About us

I am a one-man show. I do employ laborers from time to time but nobody that I wouldn't trust in my own home. I can and will recommend sub-contractors but I will not employ them to do part of a job. My goal is to start and finish one job at a time unless my customer needs me to give them time to complete a portion of a project.

Excellent experience all around. Small deck (12' along house, extends 8' into yard) needed to be temporarily removed to accomplish basement waterproofing. I contacted three firms from Angie's List; one did not do work like this, and the other's estimate was significantly higher than LW3 Carpentry's. Lou Wenner came out to scope the job soon after we talked and I found myself confident in him immediately. Since I'm an out of state landlord, I could not be on hand for the work and Lou and the waterproofer had to coordinate with each other directly. This worked fine, and as my friend and local agent told me, "You'd never know it was moved."
Description of Work: Disassembled and reassembled small deck to facilitate basement waterproofing.

Lou is a gem. He was the only one who said, "no problem" when we told him we wanted to keep our wood railing, the 2.5" posts and maintain the 1920s look of the house. Everyone else said it couldn't be done. Lou did it. He works on his own and is wonderful. We've had many compliments on the railings. He replaced what needed replaced and reused the posts that were good. He didn't waste any materials, came up with suggestions for achieving a more finished look and gave us exactly what we wanted. We'll be calling him for some inside work when the weather changes. We finally found our carpenter.
Description of Work: Lou replaced the railings and posts on our front porch.

Response from LW3 CARPENTRY LLC
Thank you for the great comments. To anyone reading these comments, I just need to clarify the "move your car" response. I verbally complimented the member for moving her car early in the morning before I got there because so many customers of mine tend to wait until I empty out my van and set up a shop in their driveway before they inform me that they need to leave. It was nice that she takes the initiative. I am trying to get used to asking before I empty my van. Also, I don't think she means that she does not like the fact that I am "easy to work with." I believe she meant that she liked this about me. At least I hope so.

Perfect experience. This is the 2nd time I employed this company to work on my side by side double. I was so pleased with the first experience that I did not hesitate to work with the company again. Lou came out, talked me through the project, offered me choices for the quality of the materials to be used, came up with a creative solution for ensuring that the balconies' railings were removable (so as to allow unhindered access to doors when moving furniture in or out of the 2nd floor), and completed the project promptly once begun. Very pleased with the quality of the work and the speed with which it was done. Also, the cost was much more reasonable than I anticipated.

Great. The only issue we had was the person who did the labor did not pick up the trash from the porch. We called Louis and he had to come back and pick it up.

Perfect experience. After I had Lou come out to look at the project he called me promptly with four options for replacing the floor and explained the pro and cons of each option. All other contractors contacted did not give me options or explain the pros and cons of their proposed solutions to my work. His estimate, even for the "gold" standard option, was reasonable and below the other estimates I received for the lesser options suggested by other contracts who also seemed to have less experience with these kind of jobs. Lou gave me a prompt and reasonable estimate on each option, gave me a reasonable start date, did the work promptly, kept the area clean, explained the project details each step of the way, checked in with me frequently as to my satisfaction with the work as it progressed, and met with me once the project was completed to ensure that I was satisfied. The finished work was stunning -- so much so that my neighbors want to replicate the look of the new porch! The project came in only slightly over estimate but Lou carefully explained why and I have no dissatisfaction related to that whatsoever. An incredibly positive experience and a superb ending. I have other projects already in the works for this gentleman!

We were soo happy with all the work. The dull lifeless wood floor was the most amazing transformation although the countertops and ceramic floor in the kitchen added a more upscale edge to our home. Louis started by pouring our Concrete Countertops. While they were being molded and completed, he began working on our wood cabinet repairs. He then worked to completed our ceramic floor and baseboards in the kitchen. When that was completed, he brought back the cabinets, concrete counter top pieces, new sink and faucet. He treated/sealed the counter top after installing. This portion of the job took about 10 days, but mostly due to the drying of the concrete. We trusted him to work in our home while we were not home as this is not the first time he worked for us. Finally, while we were out of town, Louis refinished our wood floor in the dining room which was beneficial for for us to have someone going in and out of the home. A sort of indirect house sitter.
Description of Work: They repaired wood cabinets, Removed vinyl floor in the kitchen/replaced with ceramic tile and wood kick boards, installed new sink and faucet with soap dispenser, refinished wood floor in dining area, concrete countertops with tempered class (you gotta see it to appreciate it)!

