They did a very good job. Everything just looks really nice. We were not in a big hurry, so they did not come out right away. But they were responsive and punctual, just not as quick to respond as if I needed them right away. I tol them I was in no big hurry.
Description of Work: They replaced basement window walls with a retaining wall with a water feature. They did some excavating around the basement windows.

Everyone at Marvin's is extremely nice. We wanted to support organic gardening so we made an appointment for them to come out and help with our brand new construction lot. The first year Frank came out and gave us a thorough idea of what they could do. We were impressed and wanted them to get started. For months no one returned calls. Then seasons changed and we decided to try them once more the following spring. This time Frank came out and provided us with a patio design--which again, we liked and wanted them to get started. They came out and cleared a 125' treeline mulch bed, lined it with weed fabric and installed mulch. Things happened but it's a part of the business--covered our drain, their truck broke down in our yard, they had no edger. But everyone was so nice and we were pleased with the work until THIS year when we called 3 other companies for estimates to maintain the bed and they pointed out that there were no pins in the fabric--which had shifted under the mulch and now needs complete replacement. The bigger issue is that there was no drainage and the rain is washing all the mulch down the hill. Frank did mention installing a rain garden but for "fun" not a necessity. Least of our worries though. This cost approximately $2500--lasted two seasons. The patio took from Spring 2009 until the end of October 2009 I believe to finish. We called them back because the top of the stair sank. The repaired it with an epoxy tar-like product which looks like asphalt. I don't think it has moved further. The stairs are gorgeous even though there are a few holes large enough for our children to put a few fingers in there and get stuck. We noticed the seat walls leaning last fall and called them to come take a look. As usual, no one ever responds. We called 3 other companies and they all agreed that the entire patio was built on a slope and the deep side has no support to hold the patio in place. It is surrounded by a mulch bed but apparently nothing supports it so the border is pulling away, the seats are glued to the border... They all said the pavers could be reused but for safety the patio should be replaced. The stairs are flush to the back door which could be a water issue in the future if the top stair should sink again. This cost $6500. Before discovering the patio, the next spring after they installed it, we called to have compost, mulch and weed fabric delivered. They forgot the fabric and everywhere we planted their compost and mulch, a fierce amount of weeds grew killing most of our plants. Where we did not plant the compost/mulch, things were fine with "normal" weeds. When we called, no one responded. So we went out there. The woman in the shop said we were so nice and GAVE us 20 bags mulch for free for the hassle of waiting for a call back. When Wes finally contacted us, he said we were unhappy people who could not be pleased so too bad. He had been reading a book on complaints so apparently he must have been getting a lot of them. We assured him we have always paid, always done OUR part. We have NEVER complained--except when they buried our drain and the stairs were sinking. Their truck had broken down in our yard and they left it there for weeks--we couldn't go into our yard with children--it was in the incline position and could have come slamming down at any point. We told him we would file a complaint with the BBB if he did not come LOOK at the yard and he said go ahead that they were cancelling their membership anyway. The delivery of mulch and compost was approximately $2000. So I have been calling about months over the patio and filed another complaint with the BBB yesterday. My husband warned me not to use them, a few paver companies suggested the same... but I wanted to support organic gardening and everyone was so completely nice. Hard to believe we have spent SO MUCH MONEY for basically nothing to show for it. Everything needs redone. And I studied horticulture as my science requirement in college, worked in a greenhouse, revamped our previous yard into something wonderful. Until last week, every product in this yard was from Marvins--the corn gluten for the lawn, fertilizer, compost, mulch, etc... And the weeds didn't "blow in" because we don't even have some of these varieties in this area. This yard is a blank slate--WAS... and now who knows what it will take to get them to come out and/or give us our money back so we can have a different company re-do the work. We let most of the mulch beds go back to grass after throwing away the plants and digging out the concentrated weed bunches. We are so disappointed that we have paid so much, worked so hard, and have nothing to show for it. And our patio/seat walls could actually be a safety issue very soon. The worse part is they refuse to come look at what they have done. Wes even threatened to call the police on us if we came back to the store--which they happen to have a pitbull walking freely around so I'm not sure what he thought we would do? I didn't even want to take my 2 and 4 year old out of the car after seeing the dog. It really is an expensive lesson to learn. $11,000 to this company and they cannot even LOOK at what they have done? UPDATED MAY 20, 2012: Marvin's finally returned our call and an assistant to the landscaping manager scheduled a time to come out and look at the patio to see why it is failing. She was very nice. Then she called back to say that our year warranty was up and they were no longer interested in our business. My husband explained a year warranty on certain things is understandable but on the entire integrity of the patio--like seat walls falling over and the entire patio starting to erode with the land is not a warranty issue--it's lawsuit material. It's dangerous. She felt terrible but it was clear she was simply repeating what she was told to say. They are completely not coming back to fix their work or even see what they have done. We have no other option but to sue them now. We have 3 landscaping companies and one construction company telling us the entire patio needs to come out for safety's sake. We have contacted two lawyers and will proceed with legal action I suppose. Sad to come to this...
Description of Work: treeline mulch bed clearing, weed fabric, mulch. patio design and installation inc. seat walls and stairs delivery of additional compost and mulch the following year UPDATED MAY 20, 2012: This is an update to a previous review submitted a few weeks ago. The work was done over a year ago.

