're now fed up with them and have no confidence in their abilities. Interestingly, we stopped calling Gene's several weeks ago, and have heard nothing from them about repairing our generator (and which we had purchased a yearly contract with them for maintenance!). We called another repair service and they are working with us to repair our generator. Interestingly, they found - in just a few minutes - that the problem with it seemed to be in the electrical voltage regulator - and that those other 3 major circuit boards that Gene's replaced may have not needed to replaced after all!

This company was simply frustrating to deal with. Our heat exchanger cracked in the middle of the night, rendering our furnace inoperable. We called at 8 AM that morning, and we were told that a technician would arrive between 9 AM and 1 PM. We were further told that the technician would call ahead of time to let us know when to expect the technician. By 12:30 PM, we had not heard from anyone. My husband called back and was told that the technician was in Port Clinton, Ohio, which is 1.5 hours from my home. We pointed out that the technician wouldn't be there by 1 PM, to which the receptionist replied, "yes, but the technician could be done in as little as 5 minutes, which means he could be there 45 minutes after that." My husband was extremely frustrated at this point, since he waited in a cold house with two young children for four hours for a technician that was sent 1.5 hours away. My husband received a call an hour later stating that a different technician was on his way. The technician charged $90 for a service call. He informed my husband that our heat exchanger was cracked, and that he would have to order a new one that "may take a few days" to get in. The part was covered under warranty, but he quoted my husband an estimate of $600 for labor, explaining that the job is difficult and takes a significant amount of labor. At no time did he offer any heaters so our house could be kept warm while we waited on the part. Meanwhile, a co-worker suggested to me that a local competitor serviced her furnace and brought in "industrial heaters" that kept the house warm while they waited on the repair. At that point, I called Gene's to ask if they offered anything similar. The receptionist stated that they did, and they would send some heaters out to us.A Gene's employee arrived an hour later with three small space heaters. They certainly didn't look like heaters I would trust to safely run all night. When I asked if they could be kept on all night, the Gene's employee shrugged and said, "as far as I know." Thankfully, the part was acquired the next day, and a technician arrived to complete the repair. He took exactly 1.5 hours to complete the job. When he asked my husband for $600, my husband was shocked. He asked the technician if that was for labor, to which the technician replied, "yes." When my husband asked if they charged $400/hour, the technician started citing the expensive glue he had to use and the cost of overhead. My husband asked to see a breakdown of the $600 charge, which the technician could not provide. At that point, my husband called me, and I talked to the technician over the phone. I asked the technician if I'm just supposed to pay a number he pulled out of the air, to which the technician replied, "yes, why not?" I told him the reason why not is that I'd like to know what exactly I'm paying for. He did reply that this included the cost of obtaining the part, which took a guy driving up to Cleveland to get (I didn't know this) as well as tubes, miscellaneous parts, overhead of the business, etc. I asked if he could just provide the hourly rate he charges, and he said he couldn't. Instead, he suddenly described the job as a "flat rate job," meaning that all replacement of heat exchangers would cost $600. The estimate was NEVER described as a "flat rate" cost. It was exactly that - an estimate. It's not that we didn't expect to pay a few hundred dollars for a furnace repair. It's just maddening that a service provider can't be up front and honest with the way it charges the fees. $600 sounds like a reasonable estimate for a complex job that might take upwards of a few hours. It does not seem reasonable for a job that takes 1.5 hours. As far as we can tell (the technician left my house an hour ago) the work was done well (and apparently efficiently). I just think that Gene's customer service skills are highly lacking. I'm frustrated that the initial service call took longer than quoted (and who knows how long we would have been waiting if we hadn't called and just waited on the technician from Port Clinton), I'm frustrated with the fact that they didn't offer us heaters to begin with if they had them available, and I'm frustrated with the lack of transparency in the way they bill for a job.

Gene's provides professional, courteous, and affordable support for heating and air conditioning. Gene's installed the original equipment and I have used them to perform routine maintenance. Gene's employees are friendly and take the time to answer any questions to my satisfaction.
