The end result is absolutely outstanding and we love it. Because our job was smaller than many of the jobs that Renaissance usually does we agreed to have our work fitted in around the schedule of larger jobs they were doing at the time. This worked well for us since they made sure that we had one completed shower before starting work on the second. Renaissance did a complete remodel on our kitchen about 5 years ago so we knew that their work is top of the line. Owner Todd Smith is easy to work with and responsive to our calls. Todd also directed us to great suppliers for the tile and marble that we needed to purchase for the project.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced second floor shower and removed master bath tub and shower and replaced it with a walk-in shower.

Renaissance remodeled our 1970's kitchen and it was a huge undertaking for us. Todd Smith, the project manager and owner made us feel very comfortable with the process. He provided a very detailed estimate which was important to use because of our budget. He showed us a 3-D layout and that really helped us decide to go with his company. It really helped us envision what we wanted, since he had to knock out a few walls to open up our existing, old, small, dysfunctional kitchen, which we really couldn't even put a table in.The new kitchen has changed our every day life. The energy in the house is so much better. My husband and I can sit in the kitchen now and enjoy dinner and drinks. Most important to us was being able to entertain and now there is so much more room. We can't wait till the holidays because our family will be coming to our house this year. I can't speak highly enough of Todd and Renaissance.

Todd worked with us on the designed of our small space and I am so pleased with how functional the kitchen turned out. He went with me to all the stores and offered his years of experience to help select cabinets, countertops and flooring. We had a tight deadline and he managed to come in under that, plus there was someone working on the project everyday. No downtime. I was also impressed with Mike and the contractors working for Todd. I recommend Todd all the time to neighbors and friends and would definitely use him again.
Description of Work: We contacted Todd Smith for our kitchen remodel after he was recommended by a friend and were not disappointed. Todd was prompt, responsive and fun to work with.

Todd Smith was a pleasure to work with. Not only was he very well-rated on Angie's List, but he was also recommended by a neighbor; and for the most part, my neighbors don't recommend their remodelers. We were happy with the whole experience. He was very responsive to all our requests. He was understanding when we held off a few months to save a bit more money before starting. His people were polite, timely and responsive. Their work has been excellent. His subcontractors were top notch too. The kitchen turned out better than I expected and I couldn't be happier with the whole experience.

All new cabinets/ new electrical/ toilet in old soffit moved/ all new appliances/ glass mosaic tile backsplash, hardwood floors refinished. New island was expertly modified with a bar area. Great! Todd Smith, the owner, and his carpenter, Mike, did a fantastic job! Todd came up with the design for the project which was not easy. There were definitely some mysteries regarding the loading bearing wall between the kitchen/dining room and the sunroom. There were also questions regarding a weird section of the kitchen that was added on, along with the sunroom, sometime in the 1960's. Todd spent hours going over every detail of the project before starting ( I think we met 6 -7 times) and we met numerous times during the construction which lasted about 3 1/2 months. We also discussed many details of the project over the phone. Todd went to various suppliers with me helping pick out materials, including the cabinets, granite, appliances, windows, doors and lighting. He always got back with me usually within minutes or that same day regarding my questions and concerns. He listened to me and respected my concerns. We discussed every detail of the project from the color of the electric switch plates to the type of kitchen cabinets. He also provided great ideas regarding design and choice of materials, such as sunroom floor tile, cabinet hardware and backsplash tile. He insisted on going to the lighting store with me to help pick out the pendant lights over the island. Todd is very knowledgeable about construction, design and products. He gave suggestions on where to shop for products and materials. His contacts for some of the materials were great to work with, including his cabinet supplier and the tile supplier. His subcontractors also did a great job. They all listened to me and went over every detail of the project, most notably his tile installer and his painters. This was a major job and this report does not completely describe very detail of the project and the fine work done by Todd and his workers. Todd has a great sense of humor which helped in the stressful months of construction. He never seemed to get fazed whenever a problem arose. His goal was to figure out how to fix the problem correctly and in the most economical way. His attention to detail and true care for the project was remarkable and I would most definitely hire him again.
Description of Work: Renaissance Inc did a total gut and remodel of my outdated kitchen, dining room and sunroom, as well as tearing down a small bump-out room and repairing the foundation and exterior wall. It included design and numerous consultations regarding choice of materials of the entire space. It also involved shoring up a load bearing wall with studs and a header and replacing rotted posts in the sunroom, all of which were structurally unsound. They removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room, tied in new hardwood flooring with the original hardwood floor, put in new cabinets, an island, granite counter tops, all appliances, recessed lighting, crown molding, french doors, a new window over the kitchen sink, and a pantry, They also updated the electric panel, buried the electric line from the post to the house, fixed and added the plumbing under the kitchen sink, and re-ran heating ducts and the kitchen vent exhaust. In addition to the kitchen, they completely remodeled my sunroom, replacing twelve windows and an exterior door, building a knee wall, installing siding, baseboard trim and crown molding, adding insulation in the attic and walls, putting in new floor tile, installing two remote heaters and a ceiling fan, new electric and recessed lighting in the ceiling. These rooms were also painted. Finally, I also had some work done in the adjacent living room, including refinishing the hardwood floors to match the kitchen, installing recessed lights in the ceiling and painting the walls and ceiling.

