Great experience. Refinished our wood floors. The crew performing the work were perfectionists and showed up on time every day. Their equipment created very little dust and we couldn't be happier. Our wood floors look brand new again. Will be recommending this company to our friends.

They did an excellent job. They were in and out in no time and not to mention very punctual! The installers were very professional and nice and did a good job. I had an option of just calling the showroom after the work was done to pay with credit card or pay the installers with a check. They couldn't have been nicer!

They were great over the phone. The took great detail and gave me an accurate estimate. When they arrived, they had all the equipment necessary and used a carpet remnant to create a new threshold. It was installed quickly and you couldn't even tell the repair was there. I would highly recommend Harms for any carpet repairs.

They installed the wrong species of wood. When the estimator came out I told him the rest of the hardwood floors in this house were ash. Of course we wanted the same, but he took a sample of wood and informed us our floors were red oak. So that was what was installed. The finishers could not come close to matching the existing floors (with the stain) because, of course, they were not red oak. The owner was told of the mistake and quickly called to apologize and tell us the floor would be torn out and replaced, which it was. But our home was in chaos for weeks and weeks. We are satisfied with the final product, but I would not go through that again!

Overall, very pleased. There was some accidental water damage in the process, but the tile installer handled the situation professionally and promptly.

Jake Harms was very helpful in getting our job scheduled and completed before the holidays. He moved some jobs around to fit us in. Everyone was very helpful and courteous to my wife and myself, from Ray who came to estimate the cost,to Clint and his helper,I did not get his name, they were very prompt and professional. We are having Harms install carpet upstairs in the future. We would definitely use Harms for our flooring needs in the future.

The salesman at the store wasn't interested in helping me select flooring, but directed me to where I could find samples. I selected a couple of samples and I was told to take them home and look at them and that I would get a call on Monday (I visited the store on a Saturday) and someone would come out and measure and give me an estimate. I never received and call and had to call them back to arrange a time. The man did come out and measure, but then I didn't receive an estimate. About a week after the new floor was installed by another company, I got the estimate from Harms in the mail. I just didn't feel like they cared if they got the job.

We bought tile for our family room however the slab floor was not even, so carpeting had to be ordered. Harms Carpeting handled the return of the tile and supplies with no restocking fee, and kept in touch until the carpeting was installed. It was out of stock but finally arrived and we were put on the top of the list for installation. All in all, a good experience with Rick, John and Harms Carpeting.

When the salesperson came out to give me a quote I told him that I had some uneven spots and asked him to check those and if they would be a problem to add any cost to fix those spots in the quote, even if I had to pay to have the whole floor leveled. He said it shouldn't be a problem but that he wanted to send the installer out to check. Installer came out and reported back that it wouldn't be a problem with the floor I had chosen. Well, it's a problem! I love to look at my floor but I absolutely hate stepping anywhere on it. It creaks and cracks and squeaks everywhere! I was told that I had a lifetime warranty on installation and I've had someone out twice to check on the floor. The first time they pulled up the floor and just added more padding underneath to try to even it out. The second time someone came out I was basically told that there was nothing they would do because the problem wasn't "bad enough". I've had a lot of trouble trying to get in touch with Harms. In fact I sent them an email a week ago and have received no response. Honestly I waited this long to write a review because I was hoping that Harms and I could come to some type of understanding but apparently that's not going to happen. I've already told everyone I know both personally and professionally not to use Harms. Angie's list is my next step.
Description of Work: Took up flooring and then put down Armstrong Laminate flooring in kitchen, dining room and hallway.
Ceramic installation was not as intimidating as anticipated. Carpet installer was professional and friendly.
Description of Work: Selected bathroom and kitchen ceramic wall tiles. We installed with info provided from Harms. Also, carpet installer repaired kitchen carpet and stretched carpets in two bedrooms. Excellent workmanship.

They were really nice. They are pretty good. They were very helpful finding the carpet that I wanted. They did over and above what some people would do trying to help me find things and help to find someplace to have it re-vase for the current carpet that I would want so they were very helpful with that. They were very accommodating where we gonna put the carpet in and the carpet it looks nice when they were done. I think it’s a family owned business. They have been in the business quite a while and it was very good. Price was good.

