We love working with Wes at Marvin's Organic Gardens. He has a great personality, and he has great landscaping ideas. He know his plants and how to care for them. The staff that he sends out to get our beds ready for both the winter and the spring are terrific. They do a great job, and we love how our landscaping looks.

It went great! They put in a beautiful landscaping - replacing some areas, utilizing some existing plants and adding a totally new "island" of landscaping next to the driveway. Over 65 new plants were put in. They also installed a new lamp post and dug a trench to meet code for the lamp post wire. The trench-digging was a late addition and they handled it easily.
Description of Work: We wanted some advice/designs for the landscaping around the house. We originally hired Marvin's via an Angie's List Deal ($49 Landscaping Evaluation). Wes was great to work with and you can tell he has a passion for his work. He provided an estimate and broke it out into different phases for the front and back yard. He also provided options for specific plants. We hired them to do the front yard portions.

We split the complete re-landscaping of our front yard into 3 phases (over 3 years), and the third phase was just completed. We were extremely pleased with the design, responsiveness, quality of work, and overall result. After the first phase was complete, when it appeared that deer had damaged the azaleas, Marvin's Organic Gardens replaced these plants with a different species that has flourished. In addition to designing and installing the plantscape, Wes also provided advice about trimming and cabling the existing trees, getting rid of moles, and preventing deer from damaging other plants. We highly recommend Wes and Marvin's Organic Gardens!

I had a really bad experience with them. They were a Super Service winner at some point, and at the end of it I wasn't happy with them. They tried to threaten me with a bad review if I wrote a bad review on them. They promised me something, gave me a quote, and then weren't able to deliver as promised. Then they tried to up charge me several times. They quoted me $8,000 and it ended up costing $12,000. They weren't able to estimate correctly, and then they would tell me things in person saying they were going to do this and do that. When they did the work, they would say that they didn't write in the contract like that, so too bad. They seeded my yard even though it wasn't in the contract, I told them that wasn't part of it, and I had too pay for it anyways. They did work that wasn't in the contract and then expected me to pay for it.
Description of Work: Marvin's Organic Gardens did some yard work. It took two weeks to finish. They leveled out my backyard. They added soil to make a flat area. They ground some stumps up, and diverted some water. They brought in 200 tons of soil, and connected a pipe to the gutters to make it go farther out.

We appreciate your feedback and grateful for the opportunity to transform your backyard from an unusable hillside, into a large level yard that can now be used for your children's play set, Your children now have safe, level lawn to run and play. We corrected all future drainage issues with a series of catchment pipe, to eliminate mosquitoes and unsafe standing water from your yard. Customer requested additional soil to extend backyard level grade, which was estimated, signed and accepted by homeowner. Homeowner loved the work we did, but refused to pay the final balance once they received our invoice, because they admitted that they overextended their budget. For as strong of a review as they gave, they were 100% happy with the project, but simply didn't factor the additional cost of soil, labor and equipment that was implemented only after they accepted the project with a signed/dated proposal. We were careful to provide daily records for the homeowner to prevent miscommunication.

This company provides best personalized full service landscape/hardscape design and maintenance we have ever had!! And we have tried quite a few. The three gentlemen that are coming this year are just the best ever!! They are so professional and knowledgeable about their work - not just the typical landscapers/mulchers. You can tell how much they love what they do. They do monthly weeding, trimming, pruning and whatever else we request/need for the landscape beds. In the fall they will remove all leaves from the yard. They do charge more than your average landscape company but for us it is worth every penny and then some!!

The Marvin's Organic Gardens staff was excellent to work with. They were always on top of it from Audrey in the office to Wes in consulting and estimating to the installers, Kyle, TJ, Josh. Everything was completed to our expectations. The completed stonework looks awesome. The installers worked in the hottest days this summer, between thunder showers and in the mud after the showers. The work started as promised and ended as promised, taking the rain into consideration. Those involved with the onsite work were knowledgeable about their work as well as plants and landscaping. A couple of job changes were taken in stride. One can tell this is a family business. Professional. A pleasure to do business with. I would certainly have Marvin's Organic Gardens work for me in the future.
Description of Work: Removed old stonework from 3 places in our front yard, replacing with cut, natural stone. Added a semi-circle of the same natural stone around a tree round. Used some of the old stone to build a border around part of an existing perennial bed. Balance of removed stone was carried to back of our lot for future use.

Marvin's Organic Gardens sent a crew of three guys to do the work. It took them two and a half days, and they did a good job, but there were a few problems. Overall, the yard looks great and we're very happy with it. The biggest problem was with the side bed on the house. Wes said the bed would be removed, graded away from the house, and seeded with grass, with only small mulch rings around the roses planted there. It was not spelled out in the written contract, but we assumed it would be communicated to the crew. Instead, the crew weeded the bed and remulched it. When I asked the foreman about it, he said Wes hadn't told them to clear and seed it. He said it would be easier to maintain as a mulched bed, but that is not what we wanted. Now (two weeks later) weeds are already coming back in the bed. A smaller issue is that they completely cleared a small bed by the street. We'd asked only that the maiden grass from that bed be removed, and in clearing it, we lost a prized iris and a clematis that had been a gift from my wife's grandmother. They apologized for the mistake, but did not offer to replace the lost plants. Other than those two disappointments, we are very pleased with the work they did, and our yard looks much nicer as a result.
Description of Work: We had several large flower beds in our yard that we wanted removed, regraded, and seeded with grass. Wes met with my wife and I and walked the property, and had some great suggestions. He seemed to get what our goal was (low/zero maintenance landscape), and wrote up a detailed estimate. It was higher than the other two estimates we got, but Wes seemed more knowledgeable and his plan was more detailed.