I was impressed with the reviews about LW3 Carpentry I read on Angie's List. Lou seemed very concerned about maintaining the historical integrity of older houses. Lou arrived to provide an estimate on time. The trap doors he installed cost less than similar work done by another carpenter. And, the quality was much higher. Resetting bars on a basement window where the bottom piece of wood had deteriorated took a great deal of skill. Other work was being done in part of the area where Lou was making repairs. He was very flexible in working around other contractors and got things done as quickly as possible. I plan to use Lou on other projects I plan for my home. He is an excellent service person.

Lew did a great job. He finished on time and in budget. There turned out to be more work than originally thought because of rotten wood underneath the roof. Installing the roll-top doors was a challenge but he handled it beautifully. The new doors took decades off our old garage.

When Lou came to look at my siding I had a gut feeling he was the right man for the job. He was kind, listened to my questions and didn't make me feel silly for not knowing some things. From the start he was always easy to get a hold of and really made a point to make sure he was providing the service I needed. Lou did an amazing job of securing new t1-ll siding on my home with precision beyond my expectations. The job was done in a matter of days and he cleaned up all scrap material. Great work at a great price.

I had been told to expect to pay well over $1000 for this repair. Lew did it for $650, and he did a remarkable job. The rotted sills were a violation with my city, and when the inspector looked at the work, he was very impressed. I have since hired Lew to do several more jobs around my house. He shows up exactly when he says he will, he does the work quickly and stays within the estimate.

Lou did an outstanding job raising the sagging floor to its original position. He designed a good solution to the problem, and the new support is far stronger than the original floor. Lou worked steadily throughout each day, planned his work and worked efficiently, and cleaned up the room when he was finished. He did an outstanding job of communication from the beginning, and is up-to-date on modern technologies. I was impressed with his ability and the work he did.
Description of Work: Repaired sagging floor by installing twin I-beams under the floor and reinforcing existing beams with new lumber to help support the load. The job was especially difficult because of the need to remove more than a dozen electrical lines in order to do the repair, and the need to work around existing water pipes, a drain pipe, and two large metal duct boxes hung beneath the floor containing steam radiators - all in a basement room about 5 feet high.

Lou does excellent work! I have used him several times in the past and would not hesitate to recommend him. His craftsmanship is outstanding. He is honest and fair. His pricing is excellent. He came when he said he would and he finished on time. He did a great job. Once he built the closet it caused a ceiling light to be off-center in the room. It also left the light switch out in a hallway, rather than in the new closet. He called me when he came upon the issue and suggested that he move the light box to the center of the room and install a switch inside the closet. He also suggested that he add a ceiling light to the hallway and use the existing light switch for that. I hadn't thought about either of those things and really appreciated his attention to detail. I would highly suggest LW3 Carpentry, without hesitation!

Lou was very professional and a pleasure to work with. I trusted him to work in my home while I was away at work. I came home to find beautiful new baseboards and no debris or sawdust. I was very pleased with his workmanship. Upon inspection (and I am a perfectionist) I found one baseboard seam that needed a bit of sanding. Lou attended to it to my complete satisfaction and explained that the walls were not completely straight. The wooden firewood box liner was a big challenge since the walls and opening of the firewood box are made of uneven brick and cinder block. Lou had to measure the opening and construct and paint a wooden liner with horizontal shelf making it the size of a small two-drawer filing cabinet. He then had to place the insulation above it and slide the wooden liner into the opening after chipping away some of the cinder block. The new liner & shelf completely change the corner of my room. Instead of an unusable eyesore that required plastic sheeting to stop the draft (and mice) from the attic above, I now have a beautiful, usable storage area that now holds two rectangular baskets. I am very pleased with it. Unfortunately, cold air was still coming in even after insulation had been installed above the box. So I just bought some black pipe insulation and pushed it into the small openings at the side of the black wooden liner until no more cold air could be felt. I am very happy with how it turned out. I would recommend Lou to family and friends and Angie's List members.
Description of Work: Removed old baseboards and installed new ones in my living room, dining room and hallway. Removed shutters and wooden stop from a pass through opening between my kitchen and living room. Also constructed a custom wooden liner and horizontal shelf for a built-in brick & cinder block firewood box next to my fireplace. The liner had to be constructed precisely, painted and insulation installed above it to prevent airflow from attic.

