Beware, this guy is a crook. Not only did he take us for $325, he faked a death so not to return to fix the leaks. Was told his work was 100% guaranteed, and he was ‘sure’ to identify the root-cause. Gave a quote for $325, and told us the job would take 45 minutes, a little concerned, that $325 for less than a 1 hour worth of work was right, went against my better judgement. The biggest mistake was paying by check, not credit card, thus had no recourse. When he came to the house was on the property for 30 minutes, took him 20 minutes to set-up the ladder, and only spent 10 minutes on the roof… a complete scam-artist. When the leak was never fixed, we called him to return, only for him to start faking crying a family death, which he couldn’t return to the property for another week. Never showed, and ran away with our $325 check. If you’re still dumb enough to use this crook, and he shows-up on the property, run fast. We are filling a lawsuit to gain our refund. True Crook, True Scam Artist, makes me not want to use Angie’s List. Buyer Beware

Tiller was one of three Angie's List roofers from which I received estimates. Tiller's estimate was toward the lower end of the three. James is a friendly, but no-nonsense guy. He doesn't waste your time with fancy sales pitches. He lets you know what your best options are and why and tells you which products he uses and why. He was at my home for about 45 minutes, spending half the time on the roof and half the time showing me his products. He e-mailed me an estimate within 48 hours with several options we had discussed. After we agreed on price and signed the contract, his crew was able to start as soon as the weather looked like it might hold for a couple of days (this was the wettest Spring ever in central Ohio). The crew was hard-working and friendly. The roofing took 3 days only because it rained at least once every day and they spent much of their time putting down & removing protective tarps. They did a good job of this since I had no leakage inside my home. They spent much time with a magnet on wheels picking up nail & metallic debris. This was pretty thorough, but we later found the occasional stray nail. Frankly, with the size of the job, I think this is totally acceptable. James came to the house within days of the job being completed and took me on a full inspection of the roof. He stayed and answered all questions I had and never seemed in a hurry to leave. My roof looks magnificent!
Description of Work: Tiller Roofing replaced my large ranch roof with Certainteed Landmark dimensional shingles. They replaced all gutters with 6" aluminium gutters & 4" aluminium downspouts. They installed Leaf-Relief gutter protection system on all gutters.

Virgil the owner was out couple times to inspect it. He decided that the chimney cap had a seam that probably needed a cover tape and some caulking. Supposedly his crew came out and did the job. So, needless to say it still leaks when it rains hard. I notify Virgil and it seems that the work was done right, I will probably have to get another company to inspect it.
Description of Work: I have use Tiller roofing few times in the past and always had good results. . This time I called them to fix a leak that when it rains hard the leak goes from the roof or chimney behind the fireplace to the basement rafters.

They came out and confirmed that the problem was not with the roof itself but with the mortar in the chimney needing tuckpointing. Because they don't do this work , I'll have to get another company instead. But even though I wasn't able to use their services, I experienced the representatives from Tiller as exceptionally friendly and professional, and I would not hesitate to turn to them again in the future.

They replaced the entire roof almost 5 years ago and have had several leaks. They have repaired 3 times I think. They use lots of caulking. Repairs will propably last at least until our warranty is over. Update to Tiller response of 03/04/2011 Let me make myself very clear, this is not about the chimneys because you all do not want to hear that the flashing is leaking. Mason came out May of 2007, retuck pointed chimneys and in their professional opinion bricks are ok. Unless he lied. Chimney that is in worst section of roof, believe me we are very aware of that, but for reasons we are not getting into, chimney can't be moved or taken down. You all say bricks are bad, mason says flashing was not done right. Also told James on 02/28/2011 that they could look at the chimneys, if not that was ok, we had decided to hire someone else to make repairs around chimneys. Lets move on to all the other leaks. Called Tiller the morning of 02/28/2011 after awaking at 4:30am to water dripping from the ceiling on to a chair, next to our bed. Told James I was very upset with their co. Upon looking in the attic, it was evident that area had been leaking before and we DID NOT KNOW until water started coming thru the ceiling. We checked the other area above the other bedroom which has same roof line and sure enough that was leaking and had been leaking because of the condition of the insulation. Again, we DID NOT KNOW that had been leaking. The third leak was our bathroom vent which took 4 buckets to catch the drips during the first ice storm, which was the 1st of Feb. Did not call right away to report that leak because damage had already been done, we did not expect anyone to go on the roof with two inches of ice on it and I had to go out of town for several days just after the ice storm to tend to an ill parent. The bathroom leak was the last thing on my mind. Second ice storm it leaked again which we did not know(bucket caught two inches of water). You do not think after every rain and ice storm that one would have to check for leaks, but now we do. After inspecting the whole attic on the morning of 02/28/2011 we realized the bathroom vent had been leaking for awhile and again we DID NOT KNOW until water started coming thru on the first ice storm of this year. We also had a new leak on the front porch that started on 02/28/2011. Virgil came out the afternoon of the 28th to look at our issues which we were very grateful for the quick response. Two days later Virgil came out to fix issues before the next rain. Again, we were very grateful and I thanked him several times for coming out so quickly. Virgil told me the bathroom vent did not have wide enough rubber around it and he redid that. The two areas above our bedrooms he said the caulking had come out/loose. He put more in and said we would have to get on the roof about every 4-5 years to recaulk those areas, because there was nothing else that could be done. Those two areas have nothing to do with the flashing. I pointed out another area in our laundry room to Virgil (peeling paint). Told him my husband and I were going to make an access hole to see if that had been leaking and I would let them know. I am letting you all know now, the water from the bathroom vent leak had been running down to that room. We now have four ceilings in house which have to be repaired and have not had a leak free roof since installation of May 2006. In response to them saying we had never previously contacted them for these other leaks is because as I stated above, we DID NOT KNOW the bathroom vent and both areas above the bedrooms had been leaking until damage was done and water started to come thru the ceiling. The new porch leak was found after inspecting everything on Feb 28th. My husband and I have been, we feel more then patient considering all the extra damage we now have to repair. I do not think anyone would be satisfied if they were in our shoes. We would love to be satisfied customers.