The work was done on budget and on-time. Todd managed the installers and let me know the progress. When their was a glitch with HH Greg appliance store at Easton in getting the right appliances, Todd and his wife stepped in and took care of the whole problem. Renaissance did a major addition and masterbath renovation in our house before, and I was very pleased and comfortable with the price and results this time too! We get a lot of nice compliments about our kitchen now. Todd is proud of his work and rare quality nowadays.
Description of Work: We had a very outdated kitchen. Renaissance came in and did a complete kitchen overhaul. We kept original cabinets, but installed new stove top, lighting, stainless appliances, granite countertop, and beautiful new tile backsplash.

Our remodel plan was to include new cabinets, vanity, shower, toilet, flooring, and fixtures; basically updating everything in a 25 year old master bathroom in order to bring it up to current standards for today's entry level home. Todd was on time to the appointment, spent time listening to our desires, made suggestions, and was friendly and personable. When Todd left the appointment, my husband and I felt good about the initial experience and were leaning towards hiring this company for our job. We were therefore surprised a week later to receive the following email: "Due to to our heavy schedule this time of year, we are passing on the opportunity to do your bid. We will not be able to give you good customer service, when we are so busy." While I understand small companies must prioritize, I could not help wondering why they would come out and give the customer an estimate in the first place? I was left with the impression that Renaissance was "fishing" for only the more expensive jobs, and when the numbers were "crunched"and our job was not expensive enough (more than 10K) it was, therefore, not worthy of their time. We were not in a hurry to have the job done. No mention was made from Renaissance about the possibility of doing the job at a later time in the year when they might be less busy. They were simply not interested which was misleading and in stark contrast to our initial impression after our first meeting. I felt I needed to submit this review due to the fact that another Angie's list subscriber had a similar experience with Renaissance within the last month. Needless to say, I was disappointed in this company's response and question its receiving of the Super Service Award from Angie's List on the basis of its initial professionalism.

We are sorry that the wrong impression was left with this member. We do strive to assist everyone that calls us, and would love to be able to do every project that we get inquires for, but that is not always possible. We regret that this potential client was so disappointed. We do value our excellent customer service record, and would have never done anything intentionally to cause this person distress, or feel like we were overlooking because of price.

This past summer we decided to remodel our master bath room. We interviewed 3 contractors in all. As soon as we met Todd, we knew he was our man. Todd could see my vision and also had suggestions and showed me other options that I loved (while staying in budget). We had them start in September and we were on our way. I absolutely enjoyed everyone that was on this job and trusted them to be in my home! No on cut corners, did everthing by the book and asked me at every turn what "I" wanted during the rebuild (tile position, shower head height, size of the bench for the shower, tub deck, etc... The whole project took longer than projected, but at the end of the day we would do it again and use the Renaissance Team!
Description of Work: They completely gutted our master bathroom. Removed walls, cabinets, mirrors, tub, toilet and rebuilt from a clean slate.