Lou was very professional and did a great job. The work was done very well and he was very friendly. We encountered a few problems with the way plumbing had previously been installed and with the size of the vanity cabinet, but Lou was able to correct all of the issues and make it work while staying within time and budget. I have already asked him to look into a couple other projects around my house.

LOU WAS VERY RESPONSIVE IN CALLING ME BACK (JUST A FEW HOURS AFTER I LEFT HIM A MESSAGE). HE WAS QUICK TO COME OUT AND MEET WITH ME AND PROVIDE AN ESTIMATE. THE QUALITY OF THE WORK HE DID WAS OUTSTANDING, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THAT MY HOUSE IS OLDER AND THE WALLS AND CEILING ARE UNEVEN. LOU MADE A NUMBER OF SUGGESTIONS THAT WERE HELPFUL IN MAKING THE PROJECT TURN OUT BETTER. I DID HAVE A BIT OF CLEANUP AFTER LOU LEFT (SAWDUST, REMOVING OLD TRIM), BUT I DIDN'T SPECIFICALLY ASK LOU TO DO THE CLEANUP WORK (MY GUESS IS THAT HE WOULD HAVE, BUT IT JUST WOULD HAVE ADDED TO THE PRICE).
Description of Work: LOU REMOVED ALL OF THE OLD BASEBOARDS, CHAIR RAIL, AND CROWN MOLDING IN OUR 600 SQ FT FINISHED BASEMENT AND REPLACED THEM WITH NEW TRIM. HE ALSO REPLACED THE HAND RAILING GOING INTO THE BASEMENT AND 8 OLD ELECTRICAL SWITCHES. HE ADDED A SOLID CORE DOOR BETWEEN THE FINISHED AND UNFINISHED PARTS OF THE BASEMENT.

From beginning to end, working with LW3 was a very professional experience. Lou communicated well as to the issues we faced and worked with me on a successful resolution to each. I pulled the home owner's permit and wanted to have ownership of the project. Lou had no problem working alongside me as I completed the work and lent extensive knowledge on the NEC code.
Description of Work: I pulled a permit from Lakewood to redo wiring to my garage and to upgrade my electrical panel. Although LW3 is not a licensed electrician, Lou lended extensive knowledge for the completion of my project and showed a high level of understanding of the NEC 2006 code. We referred to the NEC book throughout the project. LW3 was hired to assist me in burying a power line out to my garage. He also assisted in removing my many electrical junction boxes and installing a main electrical panel. We upgraded numerous visible electric lines to code and cleaned up a lot of unnecessary wiring. I passed the city inspection with no issues! He was impressed with the quality of the work performed.

Lou did an excellent job. He came on time for an estimate and kept the work within the budget (I added a couple of things that increased my costs). My neighbors apparently kept an eye on his work and stated he worked very hard everyday. He was the only carpenter who didn't have a preconception about what he wanted to build. He made some suggestions and built a porch I am very happy with. He was able to use my information and make it all work. He also took my renderings to the city, talked to me about their changes (the size of the posts), got approval and consulted with them regarding any questions. He was always professional, starting and completing the work on time which allowed the painters to start their work on the house on time. I have come home a couple of times to neighbors standing on my sidewalk looking at my porch. Two of my neighbors have had him repair their porches due to the work he did on mine. I used it all summer.
Description of Work: Lou completed work on a new front porch for my 100-year-old house. He checked the joists, put in new tongue and groove flooring, new posts, new railings (balusters and handrails), checked the structure of the porch roof and put on new shingles. He primed the wood for the flooring. He also added railings down the front steps which had not been there. I wanted to take the porch back to what I thought was the original post Victorian style. This included turned posts and balusters. The posts also had their own style. They were smaller with three on each end of the porch, two next to the steps and one in the middle. He also found a company to make half round gutters, taking it back to an original style.

