The men that came out to do the work were very friendly and helpful. They had ideas on the best way to do the work for the best price. They did not try to up sell extras to us. We actually we're quoted a price and since the job ended up going smoother than expected, they lowered the price. The brickwork was done well and even though the fireplace is 35+ years old they matched the brick perfectly. Excellent job. Will use for any other masonry projects in the future.
Description of Work: We needed some work done on our fireplace. We had a air vent installed to draw air in from outside, we had a damper put on the chimney, and some brickwork patched.

I called them and they came out and gave me an estimate. They were not the cheapest or the most expensive but in the middle range. I went with this company because they seemed to know more about replaciing chimneys than the other companies I contacted. They matched the brick very well on the back chimney but the chimney at the side of the house does not match as well. However, while all the bricks on the house and the chimneys are the same, I think the sun over time changed the shade of the bricks at the side chimney and that is why it must not match as well. I should have had them match the chimney at the side of the house first and use all those types of bricks for both chimneys instead of the other way around as the side chimney can be seen from the street and is more noticable than the back chimney. Live and learn. However, they did an excellent job and were very attentive and professional.

Excellent work. Extremely professional and diligent. They dug out dozens of gigantic tree roots that were undermining our FLA room and cracked the cement floor and blocks. Poured new floor and helped to settle the bowing in the wall and window. We are very pleased.

I called about a dozen companies trying to get this job done - was only able to get 4 to come out for quotes. What is it with contractors these days just never returning calls? Anyway, Koontz was about the same price as the other 3, but they were going to replace a lot more bricks and be a lot more thorough with the job than the others were, so that's why they got my business. I originally contacted them in August 2014 and had been hoping to get job done at that time, but they were unable to squeeze me in before winter. To prevent further ice damage in the winter, they came out and secured a tarp to the damaged shoulder of the chimney. A lot of places wouldn't have gone that far. They were finally able to get me in the first week of June 2015. Again, a little later than I had hoped, but I believe if a contractor is busy, that's a good sign. It took them about 3 days, and I'm very pleased with the end result. The bricks don't match 100%, but I know it's unreasonable to expect a 100% match with 50 year old bricks. I would definitely recommend.
Description of Work: Replaced failing bricks and mortar at shoulder of chimney and at a few other various points in the chimney, about 200 bricks total. Also add a stone cap to the shoulder to prevent future water/ice damage.

Quick response to my call, Dale and Gary were friendly, hard working, very proffesional, explained what needed to be done, answered all my questions. As they were finishing the job Dale noticed a piece of flashing starting to lift and secured it and recaulked it.Would have been a roof leak sometime in the future. that was not in the contract, but I was not charged any extra. I feel they did an outstanding job at a fair price, and I highly recomend this company. Thanks guys for all your hard work.

Dale and Steve were fantastic to work with. I would say they set the gold standard for all contractors. At first contact, they called me after hours when they knew I would be home. They stopped by after hours to meet with me and present their ideas. They told me exactly when they woudl start the project and actually even started early. They gave me frequent updates and always asked if they needed my opinion even on the smallest of things. The best part was when my wife decided she would like a small change after project was complete, they agreed to the change really with no conflict. These are the people you want to work on your home. They produce extremely high quality work, are extremely professional, and are excellent communicators. We will definately have them back for our next project.

Steve and his workers did a great job. He was booked up and we weren't in a hurry, so he didn't get to our job immediately, but kept us informed of approximate start date (pending weather) and then let us know when he would actually start accurately. He arrived on time and got the job done promptly. He is very knowledgeable about his work, especially advised us about how the floor and the walls should be separated to allow for natural movement. His workers were all pleasant and good at what they do as well. We would definitely use him again!

Story started in August with a leak around chimney. Had new roof installed 3 yrs ago. Roofer came and did some flashing work and said problem was fixed. had more leaks about week later. Roofer said it is chimney. Chimney is 40 years old. had several people come out and would rebuild entire chimney some did not like sandstone. Finally called Koontz and Dale King came out and crawled around in attic and said" you got a roof problem, Chimney could use a new crown and minor work, but leak is from roof. He offered to do a water test for 200 dollars and waive that if he did chimney work. Called roofer back and told them to do water test for nothing; .Roofer did water test and found leak. Bottom line it was a flashing issue . After a month no leaks. Koontz was busy and felt we could go thru the winter and they could do chimney in spring. My wife wanted it done before winter so they got a nice day in November to do the work. Showed up at 7:30 and left about 4. all is good Wanted to wait a few weeks before the first fire, but will have one this week

Absolutely Fantastic. Steve is a very perceptive individual. He evaluated my problem and provided a great solution. A tree had broken the cement at one end of the sidewalk and the other end had sunk a good 8 inches. He removed all old concrete, cut the root, and provided a safe level sidewalk. He even ran my irrigation line under the sidewalk and created a pitch to drain the water away from the home. First Class work!!

Originally the plan was to reuse my existing sandstone and much of the old supporting brick structure, which was quoted at $1525. But upon opening up the stoop we found that the internal support block had deteriorated to the point that it had to be redone, and a necessary internal support had never been installed. So with the additional work and my decision to replace all the sandstone, job was requoted at $2,465, which I felt was reasonable. Quoted in late June and predicted available to do the work in late July/early August. Timing was as promised and job went as expected. I have one small misgiving about the job that if given the chance, would probably do differently. Final construction left the top step leading from the house down to the landing at the original height, 8-1/2". Meanwhile, we attempted to make the spacing on the other three "step-ups" approximately equal, and they ended up close enough at 6", 6-3/4", and 6-3/4". We've gotten used to the new spacing but if I had it to do over again, knowing we would end up replacing all the brickwork, I would've had the top landing raised to a higher elevation and made all the risers the same height as the step up into the house. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20...but I sort of think now that Koontz should've pointed that option out to me. That being said, all the work done was first quality and I wouldn't hesitate to hire Koontz again.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced 2 steps, stoop (landing) and associated support brickwork. Added support at middle of stoop that was missing from original installation, and as a (free) bonus moved and placed the old sandstone landing (about 4' x 5', weighing ~600#) in a new location I had chosen.

Every step was well planned. He told me of any changes or problems that came up on the way. THe steps to my porch needed replacing, as they were part of the foundation. His work looks very good and there is no sloppiness anywhere. He let me know if there was going to be a delay due to availability or delivery of specific items and cleaned up after every job.
Description of Work: Steve has done a number of jobs for me over the years. The most recent was a combination job. I had asked him to replace the wooden planks on my porch with composite lumber. He found that the foundation was cracked and the job turned out to be bigger than originally planned. In addition, the roofing company I had hired informed me that the chimneys needed tuckpointing. Steve did that job for me as well. Every job that he does he does very well. Patricia Klaas for Jennifer Haut