We set out to remodel our kitchen in the spring/summer of 2011. After interviewing several different contractors we found on Angie's List, Todd Smith was clearly the person for the job. His credentials, knowledge, and professionalism speak for themselves, plus, spend just ten minutes with him and you know he's the kind of guy you can trust ripping apart your house and putting it back together (in the way you want it, of course). He was able to look at our 1980s kitchen and see, from a contractor's eye, how to update it to make it functional and trendy again WHILE staying within our budget. In fact, more than once, I handed him an example of something that I wanted to have in the kitchen - all starry-eyed and completely oblivious to the cost - and he'd very gently but firmly remind me what my budget was. How nice! Todd's expertise was invaluable when it came time to "go shopping." I did not realize that a kitchen remodel was like a puzzle where I was responsible for creating the pieces, not just putting them together, and figuring out what I wanted at each supplier was overwhelming at first. Fortunately, Todd went with me to a few of the suppliers and helped me make the best decisions, and when he wasn't physically there, he was just a text away for advice. To put it simply, walking into these places was like stepping into a foreign country where I didn't know the language; when I had Todd with me, I had the best translator money could buy. We did have a few hiccups along the way, particularly with the granite countertop. But before I even picked up the phone to tell Todd I was upset, Todd called me and reassured me he was going to fix the problem right away. I was dumbfounded...I haven't decided yet if Todd has a crystal ball or if he's just really, really good at customer service (I'm guessing it's the latter!). Shannen, the carpenter at Renaissance Inc., does some pretty outstanding work. Our new cabinets and hardwood floor are gorgeous and very sturdy. We have had this kitchen for a full year and even after heavy use, it looks brand new. Since the remodel, I have had a lot of friends ask, "Isn't it weird having some complete stranger in your house all day?" And my answer is, it's dusty and noisy of course, but Shannen is a nice guy, very professional, and I never once felt creeped out. Plus, he gave good advice along the way as I was making decisions about hardware, lighting, etc. These guys know what they're talking about, and if I ever started down the wrong path with something, they were quick to steer me right. Overall, we are thrilled with our new kitchen and with the quality work provided. It truly feels like our kitchen now and I love working in it. It could not have happened without Renaissance Inc. We highly, highly recommend them.

In all, this big job got done pretty well and we are delighted with the results. Todd's people we respectful, easy to be around, and hard working. They seemed to be stretched a little thin, as there were many times when we expected something to get done on a particular day but they were reassigned to something else seemingly at the last minute. (To me this is a sign of weak project management, not bad intentions or outright mismanagement.) Todd was very easy to work with, took great interest in making sure we were happy, and even ate the cost of some doors that were ordered incorrectly. We had a couple of hiccups along the way that caused the project to come in a little later than we expected, but neither was a big problem and Todd worked hard to overcome the issues quickly to get back on track as best possible. Todd & his main guy Shannen had a positive attitude throughout the experience, and that easy-going manner helped us to feel assured that things were getting done well. Shannen especially was VERY responsive to our questions, concerns, etc. and as our go-to guy we felt we were in very good hands. One pet peeve was that our floors (hardwood & carpet) were not protected while the construction was underway, which meant we had a lot to clean up after they left. In particular some of the subs (especially the drywall tapers/mudders) were really messy and months later we are still finding residue. For this our A rating is still an A but with a little minus, too.

Todd was the quickest to respond to my call for an estimate. Of the 3 that I got, he was the most professional and most reasonably priced. He listened to what I wanted, and then offered suggestions to enhance my plan. He is a pleasure to work with. He is very communicative, letting me know how the work was planned to progress, personally introduced me to the different specialists coming into my home. His time estimates are accurate. He is always available by phone or texting while the job is in progress. A few complications and challenges came up during the remodel of my 85year old house, and he responded quickly and solved any problems immediately. I would certainly hire him again and recommend him to others.

