In 2017 Roth Construction put a new roof on my 90 year old mother’s screened in porch. The roof has little pitch and had been leaking. They put on a tin roof and took over $4,000 for the job. One year later it was leaking and a moldy peeling mess. They came out and caulked it and painted over the mold. Year two mold and peeling was even worse. They won’t fix it because now they are blaming the issue on the pitch and two rafter boards that they say have dropped...but they are solid and were like that when they came out initially. In their own words a metal roof isn’t designed to have standing water...so why the heck didn’t they put a rubber roof on this porch? My mom trusted them to take care of her problem and they failed. She can’t afford to have a two year old roof peeled off and spend another $4000 for a rubber roof. This is a Hilliard business on Parkway Drive.

Response from Roth Construction Company
In early May 2017, Roth Construction Columbus was contracted by [Member Name Removed] to replace 64 SF of 3/4 inch roof sheathing, replace the existing metal roof and paint the ceiling on the porch. The existing metal roof had been leaking into the back porch area damaging some of the existing 3/4 inch roof sheathing and water staining on the ceiling. The previous metal roof was installed with exposed fasteners that leaked over time as the rubber seal deteriorates. This porch roof has a very flat pitch that would not meet the existing building code and Roth Construction Columbus recommended installing a standing seam roof versus the same metal roof with exposed fasteners (a standing seam roof has no fasteners exposed to the weather). Due to the age of the previous metal roof and the condition of the exposed fasteners, it seemed reasonable to believe installing a new standing seam metal roof would resolve the leaking porch roof issue [Member Name Removed] was experiencing. The standing seam roof was installed and the job was completed on June 5, 2017. May 2018 The roof was reported to be leaking and was reinspected by Roth Construction Columbus and Summit Building & Roofing, who installed the new standing seam roof. The seams on the new metal roof were caulked as a precaution due to the roof being such a flat pitch. Summit also caulked another area adjacent to the new metal roof related to homeowner maintenance. The area had been caulked in the past but had cracked and was leaking into the corner of the porch area causing staining on the ceiling. As a courtesy, the ceilings were repainted to repair the stained areas by Roth Construction Columbus. May 21, 2019 Roth Construction Columbus received a call that the porch roof was leaking again. The roof was inspected by Jon Kletrovetz, the General Manager at Roth Construction Columbus. During the inspection it was discovered, with the aid of a level, there are 2 existing rafters in the center of the porch framing that are bowed/sagging and causing a 1 inch pool of water to form on the new metal roof. The existing porch rafters are sagging because of the age of the porch roof framing and they are undersized when compared to today's building code. The new standing seam roof is not designed to have 1 inch of standing water on it and the sagging rafters are causing the porch roof to leak. Metal roofs are not designed to keep out standing water. Roth Construction Columbus was not aware of a structural defect and was not contracted to repair a structural defect. Those repairs would involve hiring an architect to inspect and develop a set of architectural plans to be submitted to the municipality for review and approval. It has been explained to Mrs. [Member Name Removed] s daughter, that a set of Architectural plans and a permit would likely be required to repair the structural roof framing in order for the porch to be brought up to the current building code requirements and prevent a roof leak. A second meeting with Summit Building & Roofing was held onsite to discuss solutions to the sagging rafter issue with Mrs. [Member Name Removed]. Mrs. [Member Name Removed] was offered a possible solution by Summit Building & Roofing of sealing the metal roof with a rubberized roofing material. This less expensive solution was offered to be completed at a time and material cost. Again, Roth Construction Columbus offered to repaint the stained areas on the porch ceiling after Summit Building & Roofing sealed the roof and treated the mold on the porch ceiling. Roth Construction Columbus has tried to reach a reasonable resolution with Mrs. [Member Name Removed]. We properly performed the work we were contracted to do; we were not hired to inspect and remedy a structural framing issue. We identified the leaking problem with the previous metal roof and developed a remedy for this problem. We inspected our work, performed additional work to try and help remedy the problem and offered solutions to fix her maintenance issue. It is not our responsibility to bring the existing structure up to code.

