Description of Work: This firm rebuilt the stair-wall going down to the lower level of our house (we have a 4-level splilt). The wall had started to bow inward. The wall was removed, new concrete block was applied and reinforced and a drain was inserted into the wall, to lead overflow of water away from our house and reduce likelihood of mudroom flooding. |It was done quickly, in a few days and the work is very satisfactory. I had a problem with a dog that needed to stay outside in our yard while I was at work. The workers showed up and I needed to leave and I explained the problem. The dog is friendly and they took to her and she became a sort of mascot for the job. I would not have left her with them if they had minded at all. Anyway, when I came home, they had done part of the work and the dog was their buddy. It was finished in a few days and it looks so nice.

Description of Work: For almost a year we struggled with finding a reliable contractor to replace our front porch and steps. There were several including some large local companies that showed up and had little or no interest in following up. Each had their own excuse for not providing a quote or timely follow up in a respectable time frame or manner. We finally checked Angie's list to find GBR. They looked like the best contractor for our needs. They proved to be as good if not better than expected. There is no need to lower your expectations when looking for a solid masonry contractor. GRB may not be the cheapest you'll find but they will be the best for the money! We highly recommend GBR Masonry. Terry & Lisa Lanham

What a wonderful experience! All phone calls were returned in a timely manner. The estimate was preformed in a timely manner as well. Andrew was very professional, prompt and honest about the work that needed done. He was a bit more expensive than other companies, but you do get what you pay for. We were extremely happy with the finished product. Our chimney is at the back of our home where our patio is, unlike many other homes where it is on the side and out of sight. I was hesitant that you would be able to tell where the new work was done, not a chance. Andrew is very knowledgable and a skilled mason. I would not hesitate to hire him again.
Description of Work: Andrew installed a new chimney cap, repaired the top of the chimney (reset several courses of bricks) as well as quite a few places along the chimney where the mortar was crumbling. He also repaired a concrete block which was knocked out of our foundation. In addition he sealed the chimney.

It was rather difficult to find a company that did brick work, specifically, and I met the owner of the company and he was extremely helpful in deciding what dimentions to build the wall and was able to match the color the brick to my 60-year-old home spot-on. They put in a lot of time and effort putting in the footer for the wall and about a week later completed the wall. I didn't have to be there while they were working, and was able to still go to work and they made sure to keep me informed of everything they were doing and how the progress was going. I was very pleased with the finished product when I arrived home.
Description of Work: I had a hedge wall of evergreen shrubs removed by another company and had a brick garden wall put in instead, by GBR Masonry that is about 15 feet long and 3 feet high and was attached to my house with a piller on the opposite end.

AAA+++ Great work, fair price, great communication. I hate working with contractors because they do not listen to what you want or need, they want to work on their hours, not yours and my biggest complaint they do not communicate. GBR is the exact opposite! They were great to deal with. Andy (the mason) offered suggested alternatives which worked great for us, without cranking up the price. (I know that because I had three quotes). He came out when he said he would and did the work when he said he would. His wife, Danielle, works the phone/email like a champ. She was in constant contact with us and we knew what was going on, when it would be done and how the weather was impacting the work schedule - this was masonry work in Nov/December, so weather was a big factor. I had two major concerns that I raised to GBR. I was concerned (with good reason) that we might tear off the top layer and find the underlying concrete pad to be in bad shape, making the project much bigger than we originally thought. Andy offered a guaranteed maximum price if that happened. The pad was worse than expected and he did the extra work at the fee he agreed to. I was also concerned about weather, which did turn for the worse. GBR worked around it. Andy came over in the rain to do things like tearout and pressure-washing after the job was done. He never needed to put up a tent to keep rain off or add a heater to let the concrete set, so we were not charged that fee. Hire GBR - you will be happy you did!
Description of Work: The brick work on our front stoop had deteriorated because of an ice dam on our roof. We needed to have the old brick work torn out, repair the base and sidewalk and replace with stoop. Andy suggested a bluestone surface, instead of brick. It added character and stability. Definitely a good suggestion and most importantly, my wife likes it.

GBR promptly returned my call requesting information about their services and scheduled a time for an estimate. Andy Maclellan arrived as scheduled after calling ahead of time. A quote was forwarded electronically within two days of the visit. Due to some scheduling breaks for us, the work started a few days earlier than originally planned. Andy and his crew were always prompt, very friendly, and very courteous. They picked up the site each night and left it as presentable as possible. It was Andy's suggestion to use the blue stone for the flat surfaces since the stone would match some existing highlight features in our walkway and since he hand picks the stone. The stone surface is beatuiful and we are very satisfied with the results. It was a pleasure to work with GBR from start to finish.
Description of Work: They removed our existing brick entry steps and porch, replaced the footer for the steps, and rebuild the entire structure using brick for the risers and blue stone for the step treads and porch landing.

