DC Painting & Handymen

My husband and I purchased a 1930s house that needed quite a bit of cosmetic work. Almost all the rooms were wallpapered and the ceilings and walls were water and cigarette smoke stained. We asked Mike to provide us a quote to remove the wallpaper, paint and also open up the part of the wall that was recessed in the dining room. Mike clearly itemized the different pieces of the quote because we weren't sure what we would do ourselves and what exactly we could pay to have done at the time. Mike's bid for the wall demo and repair was very reasonable and he did a fantastic job. It looks like the archway was always there. He also worked around the schedule of the contractor refinishing the floors since the wall had to be removed before the floors were refinished and boards added. Then Mike had to come back to finish the walls. Then my husband and I decided that we weren't going to be able to paint the entire house ourselves, so we asked Mike to paint the downstairs for us after the wallpaper had been removed by another contractor. Mike did a great job. It is hard to tell it is the same house. And he accomplished 10x more than we could have done in the same timeframe. He also helped my husband out as other problems came up while they were both working in the house. For instance there was a patch on the ceiling in one of the kids bedrooms that my husband was having trouble fixing and Mike helped with that. He also picked up new door hinges for us on a trip to Lowes when I had gotten the wrong size. Mike was also very responsive as new tasks came up and he was quick to volunteer solutions or ideas for all those problems you encounter with older homes. When the wallpaper was removed in the stairwell, the walls were still slightly textured from what didn't come off. Mike added 2 days of work for us to skim coat the walls before painting them. Also, when we removed the countertops in the kitchen, which went all the way up the walls to the cabinets, we found that the walls behind needed quite a bit of repair. Mike was able to add that and painting the kitchen to his schedule, and worked around us getting the electrician in to repair the outlets first.

Everything and I mean everything looks great. The house looks brand new again. He did everything he said he was going to do and did a great job. I will definitely use him again and again. I really can't say anything negative even if I were to get picky about it.

The job started off great... BUT, ended on a very sour note.... Mike was extremely professional and polite, both in our first meeting and throughout the job. He was prompt with his estimate, thorough in his explanations of the work the needed/would be done, and stuck by his word while he was performing the work. As he completed rooms, the transformations were awesome! The drywall in our home was in poor shape. The finish work when our home was built 18+ years ago was below average, at best, and Mike began encountering some pretty rough walls as he got into the job. I appreciated his efforts to make them look the best he could. My wife enjoyed Mike's company in our home and so did our 1 year old. Mike seemed to be a great choice!! AND THEN THE END.... Mike finished up on a Tuesday. Mentioned to my wife he was finished, and she cut him a check for the remaining balance (after giving him half down, plus a sizable draw 1/2 way through). I came home later that night to find areas that were not finished. Not just not finished to my liking, but not finished AT ALL. Places where he spackled and never repainted. Areas of our stairway that clearly only received one coat, as I could see the previous color through it! Plate covers left off, Window Hardware not put back after refinishing. Stain from the windows on the finished walls. Paint splatter on the trim. Areas left un-caulked. I was unhappy to say the least. I immediately sent Mike a text message, one of his preferred ways of communication, asking for a call back, stating things were left unfinished. No return call. I followed up with calls, emails, text messages...ALL VERY CORDIAL AND RESPECTFUL, asking why the job was left unfinished and to please return my call. I EVEN OFFERED TO PAY HIM TO COME BACK AND FIX HIS MISTAKES!! Still, NO RETURN CALL OR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF MY CALLS OR EMAILS. This job clearly grew, and I knew that. The work Mike had to put in to make some of these walls look good was not unnoticed or undisclosed. I was aware he may have underbid once I saw the amount of work he was doing, but he mentioned he would stick by his price. I was extremely pleased, at that point....thinking highly of his integrity...guess I was wrong. So, bottom line, we were fooled and I don't want you to be. Mike took our final payment, regardless of the finality of the job and has never returned my call. Disappointed is an understatement. We had the utmost respect for Mike and this is how he ended it...