I interviewed half a dozen companies and liked Todd the best during that process. He was not the least expensive, but seemed to be the most interested in the job, my satisfaction and doing quality work. He is extremely, extremely sincere and trustworthy. He offered great suggestions on design, cost savings and problem solving. Overall, we love our new bathroom. However... Todd is not the most organized contractor I've ever met. He repeatedly forgot decisions we had previously made, couldn't find emails containing product choices and just generally made me wonder if he was overextended on projects. Once reminded, he would recall that we had discussed/decided something, but by that time, a week or two or three had elapsed. He did not give design drawings to his tile guys, which almost caused a disaster in that department. The amount of tile ordered was underestimated, which caused a delay. The guy who did the tile, I will say, was EXCELLENT. Probably the most frustrating part of the whole experience was the mess factor. The guys did not drape the work area or our electronics/furniture and we had tons and tons of dust/drywall residue/tile chalk all over our lower level. They guys left garbage on our carpeting over weekends and left drywall/a sink and other large debris on our patio for over a week. The crew helped themselves to our step stool, buckets, other stuff without asking and did not clean them up or return them to the original location when done. We even had issues with the lockbox and security system, despite clearly identifying when the crew would access the property and when they would not. The final straw - we had a significant amount of left over tile (read: that we paid for and that had supposedly stalled the project earlier) after the job was completed. Todd did offer to come back and pick it up, but we were so anxious to return our space to normal, we returned it to the Tile Shop ourselves. Imagine our surprise when the Tile Shop employee told us, "We didn't sell Todd this tile for your project. In fact, we didn't even sell it to Todd, this is not our product." Wow - some other client paid for that tile and it got delivered to our house, and sat there for a month. Todd, and a few of his guys, are fantastic people. A few of the guys were sloppy and not considerate of our belongings. Overall, they do very good work. If you don't mind micromanaging the project, you will enjoy the results. If you are the kind of client that doesn't want to have to chase down every last detail, and do it multiple times, or worry about your house being left in messy conditions, you need to consider another contractor.

We love the new kitchen! The flooring looks amazing and the backsplash is beautiful with the new granite. The owner, Todd, was very quick to respond to my phone calls. If I wanted something to be modified, he quickly provided me with a change order and the cost of making that change. He made an appearance a few times per week to make sure everything was going well and on schedule. The guys who were on site every day were really great. They were friendly, knowledgeable and very good at what they do. I'd use Renaissance again in a heart beat.

It went very well. I think one big positive about working with Renaissance is that Todd, the owner, was terrific about communication all the way through.
Description of Work: I had my master bathroom completely remodeled by Todd's company Renaissance. It had not been touched since the house was built in 1974. I am thrilled with the results. You wouldn't recognize it as the same space (thank heavens). All the way through Todd's crew left the space immaculate every night. Major masterbath upgrade, new mother-in-law suite and bath, and mud-room. Project was extensive from planning, selection of materials, and construction and framing and detail work took about 2-3 months. Highly recommend Todd and his staff. My masterbath was fashioned after the bathrooms at the suites of the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. Every morning I feel like I'm on vacation in the masterbath. Truly tremendous job. Kathy and the tile installer guy are artists.
Description of Work: I found this company to be outstanding. They renovated two bathrooms, including a huge upgrade on our masterbath and added an extra bedroom from garage space and they stayed in budget, and kept me apprised of the status all the time. Todd did the original estimates, suggested cost saving techniques or alternatives which probably trimmed $10,000 or more off the total bill. Todd was the focal point if I had questions and he didn't pawn it off. I appreciated that. The dust and dumpster mess was cleaned up every day and, although a bit of a pain, the company cleaned up after every day and with so much work it was just part of the job. They put plastic down on my carpet to prevent messes. Thought this was nice. When the City inspected and added a new requirement after the initial inspection on one area (different inspector!), Renaissance didn't bill me for the change and added item for a vent. The tile work is fabulous in both baths and its like being in a new house. Kathy was great to work with on tile and accommodated my schedule on a Saturday to help me make selections. You don't find this work ethic much any more.

It was an overall great experience, we were nervous since it was our first home. But Todd and his team were very professional & made us feel very confident with our choices. When Todd came out he really explained everything in detail and how every step would work. We had to pick out our granite & go look at different suppliers for all of our materials and he was always just a phone call away. My husband and I were on a budget with this project, and they were very helpful with giving a payment schedule. The bathrooms are beautiful, and the kitchen is great! We will definitely be using this company for future projects. Everyone was a pleasure to work with. We will tell all of our friends!!!!!
Description of Work: They performed our home inspection. They also updated both our bathrooms by installing new counter tops, tile floors, sinks, surround. Renaissance also remodeled our kitchen with new counter tops, back splash, flooring.

