We needed to get rid of our brick path/porch in the front of our house as it was always lined with weeds, bricks were crumbling, etc. Robert's proposal was very detailed and while the price was a little more than our other bid we were very comfortable with him/his bid. The project was started in late fall so there were some delays due to rain/cold weather but Robert by far was the best communicator of information we have ever experienced with any work on our homes. He also updated us on the progress of the project and his workers were prompt, pleasant, and incredibly hard workers. All home improvement projects would go more smoothly if all companies communicated like this! The path and porch came out beautiful and we would use this company again for concrete work and recommend them to anyone who asks about concrete work. Since it was getting cold at the end of the project, Robert said he would come back and powerwash the path in the spring.

Mr. Barrett sealed our raised aggregate driveway and patio in the Fall of 2015. He had to use a water-based sealer since oil-based is no longer permitted under EPA. After the sealant dried, some white, cloudy areas appeared, primarily on the patio. At first I thought the sealant might have been misapplied, but that was not the case as the issue had something to do with prior sealant applications (oil-based) and the new, non-tinted sealant (water-based). Mr. Barrett researched the issue and eventually came up with the application of a solvent which liquefied all existing sealants and then he re-rolled the patio before it dried. This worked with the exception of a few small cloudy spots that I fixed by hand rubbing more solvent on those areas. The result is that the patio now looks just fine. The whole fix process took about a year because of the research time and the rather short temperature/humidity windows when the solvent could be applied. Mr. Barrett made several trips to the house and was determined to fix the issue at his expense even though he did not cause the problems. He never gave up. He is a man of his word.

Robert immediately suggested that I call concrete leveling companies who could use "flash fill" and/or "hydraulic cement" to drill into the concrete and fill the void properly. He said that was the best way to solve this problem, and my costs and timeline would best be suited to their service options. I am grateful for his candor and the time he spent with me.

Let me begin by saying that we are not always the easiest people to please, and we are very happy with the outcome of our paver patio. Robert responded immediately to our enquiry, recommended that we obtain additional quotes, and actually gave us the most competitive (and detailed) quote. He was able to build and complete the project ahead of schedule. He is honest and takes incredible pride in his work. His team is composed of veterans and it is clear they have been working together for a very long time. They ensure that the customer is happy and are willing to come to a fair resolution whenever we felt something needed to be adjusted. The work was done in a very professional and courteous manner; they were always willing to answer any questions that we had along the way. Robert manages a business that is sustained by the recommendations of his customers and word-of-mouth. We are very proud of the work and craftsmanship of our patio and highly recommend his team- Thank you, Robert.
Description of Work: We built a 22x22 patio with Unilock Pavers (Beacon Hill pavers and Brussels Dimensional Wall with Ledgestone coping). We already had a design prepared- we paid for our gas line, electrical wiring, and landscaping separately, but Robert installed the perimeter lighting.

Robert provided good advice and professional assessment of the project--he recommends higher strength mix which is worth the money. He provided a clear cost proposal, and an estimate of start date, about a month after cost proposal. He coordinated extensively with my homeowners association, which was great for me. Demo day went smooth and his crew formed the job and demo'd in one day. He then got the ok from city inspector and scheduled the pour for the next working day. His crew is experienced, had plenty of manpower, and worked efficiently as a team. I note that we ran into trouble with the concrete delivery--not Robert's fault--and the mix was getting wetter as the job progressed...Robert halted the pour, sent the truck away and demanded new delivery--that was going well, but the second truck didn't bring enough concrete to finish the job! Once again Robert got a new order to finish the job, and had to put in a new joint to mask the final part of the pour--it was a big pain that he managed expertly. The last day, they cut the joints and broke down the forms--a first rate, expert job.

Mr. Barrett met owner at scheduled time, discussed job to owners satisfaction. He kept us informed promptly of any delays, weather, etc. of which there was only one, and that was for the next day. He had a crew and tools, forms were set properly. Crew was more than adequate for the job, and operated as a well-experienced crew. I have no complaints about Mr. Barrett nor his crew, would use him again and would freely recommend him to anyone. Work and demeanor very satisfactory.

