These guys are so professional and courteous! They did a fantastic job and went above and beyond our expectations. They took our list of what needed be done, made some excellent suggestions, gave us the best price out of 5 bids and gave us more than any other contractor proposed. They did a few small things for us at no charge and they were truly a pleasure to deal with. We can't recommend them highly enough. We plan top have them back to do even more work in our front yard and plant some trees and other landscaping this Spring.
Description of Work: Replaced timber landscaping/retaining wall with 50 foot stone wall, installed a second stone landscaping wall, installed 20 stone steps, planted 3 large evergreen trees, regraded yard, installed new fence, added gravel under deck, installed stepping stones in side yard

It went very well. It took quite a while, (months) for him to finish other jobs to get to us. Once here, he had a very solid, friendly and professional doing the work. It took two days - they worked solidly. Very pleased with the finished product and the way the crew worked. I would definitely recommend them to others - and I already have.
Description of Work: He evaluated out back yard, which we wanted restructured for minimal care. He gave several options. We chose for him to totally clean up and weed back yard, set up some planting areas, place webbing over area and fill in with gravel.

They did a great job. From initial assessment to completion of the work they were knowledgeable, hardworking and cheerful. They were not able to use the vertical seed slicer on the hillside, so they had to improvise with another tool. Looking forward to spring!
Description of Work: On hillside, weed whip all grass, perennials and weeds to ground level. Collect all extraneous debris from bed area including cut weeds, grasses and perennials. Homeowner to remove plastic barrier in specified area. Once hillside has been cut short, mix designated prairie seed with sand in 5 gallon buckets. Thoroughly and copiously spread seed/sand across the entire hillside from backyard to front yard. Once seed has been spread, use two vertical seed slicers to inject all newly sewn seed into hillside. The goal is to go both vertically and horizontally across hillside to cover every square inch of hillside to inject as much seed as possible into soil. This process helps seed make contact with soil for faster germination. Process also helps to prevent new seed from washing/eroding in heavy rains, and also keeps seed out of bird beak reach. Once vertical seeds slicing has been completed, spread light application of organic fertilizer (3-3-3) to help enrich newly germinated Prairie seed. Project includes following spring and summer visit to assess site, to be set up by homeowner by calling office.

Wes's crew was fantastic - friendly, hard working, and professional. They excavated the old driveway and the 2 feet of sand and clay underneath. They spent days creating a proper foundation of compacted gravel and topped it with a beautiful paver driveway that looks like it could have been there when the house was built. Adjacent to the driveway was a nasty, weed-covered slope that ran onto the old concrete. Wes designed a really sharp natural rock wall to hold that back. He found rocks that exactly match our neighbor's old rock wall. Everything was done exactly the way Wes had described it, and it looks fantastic. In the yard, Wes and his guys removed a lot of old topsoil that was basically a weed farm. All of the grass is now gone. They replaced the old soil with rich, composted soil that Wes creates himself at their farm. They replaced the grass and weeds with an eclectic mix of really eye-catching perennials, and built walkways with old bricks, gravel, and some beautiful stepping stones. At Wes's suggestion, it is finished it off with pine straw mulch which prevents weeds from coming back. When a few of the perennials failed to thrive, Wes came back and replaced them at no additional cost. We wound up choosing pavers for the driveway that were much more expensive than the ones the bid had been based on, so Wes worked with us and adjusted the bid mid-project to help us stay as close to budget as possible. The whole experience, from the first phone call to the final walk-through was delightful. Three weeks after the project was completed we were awarded the 2015 beautification award from the Friends of Covington. Do yourself a favor and give these guys a call!
Description of Work: We have a beautiful 1872 historic house that was badly in need of a new look to bring the landscape up to par. In addition, the driveway had been poorly constructed 30+ years ago and looked like someone had been driving a tank across it. We wanted to replace the crumbled pad with something more interesting than poured concrete. In the yard, we were looking for a low/no maintenance landscape - no grass, no weeds. We had unsuccessfully tried to achieve that on our own for years. Wes came to our house multiple times to get an understanding of what we were looking for. He's very passionate! I estimate he spent a total of 8-10 hours with us, talking out the project and giving us very interesting options. It was great.

This was the second time I used Marvin's. I scheduled a visit with Wes to discuss the landscaping work. In addition to trimming, mulching and fertilizing, we wanted to extend our back patio with pavers to increase our usable space. Wes explained the work that they would do and provided a quote and answered any questions that I had about the work. His team came in and spent two days at my house completing the work. They did everything with quality. The pavers were installed carefully and professionally and all of the work looks great! They made sure to communicate with me throughout the process and we walked and inspected the job at completion to make sure that everything was taken care of. I am very impressed with the work of Marvin's Organic Gardens and would happily recommended them to anyone!

Wes came by and gave me a bid for the landscaping work I wanted done. He was prompt, professional, and gave me tips on things I could do in some problem areas which wouldn't require much work, but also wouldn't require paying someone to do, which I appreciated. His quote for the work was more than fair. The team was more than willing to get the work done during the Fall, but due to a timing issue totally on my end, I plan on having them do the work in the Spring instead.
Description of Work: Wes came by and provided a quote for the work I wanted done. As it took less than an hour, he didn't charge me anything for the consultation.

They started without the final approval walk-through, changed design/materials without consulting me, became belligerent and threatening when I asked for changes. They were also supposed to build out a stone deck around the pool, but after getting threatening phone calls and emails I canceled and found someone else to complete the effort. The reason I don't give them an F is because part of the fault is mine for not spending enough time understanding and questioning the initial design/estimate and instead trusting Wes to correctly interpret everything we had talked about during the initial meeting...a hard lesson learned.