I would rate Renaissance quite poorly based upon my overall experience. There is absolutely no way I would recommend Renaissance for any type of home remodeling. The experience should have been rather enjoyable, but due to the nature of both the Superintendent and his wife this was not a possibility. Todd Smith, the superintendent of Renaissance, and his wife, Becky, are two of the most unprofessional people I have ever dealt with and having worked in a professional environment on a daily basis for over 25 years I feel confident making this statement. Believe Todd Smith when he states "That ain't gonna be cheap" because we were given that as his standard answer on most everything discussed and he was right, nothing was cheap AND everything involved an argument. Remodeling an older house should have been an exciting and fun experience but Renaissance turned it into and administrative nightmare that nobody should have had to go through. Below is a small list of issues, not all inclusive by any means that shows the kind of overpriced under-delivered experience we had with Renaissance. Renaissance is ran by Todd Smith, the superintendent, and his wife Becky who takes care of the financials. Upon meeting with Todd in the beginning of our experience he had promised that he would be doing the majority of the work and would pay close attention to the areas of our project in which other sub-contractors would be participating. This was not the case. Todd's appearances were minimal at best in terms of overseeing our project as was evident when Todd requested final payment with over 32 items to be completed on our "punch list". If he had managed the project appropriately, he would have known that the project was not complete and regardless of the scheduled final payment due date, payment would not be received by him unless the project was finalized. Instead, Todd claimed that we were withholding payment for unnecessary reasons and that he would get his attorney's involved. He also stated that in all of his years of being a contractor he had never had such a difficult time being paid by any of his clients. Paying a contractor prior to services being rendered would have resulted in a personal nightmare (paying for services that would possibly never be rendered) that I did not care to endure. So, we stood our ground and did not pay until the job was finalized. In addition to Todd and his wife, the company also has one hired employee who is a general contractor and does the majority of their work. All other specialty work is sub-contracted out such as: tiling, drywall, plumbing, electrical, and so on. Todd does not do any of the day-to-day work. He did minimal framing for the entire project and hung a light fixture which he had to come back and fix as it was a safety hazard. Todd relies on his lone employee to do work his subcontractors cannot. Todd pays this employee 35% of Renaissance hourly rate while he is nowhere to be found. We initially agreed to $22k of remodeling knowing that we would do more as all remodeling was not included on the original contract. We agreed to do additional items later, but Todd insisted and pushed us to sign contracts on items that we were not ready or comfortable in completing at the time. Saying that certain items need be completed in a particular order, thus boosting his sales. Many items completed by Renaissance we did not agree upon and were cornered into (i.e...plumbing and wiring were completed prior to Todd discussing with us what needed to be done and giving us a quoted price. We were only told that particular items were necessary and so, these items were completed, without our knowledge leaving us standing with the bill. There were over $8,000 of new items that were not discussed before we knew of them and in turn were expected to pay. One of the "high dollar" items involved electrical re-wiring. Todd stated that the wiring in our house was a nightmare and that most if not all wiring would need to be re-worked. Several outlets in the areas remodeled by Renaissance remain non-working and one outlet in particular was replaced with a blank resulting in one less outlet in our home that has very few outlets as is. Todd complained to us about the high rate needed to pay the sub-contractors in order to make us feel sorry for him and to justify his overpriced services. BUT, he didn't follow the normal approval process in order that expectations were understood by us in terms of what was being done in terms of services and required payment. The superintendent lacked severely in professionalism in terms of contracts and payment. A formal contract was not created until projects were already underway. The contract was created haphazardly and payment was expected almost immediately. In essence, Todd took his time with everything (Example: creating of the contract and the project in general) and did things at his leisure BUT, when he wanted payment, he wanted it NOW. Payment options were discussed at minimum. A question was asked regarding a payment option and Todd stated that he would check with his wife regarding that option. The question was simply, Do you take a particular credit card? Todd lied and stated that he did indeed check with his wife and that Renaissance did not take the particular payment method. This resulted in our need to do some balance transfers in order to get appropriate APR rates which takes 7 days to complete. Todd threatened us with his attorney yet again when the problem was completely avoidable. We found out at a later date that Renaissance does INDEED take Discover Card and that Todd was just too lazy to ask his wife AND he had lied to us about doing so creating unnecessary stress and tension between contractor and home buyer. Additionally, it is important to note that the contract was created and discussed on a Friday with the Superintendent and one home buyer, the other home buyer having had a life threatening family emergency. Todd began threatening us with his attorney either the following Tuesday or Wednesday, having almost lost a parent, this was a bit over-the-top, unprofessional and lacking in compassion. Again, all stress could have been avoidable had he asked one question to the person controlling financials in his office. Todd himself started the animosity early and often between the homeowners and Renaissance which made this a very bad experience. Short list of issues encountered: - Poor management of contractors in terms of their time table such as what items need be completed and when and in what timeframe should said items be completed, - Poor management of employee punctuality and work ethic, example: employee arrives at project around 10am and leaves at 4pm not allowing a large amount of time to complete project tasks in a timely manner. Again, added unnecessary stress! - Superintendent wanted the remainder of the 25% of total payment when over 33 items on the ?punch out? list to-be-completed. When payment was denied buy the home buyer as the project was not complete. The Superintendent, Todd Smith follows up by screaming threats via voicemail stating that he will yet again be getting his attorney involved. Because Todd wanted payment prior to his services being rendered, stating that he needed to pay the cabinet company for our cabinets. #1 complete your work and you will receive payment, - The superintendent complained numerous times while yelling at us that we were the most difficult clients he had ever had in terms of receiving payment. Who pays their contractor prior to services being completed? - Superintendent blames homeowner for items that were damaged during construction, - Argument about light fixtures not hung properly/light fixture attached improperly resulting in a safety hazard, - Argument about electrical holes not being patched after electrical work was completed, - completes work without informing homeowner of the cost and assumes he will be paid for it at "it aint gonna be cheap" price, - as requested by homeowner, removed the cost of shelving to be completed in a closet by $20 but charged $60 to put in a baseboard in one of the bathrooms that cost over $8,000 to complete, one would think a baseboard would be included in $8,000 to finish a bathroom, - Yells and hangs up on homeowner numerous times, then calls and apologizes so that homeowner does not complain, - Has wife play the "ask Mom, ask Dad" method of getting homeowner to see if she can get a different answer on payment methods (example: Becky called one homeowner and asked for payment and when that homeowner said no, as the contract was not complete, she then called the other homeowner to ask for payment via voicemail. When neither homeowner answered, Todd called and left a nasty voicemail.) - A bathroom vanity was purchased and to be installed by Renaissance. The vanity was installed. Once installation was completed the homebuyer was called and told that the vanity had an imperfection/scratch. We were then asked what we wanted to do. Vanities cannot be returned once installed and Renaissance of course did not take responsibility for causing the scratch thus, we were left with a quartz vanity top with a rather deep 1.5 inch scratch in a bathroom that cost $8000 to renovate. This is a short list of issues with many more that could be listed. Renaissance is a company that you should not be sending your business. Even if half of this short list of items were debatable or mischaracterized in any way please do not put yourself through the stress of dealing with their lack of professionalism and poor business management. Todd Smith is simply unprofessional, shady, arrogant and we strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Their motto should be "that ain't gonna be cheap" and we will do an average job...at best!