Barrett has done work for us for well over ten years. He removed a damaged roof and replaced it. He had to redo the brick under our kitchen windows. He completely redid the interior of our garage and utility room. He replaced our patio floor and replaced sidewalks and also did the concrete foundation for a shed. He has also done numerous small jobs for us. We are not sure we might have been able to stay in this house without his help and the work he has done for us. He and his son, Shawn are completely trustworthy and careful in who they hire so they can enter our home. We have nothing but the highest respect for both of them. They have been fair in their pricing. Also, I know they do NOT base their pricing on the neighborhood--as some might. I have recommended him highly to friends.
Description of Work: We removed an old wide patio door in our family room that was definitely dead and replaced it with a three pane window with two wood panels that Rosati Windows made for us at a cost of !, 580.27. The wood on the inside of the window was unfinished at our request because the Barretts were going to do the installation. Barrett and his son, Shawn had to build up the interior and exterior of the house by two feet and install the window. It required extensive brick work on the exterior and framing, insulation and wallboard on the interior. Outside Barrett matched the brick on the rest of the house perfectly. The exterior of the window matches the kitchen windows on the north side of the house perfectly. Inside, the woodwork that finished the two panes and the framing around the window is nothing short of magnificent. There is a lot of woodwork in the family room. Shawn Barrett spent at least 17 hours developing a stain that matches the rest of the woodwork. The framing and paneling on the window is oak and the rest of the woodwork is birch. It is a perfect match. He also gave me his recipe so that I have it if we ever have to replace woodwork . I highly recommend Shawn for finish carpentry work.

I found that working with Robert Barrett and his crew was a great experience. It began with the estimate (I got several), where Mr. Barrett walked with me over the areas to be replaced and discussed what was important to me (grading to make sure all concrete work drained away from the house, and the installation of a new window well). He then described what his company could do and later provided an emailed estimate with details of the work to be performed and some possible contingencies (was there concrete under some of the old asphalt driveway, for example, and did it have a gravel base). Also, since I got his estimate in the fall, we discussed the possibility that weather might prevent him from pouring concrete later that season and that we might have to postpone the work until spring. As it happened, winter weather came early that year, so he came the following spring. They have just finished up and the job is beautiful. The crew was courteous and considerate, and Mr. Barrett or his foreman, Shaun, kept me and my family informed throughout the process. Also, they cleaned up at the end of each workday and fielded questions about what would happen next. I feel like I got a quality product at a fair price and also the privilege of working with a thoughtful and capable crew.

I would like to start writing about Robert's work starting with Robert. He is been a great person with the best attitude I have ever seen. He had the best people on the job to complete my backyard patio Even though the work was small with a 2 weeks duration, he had the best people (about 20+ years of experience people) with complete dedication and ownership on the site. He used to make sure that everyday he comes and inspect the work for the best quality. His politeness and punctuality gives any customer the trust day one when he starts the work. His experience on the details was top notch. I would recommend Robert to all and I would rate him and his work A+.

Robert and his guys did a fabulous job. He made recommendations to our original plan based on his years of experience which made it a better end result for us. They were here each day and made great progress towards completion. The end finished product is so nice - no more walking in the grass and mud to get from the front of the house to the back. They left us fill that we requested and took with them anything we did not want. I would definitely call his back for any future concrete needs.

It was a good experience - I had trouble even getting other contractors to call me back, as apparently a sidewalk is a small job for them. Robert returned phone calls, and his crew, including his two sons, showed up when they said they would and over a period of 4 days, did what appears to be excellent work in digging out my crumbling, old walk from the driveway to the front door, and replacing it with a new concrete walk. The guys were all friendly, efficient and hard-working. They got rid of the old concrete, put in framing, laid a new gravel base, poured new concrete, and finished it off very nicely, even to replacing sod along the edges and replanting my bulbs, which I did not expect! The new walk is everything I hoped - it looks great, and drains well. Robert was very good about communicating, even calling after it was all done to make sure I was satisfied, and the whole crew seemed very professional. I would not hesitate to use them again or to recommend them to others. Customers should be aware that there are apparently several Robert Barretts in the concrete business - using the middle initial A should get you to this one.