Response from Tiller Roofing Inc
Homeowner called this week and was very upset with us stating they had several leaks, but have never previously contacted us other than a few times in past years for a leak around a chimney and a leak in the bathroom. To repair the leaks in the past, we replaced the chimney flashing and the bathroom vent flashing, but have never heard from this member since the repairs were completed a few years ago. The chimney in question, in our professional opinion, in poor condition and contains bricks with cracks. There is no advantage for us to pass off a roof or flashing leak as a masonry leak as we waste time and money to make repeat trips when it would be easier and more convenient for us to permanently repair the leak. If the chimney was in good condition there would never be a leak on this chimney. A chimney mason can easily correct this problem, but homeowner refuses to believe this is a masonry leak and will not contact a mason to correct. The chimney is also in the worst section of roof possible that contains two ridges and two valleys that run into the chimney and an odd flat section built into the back of the chimney that is very small needed to connect it to the ridge. We installed EPDM rubber flashing on the flat section of the chimney. A seam came loose on the EPDM material and we installed pressure-senisive tape to re-seal the seam, which is the manufacturer's specified repair for this type of material. Another suggestion would be to remove the chimney and install a different type of venting system that can be easily sealed to prevent leaks. The sticky stuff around the bathroom vent fan is a pressure-senstive flashing that is used because the manufacturer that fabricated the vent does not make the roof flange wide enough to extend under the shingles. There was also an area where the wall flashing has came loose from normal expansion and contraction. We re-fastened the flashing and re-sealed to the wall with a quality sealant, which is the normal and proper way to seal the flashing to the surface. Please note when the customer called we were there the same day to inspect and made the repairs as soon as possible. To suggest that we are making repairs only to buy time on the warranty is an incorrect assumption as there is no advantage for us to make repeat trips and temporary repairs, as we lose money for time and fuel with every trip we make to this home as it is at least a half hour drive each way. Taking pride in our workmanship and standing 100% behind our warranties is the main reason why we did not hide behind a fictitious name and placed our own personal name on the company. Customers to us are life-long customers and a time period of warranty is of no concern to us. We would love nothing more than to have this customer completely satisfied and we sincerely apologize since we have not performed to this members expectations.

They were very good. The job was excellent. The price was good. The co-owner came and inspected the work after it was done to my satisfaction and he went over the whole thing with me. They used excellent materials. The craftsmanship was excellent and the price was very good. They are very concerned about the quality of work they represent. I've had both owners come out; it is an older gentleman and a younger one. They came out and gave an estimate first. They cleaned up very well. The price was very fair in comparison to the other bids I got. They came out the very first day that I called them. I would absolutely use them again.

The process from quote to completion was timely and professional. The work was performed in sub-freezing weather, and the men had to clear the roof of snow and ice. However, they worked over several days until the job was completed. They were diligent in picking up the old shingles and nails, etc., that hit the ground. They fixed small problems we had with leaking gutters, and a small hole in a rubber roof. We are very pleased with the results.

After a recent heavy rainfall, we had a recurrence of a leak experienced 1 1/2 years ago. The call was returned my initial phone call within 24 hours, scheduled an estimate for the following Mionday. Received a call a few hours before the scheduled time to arrice 30 minutes early. Mr. Tiller arrived as coordinated. Mr. Tiller emailed us the estimate on Wednesday. We signed the estimate and returned it to Tiller roofing with a 50%deposit on Friday. Mr. Tiller called the following Wednesday to schedule our repair the following morning. The repairmen showed as scheduled, and completed the repair, a;long with all clean up. The repair consisted of rebuilding a valley in the roof and bringing it to current code. I highlighted the many small steps because Tiller Roofing did everything they said the would on time or early.