Overall we were EXTREMELY HAPPY with the work Mike did for us. He was always good about answering the phone when I called him. He was also not hesitant to call me when he had a question about something we might not have covered. We would/will hire him again when we have more work for him to do! His prices were unbeatable, especially considering how much work he did for us. He painted two of our homes in the span of about 3 weeks. He met all of our deadlines and didn't have to come back to fix anything. A+++++

Mike responded to my call and visited our house to give us an estimate. He was able to give an estimate on the spot. We confirmed it over the email later. His ability to be contacted over email worked well for us. He did the job over two days. Used covers where he walked and painted to protect the floors. Was courteous and on time. Quality of the paint job is great.

His quote was reasonable and competitive and was quickly provided. Starting from my first communication with him, did what he said he would do and showed up when he said he would. My wife and I were at odds over painting a large wall with some minor scuffs. Even though this would have been additional work for him he provided his opinion to the contrary which saved us money. He was extremely professional and courteous the whole time. The work was done effeiciantly and cleanly and the quality was excellent.

They are competent, clean and have good ideas on how to fix things. They would thoroughly clean up everyday before they left. I will continue to use this company over and over again in the future!

Mike did not disappoint us. He was punctual, reliable, and trustworthy, but best of all his work was outstanding. My husband, who is a perfectionist, was happy.

I have used other companies and been very disappointed. DC Painting will not disappoint you. The work is extremely professional and done correctly. While you may have to wait, that is normal for a very, very good painter/contractor. You may find someone that promises you tomorrow, but will either not show up or not give you the quality work you want. We ended up staying in our home and using DC Painting. The work was excellent and we would recommend him to others.

I called them and spoke with the person who answered and explained the project and that I found his name on Angie's List. He said that he was busy and would call me back and I never heard back from him.

Mike was 2 hours late for appointment. His prices were great so we called to hire him for the job. Never heard from him again!

From the first phone call to every email correspondence, Mike was professional and courteous. He and his assistant were on time every single day they worked on the project. They did quality work and we are very pleased. I have hired Mike in the past and will continue to hire him for future work. He is ethical and honest.

I've used DC before, and their professionalism and attention to detail was outstanding. I still had the business card from before, and when I called Mike was able to come out the next day and take a look at my needs. He was able to give me a quote right away, and schedule my appointment. Not only was the quote exact, they did more than expected for the same price.

Everything went extremely well. They were always on time, honored their estimates and were very helpful with other things that came up. I would recommend them to anyone.

He was very, very good. He is very clean and neat. He always cleans up after himself. He almost leaves the place cleaner than it was before. He always calls ahead if he's going to be there just a bit late.

The quality of their work was very high. They were competitively priced too. They hadn?t started the work as soon as I thought they would, but it had taken them less time to finish than what they had expected.

We had DC Painting and Handymen paint a master bedroom and bathroom. The job took two days, but after the job was completed we had to have them out to fix a few things. We tend to be pretty particular when we hire pros to do work, and we had to have DC Painting back out because some of the lines weren't as straight as we would have liked, and in some places when cutting in they got paint on cabinets and tile. However, when we explained our concerns Mike, the owner, was very responsive. He came out on Labor Day and fixed everything that we were concerned about.

