Description of Work: We had just moved into Eastern Ohio from the Chicago area, where we had relied on Angie’s List quite a lot. My laptop went “lights out” and my son-in-law’s laptop had major problems, including but not limited to instances of the conficker virus. The manufacturer of my computer offered a phone diagnosis for $49.95; through independent research I had figured it was probably the power supply or the motherboard, so I declined their help. I checked Angie’s List for Pittsburgh and eastern Ohio but found the closest highly rated computer repair shops were about 50 miles away, so after several local calls I decided to take them to Barton Computer Services. A few hours after I dropped them off, I got a call from the owner. He had cleaned off the fan and several connectors in my laptop and it was running again. After subsequent discussion, I accepted his offer to clean up the software, as he had found some malware and a lot of other junk in it. He replaced the name-brand virus checker I had had with my previous ISP with a freeware one that works at least as well, and with a freeware malware checker. After a couple of weeks, I can say that my computer works better than it has in a long time. He said that my sons-in-law’s computer needed reformatting and reloading of the operating system. When he did this work, he found and isolated several bad disk sectors, and in addition he loaded the freeware virus checker and malware checker.