Response from Marvin's Organic Gardens
These customers take the cake for the most difficult people we've ever worked with in over 20 years! This goes way beyond normal customer expectations. Even if they were not 2 years outside of there warranty, all of my landscapers promised that they would never set foot on this customers property again. Nightmare customer! 99.999% of the customers we deal with are wonderful and pleasant, and for that I am grateful. They even lied and said that this was current work (2012), this work was accomplished in 2009-2010. I forgive them and would like to move on in a positive direction with positive customers who do not slander their service providers. The info the posted is totally contrived and false, it is a shame that anyone would go to such lengths.

While I was slow to post this review, it is in no way a reflection on our satisfaction, just our busy days. As the yard has come into bloom this Spring, we couldn't be happier. We told Frank we wanted to enjoy the landscape, but not spend a lot of time on maintenance and he responded by giving us fragrance, color, and low-maintenance plantings. We're thrilled! We felt as though Frank cared as much as about our landscape as we did. After the plants were installed he returned the following day to walk me through their care and maintenance AND even offered a few tips for my neighbor. He was very generous with his time. His crew was careful, prompt, and courteous. Frank loves what he does and it shows. We'd use them again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: We contracted with Marvin's last Fall to install new landscaping for our home. We have small yard and Frank, Marvin's landscape designer, made the most of it. We asked Frank, acknowledging we had a budget, to tackle our small yard and two small beds surrounding our parking area. Our home is LEED-certified so we wanted to give as much thought and care to the landscape as went into the house. Frank offered us a wonderful solution to a corner of our yard, which had vexed us for some time, by creating an "edible corner" and surrounding it with a mulch patch. Due to all of his years of experience, Frank was able to quickly and appropriately make suggestions for our small space including blueberry bushes, a cherry tree, arborvitaes (for height to cover a fence), a sweet bay magnolia, wine bark (one of his favorites), hydrangeas, and an ornamental grass. Frank also suggested seeding a new lawn and I was skeptical, but this year for the first time in my life as a homeowner (over 6 years), I have beautiful green grass without the addition of any chemicals!