The surface of our porch was badly pitted due to winter salts. A previous contractor had resurfaced it, but that material was breaking off in big chunks. Our interaction with GBR Masonry started when I sent them an email with photos of our porch situation. Within a day or two, GBR returned my email and we set up an in-person appointment. For this and other meetings, Andy (I think he's GBR's owner) was on time and friendly. At the meeting and after taking a few measurements, Andy recommended replacing the porch slab to ensure that it met code restrictions on the height of our step on to the porch. GBR was professional, helpful and patient, even as we changed our minds twice about the design. We received an estimate for replacing the concrete slab within a few days. After talking it over with my spouse, I called Andy about the cost of doing something a bit more in character with our house. Andy brought over samples of unilock bricks and border options and we picked out what we liked. After more thought, we send Andy a photo of what we wanted and he brought over additional samples. Once we finalized the design, Andy personally selected and installed the cut stone and we think that what he found looks great. He accurately sloped the porch away from the house in two directions, which should reduce or eliminate the icing problem we've had for years. It was a big quality and workmanship advantage being able to agree on the design with the person who will be actually doing the masonry work --- nothing got lost in the translation. In the end, his design suggestions we great, his workmanship excellent, his team courteous and professional and he finished the job early and on budget.
Description of Work: GBR replaced the front porch on our home. They removed the handrail, removed and hauled away approximately 30 square feet of the concrete slab front porch, created a new concrete brick ledge using 4" block, installed and completed the installation with bluestone, natural-cleft pre-cut sandstone finish with siloxane sealant. The price included all labor, materials and additional power-washing work on the walkway.

Excellent! Workmanship is elevated to an art form! The glass block windows are beautiful! They were installed with great care and the mortar looks as smooth as butter. The existing framing was taken out quietly (even gently). I had concern that the cinder blocks surrounding the existing framing would be damaged during the removal process (I did NOT mention this concern to Andy and Ed at any time!) Imagine my pleasant surprise when I realized (because it was so quiet!) that they were taking extra care in doing the removal work intelligently, not with brute force (as was done at two other homes we owned over the years by two different popular companies in town). Am I ever glad we called GBR Masonry, instead of one of the other two companies! From past experience, I know they would NEVER have handled this tear-out portion of the work the way Andy and Ed did! Excellent process! Thank you! I was so impressed with what they were doing with the glass block windows, that I was prompted to inquire if they had an interest in also waterproofing the basement for us (I had given up finding the right company at the right price - I was going to enlist the help of my teenage niece to help me carry out this waterproofing project!) Thankfully, they WERE interested (fortuitously rain was predicted for the next day so they could NOT work OUTdoors on another project they had scheduled to work on for another homeowner) and agreed to carry out this INdoor work for us the next day (it did, indeed, rain as was forecast). What life savers they are! Thank you! I first found GBR Masonry at the BBB, then I cross-referenced the co. on Angie's List! Also, checked out their website... everything on their site about their work ethic is TRUE... GBR Masonry offers a variety of great services... lots of photos of their beautiful work (workmanship, quality)... once GBR Masonry is "discovered" by members of Angie's List, there certainly will be a long waiting list! This experience was unique, pleasant and totally unexpected! Can't recommend Andy (owner/mason) and Ed highly enough! GBR Masonry is a rare company, indeed! This is the way businesses should be conducted, but are not. High quality at a fair price (people taking pride in producing excellent quality work and charging only reasonable prices for same)! Also, treating the customer's home with utmost respect! Wow! My husband and I now absolutely know who to call in the future for any maintenance needs (our 2-story home's exterior is mostly brick). So glad to have found you! Thank you Andy and Ed for everything you've done to help tremendously improve the quality of my family's life (we will actually be able to use our basement now to do the laundry and also have FRESH AIR in this important area of the home!) - please stay as good as you are!
Description of Work: Removed 3 existing basement windows and installed glass block WITH VENTS (on first day - $650). Waterproofed (painted) 3 basement walls and primed 14 I-beams (on second day - $450). On North side of home, very kindly added one brick to existing hole located near soil level and mortared it in to the brick exterior, to keep flying/crawling insects out of home's living room. Andy was responsive and came out to the house quickly to give a free estimate. He was open and honest and recommended I call an expert for some repair work that was out of his ability. His estimate was far lower than his competitors and his attitude reassured me that he would do just as good if not better than them. We had some scheduling conflicts along the way and overall it took longer than I wanted to finish everything, but he was always easy to get a hold of by phone or email. In the end he went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with the work.
