We appreciate the feedback he gave us and any other Angie's list members comments. It helps us know what we are doing right and if we are doing anything that needs attention and it gives us the opportunity to make changes, we want to know. And we thank Angie's List for the opportunity to respond to our Angie's List customers and the member. It is a little unusual to receive a report over FIVE YEARS LATER after a job has been completed (The member stated that we did the job in January 2010, but our records indicate that we did the job in December of 2007 (FIVE YEARS LATER), but I will do my best to recollect the member's comment's about his experience with our company and my self (John Allen). I will also state our side of the facts as we see them and dispel anything incorrect that the member may have pointed out in his comments. We did the member's roof in the middle of winter (December 2007), his house sits back in the woods, his yard is quite flat and during the time of the install the ground was quite saturated. While we make every effort to clean up nails and debris, sometimes it is inevitable to find every nail that may have landed in mud and sink in to the dirt in which our magnets would not pick up and that conversation is usually conveyed to the homeowner so they know what to expect. We also had periods of snow during that time I believe and if any nails get under the snow it becomes very difficult to detect. We use tarps to catch most of the debris but sometimes our tarps do not catch all debris and nails. He is correct when he said the new roof we put on did leak, and I would agree, it was a bad leak. We took swift action as soon as we got the call and made every effort to do damage control by tarping the roof, getting rid of any moisture on the roof to stop the leaking and at the same time, wet vacing the floor to soak up any moisture. An area of his flat roof that we had installed did not seal properly with a product we were using, so corrections had to be made to the roofing materials for proper adhesion. We finally got the roof sealed and the bedroom ceiling fixed. It took some time and coordination with the homeowner's and they were very patient and accommodating which we thanked them for and we were apologetic at the same time about the unfortunate circumstances. While I agree with the member about the main leak that occurred and we accepted fault and responsibility for that, I don't agree with much of the rest of his assessment and I will explain. I had to go back in and look in our file since this job is over FIVE years old, so it can be difficult to recollect all the exact details because of the length of time it took for this report to appear. But this is what I know, he has a ranch home situated back in the woods. His roof is not your typical roof, a large portion of his roof is a flat roof and there are a few sloped areas. Most of the homes in the Greater Cincinnati area have sloped roofs and there is a reason for this, a sloped roof has a less tendency to hold water and drain off and the aesthetics of a sloped roof are usually more desirable architecturally. The member virtually had no overhangs (soffit's / eaves) on his home. Our sales representative at the time, according to my notes, had a conversation with the member about the fact that he did not have an overhang / soffit on his home and with the flat roof area, his home was more prone to ice damming issues. Ice damming issue's are not a huge problem in our area but when we get 6" to 12" of snow or more with constant freezing and thawing temperatures, ice damming can be a nightmare to a homeowner. And according to my notes, this conversation was relayed to the member . Our representative, according to my notes, suggested to him that he have a soffit built on to his roof line to help prevent any ice dams due to the nature of his flat roof. And according to my notes, our representative also recommended gutter guards to him because he lives in a heavily wooded area. He declined our recommendation to have the soffits built and declined to have the gutter guards installed. We proceeded with the work with the understanding that ice damming is not covered under our warranty (it's on our contracts), and that if he did not keep his gutters cleaned, that it may also void the warranty as well. The leak issue that developed two weeks later was after a heavy snow occurred, I believe it was around 6" or better. The member's gutters were full of ice, he was getting a leak into his window. With all the ice and snow, it was difficult to tell where the water was coming from. The ice was so thick, we couldn't chip it out and there was lots of ice on the member's roof. I told him that we would have to wait for the ice to melt before any remedy's could be done. I made a trip back out to the member's house after the snow and ice had melted. I tried to explain to him that ice damming is next to impossible to control. For any skeptics, I would invite you to read an article in the Cincinnati Enquirer where a well known Cincinnati roofer was interviewed about ice damming, you can read the article here on the enquirer website. I suggested to the member that a de-icing cable might need to be installed in order to keep the gutters free flowing if we continued to have extreme ice and snow conditions for the rest of the winter. I can't remember if he installed or if we installed a de-icing cable in the area where the problem was but I believe one was installed. After the de-icing cable was installed, he was still having a leak. So I went back out to his house to see if I could locate the problem. This time, I discovered that his elbows from his gutters were clogged with leaves and it was causing water to back up and leak into his window. Apparently this was the problem from the beginning and I did not charge him for cleaning the gutters. I also installed a gutter guard after this problem occurred to two sections of the member's gutters where it looked like leaves could cause a problem at no additional cost as a good measure since he was having problems with leaks and leaves. Keep in mind, that it is the owner's responsibility to keep leaves and debris out of the gutters (if gutter guards are not installed) but I did not make an issue out of it since he was upset. Just another clarification, he states that I told him to "shove off", I have never said anything of the sorts to him or any other customer. I have always treated himwith respect and responded to him when he had any issues, and I believe I handled the situation in the best way I knew how and being in the business for over 20 years I did everything I could in my opinion on a professional level. When he was having the leaks in his window, he was demanding that I replace a portion of the roof because he thought the roof was the problem. I tried to explain to him that the roof was not the problem and he was experiencing an ice damming problem (and a gutter clog issue, which I later discovered). He states that he paid another roofing company $3,000.00 to fix the roof we installed. We were never made aware of any other repairs by him. nor do we have any proof that there were any repairs by another roofing company or what was done, and why it was done, nor did we have a chance to inspect any so called repairs. All he had to do was call us if he was encountering any other problems and we would have fixed the issue(s). Unfortunately with his admission that another roofing company performed work on the roof we originally did, this poses a problem. If any future problems occur with a leak etc., the question becomes, who is responsible? Fingers start to point because another contractor became involved. I / we will work with the member if any future problems arise, however, depending on the nature of what type of work was done and how it was done remains questionable if any warranty's are in jeopardy. Quoting him again "Funny, now it does not leak at all". I will remind him, and anyone reading this report, that every time he had a leak (with the exception of the first original leak), it was a result of two problems, ice damming, or his failure to keep his gutters clean. I will remind him and anyone reading this report that the last two winters have been relatively mild. It's when we get 6" to a foot of snow or more that homes are vulnerable to ice damming. I hope he does not encounter any further problems but no home is exempt from ice damming. And I hope he keeps his gutters clean because without a soffit, his gutters are right up against his house and one clog can result in another leak. The member's attempt to discredit and defame me and my company are taken very seriously. I / we apologized to him for the unfortunate circumstances that occurred and we have made our best effort to make it right. We also did additional work and installed additional materials at no cost in an effort to appease him. One topic can't be disputed, I believe our record on Angie's list speaks for itself. We have a total of 47 reviews, 39 of those reviews were rated A's by other Angie's list members, we have 6 B's, one C, and now his (one) F after 5 years later. We respect his grade and opinion, we don't believe it is deserved but everyone is entitled to their opinion, that is why Angie's List is here. We have won the Angie's list Super Service Award in 2011 and 2012 (two years in a row), and my/our hope is that , this is an indicator that we are doing a lot of things right with few mistakes. We don't claim to be perfect but we do strive to maintain our A rating and will continue to do so. Thank you for taking the time to read this report.
