I am a one-man show. I do employ laborers from time to time but nobody that I wouldn't trust in my own home. I can and will recommend sub-contractors but I will not employ them to do part of a job. I called and explained my need, and Lou responded promptly. He fit me into his schedule over the holiday weekend, because he knew he had a big job coming up and I needed the work done sooner (since my new insurance co was requiring it). He came out and asked med a good amount of questions, and explained the work he would do. He showed up the next day and built the stairs, the job was done very well and very quickly. I would have liked if he had been able to get rid of the lumber for the old stairs, but to be fair we never had discussed that, and so it is fine. I may have to have him come out again, since a small piece between the railing and the post has a split, but Lou seems great and has told me if there are problems to contact him and he'll take care of it. I am very pleased with the quality and sturdiness of the stairs and overal Lou's professionalism.
Description of Work: Removed old stairs and built new stairs, including putting in new posts and adding a railing that was required by my new insurance company.

Lou came looked at our areas and gave us a fair estimate. He replaced the dry rot, put down a hardwood maple floor, and replaced the door with a beautiful door we found at RESTORE ,which he he redid the jam for. Lou was knowledgeable, very skilled, efficient, and great to work with from start to finish. His work was beautiful and transformed the entire areas. This is the second time we have used him and would definitely use his services again.
Description of Work: We had dry rot on our porch and needed a new porch door as well as laminate needed in a counter upstairs, along with an unfinishedcarpentry job.

We plan on using him again to redo a bathroom.
Description of Work: We had our third floor gutted, insulated, electrical wiring brought up to code, dry walled and mudded , and new windows installed. It was done on time and as described. Lu always communicated and clarified any questions we had. He listened to what we wanted to do and was able to present the pros and cons of our ideas, but always went with what we wanted. I was amazed at how he managed to haul away all the old stuff in the third floor with out spreading the dust and debris to the other floors. He prepped the walls so all I had to do was to come and paint them the colors I wanted.

We have used Lou before and continue to be satisfied with his work. We had 6 different-sized skylights replaced and needed to finish the woodwork where each new skylight met the existing drywall or plaster. Lou walked through each one and came back the next day with a couple different ideas about how to do the work. We agreed on what trim he would use. We had a couple unusual angles around the largest skylights in the kitchen and he took the time to figure out how to cut and install that trim so that there are no uneven edges. They all really look great!

I have an old house where nothing is easy to fix and Lou came out very promptly to give an estimate and thoroughly explained what he wanted to do and why. After hiring him he was very accommodating with scheduling his work and arrived right on time. When he noticed the beams holding my roof were in worse shape then they appeared he called to give me options and recommendations. The final product looks amazing and I know is extremely sturdy. My Mother was present when he was working and he made sure to show her what he was doing along the way. He was extremely polite, cleaned-up well and listened to any questions I had. I have already had comments from neighbors about how nice it looks and it's still bare cedar planks! Lou even called the night after he completed his work to check in with what I thought. I would definitely recommend him to any friends or family who could use his services.
Description of Work: Remove old beams from a porch roof that has sunk over 4 inches in the middle and reinforce failing dormers with metal brackets. Added cedar planks for strength and look.

As others have said, his quote was the best in terms of price. Lou is very professional, responsive and stays in touch, which is nice considering my experience with other contractors. Lou completed and forwarded paperwork to me immediately. His price was extremely reasonable. However, since then my scope of work has changed and I went with another contractor that I'm more familiar with, but I would definately use Lou in the future. Good luck everyone!

Excellent job. The rear porch to our 100 year old home had buckled. The entire floor and staircase needed to be replaced. Lou was responsive from our first contact with him. He came out and provided recommendations for the work to be performed and the materials that should be used. The job required him to lift the roof to the porch so he could replace all of the floor boards, and he laid a proper foundation to stabilize the stair case. He stayed completely within our budget and was on target with his estimate. The job took a few days to complete, but it was worth it. It looks great.

The work was wonderful. We had one little area that was slightly damaged by his new sill work. (He couldn't see the damage because we had accidently locked the porch door).. He came out and fixed the area immediately, even going beyond and fixing a small little piece of wood that also had dry rot. Wonderful to work with

Response from LW3 CARPENTRY LLC
I usually don't respond to my reports unless I feel as though I can justify why the customer felt the way they did when writing the report. In this case, and for future occasions, I would like to explain my process for getting in touch with potential customers. I do not take calls at work from anybody, except family. I do not feel as though it is fair to the current customer that I am taking calls from potential customers. Usually I sit down after work and go through all of my voice mails. I write down, in a notebook, the names and numbers and any pertinent information given. I usually try to call all numbers back by 6 pm or I call them back by the end of the next business day. When I saw this name in this report I looked for it in my list. My list goes back to the beginning of the year and I cannot find this name. Is it possible she thought she called me and didn't? Is it possible that something happened to my voice mail system? I do not know. But it was not in the list. My apologies.