I had major water damage to my lower level. In addition to some other work left unfinished by another company. I can not say enough wonderful things about Roth construction, their crew and supervisors. They showed up on time and did the work in a timely manner. They took extra care to keep my home clean. They went over and above my expectations. They will be my first choice for any and all future needs!! Thank you Robert, Oleg and the entire crew, for not only the beautiful job but your kindness.

Erin Evec at Roth Construction was on a 3 way call with Mr. [Member Name Removed] and his insurance company on 6.13.17 at 1:39pm. The insurance company and Mr. [Member Name Removed] wanted to hire us to remove the tree from their home, they did not need our services to repair the tree damage because they had their own contractor. Because the power lines were down on the tree, we explained to Mr. [Member Name Removed] that we had to wait for AEP to remove the power lines. Their time frame to remove the power lines is out of our control. Ryan Berry, Project Specialist at Roth Construction, talked to Mr. [Member Name Removed] on 6.14.17 at 8am and the AEP had not removed the power line yet. We sent out our tree removal subcontractor to estimate the removal costs as the tree was bigger than we could handle. By 4pm on 6.14.17, the homeowners insurance company called us back and told us they did not want our services. I am sorry Mr. [Member Name Removed] was not happy with our services, we are a general contractor that was trying to help them and their insurance company get the tree removed from their home. Please call me if you would like to discuss this further. Jack Rothacker, Owner of Roth Construction Columbus, 614-777-4177. Thanks

We were never able to resolve this matter for they said one thing and we claimed another thing backed up by our plumber. They kept stating something that just wasn't true and the plumber verified that the leak was caused from someone working on the roof who broke off the exhaust pipe which had to be someone from Roth Construction because of the timing of it. Bottom line, they just didn't want to claim responsibility for their actions, because it would mean that they would have to fix the inside ceiling and repaint it. My husband and I just got very frustrated with them and eventually it lead to us not wanting to deal with them anymore.
Description of Work: Originally this company was hired by our insurance company to put new shingles on our roof. This part of the job was done well. Then came a problem which is what I am rating them on which is a small leak through the ceiling in an upstairs bedroom. Roth Construction could not find the problem from the roof and said it had to be a plumbing leak within the walls and therefore they were not responsible. However the exhaust pipe that was causing the leak came from the roof and was snapped off by someone on their roofing team. We have no actual water pipes running through the attic as they claimed. However, they were in denial about this, and so we went back and forth for several months until I had my own plumber break a hole in the ceiling to actually see the exhaust pipe inside. It was broken off and my plumber even said that it had to be broken off by someone from on the roof unless we have "ghosts" between our walls. The Roth Roofing team were the only ones on the roof at the time the leak took place.