We found Marvin's Organic Gardens through use of an Angie?s List Big Deal coupon earlier on this year. The coupon was for them to create a detailed plan for potential landscaping services. Our first phase would be the front yard (and currently the only part of the plan we've received), which Frank @ Marvin?s generated a quote, which we accepted and agreed to start work. Frank's plan included plants native to the region, took into account our need for low maintenance and design aesthetic. Marvin's require a 50% upfront payment (higher than we would like, but they did accept credit cards) in order to schedule the work. It was scheduled approximately 1 month later and we were given a specific start date only by repeatedly calling the office. Prior to the job starting, most contact had to be initiated by us in order to keep things on schedule. I'm sure they were busy from the coupon and delays from rainy weather earlier in the season, but since they have staff in addition to their landscapers, I had hoped it would be easier to have 2-way communication about timing, etc. Frank communicated best by either emailing directly or creating an appointment. It would have been nice to have Frank on-site more and may have reduced delays that occurred. Due to delays at their end, Marvin's didn't start the project for a full 4 days after the promised start date (into November) - although we were not given notice of this. To their credit however, Marvin's did perform some work prior to the start date (pulling out the front hedges) which we were very happy with. Their willingness to proceed with some of this work greatly helped us out with other projects that we were carrying out around the house. They also removed additional hedges on the side of our house, in preparation for a future phase of landscaping, going above and beyond the quote. Rob and Bill, who performed the actual work, seemed to have a fairly religious 10:30am to 3:30pm schedule. Sometimes this worked out due to weather, other times it seemed to us that they were missing vital opportunity to grab the last few days of good weather left in the season. Both Rob and Bill were however extremely pleasant to get on with and, despite the short hours they worked, it is kind of hard to find fault in the finished product. Removal of the original concrete steps seemed to be the first challenge (which they performed without use of a jackhammer). This may have elongated the time it would have otherwise taken to complete this phase - however they worked hard at performing this step by hand and did a good job. Some days they were actually attempting to acquire materials, other days working extremely h****** removing the concrete steps and others, just a few hours of laying stones - overall, the job took 2 1/2 weeks, which we felt was long considering the small size of our yard and Frank's estimate at the beginning of the job. One aspect of the job was to rip out the old concrete pathway and replace with a stone one. We were both very impressed that they managed to do this and grade the path in such a way that where we were we used to have pooling on the path, this was no longer the case. They continued this grading effort into our front lawn after we voiced concern over the height of the flower bed in respect to the rest of the yard. Frank took this in stride and immediately offered up the grading (adding soil, new grass seed) of the yard. Currently, due to the oncoming winter season, it is hard to see how good the quality of the plant material will turn out to be come spring\summer next year. The grass seed was planted at the end of the job (mid-November), with very little of it germinating (Frank was overly optimistic with its timing). We remain hopeful that Frank chose plants wisely and confident that should any plant not be up to scratch that Frank would replace it next year. Marvin's is already expecting to come out early spring (once yearly maintenance) and will be insuring that the grass fills in. Despite the delays, we are very happy with the result and would consider hiring them again (and Frank is currently working on the back yard plan which we look forward to seeing). Even with delays and unexpected challenges, Frank followed his original price estimate and made us feel like we got more than our money's worth.
Description of Work: Part 1: Angie's List Big Deal coupon: a detailed plan for potential landscaping services (including hardscaping) for both front and back yard. Part 2: Executing the front yard plan: hardscaping included new front steps and short pathway to driveway and landscaping included the front planting bed (removal of existing hedges, full site clean-up included).

