Why work with us? Southern Grove Landscaping was established nineteen years ago, in 1986, by a graduate from Ohio State University who studied in depth what it takes to achieve perfection in your landscape surroundings.
Award-winning landscapes do not just look good for one season -- an excellent landscape should transcend the season with plants chosen for our Ohio climate and accents of stonework and design variation that command attention. That's our specialty.
While everyone thinks about flowers in the spring and mowing the grass in the summer, your yard needs special attention throughout the year: during the winter delicate plants should be wrapped or transferred inside; in the spring the landscaping always needs extra special care to make sure the plants and lawn start the year off right. Summer heat means that proper watering and fertilization are important to keep plants healthy, whereas in the fall, trees and shrubs begin to go dormant, so transplantation then preven ts shock to the plant and helps to ensure healthy new growth in the spring.
We are pleased to announce our nineteenth anniversary of making Columbus and surrounding areas beautiful. We're humbled by the positive response we've had from our clients and we hope to make many more beautiful landscapes for you and your families to enjoy. Give us a call and we will meet with you for a free consultation at your convenience.

It went great and I've gotten so many compliments from neighbors, family and potential buyers. Rich and his crew are amazing. They come when they say they will and work their rear ends off till the job is done. I couldn't be more pleased with how Rich squeezed me in yet never made me feel like my yard was any less important than any other big jobs they had going. He was also wonderful when I realized I couldn't afford to do all we had originally plan and drew up a new estimate. You cannot go wrong with this company!
Description of Work: Edged and mulched all along the front of a large ranch house as well as in the back yard in a small area.

I guess he misunderstood me that I wanted a nice looking landscaped flower bed and asked for a price to accomplish that. He was friendly and we chatted a while so I thought he knew what I wanted. Then I got their estimate with only a list of 7 perennials and a cost of $16.50 per plant to install. I have no idea how many plants I would need, don't know how far apart you would plant them etc. So I figured he had bigger fish to fry, so to speak and was kind of blowing me off. I have since planted a packet of "hummingbird and butterfly" seeds from Burpee in the bed and they are starting to bloom and it looks great. I think I'll stick with that. Mike Henry

Overall experience would be excellent instead of just "good", but over the years, I have had to call this service twice to tell them that the grass clippings were removed from my front yard and not my back yard - obviously - I wanted the grass cuttings removed from ALL of my yard......................Owner apologized - no problem with grass clippings being left in back yard recently.................Job well done otherwise. No problem whatsoever with snow removal service!!!!

He gave me a extremely reasonable price. The biggest help was that they did this work on very short notice and were able to squeeze me in. It's really hard to find a good landscaper and I've been looking for someone like them for a while and I'm happy to say they've got my business from here on out.

The overall experience was great - Rich was quick to respond to schedule a day/time for a free estimate. He promptly provided a detailed proposal with prices for each service so I could select which service I wanted them to perform. They started the job within a week and finished in a couple days. I am very satisfied with the quality of work and would definitely use Southern Grove again as they did a great job at a fair price.
Description of Work: I had Southern Grove install new landscaping beds in the backyard, mulch and freshen up existing beds and lay flagstone in one small area for a BBQ and install pavers for a walkway to the garage. I provided the plant material and stone.

Spoke with Mr. Cassidy about what we wanted done. The next day he came to our home and did a detailed walk-thru with us. Work was completed in two days and we are extremely pleased with the results. We had an area that needed to be enlarged and all other landscape beds redefined. The crew was very courteous and worked very hard. Mr. Cassidy gave us some excellent suggestions and we will definately use Southern Grove Landscaping again! Everyone involved was prompt and did an excellent job of cleaning up.

We've used them for about 10 years. They are reliable and smart about what will flourish and what won't. If they do mulch, it is around $1,000. We normally pay anywhere from $100 to $1,000 depending on what they are doing. We didn't have to pay anything the last time they were here because they had originally planted the tree that died.