Response from Renaissance Inc - The House Whisperer
Member, I am sincerely sorry that you feel as if your remodeling project did not meet your expectations. My company and I worked above and beyond the parameters of the information and budget you provided in order to remodel your vacant farmhouse. As you recall, the entire project was monitored and approved by the bank loan officers. All inspections and time requirements passed muster with the City of New Albany and FHA. That would never have happened if the work or timing of the project had been substandard as you have asserted. We worked as best we could with the project changes you made despite my company having to carry the cost of materials and inspections when payments were seriously delinquent. (This is a matter we have held in close confidence and that would never have been disclosed to the general public had it not been for your slanderous remarks that required an explanation to our loyal, timely paying customers). I am unaware of any damage to any of your installed materials. I am aware that the bathroom vanity you purchased from a discounter was defective (having a scratch on the counter top). If you recall, I brought that to your attention upon installation. It would have been impossible for anyone other than the manufacturer to have scratched that surface. (which is probably why it was considered defective and sold through a discount outlet as such). Our track record speaks for itself, maintaining an A+ rating with the BBB, and Angie’s List, also receiving over 8 Super Service Awards 4 years in a row. Nearly all of our clients have nominated us for Page of Happiness because they are so thrilled with the results & experience. I am saddened by your negative comments when we worked so hard with you to finance and meet your expectations. I am happy to say that in the 11 years I have been in business, you are the first and only customer to feel as if they had a negative experience with myself or my company. I sincerely intend to continue making my customers as happy as possible.