Contacted Marvins Organic Gardens (MOG) early in the Spring to estimate retaining walls in backyard. Frank, the Landscape Designer from MOG, came out and met with me and my wife to learn about our project. He had a fantastic vision for the space and saw great potential for it transitioning as our kids grew up (and out). He was extremely knowledgeable about native plants and sensitive to our desire to save a couple of unique trees in our backyard. Even on the first visit he was offering free advice and recommendations. The next day he was back with a crew shooting elevations and taking measurements to ensure he had an accurate layout. The result was a scale drawing/plan of the backyard with specific plantings called out and tiered walls that would blend in to the landscape and be safest for our kids playing in the backyard. They were the highest of the three bids but Frank truly had the best vision/ plan for the space and the strongest knowledge of flora. Due to the higher price, we only did the retaining walls in the Spring and postponed the plantings and rain garden. By late March a crew from MOG began work. It was the same two guys the entire time and they were extremely conscientious, courteous and professional. The spring was incredibly wet, which slowed down their work, but they did the best they could under the circumstances. They did a fantastic job with the retaining walls! Plus, they did some extra grading in the yard to improve drainage and make it more useable while they were at it. A couple times I tried to reach Frank to discuss the project, including when the walls were complete and I was interested in starting on the rain garden, but he was hard to get a hold of. It's understandable at that time of year for a landscaper, but I need to mention it none-the-less, to be fair. Overall, we were extremely pleased with the work that was done and felt that everyone from MOG went above and beyond expectations. Yes, it costed more than others had estimated, but it was worth every penny. We were so pleased with their work that this Fall when we decided it was time to do work in our front yard, Frank at MOG was our first and only call. Frank came out again and worked with us to understand our desires for the front landscaping. While he was visiting, he noticed bag worms on one of our trees and explained how we could take care of them ourselves (not looking to "sell" or push services on us.) That saved our tree! Once again he developed a full plan for the front that demostrated great vision and knowledge. While it was more than we had planned to spend in the front, Frank worked with us to include the remaining work in the backyard, too, so we felt we ended up with a very good arrangement. A couple weeks later, sooner than anticipated, the same crew from the Spring (Rob and Bill) showed up and began work. Both of these guys work really hard and are extremely friendly. Rob, who did the stonework both in front and in the backyard, is really skilled--both walls look fantastic and are SOLID (my kids love walking along them like balance beams and not a rock is out of place or unstable). As in the back, when working on the front, the crew did several extra things to improve the overall appeal and function of the landscaping. This included separating and re-planting some plants, taking out an extra bush, trimming several shrubs and filling in (and seeding!) some low-spots out in the yard. When it was all done, we were very pleased and got a lot of good comments from our neighbors!

They came out for the consultation back in May. They said they would send the design, but to this day they have not. At the time they asked me if we were going to do the work, or if we were going to pay them to do the work. We told them we would do the actual work, so I am not sure if this is a factor or not. We have tried to contact them about getting our design without any response. We also were suppose to get a coupon for $100 credit, but we have yet to receive this as well.

I responded to a Deal of the Day, which was for a landscape design at half off ($75 for $150 value) and $100 off of any work performed. I sent an email immediately and never got any response. Tried again. Nothing. It took several phone calls to finally speak with someone to set up an appointment. Although someone did come to discuss the plan with me, I was told I would have to be patient as others were ahead of me, but he sounded interested in doing the walk way in the summer. I was disappointed to be put off for a month to even see a design, but was willing to wait. I didn't hear back in any fashion. I emailed and got no reply. I sent another email and finally got a reply. Again, I was told others were ahead of me, but he would work on my design "by the end of the week" (dated Aug. 22). I have received no further emails, phone calls, plans, or even estimates as of today, Sept. 18.
Description of Work: A person came to our house to discuss ideas for a landscape design. We were also interested in an estimate for a walk way and water feature. But no design or estimates have been provided.

The final outcome was good although it took much longer than expected. I worked with Wes who I found to be very likeable, professional, and knowledgeable. He seemed very willing to suggest ideas that would save me money. I never got the feeling that he was trying to "upsell" me or add to the cost of the job. I don't really know how the price compared as I did not get another bid. I was so satisfied with the original meeting and design I didn't look elsewhere. Everyone I met and talked to was very nice and courteous from Wes, to the office personnel, to the workers on the job. This is a company of very nice people. Now for the negatives. As pleasant as they are, communication and keeping the customer informed is not their strong suit. There were times they pulled people off the job for several days at a time and never told me. I don't mind them moving their people around but I would just like to be told not to expect any work for a few days. Explaining something to a customer after the fact is not the same as keeping them informed. I had to take the initiative to keep in contact and I made many more calls to them than they did to me. Even though I got frustrated with the delays, and they were always courteous to me, I would have appreciated more effort on their part to keep me informed. I don't believe it's because they don't care because I think they do. I just think they over schedule their work force. Once my job got started there were no rain/weather issues but there were a lot of days when they were not here. Having said that the work they did was excellent. I believe they try their hardest to provide the best quality they can, and it's clear that quality is very important to them. I would use them again but they would have to convince me that the communication would be better. In summary Marvins is a company of hard working, honest people that just need to improve their communication efforts.
Description of Work: The job actually had 2 parts. Part 1 was to remove and old railroad tie wall and replace it with a Boulder Wall in back of the house. Part 2 was to landscape the front of the house, trim some old growth and remove some overgrowth.