Description of Work: Had a 12' X 14' stone patio that needed to be repaired or replaced. The patio had weeds growing between the stones. Wanted a solution that would last. Requested ideas and options. Rick suggested the following: - Re-level two sections of square patio stones - Remove weeds from the patio - Add super sand between patio stones to prevent future weed growth - Glue a patio stone back together - Drill and spike in timber to hold the paver patio in place

It went great. He listened to what I wanted, as far as easy maintainance, etc. The only things I said was I wanted the Sancherry tree and maybe use my mums if possible. He outlined some ideas, and mailed it to me, as did the other company. This company was some cheaper so I called him to schedule. I asked that it be done by July 23. However, the weather did not cooperate, and it was July 27 when the job was done. I completely understood because it had become very hot and humid for several days. It is dangerous to work outside in that heat for too long. It worked out fine. I just wanted my son to see it before he left from his visit home. That worked.
Description of Work: I had a couple estimates done for some general landscaping on my front lawn. I selected Southern Grove mainly because of the price. I liked what both suggested, etc. Southern Grove did a great job, I really like what they did. They changed it a little bit from what we thought, but I had asked them to use some mums that I had, which they did. They kept it simple, low maintainance, and some color. I really like what they did. Then to boot all, the final price was lower than had originally estimated, which was a welcome surprise. He was very helpful in explaining what I need to do to and he said to call him in the fall so we can discuss pruning, etc. I will definately use this company again. I highly recommend them. They did this in one day. One note, I NEVER give A's on all areas. The only reason I gave a couple of B's was it took a little longer for him to get to my job, but that was the weather, not so much him or his crew.

I’ve used them for years. They are in the same community that I’m in and I discovered them years ago and used them ever since. I have a lot of mulch. When I hit 30 bags a mulch, I couldn’t do it anymore. At various times over the years, I’ve had them replace some plants and things. I would continue to use them in the future.

I was pleased with all aspects of their company. The plants that they purchased were good quality. They were professional. They came when they were supposed to and did what they were supposed to do at a good price. Everything about the experience was positive and that's why I contacted them about the lawn mowing. I will certainly use them again for any landscaping work and hope the lawn service turns out as well.
Description of Work: I used Southern Grove Landscaping for landscaping. I had them move existing shrubs and bushes. I requested a quote from several folks. Rich from Southern Grove Landscaping was the most persistent and seemed eager for my work. He'd sent multiple emails. I phoned to discuss details with Rich on Friday, September 3. He was a little pushy but I wanted the work done before Labor Day and was glad he could squeeze me in so quickly. The other landscaping company couldn't get to me for another week and a half. Rich said it would be $90 for my double lot, front and back mowed once and $45 for a maintenance mow, and he said he could do the first that day. I thanked him, and agreed to have the lawn mowed once and then we would discuss more work if I was pleased with the outcome. He agreed. I should clarify that my lawn was overgrown due to my recent disability or I'm sure the price would have been the maintenance fee of $45 for the double lot. This was a reasonable price for the size of the property and comparable to all other companies I researched. I explained that I had small bushes along the front of the house to mark a new flower bed. There were also solar lights marking the space. (I had planned to do this with my children if I was physically able or it could go for the time being. I also added that there was a rose bush and small flower garden in the back along the fence. The back flower garden had large rocks near it and two trellis so it was easily marked, and I didn't want them touched. Finally I asked that a small, circular 'garden' that my six year old planted be left if at all possible but that I would understand if they mowed it. I did give the exact location of this one-foot round planting near my garage door. I also asked that they mow outside the fence between my gate and the trash. I made it very clear they were not to use the gate for the car as it had been damaged in a recent storm and wasn't stable. They were use the smaller gate only. The yard was mowed by the time I got home. At first glance, it seemed a trim job and I was happy to see it done but as I went to the back yard it was a different story. There were two very large circles of weeds left - one was about 15 feet around while the under was close to ten feet around. I thought perhaps they were interrupted in their work and couldn't complete it. I waited form the return. Meanwhile, I took time to go over the property to inspect the work. My child's 'garden' was left and the hosta bed was trimmed nicely. All the grass clippings gone, but two of my small boxwoods in my flower bed were mowed down. Upon closer inspection I found seven of my solar lights were also damaged. Some had been mowed over and set aside for me, but a few others were crushed and cut by the mowers and were in scattered pieces throughout the yard. The back gate was mowed nicely as was outside the fence but the gate for the car had been opened, and several of the boards were detached from the supports as they tried to close it. The positive side of this is that now both sides of this gate are evenly closed. I couldn't get them to line up and had to use a board propped against them to keep them closed. I reported these things to the owner, Rich. I asked that he personally inspected the property. He apologized for the damage and asked that I send an itemized list to him and we would rework the bill. I asked that they come back to finish the work. After several weeks, I received a bill but it took more prodding to get them to return and finish mowing. I don't think Rich actually visited the property as he spoke of things which he would have known to be different if he had gone to the property. When they finally brought the mower back to the property on October 15, one man mowed down the large 'crop circles' in my backyard while another trimmed the edges. There were only a few weeds they had missed the first time so I was glad for the 'extra'. However while trimming, the second man trimmed my rose bush down to a stub with a few 3"-4" branches and obliterated one of my grape vines climbing that was climbing up on the fence. He also removed all the garden vines on the fence. These still have enough left to retrain them to grow back on the fence. I have sent an itemized list of the cost to replace the plants that will not grow back, and the solar lights. I decided to forgo the large gate repair because I didn't think it was worth the fight any more. Yesterday, I mailed the package which included the bill with my notations removing the cost of the itemized list, copies of the plant prices found on the internet, and added copies of our recent correspondence including the original contact discussions and my reports of some of the damage. When I got home, I received a bill for the "second mowing". I dread where this could go. I have a feeling it is going to be a hassle - which is what I was trying to avoid by hiring the work to be done in the first place. I don't need the added stress that this has caused. They appeared to do well on commercial properties, which were the reference I'd checked before contracting Southern Grove. However I will not use them again to handle residential property. I do not recommend them for residential service.
Description of Work: Mowed front yard and back yard of overgrown lawn. Trimmed around foundation of house and garage, and trimmed around some of the fencing. Mowed outside of fence in alley. Removed grass clippings or mulched them.