Tiller Roofing, Inc replaced our roof about 5 years ago. Recently, we developed a leak due to the angle of the roof line where it meets a lower section of the roof and an upper window. The owner, Jim Tiller came out and inspected the roof. He developed a solution to stop further leaking. Thereafter, company workers came out and fixed the roof as well as replaced and painted fairly large wood trimwork around the upper window area. The workers also repaired an area on the roof around a vent pipe. The workers were polite and left the work area in a clean condition. These repairs and trim replacement were done at no cost to us.

We had severe ice damming two winters in a row. The second winter (2009/2010) was worse and caused water to leak into the house in four different rooms. We had six different roofing estimates. James Tiller was by far the most knowledgeable and professional. He answered our many many questions and always in a way that we completely understood what was to be done. We also wondered what the color of shingle we choose would really look like and James sent us a list of about 10 or so houses with the same roof so we could see what the color looked like. The crew was timely and very accommodating of the shared driveway we have with the neighbors. They cleaned up well and were protective of our new landscaping. He was a little more expensive than some of the other companies, but totally worth it. James came out after the work was completed to do do a followup and made sure everything was perfect. We would recommend and use him for any roofing need in the future!

Included in above remarks. James Tiller is quick to respond to customer contact and follows up with a timely date to begin work. If James Tiller is at another job then Virgil Tiller follows up with the same characteristically good qualities exemplified by this company.I could not be more satisfied for the work performed and the fair price. I have used Tiller Roofing before and they are the first company I call when I need these services.

Installed new copper step flashing. Owner stopped by after work was completed and checked it all out with me. Entire work area was picked up and left clean. James and his two member work crew are outstanding in terms of the quality of their work and the integrity of their services. They are truly commited to customer satisfaction and they demonstrate these qualities in everything that they do. Highest recommendation for Tiller Roofing!

Everything was wonderful. They were just great at every stage. They moved along very quickly with the work without rushing. Their price was competitive with everyone else we contacted, and the people were just great. They did not leave any mess, and we were very pleased with every aspect of their work. They came recommended by Obetz Hardware, and we really liked what they said. They were very prompt and adhered to their timeline. When they found that there was a bad spot in the sub-roofing plywood, they made that repair at a reasonable price after speaking with us about it. We couldn't be happier with their work, and would not hesitate to use them in the future.

Tiller was great. Mr. Tiller came out and gave a quick estimate of the cost to replace our roof. Their estimate was comparable with the other quotes received, as well as the cost our insurance company was willing to pay. Ultimately we went with another company for two reasons. 1) Tiller required 1/2 down for the down payment. This was more than the initial check we received from our insurance company and would be a little difficult for my husband and I to come up with 2) We were able to upgrade from the 3 tab shingle to the multidimensional shingle for almost the same total price with the other company we went with. Had I not received an estimate from the other roofer, we would have gone with Tiller.

We appreciate the opportunity to provide an estimate for this member. Our policy asking for half down is negotiable. The main reason we ask for half down is to offset the customers who may be late paying the final bill waiting for the final payment from insurance companies. Most estimates are negotiable and we are usually able to match all reasonable estimates provided by other reputable companies when afforded the opportunity to do so.

I contacted Tiller Roofing after two other roofing companies had left info on my door that they could see lots of (wind) storm damage to my roof. I trusted Tiller to give me an honest appraisal because I had hired them to do work previously. Virgil Tiller came out in just a couple days, looked the roof over and told me I did have a few small problems, but overall, the roof was in good shape. He sent me an estimate and after I returned it with the deposit, his crew was back in two days to fix the foof. I will be calling Tiller with any future roofing needs.

Virgil came out first, climbed on to my garage roof, then onto the roof of my 2 story house. This was in response to wind damage. He said I definitely needed a new roof, as shingles were missing. He gave me an estimate which included all aspects of roof replacement, flashing, etc. His was not the lowest bid, but well within my insurance company's estimate. I wanted a premier dimensional roof, the best you can buy. I also liked the fact that he uses the same crew all the time, all of whom are family members. After the job was completed, totally cleaned up (no nails or old tar paper or shingles), Virgil came out to inspect the job. He didn't like something they either omitted or errored on, so he called them out to fix whatever it was. I would not have known about it, because I don't go up on the 2nd story roof. Neighbors all commented on the beauty and quality of their work, and it looks outstanding. I would recommend Tiller to anyone. My daughter and son-in-law are about to have Tiller replace their very large home's roof.