I actually called MOG to inquire about getting some mulch and topsoil, and after speaking with them on the phone, decided to have them come out and assess our landscaping needs. Frank came out the next day (or soon after) and spent quite a bit of time with me, walking through our yard and discussing what could/should be done immediately, what would be neat for the future, and even pointed out some projects that we could do ourselves. He talked to me about the plants that we had growing in our yard that we didn't know, and about how to care for our current landscaping. It was THE MOST INFORMATIVE hour + that I've spent with any landscapers. The organic, reusable, and native factor was important to me and I wanted to be sure to incorporate as much as possible into my yard, and Frank was very well-versed in this area and gave me some great suggestions. He drew up a plan for us that same day and left us with the estimate. I was very happy with the plans and the fact that he was able to reuse and relocate some of our existing plans to save money and keep them in our yard. We decided to think it over for a day or two, since we had originally only wanted mulch and topsoil, LOL! But we knew our yard was in dire need of some help, and Frank's plan was priced VERY well, so we decided to go for it. We did change a few plants on the plan, and went up to the Garden Center to look at some of the plants that were were unfamiliar with, and decided to leave our deposit so we could get on the schedule. They did tell us that it would be 3-6 weeks before they came out to start the work, and we were ok with that. I was disappointed that we didn't get a call back confirming that they had received our revised plans and deposit, and that I had to call and email to get that confirmation. We also ended up waiting 11 weeks for the project to start, and in between there was very little communication and promised start dates came and went without any phone calls. HOWEVER, once I was able to contact Frank via the Contact Us email on the website and tell him how disappointed we were in the lack of communication, he assured us that we would be starting soon and that it would be well worth the wait. Communication improved dramatically after that and our work started shortly thereafter. THE WAIT WAS WELL, WELL, WELL WORTH IT! Our yard is BEAUTIFUL now! Frank and his crew were friendly and courteous, worked quickly and cleanly, and they more than made up for the wait time with some additional work that we had mentioned in the original consultation. We got our money's worth and then some for sure! We plan to use them again soon (maybe even this fall) to get some fruiting plants in the yard so we can have organic fruits next summer - which was one of Frank's suggestions. In addition, my grandmother who lives next door came out to watch the crew work and now she also wants to have MOG do some landscaping on her yard. We expect that there may be a long wait, but it was definitely worth it, in terms of quality and price. My only suggestion to MOG is to improve your communications with your customers. I've seen quite a few comments lately with the same issues and I worry that it will ruin the reputation of this fantastic company. They do great work, and they are environmentally conscious - we can't afford to lose an asset like that in our community. So, please consider it constructive criticism.... keep in touch with your clients and let them know the status of their work, even if you have to tell them that it will be another 4 months. Yes you might lose some people who need their work done sooner than that, but no one will ever criticize you for being honest and proactive - it may sound harsh, but the reality is that you're at risk of losing potential clients when you have poor reviews on Angie's List anyway. I for one would have been perfectly fine with a few phone calls that just said "we're running behind and it will be at least 3 more weeks, maybe longer." If we had just had that kind of contact, I would have given A's on responsiveness and professionalism. But again, THIS IS A GREAT COMPANY and WORTH THE WAIT! If you are considering hiring them, don't hesitate at all.... just be sure to ask for a realistic time line and know that you might be the one initiating communication with them. But the work is first class and you won't be disappointed in the final results.
Description of Work: - Garden/Landscape design and walk-through of our yard with discussions of future landscaping ideas - removed a meduim-sized tree, ground out several old stumps - relocated 5 large plants (holly and lilac bushes) - added soil to existing garden beds, installed new plants, moved large rocks/boulders, added edging, finished with mulch - cleaned out other areas of existing landscaping and added compost - extended drainage pipe at bottom of the yard - pruned existing landscaping