Overall, the staff from Southern Grove Landscaping did a decent job with the landscaping design and plantings in the front of my house. Three Rhododendrons and a [beautiful] flowering plum tree were in the landscape design, but unfortunately none of these expensive things lasted for more than two years, despite working hard with the landscaping company and my local nursery to keep them alive. Rhododendrons just don't do well in the south winter sun nor in soils that aren't acidic enough - and no amount of watering and fertilizers for acid-loving evergreens could salvage the dying rhodies. The flowering plum suffered from black knot the first season I had it and even the most expensive chemicals I bought from the nursery weren't enough to rid the tree of this horrible disease. These losses amounted to almost $1300 of the total cost and was very depressing to me since they only had a 1 year warranty (and the fact that I spent well over a hundred dollars with my local nursery in nursing these things during their first two growing seasons was another shock to my checking account). One of the best things that came out of my experience is that I learned to do my own research on what grows best in my particular yard. Even though I had to replace most of the things that Richard's staff planted for me within two years of the work being done, it was nice enough to enjoy for at least a short while. The thing that looks the best - even after everything else had died - is the retainer wall around the corners of my house. I eventually had another landscaping company come in and complete the wall around the entire front and south side of my house, which gave it a "finished" look. Overall, I think the experience with Southern Grove was fair even though I had a few issues with dying plantings shortly after their services were rendered.
Description of Work: Southern Grove removed old shrubbery and designed/planted new shrubs, trees, and perennials in addition to creating a retainer wall around both corners of my house. I don't remember the exact date, but it was late summer of 2004.

I was going through Angies List calling companies that provided mowing services. My experience today was quite frustrating until I called Southern Grove Landcaping and spoke with Rich. Very pleasant man! He listened as I explained my situation. He agreed to come out on Monday to look at the yard. He took my address, phone number and email address, as he would email the estimate to me on Monday night. He let me know there was no pressure and if I wanted to use his services I would be placed on the schedule for Wednesday which is the day he provides mowing services. Long story long, I was able to get mowing services for Monday from another company not on Angies List so I called Rich to cancel the appointment. When he answered he greeted me saying hi Jacqueline, as he saw my number on the caller ID and had already entered me into his system. That was very impressive! He apologized for not being able to come out sooner due to prior scheduling but would keep me in his system. I told him there was no need to apologize that I understood and appreciated his willingness to work with me. I told him I would call back if things didn't work out. He was perfectly okay with that. Rich you made my day. Thank you!!!