Since Mike is a handyman, he does some handyman work too. He is into the painting job more than the handyman service. I am waiting for the weather to get better, so that he can come and do some handyman job. He is excellent and great. I can?t complain about his work, but the only complain that I have is that, I can?t get him when I want him. He is really good. That?s why I am holding on him to come and get the job done. He doesn?t call back. I would recommend him to anybody. The only problem with him is that, while he is painting you can?t get him to do anything else. He charges a good price and does perfect work. I had some inside painting done by him in fall last year which was really good. I had some roof problem, as we had a bad storm. I got the roof fixed by the roofers, but the inside of my ceiling was leaking. So, I had to get that taken care of, as it was a mess. He put plastic all over everything in the kitchen. He also covered the sofa and a plastic plant. He worked for 3 days and did all the painting. We had a problem with one thing. The painter, who painted our house the last time before Mike could paint, used different colors of yellow. So, Mike had to go through all the paints and had to figure out the right one, which he did perfectly. When he was done, he gathered up all the plastic drapes and everything was perfect. He also vacuumed the floor with some kind of a special machine. When he was through with the work, it looked like nothing was disturbed the whole time he was here, for 3 days. He really did a good job. I am waiting for a good downpour and yesterday we had a downpour, but it was too brief. Despite the fact that they said it would rain and there hasn?t been a drop of rain today in my area. The last time he came out to get the job done was on a weekend, as he was still painting and I had a few leaks in my bathroom. I wanted to get the leaks fixed before they got worse. So, he knew that it?s going to rain and that?s why he came on a weekend. He did everything that I could have expected him to do. He also did some other things that I didn?t even ask for. He is really great. I had other people come and do some work. I was not happy with their work, but Mike is really great. I spent a lot when he worked in my bathroom because I had a lot going on. I also had some toilet problems such as not being able to flush correctly and he worked on that too. There were 3 bathrooms that had problems. He fixed those bathrooms and they are all working great now. The work that was needed for my bathroom was just general stuff and the other bathrooms needed more work to be done. I don?t remember the price that he charged, but I think he is fair in his pricing. If he charges more, then he really does extra work. I haven?t been able to get a hold of him lately. He has to do the outdoor painting when the weather is good. If I see a day coming with 3 days of rain, then I would try to call him. I can?t think of anybody better. His punctuality is great too. I will surely use him again in the future.

Mike came out right away and gave us an estimate. We negotiated the details via email. He began the work when he said he would and came on time that day. He did the work over four days so that walls and paint could dry properly. He finished when he said he would. He usually brought a young man to help. They were very clean, laid down a tarp where they were walking in and out and cleaned up every day.

I think they did an excellent job. They had to do a lot of patching around windows and sanding of the trim around the windows and doors, and they cleaned up as they worked. I changed my mind about the colors in two rooms after they were painted, and Mike was cheerful, accommodating, and speedy about repainting. One room was painted the wrong shade because the company had changed color cards, but Mike found the paint I originally wanted and repainted this room for no extra charge. We had hoped to have everything painted by our move-in date, but the job took a week longer due to family obligations and health concerns on the part of DC Painting, and due to my decision to change the paint colors. Mike and his assistant worked over the weekend, and late into the night on several days to try to finish the job as quickly as possible. They were neat, considerate, friendly and helpful at all times. Mike also offered information about attic insulation, patching cracked exterior walls, and maintaining the house at a constant temperature and humidity to minimize further settling.

They are very responsible and do excellent work. The work is performed by the owner and helper.

We were very happy with the work that Mike and his helper Jason had performed. The ceiling repairs were unable to be located, the painting was done very well, alot of attention was paid to detail. Also outside repairs were completed to damaged wood. They were very meticulous with cleaning up after themselves.

Theyarrived on time and did the work as scheduled. Very knowledable regarding how to treat this poorly painted surface. The garage looks SO much better. My only complaint was that clean up could have been a bit better. (Pant chips on the garage floor and on the newly sealed driveway which would not sweep off easily. Also found some wet paint that looked ke it had been dumped in the back yard or perhaps someone rinsed off a paint brush in the back yard but didn't rinse it off the grass. Not good if you have dogs on that grass.)

We are expecting a baby and are under a time crunch here to get the painting done. Mike was able to get the job done within the short time limit even though he was booked well into June. He and his crew did a great job in prepping the walls and covering up furnitures. We are happy with the results and we really appreciate their effort to work with us under the time presure. Thanks!

i received three quotes on this job, and theirs fell in the middle. they were very pleasant people and communicated well with me. they exceeded my expectations. i will definitely use them again.