I had to wait several weeks for a consultation, but Wes was friendly and knowledgeable and a pleasure to deal with. He provided estimates for all of the work, including a few options so that there were no surprises when we decided to make a change to the scope of work. His workers were prompt and friendly and completed the work on the original schedule even though the change we made added some work. They even used some spare dirt to level a patch where some trees had been removed a couple of months ago! Everything looks great and I'm very happy with the work they provided and the manner in which they provided it from start to finish.
Description of Work: Remove hedges and replace with gravel around the front and sides of the house. Remove three plants and grind out an old tree stump on the front lawn. Clear the weeds and clear debris from a large patch in the backyard. Re-seed areas as needed.

Wes and his team were great. They installed our path about 5 years ago, but due to a nearby oak tree, the path suffered significant root damage. We should have kept them at bay ourselves, but didn't realize until it was too late. Wes came out and gave us a quote on the repairs. His team was courteous and efficient, finishing quicker than estimated. They explained how to keep the roots at bay myself to prevent future damage. They even punched up a few other loose landscaping stones here and there. I'm glad I had them back, our path looks great again.

We had Marvin's come out to the house to provide one of three estimates for some spring clean-up work around our house. This included weeding flower beds, trimming bushes, spreading mulch, etc. Their estimate was the highest of the three that we received, but they provided a very favorable impression and said that they would complete the job faster than the other bidders, so we went with them. They required a 50% deposit by check and would not schedule the job until they had the check in hand. That was annoying, but I mailed the check. They received it a week later. By that time, their schedule had filled and they could not complete my job when they had promised. Instead, they scheduled it for the same week as my "second place" bidder. Again, I grumbled a little, but decided to press on with them. The real issue occurred when they arrived to do the job. I received a call stating that they were at my house ready to begin, but that the cost would be, at best, twice what they had bid and perhaps more. Clearly, my yard and the flower beds had not grown in that time. Instead, they reason that they gave was that the weeds had grown in the interim. Well imagine my shock to learn that weeds had grown during spring! Whoever could have imagined such a thing! The options that were provided to me were to (1) pay them twice as much (or more) for the job (which was already my highest estimate), (2) keep the price the same and have them half the job, or (3) cancel the whole thing and have my deposit returned. Since I thought that it was ridiculous to double the price because weeds grew in the intervening period, I canceled the job and rescheduled with another crew. That organization stuck to their estimate and did a wonderful job. To Marvin's credit, they did promptly return my deposit check.

We appreciate your feedback, and value the learning that comes with it. By the time we received your project acceptance and were able to schedule, your weeds had fully taken over your beds, some as tall as six feet. We communicated clearly that we would require more labor to remove a greater quantity and size of weeds, as described in your proposal, because More than a month had passed in between our first visit, job acceptance and scheduling. We understand your frustration, and grateful to use this challenge as a learning opportunity.

I would say it's especially nice to work with a small local business and support them when you feel and know they are truly passionate about what they do - and we definitely felt that with Wes and Diantha. Also, the landscaping crew that they contract out to put in the plants/cleanup were extremely nice, fast, professional and personable. Wes has an unique, positive energy about him and he is full of knowledge when it comes to what you need outside. Diantha was always very positive in her communication over the phone and email. My only thought on how the experience could've been better is to provide some information on care for the plants. Last year I was under the impression Wes was going to be present while the plants went in so that I could ask questions, but he wasn't. He was there at the beginning to introduce me to the crew and when I came back out at the end he was gone. I totally understand they are a small business and he can only be so many places at once, I was just craving for a little more information last year when the plants went in as to "now what" (how do I care for them, etc). Even if they had given me a basic info sheet on how best to care for each plant along with the design they gave me that probably would've helped. In the last visit, this year, he took the time to explain each plant and how to best care for it / get the most out of it each season - but this was only after I made sure to be there when he was going to be there and to push to ask questions (it's not communicated clearly when he will be there and his trip was outside of the 'cleanup' crew time - it was to replace a plant) so I couldn't help but feel like me asking these questions was taking up his time/out of line of what they want to do. I also know if I do enough research online I could find the answers but I was hoping if we're paying for the professional service and his expertise that the information would be provided from his perspective as I value his expertise.
Description of Work: We had Marvin's Organic Gardens out last June of 2015 to design and put in our front landscape - that cost was about $1,700. And most recently, April 2016, we had them come back out for a landscaping cleanup (trim, fertilize and add mulch) for about $700.

Marvin's had come out several times to help with our problem grass and they've been super responsive to all of our questions and concerns. Sometimes they take a little time to get back to us, but they do and usually it's with a personal visit. We use them throughout the year, so can't say specific dates of service or cost, but I highly recommend especially if you're looking for non-chemical treatments and knowledge. A bit pricey, but worth it for the fact that they do not use the typical chemical treatments, etc.
