I had a patio that some of the slate was coming up. I was going to have it rebuilt. Instead of rebuilding the existing stone they thought it better to put in new stone entirely. They did a magnificent job. These people are masons. They had the stone cut and put it down with mortar. The quality of the their work, the time and pride that they took. This took a good amount of time to finish but they were so conscious of the quality of their work that I am certain there is not a single flaw out there. They were just absolutely phenomenal people. They were a crew of 4. The owner, his wife, and 2 other people. They have worked together for some time. They arrived at 8:00 sharp in the morning and there were days they did not leave until 5 or 6. The work was just exceptional. I would recommend them to anyone. They came out and gave me an estimate. The work was done quickly and it was done exactly to the initial budget quotation. One of the most valuable things was that I would ask them what would this look like if this were done. They had the experience to say, yes this would look really good. I could rely on their judgement and experience about a matter in which I have no experience myself. I absolutely came to trust their judgement. They took some photos of the completed work they had done and they will use them. They had photos of work they had finished before they started my house and that work was beautiful. They had pictures on their cell phone and also by email. They sent the quote via email and they also had sent a hard copy that I could review and sign.
Description of Work: I last used GBR Masonry about the 9th of July to replace the slate floor of my patio. They put stone around the house completely. They put in the patio. They also did the front and back steps.

Although we did not proceed with project, we were very impressed by the knowledge and professionalism of GBR Masonry. They were friendly and easy to engage. They provided two quotes as requested. They were very informative on how the process would work. I would definitely contact them again if we decided to proceed with project.

Their initial response was good, but I did not ultimately use them. They came out to my house, took a look at it, and gave me the quote. I wanted them to make some adjustments to it and they never contacted me back. The process was fine, but I just ended up doing it and picking out something.

Danielle & Andy came over promptly to look at the planter. We were not sure if removal or rebuilding was the best plan, but the deterioration of the brick made the decision easy: tear it down. Danielle, Andy and Ed broke down the planter and removed all of the brick. They were careful to save some of the bricks for future use, telling us that bricks this size are no longer made. They brought over some limestone samples. We chose a sample and told them we wanted a random pattern of stone. We received a very prompt estimate and gave them a deposit for the stone. Work began about 3 weeks later. It took two days to complete the job. They also fixed up a couple of loose bricks on the front of our house at no additional charge. This is a great company. Danielle and Andy are very pleasant and professional. The work is of outstanding quality. They used an extra piece of limestone to make stepping stones so our mail carrier wouldn't track dirt on the porch. The work was done quickly, quietly and with great care. The crew was Andy, Danielle (who does her share of the stone work...not just office work), Ed and a stone-mason in training, Andrew. It was a pleasure having them work on our project. I would not hesitate to recommend for any stone work.
Description of Work: This was 2 related jobs. Job 1: Remove a brick planter from the front of our house that had collapsed. The entire front side had fallen off. Danielle & Andy came over and gave us an estimate for the removal of the planter. Job 2: Cover the remaining front porch concrete slab with limestone.

Initially Danielle and Andy came over to give us ideas of how they could remodel our existing fireplace to update the look and to accomodate a flat screen TV over the mantel. They advised us to check different stone places to look at samples. These included Columbus Builders Supply and Lang stone. We ultimately decided on real stone and went with Lang Stone. We also needed to remove the existing wood mantel and lower the mantel which we replaced with a rough cut limestone and also put this on the hearth. Danielle, Andy and Ed arrived on time on the day they started and did a magnificent job on our fireplace. Everything was cleaned up and we love our new look. We had also bought a new fireplace door from Lowe's that Danielle and Ed installed. This process took about 2 months from our initial inquiries to checking out the samples through the job completion. Danielle and Andy were always available by phone or in person for all questions and help with design. I would highly recommend GBR Masonry and would definitely use them again.

This was an awesome experience. I was provided several brick samples to choose from before the estimate was completed. Andy thoroughly explained the process and his idea about the design of the steps and sidewalk. Danielle was very responsive during the process. I saved a lot of time by being able to communicate with them via email. They always responded to my questions promptly. The finished product was even better than I expected. A lot of hard work was put into this to remove the old brick and mortar, reframe and rebuild the steps and expand and add brick on top of the existing sidewalk. The steps and sidewalk are now sized appropriately as a front door entrance. They went over and above to get the job done quickly by working on multiple 100 degree days! Their attention to detail was amazing. I couldn't be more pleased with the results!!

The quote amount was about $4500. We did not hire them. The process of getting the quote went fabulous. They were very thorough in describing to me what the process would look like and why the estimate was as high as it was. There were some particular details about the fireplace that they had to work around and deal with. So they were very thorough in their explanations. They were very professional. It finally ended up to be the cost issue as I just couldn’t afford to do it. They weren’t timely in responding to follow-up emails but they were timely with the initial quote.

Andy came to give us an opinion and estimate to fix our chimneys. His recommendations re: the work needed matched that of two other masonry services, but his estimate was more reasonable. He put us on on their calendar and came when he said he would. The work is excellent and he and his wife are delightful people.