I really wish Angies List would stop forcing me to fill in everything. I don't really want to leave a review, but I'm tired of being bugged about it. You can't even use the N/A for the ratings because the site argues with you that your rating Overall is better than N/A.
Description of Work: We requested an estimate and decided not to have the work done. Angies List though won't stop bugging me for to leave a review and there is no way to opt out. It says to either write one or remind later. So here is your review Angies. I have nothing against this provider. Just don't have much to say other than he came out, showed us what he would do, and then we decided to wait because we couldn't commit to anything.

We were very impressed with the owner and are going to do the work he suggested. Some will be done this year and some next year due to the time of the year this took place. Contractor was late for appointment due to being at another job. Discussed what I was looking for with Wes, as my yard/flower beds were pretty "bare bones" at the time. Then left him alone to "do his thing." Maybe an hour and a half later, I received Wes' "work". I would best describe it as a very expensive estimate for his company to do some landscaping work around my property. With the exception of one small flowerbed next to my rear patio, his "landscaping design" consisted of planting seven trees/bushes in various places, and placing a fire pit area in my back yard...all somewhat expensive projects. He recommended placing some of the trees in an area where I had told him I planned on putting a vegetable garden. Wes' estimate for Marvin's Organic Gardens to do the work came to about $7000. My wife was highly upset that there was no design created for the flowerbeds in the front of the house, nor was there any design for the one side of the house that is visible from the street and receives a lot of sun. On the one hand, I liked Wes' enthusiasm and his obvious knowledge of the plants he suggested using (I had asked for low maintenance). However, I also thought I made it clear that I was a "low budget" kind of guy. I certainly had no intentions of hiring anyone to do $7000 worth of landscaping work. I wanted the "design" work that would supposedly take three hours of a professional's time and would be worth $300, which I could then implement myself. Nowhere near three hours of time was spent creating a "design" (and some of the time that was spent was used to create the estimate to have his company do the work), nor was the "design" I received worth anywhere near $300 in my estimation. I actually question whether it was worth the discounted $69 price. In summary, I feel this was less an offer to provide a discounted landscaping design than it was to have a landscaper come out and charge you for an estimate of landscaping work they would/could do. I suppose if you have LOTS of money to spend on landscaping, Marvin Organic Gardens would do a good job. I wouldn't recommend this special if you are looking for a trained landscape designer to provide you a detailed, comprehensive landscape design/vision for your property.
Description of Work: I accepted an Angie's List offer for some discounted landscaping design work. This was advertised to be a three hour service worth nearly $300.

Work was done well and with much care and enthusiasm, All of the hardscapes were very carefully graded. A surveyor's transit was used regularly as the many (thick) layers of gravel and brick were added. The result is a job where rain water rolls off just as expected with no pooling or ponding. And the creativity in selecting stones, plants, and taking care of details was exemplary and extremely professional. The project was moderately large with significant brick paving, grading, breaking up and hauling away old concrete, and delivering multiple (seeming endless) truckloads of gravel, soil, mulch, and other supplies. Other landscapers "no bid" the job because it was too large. Marvin's Organic Gardens made it seem routine. Impressive.

The company was prompt, professional and a joy to work with! The design turned out perfectly, including re-configuring multiple beds, planting all plants and trees, sodding of re-configured beds and finish work. The plantings were in great shape and held up nicely through the summer. Placement was spot on to the design and we are completely satisfied with the finished product. Mulching and other finish work was done well and they even covered some areas that were not quoted at no additional charge. I would highly recommend them to anyone in the area. We will definitely be using them again in the spring to manage our back yard scapes!!!
Description of Work: We had MOG (among others) come out and design a complete rip and replace of our front and side landscaping. Our experience was top notch from beginning to end. Wes Duren was the designer and he was the only one who showed passion about what we wanted to do and offered a number of great ideas to help us through the decision making process. Our scapes were many and he nailed the design at no incremental cost. We had a hand written design as well as a digital copy in our inbox before he left our initial consultation appointment! As a result of the experience, we chose to have MOG perform the work.

The front and side bushes look great after the trimming and the trimming was done the way I requested. However they left a lot of the debris on the ground, the back bushes were not trimmed much with remaining debris. The edging that was completed looks nice and even, however they didn't complete the front or side of house before starting the edging in the back of the house. So now the beddings look incomplete. They started power washing the drive way but not able to complete the job due to time. I did have the power washing as a job to get started if the other items were complete. This was also mentioned verbally. The three men that came to do the work were friendly, professional, knowledgable and hard working. I gave them a list of landscaping needs based on priority; it was a long list and far more than what time allotted. It would have been nice if they completed the list according to priority, cleaned up the trimming debris, finished the edging in the front of the house before starting in the backyard.

This was a customer that purchased an 8 hour package on Angies List. They needed at least twice the work accomplished as we were able to complete in an 8 hour allotted period. They would not allow us to work beyond the 8 hours, which is why certain aspects were left incomplete. The customer received an amazing value for the services for the time they allowed us to work in their yard.

Everything went well! Everyone was a pleasure to work with. We loved Wes' enthusiasm and passion for what he does. We enjoyed the dump truck driver and the 3 brothers that delivered the topsoil. Mark was knowledgeable about planting and fertilizing and took the time to answer a question I had about the grass seed. The people in the office were always helpful and would get back to me if they didn't have the answer.
Description of Work: There were 3 different phases to our project. They first delivered compost, wood chips, grass seed, fertilizer and pellets. Wes convinced us to use our son and his friends to weed whack the weeds, plant and fertilize the plants, and spread the 20 cubic yards of wood chips and plant the grass seed. Phase 2 was delivering top soil to our side yard to even out a space that was too steep after a tree was removed. Phase 3 was Wes and Mark fertilizing our trees and bushes in the front yard and planting 12 new plants.