After we called the company and left msg about setting up an appointment, it took several days to hear back. Understandable since they were swamped by people taking advantage of the deal. The appt. was set, but later we were asked to change to another date due to other projects taking extra time. (Again, we were okay with that.) Frank showed up promptly for the new appt. We were given the option to stay with him for approx. 1 -2 hr. while he created the plan or just have him email it to us in approx. 1 week. We chose the email option. After about 3 weeks we still had not received the plan. Called and were told it had just been mailed out to us (not what we requested). As it turned out, it was mailed to our rental so it took another week before we actually got the plan. The estimate was reasonable. However, the design was not. I checked out each suggested plant on the Web and could not believe some of the suggestions (e.g., planting what would grow into a very tall tree next to the house). In addition, one area we specifically asked to be completely redone was not given a new design. It was simply indicated to have the bushes trimmed. Basically, I'm sure we could have created a much better design ourselves and saved the $.
Description of Work: Bought Angie's special deal to have landscape design created. Met with Frank at our rental property to discuss what we would like covered by the design. Received design and bid for the work.

In February, we decided to go with Marvin's based on the positive reviews on Angie's list, as well as the very competitive deals they were running. Wes came out right away and provided a fantastic overview of the paver patio, paver walkway, fish pond and back yard landscaping we were looking for. The quote he gave us was far less than what Natorp had quoted 2 years earlier, so we were quick to sign.We started the work in March but a majority of the work was not completed until end of April (due to rains and the extent of the work we had done). The quality of work was amazing. Two men did all of the work--they custom built stairs with lighting built in and individually cut each paver (due to the complex pattern we chose for our patio). They were always on time and very professional. No matter how busy, they were happy to stop and answer any questions we had.Once the paver work was completed, the two men designed a beautiful pond with flat stones around the perimeter. Wes made sure we put 2 larger stones around the edge so my girls would have a place to sit and watch our fish & flowers. The patio is beautiful. The landscaping is top quality. We had minor issues with electrical work, but they were promptly addressed each time we contacted Wes.The only improvement area I would mention is Marvin's availability when there are questions. We commuincated with Wes via email and responses sometimes took a few days. My husband and I can by impatient at times, so this was frustrating from time to time, but was OK in the end. I suggest that Marvin's puts more staffing in place to take customer calls and handle questions.
Description of Work: Removal of existing backyard patio & landscaping, installation of paver patio and walkway, installation of fish pond, trees and shrubs, flower beds throughout back yard.

In May, we had Wes come to give us an estimate to clean up the beds in our backyard. He had some wonderful suggestions and ideas of what to do with several of the beds. He was even able to write up an estimate for me that night. When I called him two weeks later to say that we would like to move forward with the work, he explained that it might take up to six weeks before they would be able to come out to our house due to all of the spring rain. I never heard back from him. I called, two months later, and found that there was no record of any contact with me. The person on the phone had told me that she would have Wes call me that night or the next day, but I have yet to hear from them. I am frustrated because I was understanding of issues with the weather, but now it is the end of July, and the work I had hope to get done in May is still not done. I gave them a chance to still do the work, but they did not ever get back to me.Part of me wonders if we did not get better service because this was not a huge job. This was a huge dissappointment after seeing they were so highly rated here on Angie's list.

Response from Marvin's Organic Gardens
I spoke with the member and mentioned that we are simply backed up with an incredible volume of work. She understood, but mentioned that she wished I would have gotten back with her sooner, which is understanable. I explained to her that size of job is not contigent on speed of service, that we treat every customer with equal respect and service. As can be seen with many comments from potential customers thisa year, our challenge is in our response time. This is feedback we appreciate, and look forward to improving on.