I will preface this by saying that we had a horrible kitchen: it was not only small, but also had a strange configuration that allowed for no easy cabinet placement. It had neither countertops, nor clear spaces on which to position countertops; and the appliances were so jammed together that it was impossible simultaneously to open the refrigerator and stand (let alone open) the oven. We had wanted to change it for years, but every time we?d have a contractor take a look, they would wince and either decline the job or tell us it couldn't?t be done for less than 50% of the price of the house. And then we met Todd Smith of Renaissance. Instead of grimacing, he proposed a kitchen plan that we could afford. Instead of raising our blood pressures by enumerating all the possible disaster scenarios and looking panicked by Clintonville quirks, he calmly explained how he would work around them. All the subcontractors (electricity, plumbing, drywall) were great -- highly competent, professional, punctual. And Shannen, who was largely responsible for the project and installed the floor and cabinets, made two cabinets with old materials from a built-in, and constructed the most beautiful door door and window frames I have ever seen was amazing. He was a master at moldings and cabinets. I would come home from work and just marvel at what he had done in a day. All their work was impeccable; and even when problems emerged (a cabinet was too big for the space, a ceiling light had been misplaced), they were corrected immediately. Todd was always quick to write back and kept us updated throughout the project. We also really liked the fact that Todd listened to our concerns and plans: we wanted a peninsula and he made it happen. We wanted floor to ceiling pantries, and he built them into the plan. We now have a gorgeous kitchen and entryway that blends beautifully into our 1920s house. And amazingly we came in within a few hundred dollars of our original budget. In short, we could not have been more delighted with our experience with Renaissance and recommend them with the highest possible praise. Our home is so beautiful thanks to them.
Description of Work: They completed gutted our kitchen (taking down ceiling and floors); upgraded electricity; took out wall between kitchen and dining room; closed up entrance from kitchen to family room and opened a new doorway (through old exterior brick); redid floors with oak; installed new cabinets, sink, and appliances; added granite counters and installed glass backsplash tile. They also redid our side entrance into the house (and kitchen); added doors to the basement; and built a bench and cabinets in the vestibule.

Todd came out and listened to what we wanted to do and promptly followed up with a quote. During the process there were very few deviations from the quote, and we came in very close to our budget. Todd started by getting a building permit, other contractors we interviewed were not going to do that. If you are planning on selling your home in the future, the inspections really add some credibility to the contractor and work, in our opinion. Todd had great ideas for the project, after listening to our needs and wants. All of the sub-contractors were professional and did excellent work. Todd managed the entire project so we didn't need to do anything except pick out finishes. Todd has been in the business a long time and gave us advice on where to find the best deals on appliances, hardware, etc. They actually built a bar from scratch and it looks awesome! Todd was very communicative on the progress of the project. We can't say enough nice things about Todd, Becky, and their subcontractors. The project turned out beautifully; our friends have commented that our home looks like something out of a magazine. We highly recommend Renaissance Inc for your remodelling project. They are the best.
Description of Work: We hired Renaissance Inc to update our kitchen with granite, replace the faucets in the kitchen and bath, switch out brass hardware for bronze, and a major remodel in our basement. They demolished the existing rooms, and totally rebuilt, adding a kitchen, and bar, and updating the downstairs bathroom, new carpet, drywall, paint, and glass block windows. Basically, everything you'd want in a major remodelling project. We're late in getting our report out because we just joined Angie's List, primarily because of the positive experience we had with Todd and his crew.