When I spoke to the sales rep on the phone, he told me they would come out, sand the floors and place three stain samples they thought would work and allow me to choose one of them. I had a very specific request that they use an oil based finish on my floors. He tried to sell me on all the benefits of water base (less smell, faster dry times...things that would benefit the person doing the work more so than me) over oil and in the end, I told him I like the nice amber you get with oil and I definitely wanted a semi gloss finish because I liked shine on the floors. They subcontract out to a different company for this work. The guy who did the work explained the arrangement to me. The guys were very polite and explained how the relationship with Harms works for them. One thing caught my attention...he said, "we do it right the first time, because if I have to come out here and fix something in your house, it comes out of my pocket." At any rate, the sanding was good...no dust. The next day, when the guy showed up with the stain, he had one color. He said, "I'm 100 percent sure this is the right color for the floors. I've been doing this a long time and I know what a floor needs. I said "they told me you would provide three samples of color" and he said, "well, all I have is this" - so, I suppose it's my fault that I didn't stop the guy and direct him to get me three samples...but I'm not very confrontational, and they said they have a money back guarantee...they'll make it right! So, he put his single application of stain on the floor and it was a dull brown and I wanted something with a bit more warm tone in it. the finish was flat. I told them I wanted shine and they said it would take a couple weeks to get anything else and this would dry with shine. Guess what? it was flat, and I didn't like it. Then they sanded down another floor in the house and put a clear coat of water based finish on the floor. I was shocked...it totally took the shine out of the floor and it dried with a dull, almost opaque finish. I gave the floors a week to cure and see if I could learn to like them. I didn't. During that week, I found some large pieces of debris that were coated into the floor so I called the store to see if they could have someone out and repair them. While I was on hold, their recorded sales pitch reminded me that if I was not 100% satisfied with the work they would send someone back out and make it right! So I spoke to someone on the phone and explained my story. They said YES, someone will call you to discuss this and we'll take care of it. Relief! Days passed. no call. I called again. Same end...someone will call you - he's not here now, but he'll call. OK. Days passed. No call. Again, I called. I got to speak to the sales rep this time. He assured me that the contractor would be in touch to schedule the time for them to come and do the work. No call. I called again. Same promise. I called two more times, and told them I was considering filing a dispute with the credit card company and they did call back and explained how busy they were and said YES YES YES, they will call you to schedule but Harms can't schedule it because it's through a subcontractor. You know, we both have full time jobs and lives and at some point, we just decided it wasn't worth it to pursue them any longer and we gave up. And you know, unsurprisingly, I never did get that call they promised to schedule my floor rework from the floor contractor. I still don't like the floors, but you know, they're floors...so it's not the end of the world...BUT, we spent a lot of money, we didn't get what we wanted, and I would never use them again, nor would I recommend them to anyone. They don't stand behind their work.
Description of Work: They sanded and refinished floors in two rooms in my house, did some repairs on the floor and placed an overcoat on a floor.

Response from Harms Carpet One Floor & Home
Our goal is to always do our best to satisfy our customers. As far as we are concerned, we agree that the job is not complete and we have left multiple messages waiting for a return call to schedule the remaining work so we were surprised to see such a negative review. Two additional messages were left yesterday (one to the local business phone and one to the Chicago-based cell # we have on file) and, 24 hours later, no return call has been received. Items to note as follows: 1. Oil versus water-based finish: New air quality laws went into effect in Ohio in 2009 for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) limiting VOC content to 350 VOC g/L. Contractors can be fined up to $500 per gallon for use of noncompliant products such as oil-modified and moisture-cure polyurethanes with VOC levels above 350 g/L so we have been abiding by these regulations which rule out using the oil-based finishes that were primarily used prior to 2009. I agree that the ambering effect associated with the oil finishes did create a nice look but the risk to homeowner health and the impact on our environment (in addition to the possibility of the $500 per gallon fine) pushed us to use all water-based finishes in 2009. 2. Large pieces of debris in the finish: If I remember correctly the large pieces of debris that were in the finish were garlic cloves that fell off the countertop after we applied a coat of finish. If these would have been on the floor as we were performing work we could have removed them and addressed just this area at that time. We are still planning on addressing this issue for you when we return to complete the work. 3. Finish sheen: We have the ability to add another coat of finish over the existing floor in a semi-gloss finish that will provide you with the higher luster look you are requesting. There is no charge to do so. 4. Payment: Our policy is to obtain a 50% deposit prior to beginning work and to collect the balance when the job is complete. We have not attempted to collect the balance as it is our belief that additional work still needs to be performed before the job is complete. 5. The person with whom we contracted to perform work is different than the Angie's List Member name associated with this review. Bottomline, we do expect to perform additional work if you can call us back to schedule. The issues you listed are all things that can be addressed and our goal is to leave you with floors that meet your expectations. I am confident in our ability to resolve these issues to your satisfaction.