The initial walk through and estimate were given in done in early spring of 2011. Wes walked all over the yard with us. It was a productive conversation. There were wants and needs. The projects included serious needs (drainage & water flow issues that were rendering some areas unusable and portions of gardens compromised. The other part was a long wished for want. Wes was able to address and make suggestions for both. I did not want a landscaping company to just charge in to fix everything without consideration to the effect their work and vehicles would have on our yard and my various garden areas. The extraordinary amount and frequency of rain we got this year played total havoc with the planned starting time. There were several false starts. If this work had been started on the oversaturated lawn it would have been a total mess. They made sure not to begin until the rains let up and the yard and gardens had time to dry a bit before bringing machines onto it. Patience was important during this time. In the end I got exactly what I wanted even if the project meandered a bit. The final work day was a whirlwind of activity and Marvin's Organic Garden's staff. The work was completed to our satisfaction and thoroughly cleaned up. I got great advice from Wes after describing my long term and short term goals and visions for the worked on areas and my other garden areas. The areas worked on were done in a manner that will fix the problems long term not just a band aid fix. That is what I expected from a company with Organic Gardens in the name. Organic gardening and holistic healing sometimes take a bit more effort and patience to get results. The bottom line is that my home has been enhanced in exactly the manner I wanted. The crew members were always respectful of our property and surrounding areas.I am thrilled with the end result! I plan to use this company again. Wes and his respectful, hardworking crew will probably be repeat guests in my yard and gardens for years to come even though these guests I will have to pay. I really appreciate the enthusiasm and care that Wes gave these improvements.
Description of Work: We had drainage issues and standing water problems that were resolved and a flagstone patio with stepping stone pathway installed. Drainage solutions involved large portions of both side yards. These issues were addressed by flow wells, raising soil levels, redirecting water to flow in it's original direction. Several large portions of the lawn were built up with topsoil/compost (it may look brown but this stuff is pure gold). A blue flagstone patio approx. 144 sq. foot plus a stepping stone path from pool to stone patio/firepit area. The stone patio was to fit in with my overall plan of a peaceful natural setting to begin incorporating some natural gardens of ferns, trillium, sweet woodruff, hostas etc. This area is to be a peaceful natural area for relaxing or enjoying a cozy fire and marshmallows in our movable fire pit.. We wanted the patio to be the destination away from the house and pool area. We will adding shrubs etc. for privacy.

Pretty lousy. In spite of phone calls (voicemails) and emails, after the initial contact on June 17 I could not get any response from anyone there. We were pressed for time to get things done, and it was exasperating to wait and wonder if this would ever get done. As a side note, I had the same problem (lack of response) when I tried to get my mulch and fertilizer ordered. Voicemail- no response. Email- no response. I had to DRIVE INTO MARVIN'S PERSONALLY IN ORDER TO GET IT ORDERED. In any case, we had a competitor of Marvin's come out and the job has been done (the competitor's estimate done on 7-7 and the job completed on 7-13)
Description of Work: None except for the estimate. They came out in a fairly good response time to look things over and give me an estimate to correct the water erosion issue underneath ouor patio. He was very personable and I had confidence that they would take care of the problem.

It was one of the big deals and it was a humongous disappointment. The guy was super nice and he was great coming out. He did the landscape design and I really liked his plan but to get them out here to do the work, I couldn't do it. I wouldn't get callbacks from the company for days just to get a time when they thought they could be out here. They wouldn't respond or would say they would call the next day and then they wouldn't call. It was a nightmare. He did give me the paperwork that had his chicken scratches on it. That's basically what I paid for, so I had to end up hiring another landscaper to do the work. I wasn't as pleased with the person that I hired and I think, in the long run, I would have been more pleased with his product. They left piles of mulch and compost in the driveway for weeks so I couldn't even get in and out of my driveway. I was just waiting around for them to come. I was pleased with the design and he was a super nice guy. They did finally call me and said they had some personal problems, but it was weeks after. When they finally called to schedule it had been over a month since they were originally supposed to be out that week. I went ahead and got somebody else because I couldn't wait 12 weeks. I was bummed about it. It was going to be a $5,000 project. His price was right on target with what I paid the other people. When he did come, he was here at the time he said he would be.

Response from Marvin's Organic Gardens
The rainy season backed all projects up by over 10 weeks this year. We communicated this with Member, and it is understanable that she needed to get the work done sooner. We appreciate the opportunity to serve, and are always looking for ways to improve the speed of our service. We are more focused on quality rather than quantity, and always perform high quality work for our patrons, and never rush just to get the job done. We may not be the fastest company, but we are one of the best once given the chance to perform.