My first contact with GBR Masonry was a phone inquiry in Mid -March 2012. I reached Danielle Maclellan and discussed our need. Later that same day I met Andy Maclellan when he stopped by to look over the problem and discuss replacement options and rough costs. It was clear that Andy was experienced and knowledgeable. I was also working with another contractor in an attempt to get a proposal for doing all or part of the prep work. But it turned out we were not a good fit for each other's needs. Our job was relatively small, approximately 40 square feet. Many contractors are looking for more profitable, large scope jobs. Andy quickly dropped off a written estimate and some sample materials for our consideration. My wife and I took a few days to discuss our options and called back asking for more samples. Danielle personally dropped them of right away. We picked our new stone, and contacted GBR again to work out some changes in the estimate. Andy was busy during this time at the beginning of his hectic season. Yet he always made time to respond to our questions and concerns promptly. Knowing our malodorous living situation, he found a way to work us into his schedule quickly after I finally gave him a signed contract. I provided a 40% down payment with the signed contract on about April 6th. And I paid the balance I owed him for the completed work on about April 20th. Andy personally worked with his crew to complete the job after my wife and I left from the house for the day. We are not always easy to please (though not unreasonable either). But we were very pleased with his work and the finished product. In fact, I was very impressed with the Maclellan's attitudes, teamwork, and integrity. I have worked with a large number of contractors over the years, not only as a homeowner, but also as a public employee responsible for a variety of facilities maintenance projects. The Maclellan's are among some of the best I've worked with. I delayed writing this review only because I wanted to be sure through the heat and rains of the summer and autumn, that the water leaks and odor problem from moisture penetration was solved. Though we had little rain this summer, the past several weeks have proven that our structural problem is solved. And the new wall is a major improvement to the appearance of the exterior of our home.
Description of Work: We needed to replace a roughly 50 year old stone fascia on the front of our home. We had water infiltrating the inner wall cavity creating an extremely musty odor inside our kitchen. Originally we planned to prepare the area for installation, either ourselves, or with the help of another contractor. Andy's work was limited to applying wire mesh, a scratch coat of mortar, then apply the stone. The price quoted was reasonable. But to ensure the integrity of the repair to prevent future water leakage, we decided to make one contractor responsible for the entire job. So we expanded the scope of work to include the removal of existing stone, adding insulation to the inner wall, installing plywood to be fixed to the house and wrapped in TYVEK paper, for stone work to be applied. The additional cost turned out to be very reasonable as well.

This project went great! When they came over to do an estimate they were the only company I felt really listened to what I was looking for, and I talked to at least 9 companies. We have a natural stone front on our house and wanted to build a stoop that blended with that look to create a clean transition. Andy pulled inspiration from the existing features, and was the only one to point out we had a limestone sill on our picture window and suggest we repeat that on the stair treads. They build a very strong foundation, and did a beautiful job finding stones that blended with the house. He was also extremely thoughtful with the placement of each stone. He even mixed the mortar so that it had the same texture as what was used in the 1950s! The result is incredible. Our house went from looking dated and a little gloomy to a cheery cottage look in the front. Danielle was fantastic to work with. She always responded right away to any questions we had and was a real pleasure to work with. Some of the companies I had come for quotes told me I would receive a quote in 2 days, but I didn't receive anything for several weeks. Danielle had it to me the next day, and had the work completed within the time frame they had estimated. They were polite and professional. And to top it off they corrected some grout work another company messed up from the year before. Our neighbors have all asked for their number as well. I cannot say enough good things about them!

Andy was outstanding from start to finish. He provided the most in-depth analysis of the problem situation that we faced (which was a combination of gaps in the mortar and water in portions of the basement). He accurately described options that we had, the costs, and the benefits of the various approaches. He was clear in saying what he could do, what the expected results would be, how long it would take. In the end, the project took the estimated time and came in at the expected cost. They were very good about cleaning up and also ensuring that there wasn't a mess in the first place. It has been several months since the work was done and we have had several major downpours, which used to result in significant water in our basement. We are quite pleased with the change in that situation since the work was done. This work was of very high quality with an Impressive result. Danielle handled all the scheduling details and she was also very pleasant to work with. We would most certainly recommend GBR.
Description of Work: We had GBR perform significant tuck pointing in the basement of both sides of our duplex. They also provided masonry work across the outside foundation of the majority of the house. The outside work required cutting the concrete across both foundations and then applying mortar across the base of the house.

Project went very smoothly from start to finish. Spoke with Danielle to set up the appointment. Andie, the owner, came out for the estimate. Both are professional and personable. We were told the work would be done sometime within the month. They were out within 3 weeks. Very happy with the results. A great job matching the grout to what is currently on the house. Greatly appreciated their attention to leave the site spotless.

My husband and I had already had a new comcrete deck constructed beside our home. We shopped around, looking for the best person to build our fireplace. At first we interviewed landscapers, but soon discovered that we could avoid having a middle man in the deal, and looked for masons. Andy fit the bill, coming in with great ideas and the right price. We had to wait a short while for him to begin the work, as he had several jobs he was completing, but we were expecting this and had other work to do to prepare for the fireplace work. (we needed a foundation for the fireplace beside the deck.) Once the work began, it proceeded as scheduled, and took about a week and a half to complete. Andy was there early every day and cleaned up before he and his team left every night. Our yard was left fairly intact, with only one place in the grass a bit damaged from equipment. (it was where the concrete machine was sitting)
Description of Work: Andy and his associates built an outdoor fireplace on our deck. He put benches going out from a gigantic firebox (he called it the Titanic!) which he worked with us to design. I enjoyed working with Andy and his lovely wife, who is his responsive office manager and contact person. He worked with us, allowing us to design what we wanted, which was a little out of the ordinary, as well as helping us design a fireplace that would work well with our home/setting and it looks beautiful. He was skilled, competen, prompt and easy to work with.
