I hired a very reputable Company that installs garage doors. Through this Company I chose a Clopay carriage style garage door. After the expert installation was completed I noticed that a window grid was not fitting properly in one window section and that one grid clip was not consistent with the rest of the window grid clips in the other window sections and would pop out when I opened and closed the garage door. There seemed to be some obstruction stopping the clip from fastening properly. There were also some shinny areas on the faux wood trim in this same area. The trim on this style of door is some sort of plastic composite. Upon further inspection of the door I noticed there was residual glue in a seam on the panel in this same area and also residual glue on the same window grid that did not fit properly. I was told by the installation technician that sometimes there is residual glue in the assembly process and that it is cleaned off the trim/panels before shipment. Whatever cleaner was used to remove the residual glue also removed the faux wood texture on the trim in these areas which made them flat and shinny. I was told that I could sand over these areas and then the paint would adhere. The problem is that the trim in this area would not look consistent with the rest of the trim on the garage door after being sanded. After speaking with Customer Service at the Garage Door Company I had hired, they contacted Clopay and ordered up a replacement door. When that door arrived three weeks later and was installed I noticed manufacturing flaws in that door too. The body of the door is made of steel and the trim is glued onto the steel panels to give the carriage style appearance. One piece of the horizontal trim at the bottom of the garage door panel must have slid in the gluing process. The trim piece is at a slant and off by 1/4". Also there were two vertical trim pieces at the bottom section of the door do not meet flush with the trim pieces of the next upper section. The trim sticks out in these two sections by at least a 1/4". There are painting instructions that inform the buyer to paint any areas of exposed steel. I had to prime twice all the interlocking seams between the panels as there was exposed steel. It appears that Clopay paints only a thin coat of paint on the steel portion of this door. I have noticed that within two months there is rust appearing on the strap hinges. These are decorative and add to the carriage style look. The problem is that the hinges are screwed into the composite trim and into the steel door about 1/4". I was told by the installation technician that I shouldn't remove these hinges very often because eventually the composite trim will loose it's tooth and the hinge will not stay adhered to the door. I will have to try and touch up the hinges without removing them from the door. This is going to be a bit tricky because I am going to have to remove a screw here and there on the strap hinges because that's where the rust is appearing. I can honestly say that if I were to buy another garage door I doubt it would be a Clopay product unless they improve on their quality control.