The project went pretty well overall. First off I cannot say strongly enough that the quality of the work that Todd Smith and his crew does is excellent, especially given that they are also good as far as costs are concerned. I will also say that Todd's crew as well as the contractors he hired were the most polite and professional people (even the neighbors remarked on this point). They were very careful to cleanup after themselves at the end of each day and minimized the impact on our home life when work was going on. The only issue that I experienced during the process was with finishing in a timely fashion and communication. I had an unusually tight timeline when I planned the project and Todd was confident they could finish ahead of schedule (quoted as taking two weeks to do the job). Initially work proceeded quickly. We hit a snag when the tiles I had ordered (marked in stock when purchased) turned out to be on backorder. This fact was in no way Renaissance's fault, strictly the supplier's error. However the gas seemed to let up when the job could not be finished right away, felt like I had to do a bit of hounding to keep the work going on other aspects of the job not involving the tile. The work had slowed to the point when the tile installer was ready to do the tiling, the backordered supplies were already in the house for a full day. All in all the project finished in just about a month, twice as long as initially estimated. They did however get finished before my deadline by really pushing hard at the end, it all worked out but added a lot of stress to the process. Additionally Todd became tougher to get ahold of when things were not going as smoothly. There were a couple of mishaps during the work as well, but inside the bounds of normal surprises when doing this kind of project. I should note that truly it was my time deadline that really added the stress to this project, if the timeframe were more open ended I'm sure I would feel that the project went perfectly smoothly. All in all Todd and his crew did a great job. The quality is excellent and I am very satisfied with the end product. The process just turned out to be a bit stressful, which under normal time constraints would probably have been fine.
Description of Work: Hired Renaissance to remodel the master bathroom and to add closet space in one of the bedrooms. Bathroom included removing the old tub and cabinet, installing new tub and cabinet and creating a new tile shower surround and ceramic tile floor. Also included in the bathroom work was replacing existing window with block glass in the shower as well as running new plumbing for showerhead and controls. Bedroom closet included framing, installing trim to match style of house, installing french doors, installing ceiling lighting inside closet. Renaissance was responsible for all waste removal.

Absolutely outstanding! Todd Smith has my highest recommendation. I'm a fairly experienced do-it-yourselfer and am usually disappointed with the quality of workmanship of most contractors. I typically end up redoing or undoing some of their work--not this time. This job was done on my son's home. We met with 9 contractors (7 from Angie's list) and obtained 5 estimates. A few of the contractors I dismissed immediately as unprofessional. Of the estimates I received, 4 were between $13,500 and $17,000. There was one estimate for over $30,000 which I did not seriously consider. I did not select the lowest bid, I chose Renaissance because I believed Todd Smith to be the most competent and trustworthy of the four. I was spot on. Todd began the process by listening carefully to what we were proposing to do and then made several recommendations to reduce cost and/or improve the final design. He cautioned me that since the house was over 100 years old, we could encounter some significant challenges. Todd and crew began work on time and pretty much stuck to schedule. Along the way, some of those challenges did arise and he would carefully explain the options. He always came up with a creative solution that avoided cost creep. Several times he called me to tell me that some aspect of the job was easier than he had planned and the cost savings from not having to do that work would offset other unforeseen costs. The net result, he completed the job on time, on cost. Todd installed all new plumbing fixtures, new double vanity, new ceiling, three new walls, a pocket door to the lavatory, new flooring, porcelain tile around the tub/shower, exhaust fan, and new electric outlets. Everything looks great! All the trim work, door casings, and baseboards are meticulously detailed. His plumber replaced all the copper pipe (heavily corroded and leaking) in the house with PEX, to include installing a new main shut off. Over the course of the job, his plumber discovered the washing machining drain in the basement wasn't up to code and they fixed that as well. Everything was done in an exceptionally workmanlike manner and I have the highest confidence in everything he and his crew accomplished. i made the right choice hiring Todd Smith and would do so again without hesitation.
Description of Work: Complete Bathroom renovation. Tore out existing walls, floor, fixtures, plumbing and wiring; to include relocating the wall of an adjacent bedroom to expand the bath area. Job included completely replacing all plumbing into the house and installing hard-wired smoke/fire detectors required under city code.