I explained that I was having a hard time even getting someone to call me back. Instead of explaining he didn't want my small job, or not even bothering to call me back as some businesses did, he found a solution. Told me a man named Ron Armentrout does some jobs for him and would do it for $800 and be in contact with me to schedule. Ron called me that day, asked if he could do it Thursday or Friday, and was on my doorstep around 10am Thursday to remove that horrid concrete set of stairs with a smile.
Description of Work: Rob refered me to a concrete guy who works for him occasionally, could get the job done faster (Rob aparently was scheduling out in May). I wanted my entryway concrete steps removed and the debris hauled away, because I needed to have the new wooden ones put in before winter.

It went very well - Robert initially came out and gave us an estimate - both of the time it would take for our driveway and for the work that his team would be performing on the driveway. There was a complication with the scheduling - but that had nothing to do with Robert; it had to do with the city working on the curbside & road-laying. This timing complicated - and eventually the driveway work and the city street work ended up being at the same time. Robert did his best and tried to talk and coordinate with the city folks - but there was only so much that could be done with the city. In addition to some city road-paving related delays there were some delays due to weather (outside of Robert's control) - and he had to stop the work and not pour cement during rainy days. Though it appears to be an inconvenience in the short term, it is the right thing to do for the cement and its longevity on the driveway. Hence, we agreed. Robert's work was very professional; methodical and timely. His quality of work was of high grade - and i assume this comes from his many years in this area. He brings in a small team, led by his son - and they are very professional & courteous in how they go about doing their work. We paid him a small portion ($200) at the time of agreeing to the contract and scheduling our time. We paid a portion when the old driveway was removed and another portion when the driveway was poured. We made the last payment when the salt-coating was completed. (Made all these payments by a personal check) Robert's concrete work has been a success - as evidenced by the many neighbors who have directly contacted him (either when he was working here - or will be reaching out to him soon). A few of these neighbors are very experienced engineers in this field, and knowledgable about the product & process. So - the fact that such knowledgable neighbors reached out to him was re-assuring to us about the quality of work that he had done in our driveway. Upon completion of the driveway, and after 2 weeks of setting time he returned to spend a day to finish the salt-protection coating. Overall a very satisfying experience - and i would certainly recommend him & his team for any one with similar projects.

Our experience with Robert Barrett was outstanding! We purchased a hot tub in June for our existing paver patio. Due to the size/weight of the hot tub, the manufacturer recommended a 4" cement pad in lieu of adding the weight to the existing paver patio. We thought selecting the hot tub was the most difficult part until we made calls trying to find a reputable company to install the cement pad. We called five other "A" rated companies on Angie's list to provide estimates. Unfortunately, all four companies indicated that they would not have time for our small job; in fact, one of the companies laughed and told us to get a wheel barrel. The other company flat out didn't return our call. So we refined our search a little closer to home and discovered Robert A Barrett Concrete from Plain City. He was also very busy with larger jobs but valued our need for concrete and communicated that he would try to make it work for our end of July hot tub delivery. From beginning to end, the experience with Robert was EXCELLENT. Here is why: 1) When we called to determine if he would be willing to take on our job, he actually answered the phone and took the time to understand our needs 2) During our initial conversation, he set-up an appt to provide the estimate that met our busy schedule. 3) Arrived on time for the estimate appt and provided us with helpful hints for the install. He also explained the process which included removing existing patio pavers where hot tab pad was to be placed, excavating and hauling away dirt, installing limestone base, form/grade to 4", install 3/8" rebar, and using a 6.5 bag mix, 6% AE, and fiber mesh, finish with broom finish and hand tooled control joints, apply 1 coat of sealant, strip forms, clean-up job, and haul away any unused materials. 4)Provided the estimate in a few short days 5) Gladly accepted a few modifications that we made to the hot tab sizing, addition of chamfer corners , and addition of adding an electric conduit thru the concrete to help hide the hot tub electrical work. 6) Made an extra trip on a Sunday prior to pouring to ensure he understood all our changes 7) Installation and clean-up went well and occurred within around 10-12 days after our signed proposal was received and well before our hot tub delivery date! All of the above is how people should conduct business but unfortunately that is not the case. We are happy that the other 5 companies turned down our job; we found the winning company in the end. Thank you Robert A Barrett...you are doing business the right way and we will highly recommend your company for concrete services.