I liked the design. The job was delayed due to all the rain we had this past Spring. Wes and the crew were easy to work with and accommodating. I requested a few other things as the job proceeded; and these were "thrown in" without any additional cost - mulching around a big oak tree, putting gravel over a drain pipe to prevent muddy drainage, and building up a window well. I am happy with the work that was done - and would re-hire them in the future. It was difficult to get a time frame about when the work would be done; and I just happened to be off work the day they decided they would start the job. Several times I left a message for Wes to call me; and did not receive a return call. I guess I won't know how completely happy I am until next Spring and Summer. For now, though, I would say I am pleased overall.
Description of Work: I asked for a landscape design and an estimate for our front yard, back yard, one side of the house, and along the driveway. I requested something with a lot of color that was easy to care for. Wes came out; and drew up a design that I liked.

Marvin was very professional and up front as to the cost of having his crew complete the work or just delivering the materials and having me complete the work myself. The estimate for materials was $425.00 and seemed like a decent deal to me. I called and left two messages for someone from Marvin's to contact me to arrange for delivery of the materials but never received a call back. Looking on Angie's List at other reviews of Marvin's I'm wondering if better service is provided to customers with bigger jobs paying more money.

We gave Marvin's a $1000 deposit (more than 1/2 the total cost of the work we contracted them to do) when the design plan was delivered. We were told they'd probably be able to get to our job around the third week of May (could be delayed b/c of all the rain). Third week of May came and went, contacted Marvin's to see when we should expect the work to be done, was told that we were on the schedule for the week ending June 4. Week came and went with no work or contact from Marvin's. Contacted them on Saturday 6/4 and was told that they should have a crew free on Tuesday 6/7 and that they'd contact me the day before or the day of. Tuesday 6/7/11 came and went AGAIN with no contact. Sent two e-mails and left a voice mail for both the designer and the scheduling coordinator. Here we are 7 weeks later and STILL waiting to have the work done while they have had our deposit (check cashed 4/25/11) for 6 weeks. Called main office AGAIN 5:30 6/8/11 and told them that if our job is not completed this week, we will be cancelling our order/obtaining a refund and looking for a different contractor. Landscape designer called a 8:15pm 6/8/11 to explain that the jobs seem to be taking longer than they expected and that they 'should' be able to complete our job this week. Explained to him that they have had our $1000 for 6 weeks now and if the job is not completed by end of business Friday that we will be cancelling our order and expecting a refund. He assured me that our job will be completed this week. Time will tell. UPDATE: work completed 6/10/11 to our satisfaction. Their work looks great and the plants appear to be very healthy. Our only hesitation in using them for future landscaping work would be due to issues with scheduling. Their design and execution (once we finally landed on the schedule) was very very good.
Description of Work: We purchased an Angie's Big Deal from Marvin's for a landscape design for our front yard. They were very busy as the AL promotion worked well for them. Scheduling was a bit erroneous, but Frank came out well after hours (after 6pm) 4/18/11 to meet with us. We liked Frank right off the bat, he was very personable and absolutely hit the nail on the head when it came to the design he came up with. We were very excited looking at the incredible plan he came up with. He took the time to thoroughly answer all of our questions (was at the house for 2 hours!).

Frank's design was exactly what we were looking for. Their price was the better of the two quotes. The installers were hard workers, friendly, professional and provided us with the information we needed to care for the trees. Amy in the office was nice to work with.

Wes himself came to our house and was very nice and friendly. The problem was with the quality of the "design" (if one could call it that) and the responsiveness. Wes emailed us with a couple of plant suggestions and that was it. Mind you, we have a huge yard and expected a landscaping design to come with specifics such as: where do these plants go? What's the overall vision? Not an email with plant names and that's it. To make matters worse, one of the few plants suggested was poisonous (as a Google search revealed) to both children and pets (which we have)! Disappointed by their quality of work and lack of attention, we contacted Natorps who came over, delivered a landscaping blueprint that clearly showed where the plants would go and how it would look like and THEY DID IT FOR FREE! We repeatedly tried to contact Wes to share our discontent and ask for a refund or a store credit to no avail. I am very disappointed and do not recommend this service to anyone else.