HIs quote was 1/2 the other quote I received. Usually going with the lowest quote is a risk but in the case it was the right thing to do. On time. He said it would lake about 2 hours. In 2 hours trim installed.Good job left the room clean.

It was a good experience to work with Lou. We would work with Lou again.
Description of Work: Lou was great to work with on our siding project. He removed and installed new cedar siding on one section of our home. He added Tyvek house wrap which was not previously there. The project took 3 days. One day longer due to the weather. When he said he would get us information, he got it to us on time. He is very responsive. He performed great work for a great price.

We left a message to ask for a quote, he called back promptly, and we scheduled a date/time. He arrived a day early, didn't say too much and couldn't give much information, even a ballpark number, as to price, etc. Maybe it was a bad day but he seemed distracted/disorganized. Once he had my email address, he did promptly send a quote.

The member wanted a half moon floating deck. Before I leave a home from looking at the proposed project I must make sure I know how I am going to accomplish the vision that the customer has for their project. Never having built a half moon deck before, I have to say I was in deep thought as I tried to figure out the best possible way to design and quote this project.

Got number from real estate agent. Recieved quote for refinishing basement. Started job on time but charged us for labor when he wasn't able to get something done because of another contractor was present. Not a real make customer happy kind of guy. Wanted to take alot of short cuts to make his money and get the heck out of there. After job was completed the labor was about 20% more than what we expected. He said that he quoted time and material and that if you wanted it based on contract price then when should of said something intially. He did and average job. We would not use him again or recommend him to anyone.

Response from LW3 CARPENTRY LLC
I looked at this project and sent Member the quote. In it I clearly stated the price but also stated that it was a "time and material" job and that the price could go up or down depending on any changes or unforeseen and unexpected issues. I was hired to demolish old but not original walls in his basement and build new walls. After demolishing the old walls there were a couple of issues. One, we found a door that was boarded over. The doorway led to a storage room under the front porch. Of course because it was drywalled over, I did not know it was there when I quoted the job. Member wanted the door functional which took some extra work since the jamb was no longer square. Two, there was the original lathe and plaster wall behind the other wall. Member wanted it removed. I commented to Member that it would be better to leave it there as it helped insulate the final wall. We honored his wishes but it took extra time since I was not aware that it was there when I quoted the job. Three, there is a crawl space on the side of the house and Member wanted the finish side studded so that it could be insulated. He already was planning on insulating the exterior walls of the crawl space, so it is not necessary to insulate interior walls. I expressed this to him but I don't think he totally understood my point. I honored his wishes and studded the walls the way he wanted. There were a couple of other minor issues that Member had me complete that added to the extra cost in labor. I do not understand his statement "Started job on time but charged us for labor when he wasn't able to get something done because of another contractor was present." Member paid me from week to week after I gave them my detailed hours and supplies. There was no such thing as "wanted to make his money and get the heck out of there." I was being paid hourly, we did not have a contract dollar amount. But I will admit that I did want to get out of there. I had a job scheduled after his and from day one Member and I bumped heads because he thought I was trying to take "shortcuts". The truth is that I did not want to see Member throw his money away where he didn't have to. We were already behind schedule from the unexpected issues and he seemed very disappointed when I had to turn down his request to refinish the basement bathroom while I was there. I was not willing to push back another customer to accommodate Member. Member's wife was home most of the time and we seemed to get along pretty good. Member was at work most of the time(I believe he wrote this report not his wife). A lot of issues were discussed between Member's wife and I and it seemed as though there was a lack of communication between them because I would get an "ok" from her but then he would complain about it afterward. After receiving my last payment I detailed a list for Member listing every aspect of the job. I was surprised when he pointed out the fact that we were over-budget by 20%. I re-iterated all of the overages and his comment was "but your price was a bid." I had to remind him to re-read the email. I never heard from him again.

I have steel french doors with a thin molded wood seperator between the doors. My dog chewed the bottom part of this wood to where it was unrepairable. couldn't have gone better. Lou is the consummate professional. A pleasure to have around. He told us it would take about 8 workdays, and that's what it took. And the final product perfectly matched our expectations.