I called Barrett concrete to get an estimate on two driveways on my farm property. A large area in the back and a small area in the front of the property. Robert came out and gave me a quote which I ultimately accepted and completed the work in a courteous and professional manner. I figured I would wait a year to see how the concrete performed before leaving a review but unfortunately the concrete didn't last that long. As spring approached I noticed a hairline crack going up the front of the driveway which has just gotten larger and larger and now looks quite bad. Inspecting further this weekend and I can see more cracks in the front that will turn out the same way. When I contacted Robert he claimed that a heavy truck must have driven on it which is not true because there is a tree on one side and a electric pole on the other preventing anything but passenger vehicles from accessing the front driveway. He said he could give me a quote to fix something I just paid him to do. While I liked Robert, apparently he doesn't stand behind his work and now it looks like I will be out thousands of dollars to repair his mistake. My advice is to look elsewhere. Update on 8/3/15 - Sorry to say we have a massive crack going through the hot tub pad Mr. Barrett installed now too. I wonder if a heavy truck drove over that?

Response from Robert A Barrett Concrete
This members comments causes me concern. Concern for my reputation and Angie’s List rating. I feel that these comments are misleading. Knowing the member is running a farm I asked if anything heavier than a passenger vehicle would be on the concrete the member assured me that only passenger vehicles would be on the driveway. The concrete design mix we poured was a 4,500 PSI Mix with fiber reinforcing and poured 4” thick. The fiber mesh reinforcing works so well to keep a crack from separating that engineers have allowed it to replace wire mesh. I let all of my customers know that concrete by the nature of the product will crack and as contractors all we can do is install control joints where the concrete is most likely to crack. Also that if the concrete cracks outside of a control joint the fiber mesh will keep it from separating. When I went to look at the crack in this member’s concrete I found it was more than a crack that the concrete had been broken and pulled apart with a separation of a ½” or more in places. I told the member it would take a large truck with a wide wheel base and heavy load to cause this type of damage. The member reassured me that nothing heavier than a passenger vehicle had been on the concrete. I placed a tape measure next to the damaged area and took a photo showing how much damage and separation there was. I showed this photo to other professionals to get their opinion, everyone had the same response I had, “this concrete did not crack it had been broken.” The member’s comment that as spring approached they noticed a hair line crack I meet with the member on May 2, 2015, by the members time line this went from a hair line crack to a large break in the concrete in a very short amount of time. I have customers that have had a hair line crack in there concrete and 10 years later it is still a hair line crack. I offered to give the member an estimate to replace the broken section, I also suggested they have an independent company test the quality of my product. Another misleading part of this members comments is that due to a tree on one side of the driveway and an electric pole on the other that nothing larger than a passenger vehicle could access the front driveway, however while we were working on this part of the project and were able to bring two concrete trucks into the driveway without any problems. I consider and I’m sure most people would consider a concrete truck to be a large vehicle with a wide wheel base. I have 32 years of experience in the concrete trade and the 2015 season will be 20 years in business for myself. I have worked very hard to achieve the reputation we have. If this member would like us to remove the damaged area and replace it with new concrete I would do this for them at cost, meaning I will not make a profit on this repair, also I will not have any out of pocket expense. All I would ask in return is a retraction of the Angie’s List review of May 26th, 2015. Robert Barrett