Response from Roth Construction Company
We are very sorry to hear that Mrs. [Member Name Removed] is unhappy with the work that Roth Construction completed for her. I would like to explain the repairs we performed in 2014. We completed the roof replacement in June of 2014; we replaced shingles and the two boots around the base of the soil stack pipes on the roof. We did not remove or repair either pipe. Roth Construction never performed any other work on the home after 2014. In December of 2016, Rob Harris, Roth Construction's estimator, received a call from Mrs. [Member Name Removed]. She had some water spots on the inside of her home below one of the soil pipes and wanted to have a mitigation company her insurance carrier called to cut open the ceiling and determine where the water is coming from and treat any possible mold issues that were found. Mrs. [Member Name Removed] was to contact Roth Construction once the mitigator was scheduled to open the ceiling so that we could be there as well. If the water was caused by a roof leak, Roth Construction would have taken care of the water damage and if the leak was caused by something else, Mrs. [Member Name Removed] was to file another insurance claim. In January of 2017, Rob received a call from Mrs. [Member Name Removed]. She said that she talked with another contractor and he told her it was not the roof leaking but the moisture from the roof pipe. She stated that she was hiring them to fix the problem and was going to withdraw the insurance claim and "let us off the hook" for the moisture in the ceiling. Rob Harris asked if he could be out there when they cut open the ceiling, and she stated that she did not know when they were coming out. In March of 2017, Mrs. [Member Name Removed] called and Rob met with her at her home and discussed the possible cause of the water leak. Comparing the pictures we took of the soil stack in 2014 to the current pipe, the homeowner had hired someone to install a cap on her soil stack. She told us she was going to have her plumber come back and inspect the stack. Her plumber was to be on site 4/1/2017 and she was going to call us with what he found. In April of 2017, we received a call from Mrs. [Member Name Removed] stating the plumber was out and found that the soil stack was disconnected inside the roof. The plumber told her that he is surprised that she did not have more water damage. Roth Construction had last worked on the roof in June 2014 and Mrs. [Member Name Removed] stated that she had someone out to put a cap on the soil stack in 2016. Rob explained with Mrs. [Member Name Removed] that if the soil stack pipe was disconnected as a result of our work in 2014 she would have seen a lot more damage (mold, damaged drywall, bowed ceiling) rather than the 2sf of stained drywall. Roth Construction does not feel responsible for the repairs to the roof pipe or any interior damage to the home from our workmanship in 2014. We have explained this with Mrs. [Member Name Removed]'s insurance company and they agree that we are not responsible for the damage. Jack Rothacker Owner of Roth Construction

Roth Construction was very forthcoming to me regarding this surprise problem. The problem occurred when the roof was replaced, not by this contractor, and the sealing was not done properly. On April 23rd, our house was destroyed by a basement fire. There was no structural damage (burned frames, joists, etc) but the whole inside was ravaged by smoke and soot. All the floor coverings throughout the house had to be removed and the entire basement was stripped down to the metal studs. The furnace; water heater; sewer pipes; and water pipes in the basement were removed and recycled/discarded. The basement was soda-blasted (think sand-blasting with baking soda) and the walls, ceilings, floor joists, floors, and metal studs were all painted with kilz and binz (stain killing paint). In the upstairs large percentages of the drywall and insulation was removed and discarded (hunting smoke). All the insulation in the attic was removed (smoke) and all of the HVAC ducts in the whole house were recycled. Then every surface on the upper two floors were painted with kilz to help remove/seal any smoke smell. Once everything in the house was cleaned and sealed and the team was certain the smoke smell was gone, they started the reconstruction. New insulation, new drywall, new cabinets, new floor coverings, etc. It was a h*** of a process but Roth made it a lot easier than it could otherwise have been. I hope to never experience anything like this again, but if I do, my first call is to my insurance company and the second call is to Roth Construction -- they are AWESOME. I would give them my highest recommendation -- 10/10. NOTE: I choose N/A for the price column because I'm not certain of what everything cost because that's been handled by my insurance company.
Description of Work: Roth was the primary contractor in the almost 6 month process to restore our home after a fire. Their staff provided project management; subcontractor scheduling and coordination; and did lots of the "little" things that made it all come together.

I'm very, very pleased. They kind of take it first on interest to this. It is working out just fine so far. There are three representatives. They've been to our house three times who assess what was needed and what was needed to be done. Putting on a swirl in the ceiling is the lost part. They brought him over and make sure that he could do the job. I'd say personal interest. Quality of work is great. They're totally responsive. Punctuality is good. Punctuality, there's a footnote to that. They have to step out. They work for the swirl and the guy was two and a half hours late. That wasn't their fault.

Not well. He was incredibly nosy about where my husband was at, how long he'd be gone, where he was at, what my insurance coverage was, etc., and then called the water remediator aside (when he noticed my watching). I was baffled as to why anything or all of it couldn't be discussed in front of me unless perhaps they were colluding on how to divide up the work and entire rider coverage. It resulted in Roth not being hired for the job at all. I wasn't sure if I needed to file a police report or what after the visit.