From start to finish, Lou and LW3 Carpentry did a fantastic job with our bathroom renovation. We called Lou based on great work that he completed in a full kitchen renovation a year prior. He accommodated our schedule and rearranged his jobs so we could have our bathroom done by the end of the year. As with our previous experience, we consulted with Lou on the plan and then we provided the materials (with his guidance) to complete the job. Lou understood our style and offered suggestions to improve the layout and construction where he could, but also respected our wants and made sure we were satisfied with the end result. For instance, he suggested that we tear out the old tile floor to make sure the new one was level and sound - even though it took more effort, we were glad he suggested it. He ran all new electrical/GFCI to the panel. He also waterproofed and built our custom class tile shower, in addition to the ceramic tile floor and walls. He also worked with our plumber to make sure everything worked together. Overall, Lou has a 'can-do' attitude and can see a project through from start to finish. He has diverse construction skills and finishes to a high quality. We have referred him to friends and family and will be calling LW3 Carpentry when we need additional work done. We are very satisfied!

We needed to replace our porch railings top and bottom segments. I wanted wood railings and everyone I contacted said it couldn't be done. Then I found Lou. His response when I told him what I wanted..."No problem". And, it wasn't. He gave me an estimate, showed up and did the work. He was a joy to work with. He does his own work with his own equipment. He is a professional who takes obvious pride in doing the work right. I thought I'd submitted this report at the time, but guess I am wrong. He deserves to be known. I was really disappointed in the response I got. I was up against a deadline & I explained that the first time I spoke with Lou. He couldn't come out the day I called him because it was his wife's birthday....WHAT??? We set up an appointment the next morning. I overslept, but got to the house within 10 minutes of the appointment. Waited a half hour & nothing. Lou called when I got home & apologized that he too had overslept, but would be able to stop after work. I explained that I had to go to work, but my son lives in the house & would be there. The agreed-upon time was 5:00. My son put a note on the front door at 5:00 with his cell phone number because he was upstairs sanding. No show. When I got home from work at 10:30, there was a message from Lou that he had been there at 4:30, and no one answered the door. That was a half hour earlier than the time set. I talked with him the next day & he told me that he would be working too late to stop over. He proceeded to tell me that he was extremely busy with some personal matters & really didn't want to do the job. This was the day BEFORE the city had given me to have a signed contract. Fortunately, I found some real craftsmen who have done a phenomenal job!

Response from LW3 CARPENTRY LLC
This report certainly warrants a response. I am pretty much a crew of one. I have a few guys that help me sometimes but they are just laborers. I work primarily 9 to 5. When I get calls to look at jobs, I either need to look at them on the weekends or go after work during the week. Obviously, during the week cuts into my family life which I hold sacred. In short, I will not sacrifice my family life for work. I know there are some customers that want people like me to bend over backwards for them. I will try to do what I can with limits. The member called me and expected me to meet up that same day although I had plans with my wife and kids on her birthday. Sorry, there is no way I am doing that. We were up late that night and yes I missed the morning appointment. That very rarely happens but it did in this case. She and I set up for what she says was 5 pm. Since I have been doing this job a long time, I am pretty sure I said "around" 5. Of course this is a "he said she said" argument, but I know that I am going to look at this job after work and traffic is always a concern. I usually tell people "around" a specific time. That means I could run a few minutes late or a few minutes early. Never more that 15 minutes or so. So I got there early, it was about 4:40, I knocked on the front door as hard as I could because there was no doorbell. I could not go to the back door because there was a dog back there. I knocked and waited for about ten minutes. I waited because there was a pick-up in the driveway and figured someone was there. After that I went to my van which was parked in front and called her, no answer. I waited there for another five minutes which puts us at about 4:55. How could I have guessed that he was upstairs sanding and was going to come down at exactly 5 pm? I felt like I waited long enough and left. The next day when we talked I told her I could not stop by that night and the rest of the week was booked. My wife and I were going through Child Foster and Adoption classes that were 2 nights a week and all day Saturday. I did not tell her that "I did not want the work". I told her I could not get her a written bid to the city by her deadline. I felt like this was the best thing for both of us since I was not the only contractor that she had contacted. Obviously she had someone lined up who could get her contract on time and completed her work. I am glad that she took the time to post a report although the only thing I feel that I am guilty of is not having enough time to actually put together a contract. I believe she called me on Monday and needed a contract by Friday. This is a challenging feat for me since it is just I trying to keep my business running.

They did a good job. They were referred to from one of our friends. We got several estimates and they were the only people that actually called underneath the porch to check out the support before they gave us the estimate. Everyone else walked around and eyeballed it from the surface and said that the whole structure needed to be replaced. The fact that they were referred to us by our friend had given us a lot of confidence and how professional they would handle the job. My overall experience with them was very good. We would consider them in the future depending on what work had to be done.