The front door casing and associated trim on the front door of our 76 year-old brick colonial was finally giving up the ghost. I had been making band-aid repairs to it since moving into the house, but it was time to replace it. We decided we wanted to stay with wood to maintain the dimensions and "mass" of the casing rather than going with synthetics. We found Louis on Angie's List and gave him a call. Unlike some of the other carpenters who had looked at the job over the years--and either wanted to use urethane only or never called back--Louis took one look and said, "you have to stick with wood, you'll never get the same look otherwise." His overall attitude had already sold me, but then he said he thought he could strip and reuse some of the expensive components (dental molding, columns) rather than have it custom milled. Since I assumed the whole thing would have to be custom, this was a nice surprise. Long story short: a job beautifully done, on time and on budget.

They called back promptly and came to do an estimate promptly, but the supplying of the estimate was late. Through what may have been our fault, there was some difficulty with getting the estimate through email and when we tried to resolve it, we asked for the estimate and he told us he couldn't find it and would look in three months. I CERTAINLY APPRECIATE BEING ABLE TO RESPOND TO THIS REPORT. I SENT THE QUOTE TO THE EMAIL ADDRESS GIVEN. AFTER SOME TIME, THE CUSTOMER INQUIRED AS TO THE STATUS OF THE QUOTE. I INFORMED HER THAT I HAD SENT IT SOME TIME BEFORE. WE DISCOVERED THAT THE ADDRESS I SENT IT TO WAS WRONG. I AM PRETTY SURE THAT I DIDN'T TELL THE CUSTOMER THAT I WOULD LOOK FOR THE EMAIL IN THREE MONTHS. FOR SOME REASON THE QUOTE WAS NOT SAVED IN MY COMPUTER, SO I STOPPED OVER HER HOUSE WITHIN A COUPLE OF WEEKS WHEN I WAS IN THE AREA TO LOOK AT IT AGAIN. NOW THAT I HAD HER REAL EMAIL ADDRESS I RE-SENT THE QUOTE BUT ALSO TOLD HER THAT I WAS BOOKED FOR THE NEXT THREE MONTHS AND THAT I WOULD UNDERSTAND IF SHE HAD TO GO WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

Lou did a great job. Timely, well made, and cost effective in all steps of the process. He was even able to continue work during an untimely power outage by supplying his own generator (and gas). He also provided good suggestions/solutions to a few construction challenges in the context of what I needed him to do. I'm extremely satisfied with his work.

Lou did a terrific job. He actually called me back when I initially called him and showed up on time for the estimate. In the end, he came within $82 of his quote. He detailed ahead of time what he would need to do and how he would do most of it. He was always there when he said he would be and did talk with me when he had to change one of his days. He was conservative about the need for pieces of siding to be replaced and was very careful with my money. Some carpenters wanted to tear off entire sections (not pieces), didn't have concerns about what I wanted or didn't return calls. After having talked to several carpenters he was the most reasonable, very reliable and actually cared what I wanted done. I was at work when he was there but my neighbor told me he worked hard and they liked him and the work he completed. In the next couple of weeks I am going to be working with him on an estimate for my new front porch.
Description of Work: I have a 100 year old Victorian style home with the original Redwood siding. Many pieces of siding and detail woodwork needed to be replaced or repaired before any painting could begin. Lou had to work around the dormers, the bay window, muddy flowerbeds, and cut pieces to match the replaced pieces (siding and fish-scale). He had to carefully remove the old pieces and slide in the new pieces.