The job went great. Working with Robert Barrett was wonderful. We got our original quote in May 2014. Unfortunately for us, we had some unexpected medical issues come up with a member of our family and had to hold off on spending money on anything that was not a necessity. Coming into this spring we were once again ready for a patio on our home for my family to enjoy. I contacted Robert and explained our circumstances and he graciously agreed to honor his 2014 pricing. He put us on the schedule for Monday, May 4th but explained that bad weather (rain) could cause our start date to be pushed back. He called me on Thursday, April 30th to let me know they were on time and he would be there Monday the 4th to get started as originally planned (despite the rain we had already had this spring). He and his crew showed up as promised between 8:30 and 9:00 AM ready to work. Robert's years of experience were evident on talking with him about the job and to help us make our final design decisions. He was transparent about everything he did, from the timing of the job, materials he would use, schedule, cost of change orders, contract terms and timing of payments, etc. I feel he was professional, honest, and trustworthy, not to mention pretty darn good working with concrete. He is without question one of the easiest contractors I have ever worked with. Robert, along with his team, took pride in their craftsmanship and did a very nice job.We are excited about how it turned out and ready to more fully enjoy our back yard living space! Schedule: Day 1 - Monday, 5/4/15: Finalized details of job including shape and dimensions, marked area, removed existing earth with Bobcat and dump truck, installed forms (lumber) for concrete to be poured for patio and steps, dug post holes in steps to prevent settling, and installed a #304 compacted gravel base. Day 2 - Tuesday, 5/5/15: Poured steps (concrete mix as follows: 6.5 bag mix, 6% AE, & #8 River Rock) Day 3 - Wednesday, 5/6/15: Exposed river rock on steps (by hosing off top layer of cement) Day 4 - Thursday, 5/7/15: Rain, no work was able to be completed Day 5 - Friday, 5/8/15: Poured patio and exposed river rock, saw cut control joints, and cleaned up the job site No work on weekend or Monday & Tuesday (weather related) Day 6 - Wednesday, 5/13/15: Sealed patio and steps with Surface Shine Brown EX sealant Getting the equipment to the backyard did damage the grass with a set of tire tracks along one side of our house and killed a section of grass next to the patio. We had to back fill around the patio and seed the lawn ourselves, however this was transparently mentioned to us in our contract.
Description of Work: Removed existing earth, installed a gravel base, poured an exposed aggregate concrete steps and patio with river rock, and applied one coat of a brown sealant. The original quoted dimensions of the patio were 20' x 18' with a 14' x 8' offset (we added a 26' x 4' section on the end with radius/rounded corners). The original quoted steps were 6' x 32" landing three 6, wide steps (we ended up doing just over 8' x 32" landing with two 8' x 16" steps).

Robert did an excellent job on the driveway. He was very professional, demonstrated a strong work ethic, provided excellent service and the driveway is beautiful. The work involved tearing out an old asphalt driveway that went straight into the garage and replacing part of that driveway with a concrete pad outside the garage and the then with topsoil out to the road. He then put in a new concrete driveway where an long gravel driveway existed. He also put in a drain in front of the garage where I have had water issues and also tile and drain at the curve of the driveway where the there has also been water issues because of the area being low. Robert gave me a quote for the work in the fall of 2014. Unfortunately the weather turned too cold too fast so the work could not be done. He assured me I would be the first job up in the spring and he was true to his word. He called at the beginning of March and we were able to get things scheduled during a time that was convenient for me. I was not at home during the work and Robert stayed in constant contact with me. There were several unexpected issues that arose during the job and he was prompt in calling me, offered possible solutions and was patient with all my questions and concerns. I have an underground dog fence that had to be cut during the work. He ran a pipe underneath the driveway and marked the two ends of the wire so I could easily have them reattached. He also put in piping that would allow me to add lights in the future if I wanted to. His quote was on target - the only thing that changed over the course of the job were some additional things I asked for. He said it would take about 8 days and he did finish the job on schedule, even with the changes I made. I would recommend him to anyone looking for this type of work. I love the finished product, as do all my neighbors!