Response from Roth Construction Company
Roth Construction was contacted by Mrs. [member name removed] insurance carrier on May 28, 2014 to provide them with an estimate for damages caused by water backing up in their basement. Ryan Berry, our Senior Project Specialist and employee for 11 years, called Mrs. [member name removed] and estimated the damage the next day, May 29. As with any new customer, Ryan talked with the homeowner about herself and her family in an attempt to get to know the customer better. The basement was “dried out” by another company and they discussed with Ryan what was damaged and needed to be replaced due to the water. We were there to provide the homeowner and their insurance company an estimate to repair the basement back to pre-loss condition. The homeowner disagreed with the scope of work that Ryan was estimating and wanted more items in her basement replaced due to the water. We received a call from Mrs. [member name removed] insurance carrier the next day and were told that our services were no longer needed. We closed our file and have had no other contact with the homeowner since. I am sorry that Mrs. [member name removed] is not happy with our company but we have a responsibility to estimate insurance damage to bring a property back to the condition it was in before the damage occurred. If Mrs. [member name removed] would like to speak with me further, I would be more than willing to talk with her. Jack Rothacker, Owner of Roth Construction.

They were excellent. They were extremely professional, their crew spent 2 and a half days here, they cleaned up, they did a really professional job as far as the roof and the painting and repair of the garage was concerned . They did a first class operation and I could tell by the way they did things. I spent a little over $20000. It was all good. They were timely, they showed up when they said they were going to and they have project managers who called to make sure that everything was fine.

Our insurance company recommended Roth construction to repair a leak in the ceiling in our family room. The repair technician replaced the damaged dry wall, sanded, then painted the entire ceiling. He did a great job, starting on Friday and completing it on Monday. We asked him to check a roof vent to try and find the source of the leak. This was not part of the contract, but he very willingly climbed on the roof, found that the caulking was cracked around the vent, and recaulked at no additional charge. We were very pleased with the work that was done and the timliness that the co. responded when we decided to have the work done. We will definitely use Roth Construction in the future.

The outcome was good, but getting there took a little longer than I expected. Insurance was paying for the roof but the insurance paperwork didn't cause all of the slowdowns. The person who evaluated the roof for repair v. replacement was very prompt and courtious. He indicated that samples of shingles would be dropped off at the house in the next few days. This actually took longer than his estimated time, and unbeknownst to me, they had provided me with a shingle sample that was not available in my area. I found this out when I made my selection. It took another 4-5 days to get the new shingle sample delivered. There was some slow communication from the company, but once we got to the point of scheduling the roof removal/replacement, they were very prompt. They cleaned up most of their mess but they left some shingle bags and debris in the backyard. It has been 6 months and so far I have been happy with the roof. No leaks!

