I am an old house enthusiast who has been restoring houses as a hobby for some 20 years. I am always wary of using contractors, because you often don't get what you anticipated. George Wischt certainly proved me wrong this time. He was recommended to me by the kind folks at Stan Hywet. As it turns out, George did the brick restoration work at Stan Hywet a few years ago. It was a huge project and one that was completed expertly. They removed ALL the chimneys down to the roof and rebuilt them. My problem was much larger than I could tackle by myself. The back wall of my garage (brick with a slate roof) was collapsing and slipping off it's foundation. This occurred after years of backed up water that froze/thawed many times. Water ran across the garage floor like a river each time it rained. Needless to say, I was nervous about hiring a company to tear out a wall and rebuild it in a historically sensitive manner. I requested that they removed the brick, clean it and reuse it. I also requested that they match not only the color of the mortar, but the texture as well. The mortar on my house is a deep red and has little bits of gravel in it, giving it a nice texture. They arrived early Monday AM as scheduled and by the time they left had dropped off supplies, braced the garage, removed the original window (that was to be reinstalled) and torn out the wall. I was amazed when I got home from work and found a gaping hole in the garage. Most contractors do very little actual work the first day. They built the wall better than I ever expected. They filled the concrete block with rebar and mortar. They matched the mortar perfectly (color and texture). They also waterproofed the outside part that was buried. They also cleaned up nicely. I highly recommend them.
