Description of Work: We had a 20 year old unit that needed to be replaced. The geo company that manufactured the unit was out of business and parts were hard to find. Over the years we had semi annual inspections from the original company that installed the old system. Our experience was, we either had excellent technicians that knew what they were doing or the complete opposite. At one point one of the inexperienced technicians told us that our unit had completely failed and there was nothing he could do to save it. We immediately called the old Geo company back and ask for our regular technician. He came out, fixed it and it worked for a couple more years until we decided it was time. So obviously this put a bad taste in her mouth with field service company. So… We asked the old company to quote on a replacement plus two new geothermal companies. We were surprised at the wide range of pricing we received during this experience. These systems evidently can be done in two different versions. Either the lines that carry the ethylene glycol are drilled/bored horizontal if you have enough land or vertically if you don't. The vertical method is considerably more expensive than the horizontal or so we've been told. We also discovered that during the quoting process most of the equipment in this area carries similar specifications. We also found that most of the companies were using the same Geo thermal unit known as The Water Furnace. The backup heat source for the winter months can either be electric or gas. We chose propane gas as we already had the line to the basement where the old unit stood. The pricing from all three competitors were all over the board. Our house based on its size, design and age required somewhere between a 4 or 5 ton unit. There was a difference of opinion between competitors so we decided to go with the 5 ton unit since that is what was being taken away. The pricing for our system ranged from $18,000 to almost $35,000. We believe the only real difference was the fact that the more expensive Geo unit was going to be bored vertically instead of horizontal. We simply could not justify the added expense when we had plenty of land to deal with. Barga heating and air gave us the best value by far!!