Roth Construction came out to do the work, but never finished the job. They stopped working in June 2011. In November 2011, MetLife comes out to view the mold damage. In December of 2011, I contacted the insurance adjustor regarding the lack of completed work! In early January 2012, I sent him a bad evaluation. In April of 2012, MetLife informs me I am responsible for the mold damages. I called Roth in May and he informs me that the warranties for the work are expired. The owner comes out in June 2012 to tell me he thinks I am handy and should do the work myself. I got estimates for all of the work and it comes up to $13,900. Roth's owner refused to pay that amount! I went to the attorney general with the issue after this. The BBB was involved and they gave me 10 days to respond and did, but after 7 days, the BBB closed the case without giving me the full window to respond. The BBB said the case is resolved now... I feel like Roth Construction is ripping me off! The owner informed me that "people say we steal from insurance companies, but we don't." He couldn't give me an accurate account of where money was spent, even though he was paid in full. According to the BBB, everything he has told me to do(do the work myself and get estimates), was what I was telling him to do! They did dangerous, illegal things in my home- running a gas powered generator in my home, they installed an electrical panel with a short in it that can cause a fire, they left the house and windows unlocked several times, the insurance company paid them for three coats of paint and the painter told me he was only paid for two coats, and they demolished my staircase without permission or need. They painted over a dirty floor that they tried to get me to clean! They power washed my basement when they weren't supposed to, which lead to the mold in the basement. The basement was wet for weeks and months from the pressure washing and applied the paint without ventillation and it did not dry properly, resulting in mold from the drains, joists, floors, and walls. The insurance adjustor informed Roth Construction that the house was paid off, so no adjustor has to come out after the work is complete. The bait and switch--- An agreement between the adjustor out of Chicago was to cover my floor to be replaced as it was. They came in a put in the wrong flooring in and I informed the installers and the insurance company to let them know this was wrong. I didn't get the layout and plans for the floor until after the job was complete. I called the insurance adjustor and his only response is ,"Darn." They put down the cheaper chip-board flooring and they informed me that the job completed was equal to that of the job that was agreed upon. We caught him trying to leave several burned spots on boards and joists. The next time I called him out on the job of equal value for the floor and informed him that it is fraud, he suddenly changed his tune and wouldn't admit to doing this. I am going to figure out how much money he has stole through this insurance claim. I didn't have electricity that was supposed to be hooked up, etc. The contractors I have hired have stated that there is no way I have got $49,000 worth of work. They have done everything to "city code", not the upgraded work that they were paid to do! They have taken short cuts all around the house to save/make(STEAL) as much money as possible. They took my gas line down for my dryer and refused to put it back up. You can scuff the paint and it comes up with dirt and other paint chips under it. They are a cheap skate company! You have to fight them tooth and nail to get anything from them, like it is coming out of his pocket! The owner is a 'hit and run' type of guy- get your money and split! The list of poor business practices and poor quality of work continues to go on and on and on and on. Since I cliamed insurance fraud with the BBB, it seems like Roth is now trying to cover all of his tracks. I had to drop MetLife because they have been just as crooked as Roth! They have't honored their policies that I have coverage for. They have been continuously increasing my payments to keep their insurance. Essentially, my house hasn't been finished, and $49,000 for this job is rediculous. It is never a good thing when a company tells you that they have been through disputes with the BBB "a lot" and I don't have a chance. If they don't own up to the damages that they have caused, I certainly can't have them coming into my house either! You have no idea what type of further damage they are going to cause.
Description of Work: We had a fire in February 2011 and Roth Construction Company was recommended by my insurance company MetLife.

Response from Roth Construction Company
Roth Construction completed the work to (removed member name) home in June 2011. We were paid in full at the time of completion from (removed member name). In June 2012, (removed member name) expressed that he was not happy with the completion of the job. The owner of Roth Construction, Jack Rothacker, visited the home and discussed the workmanship. Roth said to (removed member name) that the issues he had were not related to the fire restoration work that we were hired to perform and we were not going to perform any more work. (removed member name) was not happy with this response, he contacted the Ohio Attorney General. They told him that this workmanship is not under their jurisdiction. He then contacted the Better Business Bureau. After hearing both sides of the dispute, the BBB decided that no action was required by Roth Construction and that he should contact his insurance company, Metlife. On January 7, 2014, Jack met with (removed member name) and Lorraine Boyer, Claim Supervisor for Metlife, at his home to discuss the issues. Lorraine stated in a letter to (removed member name) that she "observed no improper workmanship to the restoration/ repairs to your home as completed by Roth Construction." I am sorry that (removed member name) is still unhappy with the work we performed in his home but we believe that we performed the work to industry standards and according to the agreement that (removed member name) hired us to perform.

We had a kitchen fire about three years ago. These people were great from top to bottom. Every night when they leave they would clean up their mess. You will not believe our kitchen how nice it looks. They did a great job. Their price is a little high, but the kitchen was perfect. All those people have a program, they work off the hook, like a computer program, if you want to put a floor put down they just type in that kitchen floor and what kind you want and just about every company uses it. If you wanted something a little extra or you want a diagonal cut on all tiles to have an angle in the kitchen, they didn't charge us an extra for that. So, when they give you that quote, I think what they are doing on these program is allowing them for that kind of thing. They were excellent. I found out about these people is through my insurance company.
Description of Work: Roth Construction Company redid our kitchen because of a grease fire.
